California Chair

Made by Belgian Pieter Maes, California Chair is looking for a solution on how to make a cheap chair.

Generique4-Filtered

The idea started with wanting to make a low-cost easy chair. Using skateboards for the majority of the structure, the price could be reduced significantly. The objective was making them unrecognisable so the chair didn’t have a street connotation. Therefore they’re padded and upholstered in Kvadrat to result in a luxurious and tactile seat.

Successful design I'd say :)

Nailing For Dummies

I'm not such a dummy when it comes to nailing (after one year of carpentry for my father that is). However I certainly hit several times my finger instead of the nail.

This is why I like this comcept:
You insert the nail inside the guide tube. Position the tube where you want the nail to be. The large top makes it much easier to manage a hammer slamming down on it. It also protects your precious and very useful fingers. Once the nail is pushed in, simply repeat the process. Your nail will always go in straight and square into its intended target.

Brilliant...

I love Belgians!

240250903 0Bc620C5B9I already mentioned 'Save Solidarity' which is a petition, and already received almost 50000 signatures.

I love Belgians isn't a petition, it's just a site where you can post a funny pic or a message.
For Walloons and 'Flandriens' who still love Belgium.

So why don't we start wearing black, yellow, or red? And form random Belgian flags in the streets? :)
(Oh, and picture it off course, on your blog...)

Stacking Chairs Into Shelves

The idea behind stacking chairs was a good one. They can neatly be stored away when not in use but the problem is they still take up space. This particular design by Jun Murakoshi creates another usable function by turning stacked chairs into shelving. The idea in this duality is if you're going to take up space, might as well be useful and functional.

Kask Newsletter

Ok, since last year we have been busy with it, and still haven't found a solid solution: our newsletter.

We foudn ourselves an easy to go communication module in ExpressionEngine, but while testing our first newsletter, we found out webmail.hogent.be was the first to reject our html mail. Mjammie... After loads of testing nothing to do but send out a plain text email (which probably no one reads)
Our html solution for our other subscribed readers turned out a success, yet, some of them mailed that they couldn't read it either.
The trouble wasn't our coding, but it is just a plain fact that there is not such a standard for email programs.

Css in email isn't widely supported, yet the other solutions aren't that successful either...
That's why campaignmonitor has made a call for an email standard, which hopefully gets some response

They summed up why it is so difficult to make an html newsletter today:

Today there are at least 10 popular email clients out there, each offering different levels of standards support ranging from perfect to virtually non-existent. I often hear comparisons between the current state of standards in email and the web circa 2000.

Because of this huge variation in standards support, email designers have been forced into a corner.

Another big differentiator is the fact that there were 2 or 3 browsers to consider back then and we knew exactly which web browsers were popular, making it much easier to know where to focus our energies. There is almost no data like this for the email world. Are more of my subscribers using Thunderbird or Apple Mail? It's almost impossible to know. So, we've got 3 to 4 times more variations to cater for and we don't even know which ones we should be targeting.

What we're now left with is building for the common denominator. This means bandwidth hogging, image heavy emails with nested tables and font tags. Yes, I said font tags. I see hundreds of these designs being sent every day purely because it's the only way to achieve consistent rendering across the board. Type in the URL of those creating these designs however and you'll often find a beautifully coded standards compliant site. Email design truly is stuck in the dark ages.

So how do you send your html newsletter?
You use something like Campaignmonitor, who (thankfully) has support for all email programs.
And if you (or your school for that matter ;) ) haven't got the resources for paying the Campaignmonitors of this world, what's your solution?

Prefab: Drop House

Drophouse11

The Drop House landed on the prefab scene after winning the Modular Architecture Challenge in 2005 with its gorgeous aesthetic and easily-customizable system. A partial prototype was installed at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris at the time, and now, the stunning structure has been brought to life in full form. Architects Antoine Cordier, Olivier Charles and Armel Neouze created the Drop House concept to exemplify private housing, industry and customization. The design is turning heads for its potential to minimize waste, reduce energy and settle in style with the option to move on a whim.

In the mailbox: Another Open House Day

Picture 2-18

"Beste,

Hah, architecture and eco. Just love it.
Perfect for the builders amongst you.
(We just have no house to build at this moment ;) )

PS: when browsing the list I spotted a nice house in Kuurne (8520), and one in Heusden - Destelbergen (9070), but you'll have to hurry up, as all 'nicely designed' houses are definitely favored.
PPS: Good to know: The Ecohouse in Antwerp houses a permanent exhibition and info on ecological building.

Surya Vanka.

