Global tipping point within 10 years

Icecap3

The global warming issue is really starting to heat up. In a startling article from abcnews.com, author Bill Blakemore brings to light NASA and Columbia University Earth Institute has recently conducted study that verifiably asserts that with just 10 more years of business as usual, it becomes impractical to avoid disastrous effects.
The forecast, as articulated by the
study's lead author, James Hansen of NASA, sounds like the worst parts of the Bible, predicting everything from increasingly rapid sea-level rise, increased frequency of droughts and floods, and increased stress on wildlife and plants due to rapidly shifting climate zones.
The 10-year timeframe shows other recent climate studies to have underestimated the urgency of the window in which we can make significant changes.

Another reason not to make a baby... :)

Put Technorati tags on your site

Widget-Toptags-BlogTechnorati offers you a way to show your tags into a tagcloud. You need to copy paste some code, adapt a bit and if you ping your tags, something will appear in that cloud.
Nice thing, if it weren't for the fact it is way ugly.

When trying to configure the thing I got some unexpected help from Lode Vanhove, who fetched the CSS code, and adapted it.
He wrote down CSS code, which I copy here below to help you configure it.
It removes the standard style and allows you to fit it into your own site

First make sure you copy paste the code into your template. You'll probably put it in a sidebar, or in a footer like on this site.

Then adapt your CSS by adding the stuff below.
You can tweak it a little bit, to adapt it to your needs.

Start copying here:

/* Eliminate backgroundcolor */
div.tags {
background-color: transparent !important;
}
/* Hide "on name_of_your ste", "get widget" and "technorati badge" */
div.tags h4, div.tr-blog-top-tags h3, div.tr-blog-top-tags a img, div.tr-blog-top-tags a {
display: none !important;
}
/* Bij hiding "get widget" we also hid the tags, so we have to bring them back */
div.tr-blog-top-tags div.tags a {
display: inline !important;
}
/* Define a new width */
div.tr-blog-top-tags {
width:350px !important;
}
/* Force right link color and style for the tags */
a:link, div.tags a:link {
font-weight: normal;
color: #628699 !important;
}
a:visited, div.tags li a:visited {
color: #628699 !important;
}
a:active, div.tags li a:active {
color: #628699 !important;
}
a:hover, div.tags li a:hover {
color: #628699 !important;
text-decoration:underline !important;
background-color:#000000;
}

The difference

L 00015074-1Yesterday I went to the shop to check for the Canon G7. It looks like a large Lomo, same texture; decent material, and a flash feet. I guess that's why I like it even more.

My intention was simple: go check the cam in a shop and buy it online, because it is cheaper.

I went to shop F in center of town, and when I asked to see the cam and have the battery on to test it, the guy said: 'The battery is flat.'
And then 'You can come back next week when it is loaded.'
He was very specific about coming back 'during the week'. (Probably because a Saturday 'is too busy'?)

So today I went to shop M out of town. (I really wanted to see the cam and feel it before buying it online)
The battery was flat too.
But the guy ran around, checked the computer, found another cam and let me try it out for 20 minutes.
Everything I asked him, he knew, and he really helped me to get to know the camera better. And I was in instant love. (With the camera that is ;) )

The difference with the online buy was 20 euro. Not to mention the waiting time (online offering can take a while) and availability (here I was sure to take a camera home)

So I bought it.
Why? Because his knowledge and his service convinced me.

Moose

ACMO.jpgVlaemsch is a new label formed by the renowned Belgian designer, Casimir. The designs are witty, conceptual, and thought-provoking. Augustin Scott de Martinville studied at the famous local design school, Ecal. His aim is to edit each new year a series of objects that are linked to a self-imposed theme.

The first year's theme is the reinterpretation of the codes of bourgeois furniture. The Moose & Deer Head are part of this series: a modernised, somehow abstract version of the trophy head, executed in triplicate.

"We wanted something light to stress the heavy drama that is usually associated with this object - the killing of the animal and the stuffing of the head."

Orchid

orchid.jpgOrchid is a set of clothes-hooks, the petals bent so that articles can be hung from them. This is a product in the sphere of emotion, refinement, poetic beauty and harmony. As such, it can also be simply decorative and give rise to floral combinations.

