Michaël Bihain

mb-thumb.jpgIn the world of Michaël Bihain, you may see dancing shelves (Let's Dance), fruit becoming a part of our walls (Oyon) or a chair that you would never sit on (Paradise Chair).
Michael's unique and daring designs represent the vanishing point where news, lifestyle and conventional memory converge and overlap. They are his desire to design responsible furniture for free people.

Michaël studied interior design at the Institute Saint-Luc in Liege and at Hull University in England, having previously trained as a butcher and as a carpenter. He has been awarded the ‘ Aide à la création et innovation' prize, conceived the furniture for the British Council in Paris, the interior of the family museum of the English sculptor Henry Moore, develops furniture for the data-processing field for the manufacturer Chizat, design with the cigarette brand Benson cigarette & Edges private interiors in London, design jewellery for True Love, develops products with OBOEconcept and currently teaches furniture at Saint-Luc.
Some of his works are a part of the permanent collection of the design Museum of Seoul, and are regularly displayed at exhibitions in London, Paris, and Milan.

Luna

Luna-hand-small-w250-h350-2.jpgThe beautifully designed series of Futiro makes you long for a skype phone even when you would not really need one...

Their words:We chose a team of world-class designers because we wanted to develop products which would lift the bar in VoIP phone design. It was and continues to be our belief, that quality design in USB phones has been largely neglected in the rush towards capturing market share.
We set out to address that deficiency. Our goal was to produce a range of VoIP phones which are functional in purpose, high quality design and not currently available anywhere else.

En plus, the Futiro series is now Mac enabled.
*Running to the on-line shop now*

Calendar

dan_formosa_redalu_01_400.jpgI noticed this calendar while surfing for some design stuff. I like it. Easy, plain simple and timeless. Apparently it was design in the sixties. How comes so many nice stuff is dating from that period (or is it just me liking those times?)

The calendar can be bought on AmbienteDirect. (I bought a lamp and storage recently, and instead of the promised 3 days it lasted around 3 weeks, but it arrived, in good shape, and certainly cheaper than in the local design shop...)

Last Fm

red_logo.jpgWhen I started with Last FM back in 2004 on John's advise, I liked the idea because I didn't have to do anything. The audioscrobbler just scrobbles. And indexes your music.
In the beginning, 'my recommended radio' wasn't good. But now after 22000 songs and probably also after the system got more input, I really like it...
It's radio but without the annoying sound of voices, or stupid contests (where women eat toe nails to win a festival ticket.???)
Last Fm rocks.

Want to listen to my music?
Just hit the little icon under 'lounge' in the left sidebar and you'll get a pop up playing music. Enjoy.

Bruno got 44

66473445407abcacf29.jpgThis blog is about a project, a present 2 friends of mine arranged for my 44th birthday. I didn't only become 44, I also got 44 dates with 44 unknown women, one for each week.

Each week, a date, a place, and a handful of instructions.
That's it.

Ready for adventure...

Stripped down

Becoming 30 feels like a bless.
Unlike my mom back then, I haven't 2 children nagging around, and I actually have a nice job, providing me with money I can spend on whatever I feel like.
So, unlike people who freak out at thinking three zero, I feel quite happy.
I am finally losing some of my nervousity, and am (finally?) calming down.

Yet, I do feel it is the perfect moment to check some stuff.
Re-think the road I have been taking and if it was the way I intended it. If not, if it was good or bad to switch paths.

Back to basics too.
I like back to basics. To simple lines. And details.

I started out with this site. A re-design.
Putting the dead-line today was surely the intention.
Stripping off the extra's too.

After several years of blogging, and adding too many extra's, I stripped them.
Yet, trying to implement/leave the stuff I think worthwhile.
Verify the subjects I have been pondering about. Skipping those that bored me after all.
More focus on the stuff that is important.
Maybe even aim at more content again (like in the early days)

Stripping down a lot of other stuff too.
While the last few years have been totally focussed on internet and new media, I love the idea that lately I re-found fun in photography.
And I am actually enjoying being out side picturing real life, instead of observing this other space amalgam( ;) )

I don't know what the future will bring.
And actually, that's why I like it :)

Btw: no need to change your feed: indeed thanks to Feedburner it stays the same.
People who formerly surfed to Typepad instead of Monuments.nu need to change directions.
And please, for linklove, refer to monuments.nu instead of other stuff. Much appreciated!

