Dust all over

It gave me stress, it gave me nightmares, and loads of worries.
But thanks to the beautiful design, the cheap prices at X20 and my mom's and girlfriend's advise: 'it's really good investment', I went for it.
The bathroom renovation project...

It all started on Nov 1th.
And bringing down a wall felt just great!

Floor coverings

Kerliteplus-1I wish I would have known this earlier. It might have been a cheaper solution for my for floor for the bathroom...

KERLITE PLUS, the ceramic solution you were looking for to renovate that old flooring. With a minimum height increase – from 3 to 3.5mm – KERLITE PLUS has a tough fiberglass mesh backing, doubling its cladding potential. The sky’s the limit for this stunning, minimum weight tile. With Kerlite it’s easy to lay new flooring in your home. But more than that, it’s economic and simple. KERLITE PLUS can be installed directly over existing flooring in wood, ceramic or any other compact type of surface. This is because the underside of the ceramic slab has been reinforced with a dense fiberglass mat. As well as allowing excellent heat conduction, this minimum thickness mesh ensures the tile sticks solidly to the adhesive spread on the substrate. With just 3.5mm additional floor height there’s no need to adjust the level of doors and jambs.

The Personal Podcar

ULTra PRT, heathrow, transport, future, electric, vehicle, podcar, personal transportation, mass transit

The future is now...

Travelers to London are in for a green transportation treat when traveling from terminal to terminal. The ULTra PRT, by Advanced Transport Systems LTD, is a Personal Rapid Transit vehicle which has the potential to change the way that we travel within cities (and more specifically, airports in this case) around the world. The four-person vehicle itself is battery powered and centrally-controlled (no need for human drivers!), moving on its own elevated guided lane within the airport.

Table talks

Crazy grandmom

3733318266

Imagine your grandmom paragliding...
Now imagine her being age 100...
This one did it. Not to mention the other thing: she benji jumped at age 70.

A British pensioner marked her 100th birthday by setting what is believed to be a new world record on Wednesday after paragliding from the top of a mountain range in Cyprus.

Peggy McAlpine, who has seen the reign of five British monarchs and 26 prime ministers, leapt from a 760 metre peak in the Five Finger mountains in northern Cyprus for a 15-minute tandem flight.

The former accountant, who has two daughters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, said she felt no nerves at her birthday stunt.

"I had a wonderful time and I would love to do it again but I will give it a few years and let someone else have a go at beating the record," she told the crowd of around 30 friends, family and press who gathered to watch the bid.

"If no-one else wants a go, I'll do it again when I am 105," she told AFP.

City Planning

I have always been a fan of city planning and modernity.
Quite difficult when living in a medieval city which got a port activity that as resumed and got some factories later on, making sure we ended up with small worker houses.

Check out what they are planning in Ghent, near the docks.
Quite interesting to know when you are looking for a new house to buy/invest.

Key-Diagram 451X329X90

2. Canal Copy 2 2 451X329X90

Flanders in Belgium is distinguished by several magnificent historical inner cities of medieval origin and characterized by a wide spread ribbon (urban) development, which fills the space between the historical centers. This development has lead to a continuous sprawl. Today nearly all growth in Flanders is in the empty outskirts, making the city with its characterized mixed program and densities seem a superseded model.

In Gent, there is a unique possibility to go against this pattern of development and concentrate growth in a zone that will become part of the inner city when the ring road is extended. In a unique way, it is possible to compliment the historical center with a new part that answers to the modern needs of mass infrastructure and liveability.

Expanding the inner city seems the message.

A project by the city of Gent, executes by Rem Koolhaas

Behive got featured at the Guardian

Cool!

Brussels: Launched in February, Behive is an excellent online magazine featuring a range of tips across Belgium. Their skew is towards the art and design end of the spectrum, with the intention of announcing forthcoming events, generally a couple of weeks in advance — definitely one to check before a trip. A recent event that caught my eye was the "invasion" of the design-centric White Hotel by a collective of local designers.

Boopsie is a free downloadable thin client that sits between your mobile device and dozens of useful sites (or channels). It is compatible with Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Blackberry, the iPhone, and Symbian so as long as your phone is a little more advanced than a flip phone, you should be able to use it.
Once you have it loaded, it makes a data connection and from there you can choose any number of

Pecha Kucha, v1

C made a nice sum up of things that were superb lat night at Pecha Kucha Brussels.
With more than enough people to attend, the event turned out a success I think.

What's Pecha Kucha, you ask?
Clearly the reporter who called me during the day didn't do his research to well...
No, it isn't a 'how to learn how to present'-event.
Instead it is a daring challenge for the speaker to explain what he or she is busy with, in only 5 minutes, during 20 slides.
The subject? Could be anything.
From their site:

Pecha Kucha, a Japanese expression for the sound of conversation, is a series of “show and tell evenings” for designers, architects, artists, creatives, … started by Klein Dytham Architecture in Tokyo.
Since 2003, groups have sprung up in cities all over the world (over 80 so far) and adopted the Pecha Kucha format: each presenter has 20 slides which are displayed for 20 seconds each.