Convinced that objects can change the world, Charlotte Lancelot tackles all their dimensions. Starting from observation and study of functions, she draws attention to the emotional well-being that they procure and the new lifestyles that they suggest. It is with subtlety and refinement that she develops her products, making them clever and poetic in her absolute commitment to meeting our requirements.

Aware that objects are a matter of desire and that we only acquire them because they speak to us and about us, Charlotte Lancelot devises creative and playful concepts around the theme of durable development, which is one of the main lines of her research. Examples of this are projects like the Embroidery carpets or the Emporte bags developed during the Looplab workshop on factory wastes and preferred materials of hers like felt and wood. We should emphasize the consistency of her approach, with as a key aspect her determination to treat objects in their entirety… from design to production, to warehousing, to sale, to being second or third hand.

So what's up you ask?

Picture 2-8
At this moment I am going high speed to get the sites ready for all graduate students of KASK.be

College and splendid designer Pixelman.be designed the subsites, and at this moment we are inserting all info, plus are fully busy with copying the different lay outs.
I am proud to say we'll be the first art school in Belgium presenting fully integrated graduation sites (yeah I know several disciplines had their own sites and there is nothing new to that, but our school insists in presenting a final graduation show for all disciplines together.)
Kaskweek 2007 is launching soon.
Meanwhile, you can go and see our fashion show on June 9

MT 4.0

Brandingimg
This blog is running on MovableType. Somehow, since it early beginning, and my early blogging, since 2002, I have been using MT. I like their interface, and after so many years and the launch of so many other blog systems, I still prefer theirs.
Especially when getting to clients, nothing can beat their UI in straight forwardness.
Wordpress is the best competitor but the designer in me likes the look and feel of MT better.
It is nice to see they developed the 4.0 with even a cleaner UI. So I can't wait to test it.
(Actually I'll be happy to try one in Dutch, our brand new family blog I want to launch will be the perfect test.)

The new stuff I really look forward to:

- A completely redesigned user interface
- Get an at-a-glance summary of your blogging activity from content to contributors on our new dashboard
- Easily insert text, photos, files and more with a rich WYSIWYG editing
- Built-in asset, photo and file management
- Built-in member registration system for reader and comment authentication
- Support for OpenID
- Aggregate posts from multiple blogs into a single blog

Mjammie...

Handcrafted stuff

Lenovo Reserve

5000$ is a bit much for a computer... But this Lenovo Thinkpad looks nice.
(I do wonder about how user friendly it is though. It doesn't seem to be an easy to use this keyboard.)
The attractive part of this computer lies in its design, but also in the impression they give you you'll have 'one unique piece', handcrafted, with leather gone through a men's hands.
This 'uniqueness' also can be found in the fact you'll need a password to enter the site. You are selected or you are not...

As I am browsing several sites a day, I am stunned by the amount of 'hand crafted luxury' that is being offered today. It certainly looks like the anti-movement, against industrialization. Puma, Nike, and many more, turning a mass product into a luxurious product, and giving you the impression an Italian leather craftsmen is making your piece.
While that's just the advertisement of course :)

I guess we have come to the moment where we want to be different from the mass again, and as we are high profiled consumers, we have the budget to spend.

Adhese vs Adsense and others

I was one of the first to be enthusiast about Adhese/Enchanté, and was glad to help them out a bit, getting them introduced in the blogosphere.
I admit: I am not against advertisement. I am not part of the group of bloggers that thinks 'advertisement' is 'dirty' and compromises the neutrality of your content. (written with respect to those who don't want ads. Internet is anarchy and anarchy rules :) )

John might think Enchanté doesn't pay enough, I m pretty happy about them.
As I am not an easy person myself, I checked some other services.

Elections.