Microsoft called to invite me for a dinner with Surya Vanka in Le Mess in Elsene, Brussels.
Surya is user experience expert and would reveal a bit on the design secrets of Microsoft.
The Zune, the wonderful Surface Table.. UI always leaves me with wonderful fascination, and it certainly so Surya might

Somehow I turned on the other side of the table due to my late arrival (Heck, finding the spot wasn't that easy I thought it'd be...)
I got great company though, and amused myself chitchatting.
And suddenly great food was served, and the clock pointed 10.30 PM... And I had to run to catch the last train.
Time went so fast, I didn't even met Surya.
Luckily Geert will send me a great PPT, and luckily there is internet and mail to ask those questions I always wanted to know.

I did meet Danny and got introduced to Petra and Caroline and wil certainly see them again next week. (Well, the girls, not Danny ;) )
And there was Pietel, who saved me from the whole train trip to Ghent, and just dropped me. He's such a cutie :)

Dinner.

Hidden Assets. The Shelflife series from Viable London began with Charles Trevelyan's bookshelf and/or room divider that hides a chair and footstool in the structure of the shelves, ready to pull out when needed. The Shelflife desk hides a desk and chair for those without dedicated space for a desk...

Deezer

Picture 2-19Deezer is the first juke box on demand totally free in the world!

Our concept is simple:
-Give consumers a full and free access to all their favourite songs
-Pay artists and their producers through a revenue share based on our advertising revenues
-Help discovering new artists through a wide audience

THE revelation of this weekend.
Since I have been in bed due to a strange kind of flue (or something alike...) it has been a welcome distraction.
And when the girl reads this post (trust me she'll read it faster than I can tell...) she'll be delighted.
Not being able to play the songs she likes was something bothering her on Last.FM.
I, on my side, miss the 'guiding aspect' a bit on Deezer.
But then again, it enabled me to listen to Amy Winehouse's older songs.

Found on Smetty's blog, who got it from Commisaresse, who got it from someone else...

Oh, can someone upload that Sarah Bettens cd, since I forgot to buy De Morgen yesterday... Tx :)

Thoughts of the day: Plastic you pay for

Picture 3-22

It was something bothering me a lot when living in Israel: in each store, at each place they want to give you a bag. When going to the market, you ended up with at least 4 bags in different colors...
I guess we are not doing so bad over here when it comes to recycling (yep, we have to hand in our garbage in different bags: real garbage, glass, plastic, paper are all separately collected)

In Belgium, recently all supermarkets started to charge for their plastic bags.

In return they offer (more expensive, yet) durable bags to use several times.
The shopping bag of our grandma in a new look...
I think the supermarkets are pretty happy with this measurement: no longer tons of money they have to pay for, heck they even get paid for it.
And I still wonder why it took so long. Because the consumer doesn't mind. Everybody now just takes a reusable shopping bag along.

And you?

Thoughts of the day: How would a museum show today's left overs?

248 Picture 8
This is what a museum might look like in the 61th century...

You might think twice when buying those Pampers...
Think about how your great great great grandchildren will wonder how we ever dared to make diapers in plastic.

Eco friendly diapers do exist by now, but are they a good alternative.
Back to cloth that is?

News of the night:

-In a new posting to Apple.com's Hot News webpage, chief executive Steve Jobs has confirmed plans to release a software developer's kit (SDK) for iPhone by February that will allow developers to write native applications for the touch-screen.
-Apple and its wireless partner in France, Orange, will sell an unlocked version of the iPhone.

Like last year I got invited to speak at De Ham, Mechelen. The lecture was at 8.30 AM! And I certainly wasn't the only one thinking this was 'early' :)

Like last year, a workshop was added to the lecture, making sure nobody doze off...

How life is when you're twenty-something and at school ;)

Here are the downloads of the lecture, talking about the evolution of 'media' and it's change with internet.
And also a practical guide on 'how to make people find you online when looking for a job'
Hope you enjoy.

Tetris Apartments by Ofis Arhitekti

Cool design. A pity I didn't find any pics of the interior...
_mg_0353.jpg

Slovenian architects Ofis have completed Tetris Apartments, a social housing development in Ljubljana.

_mg_0371_.jpg

Here's a little bit of text from the architects:

"The building stands on the edge of the 650 apartments development which was finished year ago. By urban rules the block is 3 floors high and 65 meters long. Since the orientation of the apartments is towards the car road the apartment areas together with balconies are orientated to the quieter south side."

Samsonite Black Label

Picture 2-22

Samsonite launched a black label featuring beautiful stuff.

I saw their Signat collection somewhere in an airport and immediately couldn't keep my eyes of the precious cases...

