5 simple no-nonsense SEO rules to follow
First of all don't be fooled by SEO professionals. 95% of the offers are scam. The rest are serious professionals, but unless you are running a million dollar business you don't need them. Just follow these 5 suggestions and you can be sure you've done everything you can to rank high in Google.
- Include the keywords in your domain name, page title and h1 article title. So for example if you want to sell squirrel food, register the domain squirrelfoodforsale.com. Include the keywords Squirrel Food in the page title and h1 article title. Include the same keywords in the body copy as well, but don't overdo it. Just make it natural.
- Make sure as many related sites link you as possible. Not only the link has to include your keywords but the title of the article linking you should include it too. So if petfood.com links your site from the article Feeding your squirrel then you've got a valuable link.
- Use Analytics and AdSense on your page, so Google can monitor the traffic of your site and make sure many people visit your page.
- Update your site and page often. Google gives priority to content that has been updated within a week for obvious reasons.
- Avoid links from spam and fake sites. You can get blacklisted easily and you will do more harm with such links than good.
Don't spend too much time on SEO, working on your product is time better spent, because there is nothing better than being linked organically.

Deseo, Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Seeing the frequency of my posts lately it is very obvious the time for blogging is minimized due to too much work...
When browsing my feedreader, I stumbled upon this.
How I wouldn't mind to go over and spend some time to unwind, to lie down and just enjoy nothingness...

"The Mayan Riviera, long visited for stunning archaeological ruins and scuba diving, now has the ultimate destination for relaxation. Deseo, in Playa del Carmen, maintains the charm of old fishing villages along the Caribbean coast, yet in the smoothest of transitions, offers the best of today's lifestyle. Open-air lounges, seabreeze and succulent dishes can be enjoyed in a purely refined atmosphere. The cocktails let alone the sounds of the best DJ's from around the world will intoxicate you into a soothing state of mind."
I am sure my girl wouldn't mind joining in :)

The future today.
Kinda cool car, very retro yet future.
I love it. I want one (at 17.000 euro quite affordable, knowing that your expenses per km are reduced immensely.

One look at the Aptera, and you’d swear that it could fly. Coming off as a cross between a single engine Cessna and something George Jetson could be seen flying around in, this spectacular new breed of plug-in electronic hybrid vehicle sets our design obsessed, eco-friendly hearts aflutter. While this sweet ride may not be able to take to the friendly skies, it will save you a boatload of valuable gas money, getting over 230 miles per gallon. Not only does this awesome automobile set entirely new standards for environmental safety, but it does the same for passenger safety, employing a safety cage similar to that of a formula one racecar. It also contains an “eyes forward” vision system that gives the driver 180 degrees of rear sight. It may not be exactly ready to hit the road just yet, but for those living in California, you can reserve yours today. So if you inhabit the Golden State, want to be ahead of the environmental curve, and at the same time convince your neighbor that he or she overslept by about a hundred years, perhaps you should invest in an Aptera.

Suzuki’s Green Machine
More green design, but in a motorcycle...
The good folks at Suzuki are serious about going green and have been spotted testing their latest concept, the Suzuki Crosscage Hydrogen Fuel Cell Motorcycle. With no gears, no noise, no clutch and no emissions, this hydrogen fuel cell / electric hybrid two-wheeler just might be the future of motorcycles and is closer to reality than you might think. Seriously, there is a guy riding one in these pictures, you won’t hear it coming, but it is.
I wonder when hybrid and hydrogen come to Europe...

Wooden Radio with a mission

It's so retro looking, two tones of wood, and made by hand by carpenters in an Indonesian village with high unemployment. The designer Singgih Kartono wants to "redefine the relationship of the user between the product" and revitalize craft industries and local skills, while using local sustainable materials. Even the packaging is designed to be simple, minimal and reuseable for transporting the radio.
The designer decided he wanted to give work to an area with high unemployment.
Talk about eco, design and a mission :)