Sunday we have to vote. Aaaaaaaaaaaargh.
I have no clue who to vote for.
I mean: I truly believe 'purple' did not so bad. Face it: our economy is blooming (and I know for sure as I am working in the last segment: publishing. It's the first one they cut money on when things go bad.)
I don't want CD&V to rule the country.
I don't like the 'C' in their name. It stands for 'conservative' in my eyes... (Yes I am gay, and yes I know they cannot take away what they gave during the last 8 years)
What bothers me is that you seem to vote for a Prime Minister these days and not for a group of politicians.
I cannot imagine Letherme as the leader of this country. I wonder what will change then.
Johan van de Lanotte then?
Admit the little movie rocks. :)
But when I read the lines, I cannot help but think 'where will the money come from?'

So.. do you know who to vote for??

Ecuador Ecological Disaster

Home Img01While Ecuador seemingly promotes eco travel and seems a place where people want to take care of the environment, Ecuador does have its own natural disasters...

Ecuador is the site of a troubling ecological disaster that threatens the rainforest and indigenous groups. Billions of gallons of toxic waste water have been dumped into Ecuador’s rainforest – potentially one of the worst oil-related disasters on the planet.

Once a pristine rainforest, the area is now filled with more than 700 open-air toxic waste pits and hundreds of swamps and streams filled with oil muck.

Approx 18.5 billion gallons of highly carcinogenic toxic waste dumped into unlined pits dug out of the earth and into swamps, streams and rivers.

The amount dumped is far greater than that spilled during the Exxon Valdez incident. Experts consider the impact to be the worst ecological catastrophe on the planet other than Chernobyl.

Adventure Ecology is site showing all kinds of ecological disasters through arts and internet. They want to raise awareness on these matters.They also offer an artist in residence program, allowing artists to stay in certain places while working on art on eco awareness.

Logmein Free Mac
Do you have 2 computers? You sometimes want to access the one at home but are not able to? Or you have a family member or friend who is stuck with the computer all the time and you can't come over?
Apple offers Apple Remote 4, but it'll cost you 500 bucks.
Or you can use a VNC, but again, there will be some configuring to be done.
Today, Log Me In is previewing their Mac solution, and for the moment it is for free, as they need feedback for the product.
It is a one click install, a registering, and surfing to a site to access your computer.
I certainly love it as there is no need to configure a dynamic dns and sofort. Enjoy it while it lasts I'd say ;)

'I am going to celebrate the birthday of my daughter today' (Verhofstadt)

'I am gonna go for a beer', 'I'll drink a beer', 'No champagne, I'll have a beer' (Leterme)

'I am going to my mama' (Vandelanotte)

Police On Web

Police On Web 200Barely a day after introducing Police on Web, my bicycle got stolen in our underground garage. We called 101, but they called back asking us to make the declaration online. Which I did today (I had to find my token, since I have no e-ID yet)

Police On Web is easy.
You log in, fill in the fields confirm and that's it.
I have to say the forms are very clear and easy, and it certainly is a lot easier than going to the police office, wait and see someone fill in a document in an old typewrites (as a matter of speaking ;) )

Now, I'll have to wait for the second part: will or won't they find the bicycle back...

Another Black Sunday...

Picture 4-11It is truly sad to see how people become conservative once things go well in your country.

I think we forget how lucky we are to live in Belgium, not to live in a country in war, or in a poor country. A country with social rights, with decent health and social security. With pensions that aren't that bad, when you compare it to the nearing countries.
It indeed proves that Flemish people are narrow minded, and conservative when it comes to sharing.

Heck, for whatever we have, 98% of the others are poor. Poor as in: no 14.000 euro on a bank account.

Today I am tempted to become an expat again.
Truly...

e-Passports

A research team in cryptography from the Catholic University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve) disclosed serious weaknesses in the Belgian biometric passport, the only type of passport distributed in Belgium since the end of 2004.
The work carried out in Louvain-la-Neuve during the course of May 2007 show that *Belgian passports issued between end 2004 and July 2006 do not include any security mechanism to protect the personal data* embedded in the passport's microchip.
Passports issued after July 2006 do benefit from security mechanisms but these ones are flawed.
This means that anyone possessing a little electronic reading device, which is easy and cheap to acquire, can steal the passport content while it is still in the pocket of the victim owners and thus without their knowing. Face and signature are among the data at risk.
This news is all the more surprising because Karel De Gucht, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, declared in the Parliament on 9th January 2007 that the Belgian passport benefited from the security mechanisms advocated by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Gildas Avoine, Kassem Kalach, and Jean-Jacques Quisquater (leader of the
crypto group at UCL) found that first-generation Belgian passports fail to include any security mechanism that would ensure the protection of personal data. The researchers carried out a demo that showed it was possible to read first generation passport from a short distance, potentially while it is still in the pocket of a prospective victim.

