Consequences of iPod Touch for mobile browsing
I agree with many that there are enough iPods already.
(Crazy enough iPod turns out a very good name as it reaches beyond 'music' only)
The new iPod seems pretty advanced with its wifi connection.
It isn't the first and certainly won't be the last.
But what does it mean towards the future?
My 2cents:
First of all I think they'll try to hack it just like they did with the iPhone. Which is a good thing.
Because the device can much more than just being an MP3player. It actually has Mac Os X built in...
Will future use like this be possible? I do think so.
But what will be the most relevant development?
We already saw many sites produce special interfaces for the iPhone. (Mediatemple, Facebook, and many others)
Chris Montoya wrote about the sad state of the mobile web, and indeed, it is a rather strange development that 'a web company has developed a website that is intended for 1 browser (Safari mobile) on 1 hardware device (iPhone). If you really think about it, this is worse than the IE4 vs. NN4 days of last decade… then it was a matter of being software-dependent. Now we have websites that are both software- and hardware-dependent'.
Yet, the new iPod will make sure we'll optimize our CSS design for mobile apps to as it truly seems mobile browsing on a small device can/will become mainstream now.
