The Design Globe

globe.png

For people looking for a perfect gift for me, this one will do: A design globe to make me dream :)

The aim was to create a lifestyle mood light with the character of a globe. The result is a neutral design which compliments every interior whether hanging by an acrylic thread from the lounge ceiling or sitting on the acrylic ring in the office. When suspended the globe is optically freed as an object and appears to float in space. Pressing the dimmer switch illuminates the globe and the political information which is printed on the inside. Borders, country names and city names glow from within the globe. The neutral colours of the globe allow for the creation of many lighting moods through the installation of different coloured bulbs.

Club Med Testing for you :)

alpencm.png

The very nice people of Club Med contacted me a while ago, wondering if I'd be interested testing their facilities and writing my experiences down.

A free midweek in Chamonix. Who'd say no to such an offer?
Not me!

So on Sunday I leave for few days to go and check their hotel, their spa, and I certainly hope to enjoy some skiing around.
I'll posting my pics and experiences on this site.

Yesterday I received the program, and I have to say: 'Mjammie'.
Each Club Med Village has its own 'specialties' and Chamonix, features, except for its magnificent view on the Mont Blanc, a spa, sauna, beauty center for 'new energy', good food and a very charming hotel. And snow, of course.

'New Energy', let that be what I need right now, so I am definitely looking forward to the Balinese massage we receive upon arrival.

(*Disclaimer: Yes, Club Med is paying this press trip for me. -And a bunch of other journalists.-)

Pics of the massage are coming

As you might have noticed: no pics of the massage yet. Some things in the program are a bit changed, so we're getting a massage tonight... Bet Pietel will be checking the banner at around 5PM ;)

Yes, the mojito's were well prepared, so trying to snowboard, the first time in life might be a rather 'falling' experience.

Check me out I'd say ;)

Ok, gotta go, find me a helmet for safety...

Club Med Part 1...

2396670500_043540ecc7.jpg

So we arrived here yesterday. Got a nice walk around, and admitted, the smell of salt and beauty care immediately made me long for the real thing.

That real thing got delayed a bit, due to our delay at the airport.
By now, I don't regret, as, after my first day of snowboarding, I feel like, hell, like what? I feel every muscle in my body, that is...

Why? Because after a morning with Yin, our cameraman, who gave up his classes decided to picture the beautiful Mont Blanc in the afternoon, I ended up with a private teacher showing me all corners of the baby and junior 'piste'
And how did I see all those corners: if it wasn't my but who fell on them, it was my nose, or one of my knees.
I have to admit: it worked: snowboarding gets learned by falling, and by now, I already surfed a tiny part of the mountain, even taking turns.
(I know some of you laughing now, but let me tell you: taking turns is hard. Really hard.)

So here I am, glad to have discovered the junior snowboarder in me.

But please excuse me, as I need to run to my private massage lady, to bend my body back into the right position :)

My 2cents: coming to ski out of the season is just great: you probably pay less, and get more, as the teachers are having classes with 6 tot 10 people, and sometimes even 1 or 2. Making it well worth spend money.
All classes also have the advantage of using the elevator faster than normally, skipping long waiting hours.

And while my night sleep wasn't perfect due to missing my girl and a heavy wind, this morning we discovered everything was covered with a nice amount of fresh snow, while the sun peeped out, promising us a perfect day?

Heaven is in her hands

I know this title might get me in trouble with the girlfriend. (As does the rest of this entry..*)
But I just received the best massage ever..

2395761487_97850e6034.jpg

Imagine this:

You get into a room, have a color sphered haman, and afterwards you're brought into a massage room.
There, a beautiful girl explains she'll be giving you a scrub and a Balinese massage.
You don't have a clue what that might be, except for few words you found on the web, not revealing much.
You like massages.

She tells you to lie down, head downwards, on a soft, heated massage table.
She covers you with a towel, and starts with your left side.
Soft hands slowly scrub your legs, feet, side, neck, shoulders, over and over.
And after a while, she starts your other side.
You think your halfway, and you already regret I wouldn't last longer.
When she slowly covers you right side, you sigh, thinking it is over.
And then suddenly she uncovers your back.
Heaven already starts at that very moment, when you discover you have 4 backs: a left, a right, an upper, and a bottom.
She continues her massage, and you, your face still down, suddenly wonder what happens when she climbs on the back of the table, making sure your legs are being stretched rightfully.
That must have been it, you think, not being able to imagine more.
At that very moment she tells you to turn on your back.
That's the ultimate heaven, you think in the second: this massage didn't end, it's just halfway, as you suddenly realise you have 4 fronts: a left, a right, an upper, and a bottom.