The past

She told me she had been browsing my archives of an almost forgotten past. How it made her smile and how I sounded so young back then.
She made me read my past again, made me smile, and think on how I sounded such a dreamer back then.

That in fact I haven't changed so much, and how she reminds me of that every day.
How I might teach her how to dream.
How she reminds me to keep on dreaming...

Work work work

I have an overdose of work at the moment.
(Probably very good to take my mind of other things... ;) )

Anyhoooo... The main reason why I am a bit low on posting is because it is the end of the academic year, and like last year, we are trying to make something nice out of it for our graduating students.

Last year this time I was working day and night to make sure the www.kask.be site could be launched in time.
This year, I am working day and night to build and fill the system, to make every graduation student his 'fiche' with graduation project and contact information and so fort.
(I am pretty proud to present it, as no other (art)school in Belgium did this before in this manner: from this year onwards each year, all graduation projects will be available online in a cms system. That way we want to build a library online of our graduating students.)

We launched www.movement.be recently, and Thursday we'll officially launch the new www.kaskweek.be site. (if we get there in time that is..)

Opening of the KASK week is on June 21, at 7PM. You are welcome to join in!

Some screens:

Remark: the design and css of this site is done by Pixelman.be, I am responsible for coordination and getting the content into the site.

Even more work...

Counting down: in 3 days I am taking a flight to Turkey, for work.
We're staying 4 days.

I only need to work 1/2 day of that.

And the hotel is 5 star...
And there is a beach...
And the temperature is 29 degrees C...
And there are women in bikinis *hehe C, only to put you on your horses ;) *

3 days, that like only 72 hours :)

*continues working another night to catch the deadlines...*

Bring the love back

Sat with Kris today for lunch, and while we were talking about general stuff, the subject stumbled upon advertising and the change in media. He pointed out to this fabulous ad, saying the consumer changed.

The Break Up

How we changed indeed...
So I do wonder: are companies listening when their consumers write something on the product, or did they just find a new way to spend advertising money elsewhere (in blogs that is ;) )

Btw, the (daring) ad was made by Boondoogle Stef Selleslaghs. It is Belgian indeed!
It was ‘top rated video of all time‘ by the YouTube community (now still second) and has been viewed over 2.7 million times. (That's another ad of Stef)

Admitted

Admitted, the Apple freak in me is alive, but it died a bit when getting this MacBookPro last year.
I know there are a lot that envy me for 'just receiving' one from work. But dunno, it never felt like 'home'.
I miss my 12inch, which was bumped, and full of 'scars', and slow in the end, but fitted me well.
This one annoys me. (Ok, I am nagging I know.)

The thing is, I just can't sell it as it is from school.** (And that's probably why I ended up with a first series instead of the third one, which probably lacks the bugs this one has.)
I feel like reinstalling everything over again, although I did it not so long ago... I almost feel like installing Vista on it... (naaaaaaaah, got you there ;) * )

Things happened to me:
-hard disk failure
-power cord fire
-battery life sucks
-and now the surface seems to be peeling off.
-it often cannot cope with my necessity to multitask...

Somehow it feels like, since Apple became more popular to the mass, the quality of their products is going down.
I still have the feeling the os is the most stable and reliable, but it seems to be the hardware that is lacking some power...

Apple freaks out there, having similar problems?

* I do have Vista running, on my Mac Mini. Looks good these days, I admit.
** If and when a smaller 12inch MacBookPro gets released I'll be the first to have one. (second series that is.)

Schoonste Boerin 2007

Yes, indeed I am back from the Turkish Riviera.
And it was no joke: I had to work there.

