Paradise now...
Yesterday we watched 'Paradise now' a movie on a day in the life of 2 suicide bombers. I admit, I still am attracted to movies coming from Israel or Palestine.
PARADISE NOW" is the story of two young Palestinian men as they embark upon what may be the last 48 hours of their lives. On a typical day in the West Bank city of Nablus, where daily life grinds on amidst crushing poverty and the occasional rocket blast, we meet two childhood best friends, Saïd (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman), who pass time drinking tea, smoking a hookah, and working dead-end menial jobs as auto mechanics.
Saïd is approached by middle-aged Jamal (Amer Hlehel), a point man for an unnamed Palestinian organization, who informs Saïd that he and Khaled have been chosen to carry out a strike in Tel Aviv. They have been chosen for this mission as a team, because each had expressed a wish that if either is to die a martyr, the other would want to die alongside his best friend.
"PARADISE NOW" follows two Palestinian childhood friends who have been recruited for a strike on Tel Aviv and focuses on their last days together. When they are intercepted at the Israeli border and separated from their handlers, a young woman who discovers their plan causes them to reconsider their actions.
I really wondered how this controversial movie would handle such a political theme.
I was silently surprised to see how the director really showed whole lot of reality and stupidity. On both sides.
And meanwhile it still had some hilarious scenes.
The story line is rather thin, and it is certainly a slow film but yet I never felt it during the movie.
When I left for Israel and for the Palestinian territories, I remember asking Yasser several times 'How can someone decide to give up life?'
After 2 years living over there I can say I think I understand how someone can come to such an act. For someone not having lived there, this movie truly gives a worthwhile insight.
Quote I remember best?: 'They manage to be the occupier and the victim in the same moment, ..., I cannot do but die and kill.'
Things that struck me: it is filmed in real places, and gives a really accurate view on how life is over there.
Feelings I remember myself: when crossing a checkpoint, you feel the humiliation and the hate growing inside yourself. The film reflects it well.
I had to smile when seeing Palestine on my screen, recalling reality in my head.
And how I long to go back.
To both sides...
Really worth seeing!
-When you rent the dvd do check the extra's like the making of. You'll see some difficulties they had making it.-

Ikea...
A roommate moving means different furniture... (We had *almost* the same shelves before)
So we ended up with new Ikea bookshelves to mount. Dunno, but Ikea very often lacks the details in finishing. Me lying on the shelves isn't testing it's strength, it's just a attempt to finish the details...
Do you like Ikea? Or do you have horror stories on construction.
Do you also wonder how much the workers in the factories earn when they manage to offer us 6 glasses for 2 euro?
Ikea, yes or no?

Belgium enjoys no government...
Belgium has been without a government for three months and some people wonder whether it matters.
Actually I was wondering yesterday: September is the month politics is starting business again. So what's going to happen now?
What are those people in the cabinet doing these days? ;)
And is Verhofstadt just continuing or are the bosses gone?
I mean: who is leading the country at this point??
(Not Leterme I guess.)
(And if this continues, will we become a test case like 'Jericho', will chaos organize itself? ;P)

Sony Press Event: new Alpha camera
A few weeks ago I got a phone call asking me whether I was interested, being a blogger, to go, as a blogger, to the press event of Sony, launching their newest reflex camera: Alpha.
I agreed.
So today I am on my way to Baveno, Italy, to hear all about this precious new baby Sony is announcing.
It is no new news that Sony is reaching high: they want to become the best in the DSLR market.
A hard task when even Nikon has trouble catching up with Canon.
But, as Sony proved before: they claimed the same with video gaming, and they successfully passed Nintendo and others, and became a world leader in gaming with their PSP.
So, they might have some surprises for us.
Also remember: the CMOS of the recent Nikon DSLR's is in coop with Sony.
Their first Alpha's missed a bit the point: a lack of enough good (Carl Zeiss) lenses and it was rather a 'consumer' camera than pro.
Launching a prosumer reflex will certainly need some technical improvements, next to a new series of Carl Zeiss lenses, and a better CMOS. (fullframe if possible.)
I secretly hope they tried to insert features towards the future like wifi and geolocation.
Because I truly believe to surpass Canon, there is a definite need for re-thinking features to make some stuff easier.
I'll try to keep you all updated while there (with pics and words)
The program for today: intro to everyone.
Program for tomorrow: Press conference at 8.00 AM, workshops + interviews at 9.30, experiences (with the new Alpha camera's) in the afternoon. (+ Flight back in the evening.)
Fingers crossed they have wifi in the room...
(I'll post to Flickr, and to Twitter -as this seems a good 'channel' to broadcast this news-)

Meanwhile for you: what do you want from a digital reflexcamera?