The Dutch section also relocated. Tout nu is the new destination :)

Droog's Starters Box

5-23-Droogkit2-1Design 101. Similar to IKEA's popular StartBox for kitchens, Droog's Starters Box aims to supply you with the basics. In this case, the basics is a sampling of the Dutch design collective's smaller scale but iconic works...

Aargh, pretty nice present to receive.
I am pretty sure I would find it darn hard to give away that present, when buying it for someone else.

Available for purchase from DroogShop for €99.

Behive.be is born

Behive2

When re-thinking my interests, I figured out that one of the main things I always have been busy with is promoting Belgian stuff.

I once was responsible for the photo exhibits at Minard (at times of Photoblog), and in a coop with a Flemish photomagazine, the main purpose was to launch Belgian photographers.
On this blog, I focus on design, and admitted, I am pretty curious to see what we do over here.
I work at an art school, and it is fun to see the stuff that gets born there.
And while showing Belgium to my foreign friends, I discovered it's natural beauty.

When abroad, I noticed how we Belgians are too damn shy to promote ourselves. Heck, when you dare to say over here you're good at something, people look at you as if you did something not done. As a Belgian, it seems a rule to rate yourself down.
Since I don't agree on that, and since, when having been abroad for such a long time, I noticed the good stuff about 'home' I decided to launch a site that gathers these good things.

So Behive.be was born.
It covers design (since well that's my 'dada' and I really like the idea of learning more about our talented designers), art (how we have amazing artists.), food (ehrm I think you all agree our food can certainly be compared to our neigbouring countries..), travel, leisure and lifestyle.
Leisure is in native language due to the subjects, the rest in English, since well, it IS aimed at promoting ourselves.

I am still looking for writers. Not real dedicated writers. I don't believe in exclusivity (in certain parts of life that is ;) ) Though I don't mind if you like the subject so much you rather dedicate yourself to it :).

I am looking for bloggers who have existing posts on Belgium that might fit the subject. Posts that fit into Behive and can be cross posted.
Posts that allow you to cross-link to your own site and get it known a bit.

Behive wants to be a hub. Gathering info and stuff. (It could have been a wiki, but I don't like the way you have to search it, it could have been a technoratisearch, but I don't believe in that either.)

If you like the idea, don't hesitate to mail me.

Stuck in mail

Our postal offices are on strike since... Hell, dunno, seems for a long time.

What I didn't receive yet:
-mobile bills
-paper to vote
-paper to pay the annual taxes
-rabobank subscripton (hey they pay 3.4 % compared to 1.5 of Fortisbank)
-probably a lot of other bills since the rest mostly arrives by email.

I am already foreseeing some money aside, or there might be a surprise suddenly..

Real people choose real design

24Icff.1261The New York Times Home & Garden staff compiled a group of four very different people to give feedback on ICFF. While this story attempts to bridge the gap between "design" and the masses, it might do more to alienate them by focusing on the extremes of the show

And what is their choice:

Their unanimous favorite was the foam chair from Sixinch. Ms. Hayward liked that she could picture it in a traditional setting; everyone responded to how it felt, which was soft and bouncy. As for what they could imagine taking home, Ms. Hayward chose the foam chairs for her New York dining room, as did Mr. Shellman, but only in white, he said. He preferred the plain bamboo sideboard from Iannone. So did Mr. Miller, but only when pressed. “None of this is really my style,” he said.

Miss Lewy picked the green foam lounge chair, with a caveat.

“It’s for my dorm room, or my just-out-of-college room, which would feel like a house but not like a real home,” she said. “When I grow up and have a family, I don’t want my house to look like a lounge.”

A Belgian company. Ha!

Fonero.be: my 2cents

Logo Fonero got launched in Belgium.
(I am a Fonero* myself since launch. I have to admit, the Fon is not running now, since it has a conflict with Mac. Have to fix it soon.)

Some 2cents to the Fonero.be proposal.
I think the advertisement is a bit misleading...
Ok, you get a free wifi modem, but you'll need to buy the adsl modem anyway. On top of that, since you need to connect to the phone, you still need a landline.
The proposed offer of adsl for 30 29,95 euro/month results in: 29.95 euro/month + 6,85 euro/month + one time installation of the landline (which is now for free.) + adsl modem (approx 60 euro) + 25 euro activation for FON

Yet, the return is still nice compared to other services:
30 GB per month, nice for active bandwidth users (you won't get it elsewhere cheaper...)
6mbs speed is nice (if and only if that's true... I still have to actually see Telenet or Belgacom giving us real speed)

But the nicest part of the offer: free wifi access all over as a Fonero.

