Admitted, the Apple freak in me is alive, but it died a bit when getting this MacBookPro last year.
I know there are a lot that envy me for 'just receiving' one from work. But dunno, it never felt like 'home'.
I miss my 12inch, which was bumped, and full of 'scars', and slow in the end, but fitted me well.
This one annoys me. (Ok, I am nagging I know.)

The thing is, I just can't sell it as it is from school.** (And that's probably why I ended up with a first series instead of the third one, which probably lacks the bugs this one has.)
I feel like reinstalling everything over again, although I did it not so long ago... I almost feel like installing Vista on it... (naaaaaaaah, got you there ;) * )

Things happened to me:
-hard disk failure
-power cord fire
-battery life sucks
-and now the surface seems to be peeling off.
-it often cannot cope with my necessity to multitask...

Somehow it feels like, since Apple became more popular to the mass, the quality of their products is going down.
I still have the feeling the os is the most stable and reliable, but it seems to be the hardware that is lacking some power...

Apple freaks out there, having similar problems?

* I do have Vista running, on my Mac Mini. Looks good these days, I admit.
** If and when a smaller 12inch MacBookPro gets released I'll be the first to have one. (second series that is.)

For more than a year now, I look forward to this saturday: the day when I will order my Mac. 'm sick and tired of all this Windows-crap, so I'm making 'The Switch'. I first doubted to buy a 15" MacBook Pro, but I made up my mind. I decided to buy two macs at once. I'm buying an 20" iMac, combined with a 13" MacBook. Two computers is safer then one (if one crashes, I still got the other one).

Smart choice? Someone better idea? Advise?

I'm at the developer conference at the moment and there are like 4000 macbook-pro's here and 1000 macbooks here. Maybe i should do a survey? ;-)

My old Powerbook G4 12" is getting a little slow, but I still love it and use it 24/7. I was doubting on getting a macbook pro. However, since I don't do much graphical work it would seem that the normal macbook is better value for me.

I hear a lot of complaints though about the pro-series. I can think of at least two persons I know IRL that had problems with theirs (one minor problems, the other one like your problems), I saw a guy in the Apple Store obviously showing a fault in his, and some of the blogs I read are from apple aficionados that had problems with theirs too. So you may be right about degrading quality.

I was also hoping for an announcement here at WWDC of a replacement for my 12", especially since there are rumors of a solid state machine (no hard drive) that would seem perfect for my needs. But alas, all is iPhone it seems... You may be right that Apple has shifted focus away from making "perfect" machines, I'm afraid. I hope not, though.

I think I'll buy a macbook. Having a 24" iMac, I then will have almost Pieter's configuration and it sounds like the perfect setup.

I'm a PC user running Windows XP and many people try to convince me to switch over to Mac. My only link with Apple at this moment is my iPod which has already been replaced twice in one year. I was planning on using the iPod as a backup disk (I got 60GB) but it seems unrealiable as hell. I also hate iTunes with its Mac interface. I think it's rude they pushed their candy-button-interface to a Windows environment. Also the iPhone seems a rip-off because you need to register with your credit card at iTunes in order to use it. All those little -monopolistic- details make me stay with PC. PC isn't perfect but at least there are several hardware and software options to choose from.

I'm glad finally a Mac user is honest and tells about his problems.

In 6 months, I had 3 macbook pro's. They all had different failures right from the start. I always kept complaining to apple and when they launched their seconde revision macbook pro serie, I received one of those :) Never had problems since then

Earlier this year the backlighting of my PowerBook G4 17" stopped working. Apparently the inverter needs to be replaced. Apple does not do that, they only replace the whole display, which is quite expensive. I am currently in the Middle East, think worst place, and have no choice but using the PB with an external screen on my desk, like a desktop. I cant use it in meetings anymore or when traveling or in my accommodation. For that I have a DELL Latitude D800, my pre-APPLE laptop.
So, now I'm always traveling with two laptops and have the MacBook in my workplaces connected to external screens and my XP machine in my accommodations. Heavy stuff!

I also had a HD failure this spring and programmes suddenly hang and nothing goes anymore. The finder freezes or iTunes while adding music files or looking for artwork. I replaced the HD with a bigger one, but re-installing all software was/is hell, not the installation so much, but the configurations. Cant wait to buy a new laptop, when in the US next (fall?). I think it will be the new MacBook Pro 17" with the high resolution. I was waiting for that for years, my 4-5 year old latitude already has a resolution of 1920x1200 WUXGA and I could never understand why APPLE could not have that as well.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro from work. The battery doesn' charge anymore (problem on motherboard). It's also quite big and not ideal to work laying in my sofa. My soft crashes a lot too.

I have an iBook 14" which is perfect for surfing, on the road and throwing. The Macbook Pro is good for at the office. But I'm considering a macbook (or 12" Pro) for travelling and on the road.