My perfect camera
While asking that last question, and with some time off on the plane, I started to think about 'my perfect digital reflex camera'
For sure it would have
-full frame
-better in high lights and better at lower iso (let's say, equal film instead of dia...)
-raw
-spot measuring (many camerma's lack this)
-razor sharp 2.8 zoomlens
-12million pixels at least
-fast response
-look and feel like a FM3 but then digital ;)
or
-have the possibility to change aperture on the lens again (as I do miss it) // Nikon analogue
-have a simple way to insert some basic IPTC info, so I don't need to add it afterwards (copyright, etc.)
-give me location for my IPTC (geo location through GPS: if they cram a gps in a Nokia N95, they certainly should be able to put it in a monster like the 5D)
-nice extra would be: fast wifi to transfer images wirelessly (sure usb2.0 goes fast, but sometimes it is easy to fetch that one image wirelessly from your camera)
-better against dust (Canon dust remover is a nice add on I believe.)
Actually: a basic fm3 put into digital version and with spot measuring would feel so nice...

Sony Press Event: the new Alpha reflex being released.
Press release of new Alpha 700:
I will update this page a much a possible. You can also read some stuff at Twitter.com/matuvu as this seems a quite good way to use twitter ;)
8.00: Speech starts.
8.15: Sony never made it a secret they wanted to become leader in digital imaging.
(In my opinion a high goal they're aiming at, but then again, few years ago, they wanted to do the same thing in the gaming market, and they successfully passed Nintendo, and they certainly caught a large piece of the gaming market with their PSP, and later on, their PSP portable became a huge success. SO we might be surprised)
8.21: Toru Katsumoto comes to speech.
8.22: launching 2 new models higher than the Alpha: presenting one today: the Alpha 700
8.23: features: excellent shooting + excellent viewing.
8.24: excellent shooting:
-new 12.24 CMOS 'Exmor', low noise digital signal enabling 3200 shooting
-supersteadyshot: anti shake, slow shutterspeed easier to shoot with.
-better magnesium lightweight body
-better dust an moisture resistance.
-690 grammes
-5fps high speed continious
-nw 11-point high performance AF
8.28: excellent viewing
-HDMI interface: you can connect it to your Sony Bravia :)
you don't need no longer a projector or diaprojector, but can connect you're camera straight away to your HD tv.
-PhotoTV HD on Bravia: photo-like quality of Full HD Still pictures. The Sony Bravia got adapted to make sure the Bravia reproduces fine quality and better color.
-bigger LCD: 921k dot 3.0: rather large LCD with better quality so you can see your images in light conditions.
-new raw high speed software.
8.31: conclusion: better camera.
8.32: 4 more new lenses.
-DT 16-105mm f3.5-5.6
-DT 18-250mm f3.5-6.63
-DT 70-300 f4.5-5.6 G SSM (with super sonic motor)
8.34: new grip + other accessoiries, like filters
8.35: Richard Kalvar from Magnum Photos comes to stage. Says he wouldn't use the Alpha 100 professionally, but he would use the 700, since it meets all his necessities: 12milj pixels, raw, good zeiss lenses and good speed.
Shows off his pictures shot with it.
Field report: light camera, good grip, finger naturally on release button, easy change iso settings, essential control within reach.
But what is lacking according to him: full frame. But he says 'We might expect this anytime soon'...
We are off to test the camera now. More news later.

Sony Press Event: the new Alpha reflex being released, first hands on...
First hands on the new camera:
-Incredibly convenient body. Really! It is much more convenient than my Canon in handling. All buttons are within thumbs/ index finger reach. Good plus for photographers.
-Really nice button that allows manual focussing at your thumb.
-Spot measuring.
-The 3200 iso is usable in black/white. I doubt color is always accurate. But admitted: noise is less than on my 1600 setting on Canon 20D.
-I don't like the feeling of lens.
My comments regarding the release:
-Lack of full frame is a pity. But they went for prosumer, and not for professional (I expect indeed a next release with full frame)
-I miss more Carl Zeiss lenses as frankly speaking, that would be my main reason to buy an Alpha instead of the other brands. (People need to know that lenses are more important than amount of pixels)

Useful design
Design is in many cases just making something useful into something beautiful.
It doesn't necessary add something to our comfort.
Product design in many cases does.
Like in this one: a universal toilet.
Incredibly smart and useful I believe. And beautiful on top.