10 speakers instead of 15, who'd talk 20 seconds on 20 slides.
I liked it. For my favs, look at Soundscapes (though, after hearing Jan Kriekels for too many times, I'd leave him out of my list. Dunno why but I kind of think it is strange that when he talks about sustainability during his whole presentation, he always ends up with their 'Burning Man' project, where they burn almost half a rainforest...)

My remarks about the event?
I'd advise Nando to stick to the format of 10 people instead of 15. Longer is not necessary in my eyes: I got enough input for one night.
And the location was kind of hyped, yet not particularly perfect. I guess that had to do with the overwhelming response to the event.
(Similar to our 'find a parking spot' problem...)

Am I going to the second Pecha Kucha? Certainly!

Gift ideas (n1)

ZoomAs holidays are nearing I'll be adding some gift ideas for those in search for an original present.

(Not to mention most of this stuff is on my personal wishlist)

First on the list: Threadless.com with their numerous fancy T-shirts. At the low dollar rate and prices of 10$, pretty cheap presents to buy. Perfect for the littl' bro or nephew. With a few extra you can lighten up some other people too as occasional present.

Heerlijk Hoorspel (Gift Idea n2)

Picture 1-29Few days ago I got a mail asking me if I wanted to receive 'Heerlijk Hoorspel'
As somewhere mentioned in a disclaimer on this site, I don't mind people sending marketing stuff. As long as they respect my 'If I don't like it I'll neglect it' warning.
I have neglected some stuff in the past.

But not this one! Nono!
I received 'Wilde Zwanen' yesterday. I intended to put it away for my littl' bro's christmas.
That was until I decided to check it out first.
Imagine this: 4 people (roommates, my love and me) sitting in our living room at 12pm, listening to Hans Christian Andersen, told by Warre Borgmans.
First C. was making fun at me 'You're actually dancing to this' but minutes later, when I said I was going to buy this for a bunch of other kids and adults, she looked at me saying 'I want it too...'
It is sooooo crazy cool, I really am going to buy it for that whole bunch of people, it's the perfect christmas present.
Even for adults (with a kid's mind that is ;) )

Some details:
Warre Borgmans tells the story, Peter Van de Veire is a dead DJ, Gene Bervoets is a bishop, Frank Focketeyn a ghost, and here are many more.
It takes (unfortunately not more than) an hour and is split in 3 pieces, making it perfect for a bed time story, but also for a silent sunday afternoon (when combined with the online games)
It fits in the cd player of your car, shortening your drive to grandmom, and will not bother you to listen along.
Why? Because it's crazy cool, features some pipikaka sing-a-long-songs, and has some hidden 'you have to know' items that your children won't get but will make you smile.
At 20 euro it's a bargain: you receive a cd, a little booklet with the original story, and the adapted one, with beautiful graphics.

I am totally in love with it. (And almost running to the shop for the other one they released)

You can check out the website for some video and audio. (But at the time writing, something seems wrong with that.)

Metateeeeel

Whoehaa! My girl made in to the top 100! Coo-hool.
Yet, according to that same girl: How come I made it, and not, let's say Eskimokaka (influence: 16)? Or Dykes and The City (influence: 9)?
She's quite modest (did you read her already?), I totally get why she made it into this list.
Yet I still don't get the algorithm of Metatale.
I am indeed missing Eskimokaka not to talk about Veerle (influence: 13, yet the only one with PR8), Tales From The Crib (influence: 13), Druppels (influence: 16, 13), Smetty (influence: 14).

So ok, their top 100 changed, with Kerygma and me and a bunch of others appearing into the first 100. But where did these others go? I mean, Veerle is certainly an influencer. No doubt about that...
Or am I the only one questioning this?

Update: I am not against Metatale at all, I support their idea of conversation between blogger/influencer and marketeers.
But I am left with some questions. Maybe Veerle has too many conversations worldwide instead of local, but it doesn't explain why an Eskimokaka, or iBert isn't in the top 100. Linked all over, and linking a lot.
Actually when reading 'Dus, voor degenen die graag wat hints krijgen: veel linken (van en naar), veel reacties geven en krijgen, veel posten... dit helpt allemaal om MetaTale invloed bij te krijgen.' makes me wonder why Netlash itself is listed yet not scoring higher. If anyone has an online life, comments on posts right away, frequently updates its site, links and is being linked, Bart is certainly 'active' I'd say ;)
If I dare to compare this to myself: no comment blog nor commenting myself, a link list, yet not an active linker, and ok my posting frequency is higher I guess. I just don't understand it, is what I mean...

Gift Idea (n4): Perfect Christmas present: Buy some carbon

Picture 2-23
This is your situation: you need to buy a present for some family/friend/cousin/nephew/mum/grandmom/blogger/whatever and he/she has everything. We mean 'EVERYTHING'.

Sure you recognize this situation... Heck, you have EVERYTHING yourself (except that fancy iPhone nobody is going to buy you for your christmas anyway...)

Your problem: you don't know what to buy.
Your solution: 1) spend hours and hours for the perfect gift and be afraid of ending up with something he/she already has, or wasn't exactly the thing he/she wanted 2) buy a piece of junk that will make them unhappy anyway, 3) buy a lousy voucher that will make you look like 'I didn't know what to buy so I bought this lousy voucher'-loser. (voucher are so nineties...)