For the next 45 minutes, she'll doing it all over again:
Your legs, your feet, your belly, your sides, your arms, your shoulders, your neck, your head, and finally your hands.

In the end you're babysoft, and in perfect equilibrum.
And heaven... It's somewhere way below you, as you float towards your room...

(*Not sure if it will have to do with the girl or the massage, or both.. :) )

The good and the bad...

Of course there is another side of the coin: Club Med comes at a price.

But let that be exactly what they aimed for.
After doing some evaluations of the all-in market Club Med decided to go for the more exclusive, more expensive upper market. Getting rid of their 1 and 2 'trident', they uplifted their existing facilities, closed some, and created new ones, including their yacht (5 tridents), making you drool all over.
Check their site, and you'll know what I mean: you can't but dream of it at night..

If you would have asked me 7 years ago (or even 3) I would never have even considered the thought of spending that money on a vacation. Heck, I probably travelled a month with it, carrying nothing more than a backpack, and going by foot or by public transport.
By now, it must be the getting older, I do appreciate luxury and ease of mind. While a bit over my budget today, you could ask me (hopefully) in 5 years, and I am pretty sure I would not mind spending the money.

The pro's?
You don't need to think of anything. You want a drink, you get one, you have a good hotel-bed, a room which is cleaned every morning, you have food, as much as you want. Your ski passes are arranged, and so are your boots and boards. You have your teacher, and if you are lucky, like me, even your personal trainer.
I think it is great fun to rent an apartment to go skiing, but I certainly am not fond of getting home after an exhausting day of skiing/surfing and having to cook or clean, and ending up in a bunkbed.
(Be sure to check the out-of-season discounts as you might notice renting an apartment and eating on piste often isn't that cheap after all, you might be better off with a Club Med Deal)

The spa, and out-door swimming pool + sauna are superb, and make this hotel worth its 4 tridents. Definitely.
You bet I am going to the heated outdoor pool or the sauna, the moment I finished this post.

The Spa, in this regard, needs some explanation: Les Cinq Mondes is an initiative of Jean -Louis Poiroux, who took the genius decision to travel the world during 10 years in search for the best treatments and massages. It resulted in a series of thretments, massages marked by quality, authencity and ceremony.
Poiroux corporated with Club Med to bring these experiences to some of their villages.

The excellent certified teachers at the ski-school bring 'learning' to a higher level. All of us had classes, all of us came back really happy about that, some of us starting from point zero, to others refining their techniques.

The friendliness of the GO's ** and GE's *** is hot and makes you happy. Really. It is such a simple thing, but it works.

The cons?
While the buffet is great, superb, and you tend to eat too much finding everything you long for in high quality, the 'haute cuisine' didn't live up my expectations.
Ok, I know I am spoiled, being a Belgian snob, having visited some high quality cuisine recently (Hof Van Cleve***, 2cooks (soon*)), but advertising 'a specialty restaurant' means aiming high. For reaching that aim, a better cook might be needed.
Or putting a different focus. (On the excellent buffet for example.)

The animation at night is great fun to watch, but not my cup of tea. (I know this is a very personal view. And I am pretty sure when I'd have kids, I'd be damn happy to have some animation to leave me alone keep them busy.)
I guess it is a real tradition of Club Med. And I am sure when in group and after some of their mojito's I am capable of joining in, but it doesn't lie in my true nature. :)
(I admit it was rather entertaining, and left me with open mouth at certain moments.)

And last, one tiny nitwit remark from my side: thermostatic faucets.
It's a detail. And pure luxury.
But I truly believe in these details turning a hotel into a hotel with a plus: pure comfort.