Vitrine 2007
For ten days solid, Belgian and international fashion designers, fashion students at the Flemish Fashion Departments present their work in shop windows all over the city. Taking the general idea of a shop window to the creative limit, all sorts of shop windows get radically redressed, stocked with surprising goods or transformed into imaginative playgrounds.
VITRINE 2007 - SURFACES
This year’s theme for VITRINE will be SURFACES, in which the participants are challenged to make their own surface in the city centre, think about other and new surfaces, projections, the backstage, the catwalk, or more intimate with a pattern or embroidery...
From the 6th of September til 16th.

Project: Re-design of a bathroom
Last year I bought an apartment. It had a renter... This year the renter is moving out.
So I am considering using the time to renovate the apartment.
Plans were designed already months ago, but as times are changing and projects in our mind are cool, I asked my girlfriend to take a look at it, as she often has the better ideas (on design that is).
As she is still looking for a way to organize her life and fond of little projects like this, I kindly asked her to be the project manager of the renovation project, if it goes life.
First things first (and rather fast since time ticks):
-Is the project a good idea or not?
Apparently it is, as it seems our Flemish government is quite nice to hand over some money when renovating parts of your house. (Info in Dutch)
I am willing to invest some money, as my apartment will certainly raise in value. (Immo is stagnating in Belgium, but renovation will certainly make the value go higher)
750 euro for 1500 euro of investment.
-We have been checking bathtubs and showers, and were pleasantly surprised by its price. Definitely the raise of costs will come due to high labor costs in Belgium...
-Good to know: when you choose for DIY, you'll pay 21% in the shop. When you take a contractor, you'll only pay 6% for stuff. So buying stuff separately and then hire someone cheap might not turn out as cheap as you thought. Nor as professional ;)
-Renovating also means: not being able to live/rent the apartment for a while: so finding a fast solution might be expensive at first, but cheaper in the end...
What will it cost me to renovate my bathroom is the next big question I am checking now.
My dad is supposed to make an estimate this weekend (since he once did nothing but these projects he should know best...)
That will define a yes or a no...
More on this will follow anytime soon. (Such as plans, sketches, and practical outcome..)

Consequences of iPod Touch for mobile browsing
I agree with many that there are enough iPods already.
(Crazy enough iPod turns out a very good name as it reaches beyond 'music' only)
The new iPod seems pretty advanced with its wifi connection.
It isn't the first and certainly won't be the last.
But what does it mean towards the future?
My 2cents:
First of all I think they'll try to hack it just like they did with the iPhone. Which is a good thing.
Because the device can much more than just being an MP3player. It actually has Mac Os X built in...
Will future use like this be possible? I do think so.
But what will be the most relevant development?
We already saw many sites produce special interfaces for the iPhone. (Mediatemple, Facebook, and many others)
Chris Montoya wrote about the sad state of the mobile web, and indeed, it is a rather strange development that 'a web company has developed a website that is intended for 1 browser (Safari mobile) on 1 hardware device (iPhone). If you really think about it, this is worse than the IE4 vs. NN4 days of last decade… then it was a matter of being software-dependent. Now we have websites that are both software- and hardware-dependent'.
Yet, the new iPod will make sure we'll optimize our CSS design for mobile apps to as it truly seems mobile browsing on a small device can/will become mainstream now.

Can many people write one book?
Chapter One
This is turning out rather differently than I had expected, she thought, I could well be on my way to making history. She grabbed her bag and rushed off to catch the last train to the city. Attempting to catch her breath, Kristie found an empty seat and rushed to fill it. She searched the faces of the passengers around her and decided she’d finally lost the tall man in the suit that had been tailing her, but she couldn’t yet loosen the grip on her bag in her lap. As the train lumbered and jostled down the track, she closed her eyes for a moment and wondered just how the hell she had gotten herself into this mess. She felt a tap on her shoulder, and sat looking straight into the eyes of a tall man in the suit. “I believe you dropped this” he said, his voice raspy like he’d been smoking since the day he was born. His eyes were a pale blue and up close she could see a weary sadness in them. Tearing her own eyes from this curious gaze, she forced herself to glance towards his hesitantly outstretched hand. The hand was unlike any other hand that she had ever seen. It reminded her of autumn leaves, spreading out across an open stretch of land, the skin was pale, almost yellow in complexion, yet the fingers were beautifully made things, stretching out towards her. ‘Why are you following me?’ she whispered. “Because you need me.” he replied, narrowing his eyes.
His words made her heart pound uncontrollably and her hands go numb, she was shaking as she reached for the unmarked envelope he was holding. Her mind raced as she tried to imagine what could possibly be contained inside. Kristie began to open the envelope, only to have the old man put out his hand and state, “No, not here.” She paused, slowly sliding the envelope into her bag before asking “Who are you?”