Inspired by the sleek, retro style of the original Samsonite Signat attaché, today’s Signat features pop-art prints and bold color, creating the ultimate “must have” fashion accessory. Mod interiors scream of fashion, femininity and fun. A true celebration of the avant-garde.

A Fashion “Must Have” Samsonite Black Label has taken the iconic symbol of the 1960s executive – the Samsonite Signat Attaché - and transformed it into a modern day ‘must have’ fashion accessory for the jet setter. The new look of Signat is inspired by the sleek, retro style of the early attaché. The new Signat offers a sophisticated style and sleek design, while still maintaining the functionality of its predecessor.

We like :)

If I would like to work in a company again instead of being independent (well, actually, I am looking for a one-day-job-a-week-opportunity) I certainly would want to work for Fisheye.
They're like everything I would want to be involved with: interactive installations, video, podcasting, construction of stands, vj-ing at parties, office design..
Well, the only thing they don't do is web-design :)

They're looking for a motion graphic artist/specialist.
(with a profound knowledge of After Effects) You can contact them at info[at]fisheye.be or on: 09/227 24 52

Wesc

Picture 1-26
We found Wesc when shopping in Brussels: a cool set of headphones...

But when googling I found this cool site, with a lot more than headphones. Guess that makes me hold off that buy (Never buy audio from clothing brands.)

WeSC is a street fashion brand for intellectual slackers. WeAretheSuperlativeConspiracy symbolizes what WeSC as a company represents; a group, a family of good and competent people working towards the same ideal and goals.
WeSC is not merely a brand in the fashion industry, but rather a company within the skateboard culture. We create “street fashion”, clothing with roots in a subculture that sets its own rules and follows its own trends.
The company was founded on January 7th 2000, our official “Day of The Superlative Conspiracy”. The founders are all avid skateboarders and snowboarders.

WeSC is addressing people with awareness, regardless of race, religion or financial background. These people all share the values and lifestyle of the WeSC founders. We deliver “life after skate”, a more developed style that also targets people outside the skateboard community, but still shares its values. The particular “We-feeling” and community feeling in the skateboard culture is an ever present important key element in day to day operations of the company.

We are the superlative conspiracy.

Accounting, Belgium and Mac

I think I talked about this several times before.
But finding a good invoicing program for Mac that respects Belgian law is very difficult.
As in: your accountant needs to have to support it too of course...

My accountant told me to use Pro Acc.
Their site talked about a Mac version, and thanks to the Unizo Membership, it got a personal license very cheap.
The solution you think.
Well.. The Mac version was still Mac Os 9!
So, I got the PC version installed on Vista. But then I suddenly needed an upgrade.

Somehow it changed from free to 250 euro because of that.
Grumbl...

When suddenly I got a mail from Exact talking about Online invoicing, I got a bit ecstatic. Maybe this could be the solution...
Online everywhere and anywhere.
And invoices by email ( I never managed to get the PDF function of Pro Acc to work...)
So I went to the workshop today.
Guess what: online invoicing only works on IE 6.0...
Back to basics...

Luckily I found out that Pro Acc has an Mac Os X version released next month.
Will that be the end of my annoyance?

Anyone else working on Mac and having a good solution?
(And yes, I know a total switch to Vista would solve the deal... But no plans for that yet ;) )

Note: Look, futile hours after sending them a mail, I am admitted as one of their beta-testers for Mac. I'll keep you updated on the user-friendliness of the system. Seems that, since Pro Acc got acquired by Exact, a lot has changed...

Good newsletters are fun to read

Bizzbymail NlI got myself subscribed to a newsletter 'Bizz by Mail'

And it's great.
It's actually fun to receive it each morning and reading the crisp short messages.

ming (bedrijfsstrategie, rekrutering,...) of in uw leven (promotie afdwingen, vermageren,...).

Nice example of what a good newsletter should be :)

Kask: updates

Header Newsletter

So what's up you ask.

Blogging has been a side activity lately.
I have a bunch of things in my to-do list, which is by now like never ending...

I finally managed to get our podcasting working at KASK.
How difficult could that be you ask? Well, it ain't easy to configure a CMS to give you the output you long for.
Not to speak about the dazzling technology of podcasting and rss.

But hey, after some testing, and a lot of helpdesk at ExpressionEngine, I managed to get it working.
You can see the result here. And an rss feed of course!
(The feed is tested and working in Bloglines, GoogleReader, Netvibes, Newsgator, Newsfire and Safari.
It seems to have some trouble with NetNewsWire Lite, Firefox, and it is certainly not working with iTunes yet!
Feel free to add if it is working in your feedreader. Or not.)

Next to that I managed to get the newsletter working at out webmail-system.
An online version of the latest newsletter can be found here.