A nice side add-on is the POI map: a downloadable map for Fon accesspoints, allowing find Fon points by using your GPS.
Another nice extra is Fon for Symbian, allowing you to use the free hotspots for your mobile as well.

Why is Fonero.be really misleading in my eyes: because you don't need rent that ADSL line to be a fonero.
Surf to Fon.com, buy yourself the 40 euro Fon modem, and get free access to the same hotspots all over.
Or better, do the Fonero gets Fonero thing: invite a friend to get a Fon at 20 euro instead of 40.

Guess what: I still have 3 invitations left.
You want a wireless Fon router for a mere 20 euro? You better ask it sweet.
And tell me why I should prefer you above another... (And don't think I'll buy a 2 sentences motivation)

*Check the main idea of Fon: you give free wifi access to others to get free access from others.)

Thin thinner ...

Intel-Metro-DesignWatch out Sony, it looks like your Vaio X505's title for thinnest / lightest laptop ever is about to be challenged by some new Intel-sponsored Zima designs intended to push the envelope of portability.

I don't think this Intel Zima is a challenge for the Vaio, as the Vaio sucks (anyone will tell ya). It is a competition to an Apple Macbook.
And that is a compliment indeed.

Insurances

I visited my insurance guy today.
Some weeks ago I called him for a professional insurance: as an independent you better have some insurances in case something happens (like breaking a Chinese vase at your client or so :) )

Few years ago, I already checked a lot on insurances, travel insurances that is...
The conclusion was rather simple: double check, since any way or another you'll be paying several stuff double.
Hat tips on the matter:
-If you travel for not longer than 3 months, your social insurance is covering most of the necessities, except for when you go to countries in war. So no need for that extra travel insurance.
-If you go longer, or to a country in war, opt for a Europe Assistance.
-Travel and cancallation insurance for each trip: a waste of money, ask your bank for a MasterCard Gold, pay 30 euro a year, and you get a lot of extra stuff, cancel insurance, anti-loss and anti-theft included as well.
-For a good camera and or portable check Dexia or KBC for a decent theft insurance, but be aware it won't come cheap.
I discovered I was paying several stuff twice, and I can tell you, it wasn't because I am stupid ;)

But back to the 'normal' insurances: the motorcycle, the fire insurance, the BA and whatever.
After some calculations of my great insurance guy, it turned out I get the whole package (fire, property, theft, family insurance, professional insurance, and the motorcycle) for the same price I was paying the motorcycle insurance.
I can tell you I didn't hurt to sign those new contracts.
The best thing: he proposed to check this stuff before I mentioned it.

My advise: find yourself a good insurance guy, and have your insurances checked.

Try to locate them on one spot as you'll get good package deals. (I mean really good package deals.)

Frankly speaking, I really decided not to give it to my bank directly (though my insurances are actually with the same bank now, through the agent.)
The service of a good agent is really worth the extra pennies when you'll be in trouble (I can assure you it is really nice to call someone who runs for you.)

Calling your agent is one phone call, and you'll might be surprised about the money it saves you.
I'll be spending the 300 euro elsewhere ;)

Which camera?

L 00015074The reason why I stumbled upon the Canon site has to do with the fact I was thinking of buying a second camera.

Don't get me wrong, I love my D20. And although I would love to have a D5 for professional reasons, my D20 is enough for the moment.
But my little Digital Elph got lost, and I wanted to check on buying one to take on holidays. (Dragging around a D20 is a hassle...)
I decided not to buy the SD 70, since I bought a cute SD 60 for C. (One I can use once in while I hope.)
But I admit, I was tempted today. I do miss the convenience of a small camera, and we all know, the phone cam isn't a competitor to a digital pocket camera at all.
So I went to the shop to day to check things out.

In the shop I noticed the Canon G7. And man, it looks good.
Of course it doesn't fit your pocket like the little Elph, but this camera seems to have the convenience to have fast access to manual settings, and other iso. And it fits well in a small side bag. I can use my flash on it, which is a nice feature.
At 10Mp, i seemed like a convenient camera I could use for professional reasons.
I checked the cam on Dpreview and notice a lot of cons but also a lot of pro's.
The main complaints is the ISO which wouldn't be that good.