At this moment I am atching an incredibiliy documentary on 'Gay hidden sides on movies', explaining how gay was banned in American movies, and how this ban was stopped later on. Also how Hitchcock and others danced between the lines, and how they managed to bring messages anyway.

Please meet Boutique Vizique! Boutique Vizique is Hendrik Leper and Stijn Schiffeleers, plus a bunch of other artists or experts they invite to collaborate with them once in a while.
Stijn and Hendrik are long known collegues in Ghent with whom I studied at the KASK.
Happy to see them featured on 'We make money not art'
Stijn and Hendrik come from Ghent. If you're into new media art, creativity and design you might have heard of that small-ish Belgian city. They trained as photographer, started working mostly with video, collaborated with sound artists and are now developing interactive installations. The kind we like: playful, witty and beautifully executed.

My girlfriend wants me to take her to a restaurant...
Quite one, we'll have to wait for half a year before we can get in (and we'll need to fly to Barcelona): elBulli serves molecular cuisine by Ferran Adrià
2003. Science department in elBullitaller. Our interest in establishing a dialogue with science began to become consolidated in 2003 when we contacted Pere Castells, a scientist and gourmet. At first, the relationship was informal, but as the Alícia Foundation project took shape, it gradually took on a more professional nature, right up to the implementation of the science department, which represented a bridge between the Workshop and Alícia. With Pere Castells and Íngrid Farré, who joined soon afterwards, we began by organising ourselves, looking for a work structure, establishing contacts with manufacturers of food products, new devices or instruments, gathering information and reading books, and so on. From 2004 onwards, Pere and Íngrid carried on this research in Alícia. We also analysed the world of textures that we had created in recent years (foams, hot jellies, clouds, airs, texlavazza, spherification, etc.), and we decided to find out why these preparations were possible, what physical and chemical processes were involved and how the products that made these textures possible acted. All this was because of our conviction that awareness of the scientific processes involved in cooking constituted the basis for evolution.
Meanwhile I'll buy her one of his books ;)

Help
As mentioned before: I have an apartment, and it has a bathroom (lucky me), but it is plain ugly (unlucky me)
Since my renter is moving out, we have been checking all options for renovation of the bathroom, and it has to been said: we found all our necessities at Brico and X20.
(I know I mentioned the 21% vs 6% tariff, but as we speak, X20 gives an 25% discount... So no need for maintaining that rule)
Yet, that certainly means that I urgently search for someone who can build walls (in gyproc ;) ), a decent plumber, and most important: 'nen vloerder' .
Any of you have someone in mind in the neighborhood of Gent?
*Sitting on her knees* Thanks a dozen!

Ine on Mo-magazine
Few days ago I got mail by Mo-magazine if they could feature some pics on their newly started photoblog.
So freshly on their blog: Iraq before the war (or Iraq under embargo, as you prefer.)
Info: back in april 2002, a friend journalist and I left for Iraq. Iraq was still ruled by Saddam back then (reminder: in March 2003 the US invaded Iraq again, and Saddam was captured)
In 2002, Iraq was suffering a worldwide UN embargo since 1990, and while this should have targeted Saddam, the big losers were the citizens of Iraq. Critics estimate that more than 500,000 Iraqi children died as a result of the sanctions (info).

Re-design of Soundscapes
While the design is nearly finished (some minor bugs when installing and adapting the new K2 theme), C keeps on whispering 'It's sooooo beautiful'. She even got me jealous ;)
Hope you like the new Soundscapes look.
(Yeayeah, we'll be changing the header soon as it is a bit to tall for smaller screens)
Note: K2 is fabulous yet gives some headaches once in a while...
-We cannot manage to change 'Blogroll' into another title (it appears twice then)
-When you call for an archive page the man title inside the template always refers to August, which is also when you click on another month. Strange...

