Upgrading? No not really.

Leopardavailable 20071026

One thing I learned during the last years is 'never buy a first release computer'.

(Unfortunately I own one now, due to assertiveness or the lack of it at my school...)

And the second one is 'never upgrade to a new system, unless after few months, when all bugs and bytes are resolved.

The advise on many forums is the same: If you have only one computer and it's your production machine, don't upgrade. The 10.5 upgrade is a big one--not a small update, not a few bug fixes. Lots of stuff gets broken and if you need to keep getting your work done, just wait. Let a few dot releases ease things out.

In the past, waiting with some upgrades and releases turned out the best choice in many cases.
I was truly happy not to have upgraded to iTunes 7.0, and happily waited to upgrade my Quicktime.
And if I would have had an iPhone, I certainly would have been happy not to have done that last upgrade ;)
Not to speak about several updates that turned people's macs into weird acting machines.
(That was actually when I decided to wait with upgrades: once my machine went totally mad because of a simple tiny upgrade)

Nope, I certainly am a ramp tourist. I like to hear about all the recent stuff, watch how things go wrong at other people's computers, and when all is fixed, finally get mine upgraded.

Peter, I would recommend you to carefully wait.

Well, I did upgrade. It has a few features that made upgrade worth it for me, such as Spaces, UTF-8 support in Terminal, Time Machine, not crashing the whole Finder when a Network share gets lost etc. Just for those few things, I upgraded and can't miss them already!

I totally follow you on this. I usually wait for others to discover the bugs, and post them to their blogs, and let Google pick it all up, so I can easily google for known issues. The quick release of a first update for leopard is also a sign not everything was going right.

However, I must say that I have quite some faith in Apple, and will install Leopard this week, as it seems to have enough good reasons to switch over to Leopard. Lets just hope all goes well (and make a backup first).

I follow you aswell. I just switched to mac this summer and I don't feel like using an upgraded OS already.
I'll wait until I'm back in Belgium (March) to make a major Mac upgrade: Leopard, iWork '08 and a 23" Cinema Display.
And for an iPhone... it's just waiting until my current cell phone will break. And that can take a while. Those cheapest Nokia phones, they just won't break.

I upgraded last saturday and I'm still very happy I did. Leopard is fantastic.
The only thing that doesn't work any more, and it's bothering me just a little bit, is my AlchemyTV card. I contacted their tech support and they expect a patch to be ready around the end of november.
I expected this tv card to be broken, but watching tv is not so very important to me, so I upgraded anyway.

Btw, here is a list of applications that are not compatible yet with Leopard: http://guides.macrumors.com/List_of_Applications_Not_Compatible_with_Leopard

i too, wait for bugs to be fixed on first versions, before upgrading.
i don't feel like i need to be the first adopter in technology - i can wait for the second round or so..