Anyone has experience with the camera?
Anyone can tell me something about it? Or advice me a similar cam?
(Don't mind about some extra pennies, as the state is taking them anyway otherwise...)

Maze by Arne Quinze

q2.jpgBeautiful doesn't necessary imply big. Allthough small in size, the MAZE table enchants everyone with it's suggestion of transparence. Viewed from above, it's almost as if you are looking trough the mesh of a net.

MAZE was born in the studio's of Arne Quinze, but its genes are of the East-MAZE means table in Hindi. There is something mysterious about it; it looks different depending on the angle you view it from. Its common sense lies in its flexibility: place it inside, in the living room or i n the bathroom, or outside, in the garden-with its plastic body.

MAZE fits in anywhere. MAZE: light, adaptive, available in white, green or black, and low maintenace.
The ideal woman actually.

Chocolate Mousse

chocolate-mousse.main.jpgHaving a BBQ today, and decided to go for this little thing. Can't get enough of chocoloate...

Ingredients

* 5 eggs
* 140g of dark chocolate
* 1 teaspoon of instant coffee
* 1 table spoon of rhum, Grand Marnier, or Amaretto (only if you want to)
* 3 table spoons of sugar

Preparation

* Very slowly melt the chocolate with the instant coffee. Be careful not to burn it.
* Separate the eggs into egg white and egg yolk. Make sure to keep the egg whites free of yolk, in a clean bowl.
* Beat the egg white, with one table spoon of sugar.
* Mix the egg yolk with two table spoons of sugar and one table spoon of rhum.
* Mix the egg yolk into the molten chocolate.
* Very carefully mix the beaten egg white and the chocolate.
* Pour into small bowls or glasses and store in a cool place.

The chocolate mousse is at its best after one or two days.

Blog ethics

More and more people get aware of the power of blogging. Especially the bloggers them selves.
Google bombs are pretty often started by bloggers. An easy call, as their readers, very often other bloggers, can easily reproduce the call on their blog.
A well known google bombs by Belgian blogger Maarten Schenk: Dell Hell, resulted in what it intended: get on the first place in google.
But how harmful is this to a company and how little has to be done to get this result?
Some days ago n00.be wrote down a complaint on Konijnenberg. (No google bomb, be aware), John wrote on Metatale and some other bloggers, I wrote a post on Microsoft, ...
What do you think about it?

Is one opinion that gets blown up representative for everything this company does?
Do you base your opinion on what another blogger writes?

Does a blogger need ethics?
Or is all this 'influential' stuff pretty relative, and doesn't it matter anyway as 'bloggers only reach bloggers'?

I really think about it when posting something on 'things I don't like'

A rather long time ago Pietel launched a complaint on another photo service around, and in this example he also didn't link straight away to the service. I pretty often don't either. And I do care not to write a black and white perspective. I always have been allergic to it. (Except for my El Al story :) )

I don't have the answers. But I do think it is something we [bloggers] have to be aware of and care about.
And I guess it is one of the main difference between bloggers and journalists: writing a short post on something you dislike, or making that a researched item is a total different case.

Do online critics matter?

Corneel wrote about it, and I was at the same debate.
I have been at several debates, and sorry, to say, often been disappointed in the debate itself as it doesn't seem like what I understand under 'debate'
C. rightfully mentioned that probably I go to debates with subjects I know too much about, and the rest of the audience is probably seeing things differently as they know less about the matter. (But C., last time we went, we both went outside because of 'bored'ness ..)
The debate at Vooruit was kind of missing the point somewhat I believe.

While the video interviews kind of meant to trigger the speakers, it clearly in several ways was not perceived in that way.
Stefan Kolgen presented their online theater project, and the speakers doubted the project in several senses.
I do too. But I think you have to think beyond and have a discussion about what is possible. Talk about if this is still theater and not, philosophize about it.
Similar story about influential, new media vs old media, of Clo.

Clo made a certain statement. Something to discuss about. How can internet be compared to traditional media, and how can someone use it to reach its audience. How to be dared to implement new ways.
And that's when I noticed all represented speakers were part of a 'traditional' set up. All had a 'redactie', 'writers/journalists'. As if the internet is a copy of printed media.
Which, sorry to say, it is not.
I certainly missed debrakkehondblogt in the panel, and if not available, the video speakers on the podium, to discuss with the available speakers.
That could have turned into a nice interesting talk.