A while ago, the meanwhile famous contest 'Schoonste Boerin van Vlaanderen' was held, and the winners got a trip as result.
I got invited as the photographer.

I admit, my idea on farming changed a lot since I am working for Field, a communication bureau, working a lot for agriculture.
Agriculture and farming has changed a lot and is quite different from the idea we have.
Schoonste Boerin is a contest trying to prove this, and develop the communication around agriculture.

I know by now, when they ask me to picture a farmer, I will not meet the stereotype anymore. You have to go and visit a farm to understand what I am talking about: it is full of technology...

The three selected ladies were, except from beautiful, extremely smart...
I never met such daring entrepreneurs. At 26, and 28, two of them have a flourishing company, invested a lot (as agriculture certainly ain't the cheapest business to choose), and re-invested too.
They gave me an insight on reglementation (which, I can assure you, is quite strict in Belgium, that strict, that by now, I am convinced that our production is amongst the safest around)
Their insight on investing and entrepreneurship certainly made me feel like 'small meat'.

And most of all: I had loads of fun with them.

There she goes... There she goes again...

There she goes
There she goes again
Racing through my brain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

There she goes
There she goes again
Pulsing through my veins
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains

Pour un flirt avec toi ...

Plane

This might come as a surprise to you, it certainly came as a surprise to me too.
Monday, while in Turkey, I got a nice invitation in the mail.
Tuesday, I checked it out.
Wednesday I went to the travel agency.
And Thursday I found myself on a plane.
After 20 hours of flight time, I arrived on the other side of the world...

So from now onwards, the next 3 weeks will not be about webdesign, gizmo or other stuff, but about travelling around on the other side of the world.
I don´t promise anything as I might decide I take a week off from blogging (how´s that?)(yes mum and grandmum, I know you want the updates if all is ok, so those will be posted here anyway)
Pictures will be uploaded in Flickr.

Enjoy :)

First stop

Stopover: Atlanta.

And through all the fuzz and the fastness of arranging this trip, I totally forgot I would have a stopover in the States.
Before stopovers I did elsewhere didn´t require a passport registration, you´d wait in the airport lounge and advance to the right gate. No real entry in the country.
In the States registration was needed anyway, and thus I found myself fingerprinted! and pictured for their files.
I don´t know how you feel about this, but I suddenly felt like being in one of these futuristic movies, where all of us can be found, located in a huge database of this nation.
Homeland Security it is called... Dunno, didn´t like it at all... Will write about this again I believe.

In Atlanta, I needed to change flights, for Peru, Lima.
Somehow someone gave me an upgrade and I ended up in business class, and I can tell you: I didn´t mind at all. Champagne upon entering the plane, delicious food brought by your (almost)personal assistent, and a private television. And huge seats compared to the charter I took (only) 3 days ago in Turkey.

Business and champagne

Food

Anyhow, although the great seats, I crashed in Lima for a well deserved sleep over.
Tonight, I have to take 2 more flights to arrive where I have to be.
But first, explore Lima a for a day...

Arrived

I have been taking airplanes like busses lately: 5 flights, in 2 days, and finally arrived where I wanted to be :)

The schedule was as follows:
-Brussels - Atlanta
-Atlanta - Lima
-Lima - La Paz
-La Paz - Santa Cruz
-Santa Cruz - Sucre

And there it ended, very high in the mountains in this charming city.
Or better: here's where the trip starts...
Sucre is a delightful city,m with delicious for at 3 euro a meal!, a beautiful patio in our 22dollar hotel, with enough sun, and strange mojito´s.
Will be picturing it in the next 2 days.
Well.. a bit.
Next to enjoying vacation :)

Slow internet here, so pictures will have to wait a bit...

Arrived in Uyuni

After some magnificent (but cold) days at very high height in Sucre and Potosi, we headed for Uyuni today. Which is even colder...
I recommend you to google it, or to look in Flickr for pics...

It is darn cold here (sitting with gloves and ugly llama hood while typing) so I recommend coming back later, or reading some recent posts of c for more news as I am too damn lazy to tape anything (as I am freezing and heading for a cozy bed.)

Pics will follow certainly but maybe much later as internet really is slow...