My overall experience:
Super: I happened to have the luxury to have a private teacher (due to the fact some people cancelled their classes) and I learned basic snowboarding in 1.5 days, making me pretty proud of myself.
I enormously enjoyed the great massage, which was pure luxury from beginning til end.
I loved the simplicity of things: You wake up in the morning, eat, get your gear, which was given to you upon arrival, and are driven to the snow. At noon, you have lunch, all inclusive, at 4, you're back at the hotel, where your room has been cleaned, and after you shower, take a nap, you can go to a massage or relax in the sauna or the swimming pool, chit chat, or work on the wireless connection in the hall.
Thirsty? Get yourself a free drink. Hungry? Ask for something.
At night, there is the buffet, offering each time something special. Making you go back at least one time, or 2 or 3.
And last but not least: their mojito's rock. (and contain the perfect amount of alcohol.)
Yep, definitely a nice experience.

This review is my personal opinion.

Video of my experiences...

While I wanted to make a video like this of myself:

(my teacher coming of the mountain, exactly like I can..)

My teacher didn't turn out a perfect camera man, resulting in these...

You'll have to trust me on the fact I can snowboard now. I really can!

Presentation at De Ham

It was kind of last minute... Yesterday, death tired after too many hours on a snowboard, I did have to prepare a short lecture I had to give this morning. A dead battery and a delayed plane later, I just dragged myself to bed, to wake early this morning, preparing the whole thing just in time.

Nothing too fancy. But ready to be shared with you... (and with the students, who might need this for their exams ;) )
(Will be refined for the one next week...)

What's best, driving a Maserati or an ordinary Volkswagen?

telenut.jpg

Here at home, we passed our download limit again.
3rd month in a row...

The last few months this could have been explained, since we're quite keen (correction, I am quite keen) on downloading movies from 2007. But Joox.net closed down.
So the only 'heavy' downloads this month were Lword. Which makes a max of 4 times 500mb, take into account 2 times error, resulting in 3gb.
Except for those, we don't do anything unusual: watching some YouTube, and I did try listening to my iTunes over the network.

So, Telenet advertising speed is something like advertising a Maserati, with an empty fuel tank within minutes.
Because what's interesting about 'superfast' internet when you reach your downloading limits so fast?

I'd prefer a Volkswagen, with a normal to economic consumption rather than that Maserati.
So Telenet, skip the red button, drop the overspeeding racecar, just give us fast internet and a larger download limit.

Because that's all we want and all we need.

You Are Beautiful

We live in a world that bombards us with fear-inducing marketing aiming to convince us that we're too ugly, too fat, or too old so that we'll go out and buy stuff to fix it. How often, if ever, do we get sweetly and succinctly told that there's nothing wrong with us? It's the simplicity behind You Are Beautiful that makes its message so immediate and powerful.

The creators of the site and all it's members are anonymous, choosing to let their message speak for itself. Collaborators design different versions of the three words "you are beautiful" and then hi-jack public areas that would normally contain advertising. From more traditional graffiti spaces to usurping billboards and lining the insides of advertising-riddled subway cars, the idea is to replace the ubiquitous consumer-driven messaging we normally see with a compliment. A little burst of positivity, unexpected in the midst of buy-buy-buy messaging, that asks us to do absolutely nothing but feel good about ourselves.

The collected images of how the message has manifested itself created an exhibition that's appeared in galleries around the world. Living up to the true nature of its movement, You Are Beautiful seeks out individuals to contribute as well. People can let out their inner artist with their very own version of the message, be it public or private, and send pics to the site for posting. The only thing they ask is that the message not be commodified or sold in any way - to just always be free and always be true to itself.

Plus, for just the price of postage, Are You Beautiful will mail you a free package of stickers. Spread the message, take pics of where you put your stickers, and send them to the site to be added to the collection.

So let us all collect some stickers and tag our cities with them!
I already ordered mine!

Wolves touching ground.

Cai Guo-Qiang is one of the most prominent living Chinese artists. Trained in theatre design, in 1999 he won the International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennale. He is best known for his firework-based set-piece installations and for drawings made using ink and gunpowder. In November, a set of 14 untitled drawings by the artist sold at Christie’s, Hong Kong, for £9.5m ($19.1m)—setting a new record for a Chinese contemporary artist at auction.

The Guggenheim in New York hosts Cai’s first major retrospective, I Want to Believe. And this until May 28th.On none of my trips to NY, I happened to find time to visit this museum.
Hopefully next time it will be possible. And hopefully it is before May 28th...