No big deal, I know, but some amongst you know how difficult this seemingly utterly stupid things can be.
And how time-consuming.

So I am pretty proud of these achievements. Especially when you know we're just 2 webdesigners managing the site, both 'quarter'-time.

Remote-controlled rubber duck

Remote-controlled rubber duck

The humble rubber duck that has kept children occupied and entertained in their respective bathtubs throughout the ages will see a technological improvement in the form of a remote-controlled rubber duck. It will come in the traditional yellow design, but is powered by half a dozen AA batteries instead (2 for the controller and 4 for the duck charger). A 5 minute charge will result in 15 minutes of pure fun - provided your fingers and toes don't shrivel up like prunes first. Needless to say, both the duck and controller are waterproof so no risk of running a minor electrical shock there.

Prada, Armani or iPhone? A comparison.

L 0002860642312 F657Af3EIphone-2

They all look compelling beautiful, they all have a touch screen, and admitted, the Prada looks best.
But the geek in me wants to hear the features. And then, the iPhone just plain rules...
Yes, the reason to compare these is based upon style, tactile input and features.
(If it would have been for features only I would have added the N95 too.)

The comparison: (Prada, Armani, iPhone, in that order)
Basic phone: yes, yes, yes
Radio: yes, yes, no
MP3: yes(aac, acc, mp3, wma), yes(aac, eaac, mp3), yes (aac, mp3)
Video: 3gp+mpeg4, mpeg4, 3gp+mpeg4
Videorec: yes, yes, yes
Camera: 2megapix (1600*1200), 3,15megapix (2048*1536), 2megapix (1600*1200)
Zoom: 2*, 6*, no
Flash: yes, no, no
Basic Memory: 8mb, 50mb, 8gb
Expandable memory: yes, yes, no (micro SD for those who feature it, up to 2 gb)
Usb 2.0: yes, yes, yes
Screen: 240*400, 240*320 ,480*320
Bluetooth: yes, yes, yes
GPRS: yes, yes, yes
3G: no, no, no
Edge: yes, yes, yes
Wifi: no, yes, yes
Internet: no, yes, yes
Email: yes, yes, yes
Organizer: doc viewer , doc viewer, loads of extra programs
Videocall: no, no, no
Extra: voice memo+leather bag+earphones, built-in hands free, googlemaps+built-in hands free+voice memo
Size: normal, small, large

One of the extra features of the iphone certainly is the large screen, and the fact that it runs an os, which is probably not the case with the others. So upgrading the software is much easier.
When you love pictures more than the mp3player and internetconnectivity + browsing, then you need to go for the Armani Samsung. It is also a lot smaller than the rest.
For those in favor of a 'simple' phone with style: go for the Prada LG.
All other geeks will prefer the iPhone.

Tech specs Armani

Freebies on this site

Workshop-1

Brusselsgeek2-Thumb

A while ago I developed an open-source WP Theme.

The item got lost into the blog though.
I made several presentations, and they also got lost.
In a former version of this blog I had an extra page for all those open source freebies.
So I decided to add again a section to this site to highlight this 'free' stuff
You can find a new tab in the menu above.

All these things are released under creative commons, so they are free to use.
Please don't 'steal', you are free to use these, but a referral to me or this site is appreciated.

Oh, don't forget to check it once in a while, as it will get updates.
I am checking to find older stuff that got lost ;) and newer stuff that's being prepared.

Upgrading? No not really.

Leopardavailable 20071026

One thing I learned during the last years is 'never buy a first release computer'.

(Unfortunately I own one now, due to assertiveness or the lack of it at my school...)

And the second one is 'never upgrade to a new system, unless after few months, when all bugs and bytes are resolved.

The advise on many forums is the same: If you have only one computer and it's your production machine, don't upgrade. The 10.5 upgrade is a big one--not a small update, not a few bug fixes. Lots of stuff gets broken and if you need to keep getting your work done, just wait. Let a few dot releases ease things out.

In the past, waiting with some upgrades and releases turned out the best choice in many cases.
I was truly happy not to have upgraded to iTunes 7.0, and happily waited to upgrade my Quicktime.
And if I would have had an iPhone, I certainly would have been happy not to have done that last upgrade ;)
Not to speak about several updates that turned people's macs into weird acting machines.
(That was actually when I decided to wait with upgrades: once my machine went totally mad because of a simple tiny upgrade)

Nope, I certainly am a ramp tourist. I like to hear about all the recent stuff, watch how things go wrong at other people's computers, and when all is fixed, finally get mine upgraded.

Peter, I would recommend you to carefully wait.