I have a real solution for you:

Buy some rainforest!
Advantages:
-It's ecological
-It's original
-It's tax-deductible ;)
-Always good: Your WWF cousin, your gay neighbors, or your nearly married friends, they'll all love it. (except your grand mom who doesn't understand it) (Imagine: you'll be giving some people their first piece of land ever)
-It's worth the 50 euro/piece as you'll be saving 300 species of beautiful (or ugly) bugs and flowers. And most of all, so you'll be saving some oxygen for later. (Yes, it's also a present for yourself.)

The coolest (geekiest) part of it? You can check your/his/her piece of land on Google Earth

(Tx to C for bringing this up)

Euro vs euri

What's up with this euri thing?
Bruno already wrote it back in January. But apparently more and more are using the wrong plural.
You can read it at Pietel, Kerygma, Tales from the crib, beau, and many more.
As long as I remember the Dutch plural of euro is 'euro's'
Euri doesn't exist. At all..
So, is there an unknown collaborative effort of bloggers trying to re-create language? Or are they just trying to be tragically hip ;P

Liege Airport

Walloon is doing well in airport business it seems...
An airport in Charleroi (pretty know due to Ryanair), but Liege also has a pretty beautiful airport.
While checking if they offer cheap flights too, I came across this page:

Picture 6-5

Can't help, but I always see the head on that persons body.
My questions:
-Do you see the same guy?
-Is this on purpose you'd think?
-Would the PS be involved in this airport?

Tetron - Modular Storage Shelf

The tetron shelf is a modular storage unit that can be shipped flat and easily assembled without tools. As a versatile solution to media management tetron can accommodate dvds, cds and other small items. When mounted to a wall the unit can function alone or in a number of graphic configurations. The shelf may also be used independently of a wall while still retaining its practicality.

Pimp my Billy

In need of some furniture, but you're not willing to spend too much money.
Ikea always has been the perfect spot, except for: everyone has it.
Pimping Ikea furniture is a big hype now, and you can check IkeaHacker for that.
For those not willing to DIY, some designers have ready made pimps.

BillyWilder.jpg

Three young designers from Germany, taking issue with Ikea's rather bland Billy shelving units, reinvented the furniture in a series of designs that repurpose the unit. Called Pimp my Billy, the collection of design interventions cheers up a cheap bookcase to no end!

Billy Wilder takes the form of green branch growing across the Billy Bookshelf (above right). Billy Heidenreich is a shelf with a lectern attached for displaying your most beautiful photography books (below left), while the Stütze functions as an extra leg to tilt the bookcase at an angle so there's no need for book ends (below right). All the designs are beautifully made and will probably last longer than your Ikea shelving unit.

BillyHeidenreich.jpg Stutze.jpg

Carsten Schelling, Ralf Webermann and Sven Rudolph, all graduates of FH Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, make up the design collective that is Ding 3000. Check out the rest of their sleek, but entertaining furniture and product design on their site.

Gift Idea n5: Mobiles

Anyone who wants to bring me an iPhone from the States is welcomed...
Meanwhile I can advise you these:

A phone at 25 euro... Perfect for the kids or grand-parents. And actually it is pretty 'cool' as it has only basic functions. It doesn't waste battery like the others.

Or the prada... Just plain beauty...

MadGirlNancy, giftidea n6

Picture 4-14

A truly charming story of the people behind MadGirlNancy:

We travelled the world, came back after some months and then decided this wasn't the life we wanted to lead.
So we took our chances, sold everything and went back to Thailand to make our own collection of bags.
Meanwhile we present collection 2.
We achieved our dream: half a year in Belgium and half a year in Thailand.

Their story makes me smile and convinces me to go for my dreams.
Meanwhile I also like their bags, key rings, tees and many more.
A pity their collection pics are rather small online...

Perfect holiday gift though. So go and check it out ;)

Apple presents: One day discount event, (giftidea n7)

As mentioned before, I wouldn't mind anyone giving me an Apple iPhone.
The thing isn't available in Belgium, yet, it shouldn't stop you from checking the Apple shop today, as it is 'shopping day' today with great discounts.
I shopped last year and bought myself an Airport Express at 89 euro instead of 119.
So it is really worth checking out, iPods don't drop so much in price, but all other accessories are worth considering buying it today.
JBL On Time Speakers at 144 instead of 229 for example.

one laptop per child: gift idea n7

Logo V2
This one is a rather expensive gift, yet, again, a bunch of others are profiting from your present.

Give a laptop and get one (you can give to your littl' one)
Unfortunately only in the US, but as you all get these wonderful iPhones in the country, I am sure you can get one of these too...

From now through December 31, 2007, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. This is the first time the revolutionary XO laptop has been made available to the general public. For a donation of $399, one XO laptop will be sent to empower a child in a developing nation and one will be sent to the child in your life in recognition of your contribution. $200 of your donation is tax-deductible (your $399 donation minus the fair market value of the XO laptop you will be receiving).

All info on Laptopgiving.org