Help

fine_help4.jpg
Help is a new line of healthcare products designed by Richard Fine who was inspired when shopping for pain relievers for a headache. The experience only made his head hurt more: the ugly packaging screamed out slogans under the neon lights, adding to the confusion. Fine’s response was to create simple packaging out of soft molded paper pulp, designed to be calming. The first two products are “help I have a headache” and “help I’ve cut myself”, tablets and bandages, respectively.

Meme

Passed by C. So I do have to answer on this one ;) and since I am a kind of meme person I do not mind :)

1. Pick up the nearest book of 123 (or more) pages.
'Fantastisch' , by Kris Verburgh. (Got this one after giving a lecture in Kahog Mechelen. No clue yet what it is about.)

2. Open the book to page 123 and find the 5th sentence.
Het is dus bijv onzin te stellen dat er 1 'godgen' is, dat de bezitter ervan de neiging geeft om in een opperwezen te geloven.

3. Post the next 3 sentences:
Dat wil niet zeggen dat één bepaald gen geen belangirjke invloed kan uitoefenen op gedrag. Zo viel het oog van enkele nieuwsgierige genetici op een familie waarin geweldadig gedrag veel voorkwam. Verschillende vaders, broers en ooms waren al in e gevangenis terechtgekomen voor allerlei zware misdaden.

Mmmm, wondering what the next part of the book will bring...

3 more volunteers for this meme?
I tag:
Zinloos (who probably give a 'no-answer' anyway :) but I am kind of curious which books give him his writing inspiration)
Corneel (as he tends to read stuff I really like)
Druppels (well, a combination of both above :) )
And one extra if Zinloos drops out :P: Volume12, since he has lists full of reviews, but sometimes I am quite interested in some excerpts out of those books.

Scam

zever.png

Dear friend X,
Very nice of you for inviting me to this game to win an iPhone.
I already have one, you know...

But besides of that, I just wanted to warn you:
Sites like these are scam!

Never never give out your msn password.
Whenever they ask you to do, you should know a password is called 'pass' ' word'. You're enabling them to do a lot of things, like grabbing your password, your contacts, and a lot of other stuff (sending emails, virusses, and checking if your contacts are real)

So please be aware.
And don't be surprised if suddenly you find yourself with one or another problem (like a virus.)

Yours,
Ine

Noooodle by Konstatin Slawinksi

noooodle1.jpg noooodle2.jpg

Haa! Finally! For people like me who never know how much pasta to cook (it's always either too much or too little and I'm either unsatiated or have two days of leftovers), Konstatin Slawinski of ding3000 solves the issue with his SL16 Noooodle, a chrome device that measures amounts of spaghetti for up to four people and doubles as a trivet.

noooodletrivet.jpg

Resembling a cooked piece of entangled spaghetti, the four round holes portion out the correct quantity depending on the size of your party. We love the dual functionality which makes the implement go from the kitchen to the table—so you can serve your pasta without burning your tabletop. Now if they could just do something about measuring Gemelli.

Red hanky..

I wasn't sure if this ad was real or not. It just had to be a spoof.
After checking it online, seeing some major newspapers & Vista Magazine wrote about it, and verifying with someone within MS itself made me assume it is real, yet, it is still hard to believe for me.
Really. How can someone *not* know, how could it pass all controls.
I am not talking about song, or the cheesiness (which was surely meant to be), but about the red hanky Bruce/lookalike is wearing..

rockin-our-sales-microsoft.jpg

When seeing this picture, you definitely have to think about Bruce Springsteen's cover of Born in the USA.

AlbumCovers-BruceSpringsteen-BornintheU.S.A.(1984).jpg

But repeating this image nowadays is rather strange.
Bruce did have a lot of 'trouble' after putting his but on the cover like that.
Because red hankies in your right back-pocket do mean something, from a gayish point of view.

The Gay Hankie Code, has been around since the 1970's. The different colors are code for what activity you are looking for and if you the giver of such activity it goes into your left pocket, if you are the receiver of such activity it goes into your right pocket. The red hankie is a bit hardcore. You may want to fully understand the code before you go about dropping hankies into your back pockets.