Sideluck Potshow
Slideluck Potshow is a non-profit slideshow and potluck for members of arts, photography, and media communities. Participants bring food, drink, and up to five minutes worth of slides. The evening begins with a couple hours of dining on the home-cooked delights of participants, while drinking and mingling. It is not uncommon to arrive with, for example, a full-bodied bottle of wine, some vegetable samosas, Thai green curry, pumpkin ravioli, or some rosemary lamb chops. All guests are asked to contribute as the event is entirely dependent on participation. Following the potluck, the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and a spectacular slideshow commences.
Slideluck Potshow is a forum for exposing artists, curators and editors to new work, while infusing the arts community with a non-commercial vitality and refreshing exchange. Photojournalists, painters, designers, sculptors, fashion and fine art photographers all show their work alongside one another in a relaxed and spirited atmosphere. Presenters range from the very accomplished to those who have never shown work publicly before, but regardless of status, none is allotted more than five minutes for their slideshow. Past participants include; Elliott Erwitt, Chris Buck, Alec Soth, Martin Schoeller, Doug Menuez, Alex Majoli, Alistair Thain, Bruce Gilden, and Eugene Mirman.

'Saving Seeds'
'Saving Seeds' is a project started by some enthousiastics.
Prof Van Cottem, consultant for Unicef, is gathering as much seeds as possible for little gardens in fugutive camps in the Sahara in Algeria.
It's a simple way to collect your seeds of peppers, eggplants, avocado's, and others, dry them and send them to the professor.
In February 2008 these seeds will be planted to ensure a food supplement for the local inhabitants.
Why Prof Van Cottem doesn't want to work with seeds suppliers you're probably wondering.
Because of business interests.
So don't throw those pits, send them to Beeweg 36 B 9080 Zaffelare
Info on their blog (in Dutch)

Rocking Glass
I saw this glass years ago in a movie. And ever since I have been looking for it: it turns but never falls. Perfect to play with it.
I saw similar but never quite the design I was looking for. And then suddenly it popped up: The Rocking Glass by Normann-Copenhagen.
'Britt Bonnesen invented these cocktail glasses with thick, rounded bottoms after watching a film about old-time airplane travel and noticing how the dinner services were designed to compensate for the propeller plane's vibration. The tempered glass of this drinking set can hold both hot and cold liquids. No need to stir your drink; the rocking motion of the glasses will mix things up for you!'
Can be bought here, but they're not shipping to Europe... Trying to find an importer for Belgium...

TheWhiteHotel
The Brussels WhiteHotel has always been a host to Belgian Designers, with rooms, and spaces filled with Belgian Design, at reasonable rates.
But at Sept 22 and 23, some Belgian Designers are taking over the White Hotel with Designr.rvd. Not only can you see Belgian Design, you're also able to buy it.
And for the party animals: the Designr Party might be your cup of tea :)
(I definitely hope to get there...)

I might be a geek and own a mac...
I am still pretty happy Microsoft invented Office, and made it for Mac.
We're running Office 2004 since, well 2004 I guess. And up to date it is is still the 'latest' build for Mac.
But, hip hip hurah!, Microsoft is building a 2008 version, and they're teasing us with their pre-site.
Ha, the geek in me is eager to see the new Office, as, admit, the 2004 can do with an 'new look and feel' :)

Carter Burton Yoga Studio
What yoga does for the mind and soul, this thoughtfully-designed yoga studio does for its lucky green-minded inhabitants. Situated outside Washington DC in Clark County, Virginia, and designed by Carter + Burton Architecture, the small scale structure serves as a yoga studio and guest house for Annie and Paul Mahon's main house 100 feet away. Despite its compact 600 square foot footprint, the studio packs in the best of the best of green technologies, from SIP-based construction to geothermal, passive solar, locally-sourced materials, green roof, and LED lighting. The clients' and designers' commitment to sustainability earned the project a LEED Gold certification when it was completed in 2007.

With quotes like 'I posted it in your del.icio.us.', 'I am gonna check my Dashboard', 'Why didn't you look that up on google maps?', a personal! blog, a Flickr account and a LinkedIn, can she be considered as a geek or not?
And if not, what makes someone a geek?