It is when Urbanmag presented their renewed site, I noticed there is still a long way to go: 'we implemented a new look, comments and rss'.
Heck, it is nothing else than the structure of a blog, in a different lay out...
And that's the whole point, when does online representation matters. When you can be found, in google, when your content gets aggregated in other sites.
In the end you get the same story as offline: you have to reach your potential readers.
I think Urbanmag, if they did well and implemented a blog cms, will get more successful in its genre.
Mainly because it will get a better place in google, and thus more readers.

Do I think online critics matter?
They do. But only when I trust the source. And even then, I agree with Corneel, I'll trust a friend often better than an online critique. I guess that's exactly what Vooruit is busy with: enabling you or your friends to upload your own critique and thus influencing possible visitors.

Emma

Picture 5-5
Our prime minister made a website for kids.
As LVB, I think the site is meant to adults more than to kids anyway.
But I have to say I was rolling on the floor when seeing the story of Emma, the Prime Ministers' dog.
Imagine our Prime Minister walking around with his dog in Wetstraat 16. C'mon, kind of a joke.
Really...
Anyhooo, I liked it. I like the stories of Emma. And I like her Gentish accent.
Not sure if it is all very effective.
But again: this is the new way of campaigning, whether we like it or not.

Threadless Summer Sale

Picture 1-15 I definitely went a bit shopping crazy when seeing this announcement: Threadless is doing Summer Sales...
The result? Something like 6 tees that should be on their way. If the post office get's back to work that is. Otherwise I might receive them at the end of summer. Or something like that...

Which one you wonder? This for sure is one of my favs. Will be surprising you with the rest during summer.
Ha! Shopping on Sunday rocks :)

Emma online

E Emma CloudYesterday I was part of a jury at KHM Mechelen (and I am not gonna tell any outcomes as I know some of the students are reading this blog ;) )

One of the projects of the students was the Emma ARP game (am I saying it right) and we got a look into the scenes of the game.
I admit, I haven't followed the game that much, since, well, I think the whole Emma series sucks, and en plus, I don't have a TV.
I do remember some blogs posting about it, especially about being invited for the press conference which was held a little unluckily in the middle of the day.(Now I also remember that the bloggers complained about that, but heck they didn't complain about Microsoft doing the same, with the new Vista included. *It is so damn easy to break down everything...*)

I was nicely surprised
1) to see the stats of the sites. There are a lot of people participating (4626) ! And it is mainly their target audience. So hip hip huraah for the designers and developers.
2) to be introduced to the games as they are not a real ARP, but an easier variant. I like them. It is not die hard, but still something anybody might want to play. (if they have plenty of time that is)
3) to see the web of games that were developed, to see the different sites on paper, and get a grasp on how such a thing grows.
4) to see a sneak preview of the final game, and I think it will rock. So I advise you all (especially the bloggers with plenty of critics on the matter ;) ) to peep into the thing again.

New Photo Backpack

54 Probackbag31 MainIn 3 weeks I am traveling abroad for work.

I used to have a splendid backpack for my camera but it kind of broke due to over-use.
Yesterday I ran into a shop in Mechelen, and I saw the professional succeeder of my bag. They didn't have the small size, so I ordered it today at one of my favorite local shops.
Delsey started a while ago with photo bags, and some how they are pretty practical, and rather stylish compared to other bags.
Foto konijnenberg doesn't offer them, actually a lot of shops don't offer them. Which is a pity.

Buy me that magic eraser :)

Magiceraser1Reminder to myself: after reading a bunch of blog posts on the matter i NEED these magic erasers as they seem the perfect solution to get rid of the paint on the wall (yeah, I managed to paint a part of the wall instead of the tv table...)
Read on a blog: "Just be careful not to put too much pressure when you're rubbing or you'll rub the paint off the wall. Overall it has worked great for me though."
Well hey I'll put loads of pressure to get rid of those stains... Hope it doesn't remove my wall ;)

But why am I posting this story online? Because it is the proof of good products. This product 'works' so everyone talks about it and reviews it positively online.
There is the story of the locks that has almost killed a company due to blogposts. The magic eraser might become a story where bloggers made a company rich...