Bruce had the excuse back then it wasn't a hanky, but a baseball hat.
Yet, today it is definitely a hanky.
Red actually means 'f*st f*ck'
Right pocket means you're the passive one, the bottom, the one being 'screwed' ;)

Getting this translated into the Vista ad (rockin our sales = red hanky)..
Well....from a marketing point of view it wasn't really the best choice made, I guess.

(Luckily they didn't choose 'Teal Blue' *rotfl* )

After re-reading all of this, I do think it is a good joke they made.
Just because of that red hanky :)

Re:vision Camera Cuffs

camerabracelets1.jpg camerabracelets.jpg

Kinda cool:

Australian designer Craig Arnold combined his passion for cameras and recycling to create Re:vision, a line of bracelets made by reshaping and polishing discarded cameras parts. The stylish hand-finished cuffs are available in eight models with themed names, like the Aperture cuff, Focal length cuff, Wide Focus cuff and Lens thread cuff.

The Re:vision Cuffs are available from Oye Modern and start at AU $190.

Moblogging with iPhone and Proximus

postIt took a while but mms blogging on the iPhone is a fact.
Sending an MMS on an iPhone was impossible. If it weren't for eager developers, it would stll be.
Meet SwirlyMMS, a native iPhone app for hacked phones.
Combine it with a Proximus MMSBlog, and have yourself a free MoBlog.

To make things easy for you, I decided to go geek today, and send you the right settings (as I found out the question is repeated over and over in forums and actually I figured out the answer myself..)

MMSC: mmsc.proximus.be/mms
Proxy: 10.55.14.75:80
APN: event.proximus.be
Username: mms
Password: mms

Thats it..

Send your messages to 4488 (free) and see them appear in your moblog.

The Information Machine (Mash up)

This video is a mash-up of the “The Information Machine,” by Charles and Ray Eames. The original was produced for the IBM Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, and attempted to demonstrate how modern computing and human creativity were developing hand in hand.

Additional footage comes from the 2007 IBM Global Leadership Forum held in Washington, DC. Those speaking include IBM CEO Sam Palmisano, IBM Senior Vice President for Technology and Manufacturing Nick Donofrio, and US Department of Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez.

I am still stunned when seeing the absurdity of Israel and Palestine. One more picture to illustrate it.

“Na’im El’iam (36), a Palestinian resident of the Jabalyah Refugee Camp in Gaza, holds the body of his three-month-old son Muhammad. The body is wrapped in blue cloth. On orders of the security forces, Na’im is standing in the parking lot near Erez Checkpoint, which is closed to traffic due to violent confrontations between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza. Na’im El’iam was trying to get home in order to bury his son, who died of a congenital heart defect in Israel’s Tel Hashomer Hospital, after doctors tried to save his life. The Palestinian father arrived at Erez Checkpoint, the main border crossing between Israel and Gaza, just as it was getting dark - a few minutes after a shooting incident between Hamas fighters and Fatah members who were hiding inside the checkpoint. After waiting for the shooting to end and then for his documents and permits to be checked, Na’im El’iam was permitted to cross the checkpoint to the Palestinian side with his son’s body.”

HardDisk Trouble

Grumblll. Like many others I happened to had a failing Hard Drive. I am lucky: I managed to get it working again, and at the time speaking, everything is being backupped onto another drive, after which the drive can die slow at the repair center.
Nothing's lost.
It was our main media disk (movies, music, series) connected to the Mac Mini: a beautiful Lacie Mini Hub.
I suspect the failure is due to the heat underneath the Mac Mini.
The thing is still under warranty, so except for the fact I'll need to run back and forth, I probably get a free repair.

Nevertheless, again I got worried about the 'back upping going down'. I musn't think of what would happen with me when my disks with pictures would die.

At this very moment, my MacBook Pro is 'TimeMachined' onto a Lacie 320gb drive.
All my pictures are stored on 2 500GB My Books, and all our movies and media were on the Lacie Mini Hub.
We bought an extra MyBook Mac for Media on the Mac Mini (as it seems we collect rather lots of series ;) )

A while ago I started looking for the perfect backup. Back then I gave up.
Today, while prices are more 'friendly' when talking about RAID, I glanced at the Lacie 2big Triple.
Plain ugly, but RAID and TimeMachine enabled.

Anyone has any experience with this or other affordable RAID systems? Please let me know in the comments.