What's up...headaches...
September turned out to be a hectic month. Hectic for my head...
First of all, a new school year starts and rather different than last year, where I got a lot of work at the end of the year with the launch of a band new site, followed by a well deserved 'vacation', this year 'vacation' got a different meaning.
This year we launched the KaskWeek site, which turned out to be a lot of work (especially gathering art-work of the students)
Instead of the well known 3 months, I only got one month, followed by the realization of a new sub-site of our mentors at school. (which turned out even harder than gathering work of students...)
In the meanwhile, normal work continues, and agenda items keep on coming in.
(Note to myself: Will have to 're-check' this job as it gets more work-intense and the wage doesn't change...)
Secondly, there is the bathroom project: Will or won't I change the bathroom in my own apartment. With all known aspects to consider: worth doing, checking costs, designing, checking prices, checking time schedules, finding plumbers, and other people to demolish the existing bathroom.
Outcome: C's design, and the fact that I could buy ALL things (bath, shower, tabs) for 850 euro helped me decided to say 'yes'.
So, I just bought everything today and well awae of the fact that now, I am obliged to go through.
(So people feeling aggressive or sportive at the end of October: feel free to contact me, we'll have some walls to break down.)
Thirdly: I suddenly happen to have an exhibit in November in Zebrastraat, showing pictures of Iraq and Israel/Palestine, in the neat company of Layla Aerts and others, and they asked me for an exhibit in Innsbruck, Austria.
Last: the phone didn't stop ringing this month. With me finally turning off the darn thing, creating some space in my head. Which turned out the best decision in weeks.
So I finally could start the real work: designing websites and taking pics, for my living :)
Yep, sometimes I am just not stress resistant as I presumed I was...

Design of 'Museum van het Belgisch trekpaard'
Very often, friends and family turn to you when it comes to designing a website. (Like they also call when there is a wedding...)
Nothing different with this project: no budget and a cousin smiling friendly asking if I could 'design' a page or two.
Seeing the budget not worth spending a lot of work, yet not willing to compromise in quality, I dare to look for cheaper solutions.
How?: I used a free template available online instead of starting from scratch spending hours to get the css right, and I adapted it a bit to fit the style I had in mind.
A short while later I had the website ready.
Surely, it looks a lot less 'personal' than designing the thing yourself, yet sometimes these things just fit the needs of what one is looking for.
(Admitted: In the end you also spend some hours on the thing, but that's the extra free time I am willing to spend for family and friends.)

Lijntje and Mufti
Mufti, a parody on Musti, gets no legal action.
According to the juridic advisor, there is no need to react.
Turning 'Nijntje' (Miffy) into 'Lijntje' (Sniffy), an action by Belgian Magazine Deng, did turn out to be controversial, as Dick Bruna got the magazine to court and a judge decided that the magazine had to be taken out of the shops. (pdf with more info)
Is there a difference in these two cases?
The big difference probably is: Dick Bruna is very protective about his Miffy, while ER Productions-Paradiso doesn't want to (over)react.
Yet, what is a mufti?
In wikipedia we read:
"A mufti (مفتي) is an Islamic scholar who is an interpreter or expounder of Islamic law (Sharia). A muftiat or diyanet is a council of muftis. These individuals and councils are capable of issuing fataawa (plural of "fatwa")."
So just to set things straight: a mufti is *not* a suicidebomber. (like the drawing might insinuate)
A suidice bomber is reffered to as a shahid/shaheed, while technically speaking, shahid means 'martyr'/'witness' and thus one becomes a shahid after death only.
Shaheed (Arabic: شَهيد šahīd, plural: شُهَداء šuhadā) is a religious term in Islam, that literally means "witness". It is a title that is given to a Muslim after his death, if he died during the fulfillment of a religious commandment, or during a war for the religion. In addition to its religious connotation, the term is also commonly used in the Indian subcontinent by Hindus and Sikhs as the equivalent of martyr. Arab Christians use the term to describe persons killed on duty or during wars. In this case, the term equals the term martyr.
The shaheed is considered as one whose place in Paradise is promised, according to the verse in the Qur'an "Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord." ("Aal-e-Imran" sura, verse 169).
A martyrdom operation is a military or an offensive attack in which the attacker is expected to die; most often a suicide bombing. The term is used by armed Muslim militants, or other similar or related groups. Islamist militants use this term as they do not see their attacks as an act of suicide, which is prohibited by Islam. While most combat involves a chance of death, a "martyrdom operation" implies a deliberate act of self-sacrificial suicide. The term is a neologism.
In Arabic, suicide bombings or martyrdom operations are called Shuada or Is-shtahad, both coming from the root Shaadi ("Testimony") that refers to the act of declaring one's belief in Islam. The suicide bombers are called "Shahids" and after their death attain the rank of a Martyr. (
It took me a while to figure it out, but I learned in Palestine that every citizen who got killed by the Israeli forces is regarded as a shahid/martyr (even if it is not a suicide bomber or a militant) because he/she died because of the 'war for the religion'.
Yet one can wonder if the struggle of the Palestinians is one of religion...
For each martyr, a poster gets printed (funnily enough in Bethlehem this also happened for the Christians, technically speaking no martyrs as they have a different belief), and the posters get spreaded in the city.

Sneak preview of the bathroom design
Ha, pretty proud of what she designed for me.
The first sneak preview of my new bathroom.
Everything is ordered, fingers crossed the rest will follow as smooth...
The project is rather interesting*:
The priorities: low budget, a modern feel, and some attention for the rental status of the apartment. Especially the first and last one of those clearly limits options.
The technical limitations: non movable technical space, no possibility to change the toilet location.
A true not so little challenge.
* Here you can see how it is right now. Pics will follow.

They're looking for artists...
„Syndrome“ is an exhibition-project by young artists from various European countries, who work on current cultural environments and their influences on the collective consciousness of communities. The exhibition will show a wide range of approaches to this field, ranging from installations, performances, theatre, photographie and video to studies in architecture and urbanism. The project itself is to be understood as a reaction to processes which have been termed as modern: the rise of migrations and hybrid and highly unstable environments. Syndrome is thus also intended as a laboratory of present cultural processes. The artists participating in Syndrome refer to to the experiences of fragmentation and crisis of the individual in communities which have been constructed along the breaking up of societal legitamized structures, codes and symbols i.e. the experience of everyday life. The exhibition will show the different stops of the laboratory and visitors will walk through the syndromes of various modern lifes.

Thank you
To the guy that noticed my flattening tire on the high way and made sure I stopped. (Yep indeed you don't feel this at first, especially not when it is raining and you tend to think it is because of the different road conditions.)
To the guys who helped to add air and pin point me to the nearest motor shop.
To the shop owner who was accidently at his (closed) shop and who was so kind to fix the tyre (for a mere 20 euro instead of an expensive road assistance)
Thanks a million. Really.
A bit scary afterwards when you start to think of what could have happened.
But then again: it didn't.
So I jumped back on the bike and drove home (into loving arms ;) ).

Signal: turn your iPhone into an iTunes remote
Signal is a cool little app that won't void your warranty and lets you control your iTunes library right from the screen of your iPod touch or iPhone.
Signal installs on your Mac, and starts up a little server that is accessible via the browser on your iPhone/iPod touch (or other device with a browser and internet access). Go to your special Signal URL and suddenly you have an iTunes remote control in your hands.
It is important to note that this doesn't stream your iTunes music to a remote device, it simply allows you to control iTunes (start, stop, and skip songs) from afar.
Signal costs $24.95, though a demo is available.

The Hulger Indian Call Centre
Did you know this?:
Off-shore agents, 'call centre executives' (as they are known locally), have undergone a program of 'culture sensitisation' and have been trained to recognise and understand British regional dialect. They have also been pre-programmed with all the right cultural references (yesterday's crappy weather, the weekend's football scores, etc.) so can chat easily and realistically with you.
Already people think 'Indian' when they hear of 'call centres'. Bangalore has become a global by-word for technological sweatshops.
As working hours are mapped to UK time, dealing with callers runs long into the night, with weary operators having to deal with 'irate customers' whilst their partners at home have long since gone to bed. The pressure and awkward hours effect relationships profoundly and India is feeling it.
But despite the mind-numbing repetitive work, the profession is relatively very well paid, with operators often being chauffeured to and from work. It is estimated that 5.4% of India's GDP is attributable to IT business outsourcing so it's not insignificant. With outsourcing so successful, and with a management and operational infrastructure in place, India is now also enjoying a bigger piece of the pie with companies like Microsoft, Intel, Motorola, Philips, etc. operating significant innovation and R&D centres in the country.

Table Chair
Sometimes you need an extra chair and sometimes you need a table. These modern chairs can be either or depending on your needs. By simply pushing the two chairs together they transform into a table. Each chair has a notch to slide in one another. Now unused seating has some other place to go. When you've got visitors and need an extra chair or two you simply pull them apart. Tada, you got two chairs! This needs to show up at IKEA stat!