About pictures and copyright...
A while ago I read this, Mirthe writing about the fact that her copyrighted images were being used by 'Het Belang van Limburg'.
Today someone mailed me saying that my pictures were being used too.
It is actually a shame to see these newspapers abuse copyright like that. I wonder what would happen if we started to copy their articles over and over elsewhere. (Yes, I am referring to the case Le Soir-Google)
CreativeCommons is a great way of defining new copyright rules (I truly believe that in this world copyright should be redefined, as they changed dramatically) but the first ones that should apply these new rules is media.
When I mark my work CC-licenced as in: you can use it for non-commercial reasons, but for commercial reasons please contact me and pay me, then please hold-on to these rules.
I think both newspapers make good money on their site (seeing the ads they are running) so why not pay me? Or, at least, contact me, and ask me.
As they should!
I am pretty sure when I put SOFAM on this matter a lot of photographers will be happy as a HUGE amount of pictures are being used like this.
(I even think most of my readers having a flickr account and tagging their pics with location might find their pictures being used. Yes, you too, Pietel ;) )
Am I saying these newspapers cannot do this? No, don't read me wrong.
I am still in jeopardy... I have no real answer.
I am quite certain some photographers will be flattered, while others will call this 'broodroof'
Some way or another it should be possible to check this with Flickr, and make a tool that excludes copyrighted material.
One thing's for sure: Both newspapers use our images for free to fill their pages and make profit.
I hope they read this and give their opinion on it, instead of giving a lame answer.

(Notice the copyright on these images... I have put those myself)

GVA & BVL: The sequel
So they use my pictures without permission??
Hey, I know how you get these pictures. Just by lookng on a tag.
So I posted a picture with a specific tag, namely all the tags they use.
It works, my silent protest is now being showed on all those pages.
Nah!

I'd advise you all do the same ;)

GVA & HBVL: The result
I just had a phone call with Joris, the person who'll be responsible for CDMM the Concentra entity that publishes the gva & hbvl.be websites.
He'll invite us (that's you, photographers, too) to a meeting in Antwerp.
We'll be able to share ideas, and discuss what's possible and what's not.
Important note: It isn't my intention to 'attack' (or to 'win'), as said, I am the first to say the concept of copyright should be re-questioned these days.
But I didn't want things to be buried as if nothing had happened (yes, they'll remove the widget for the time being), as I think there are many interesting possibilities.(thinking of tweeduizend.be and sofort)
Possibilities in which all of us can find themselves.
This story hasn't ended. It just begun :)
Update:

Just to point out that many are using the system of gathering pictures elsewhere to fill content (and I am not pointing finger towards GVA & HBVL only): Gazet van Turnhout does the same ;). (Notice: there is a huge difference between this example and the former ones, this one doesn't make aliving out of it.)
Update2: Someone mentioned my pictures are not CC'd, but full copyrighted. Well, due to reasons like the one above, I fully copyrighted all my posted pics. But I'll never sue anyone using it without any profit. In my opinion, that's when it is 'free publicity'
When I see huge amounts of ads, and making profit out of it, it is.

Tips for marketeers on contacting bloggers.
Lately a returning questions is how you can reach bloggers. The nice thing about these people is, they just write about it, so if you google 'how to contact bloggers' you might find a bunch of useful answers...
I gladly refer all those marketeers to these tips:
1. Leave insightful comments on their blog.
2. Write great content and link to them.
3. Befriend them in their social networks.
4. Communicate with them personally.
5. Nominate them for awards (and tell them about it).
6. Offer to work or write for them for free.
7. Follow their advice (especially on relationship building.)
(More on Tips for befriending bloggers )
Next to the tips above, I cannot but refer those these great guidelines:
10 principles for Ethical Contact
- I will always be truthful and will never knowingly relay false information. I will never ask someone else to deceive bloggers for me.
- I will fully disclose who I am and who I work for (my identity and affiliations) from the very first encounter when communicating with bloggers or commenting on blogs.
- I will never take action contrary to the boundaries set by bloggers. I will respect all community guidelines regarding posting messages and comments.
- I will never ask bloggers to lie for me.
- I will use extreme care when communicating with minors or blogs intended to be read by minors.
- I will not manipulate advertising or affiliate programs to impact blogger income.
- I will not use automated systems for posting comments or distributing information.
- I understand that compensating bloggers may give the appearance of a conflict of interest, and I will therefore fully disclose any and all compensation or incentives.
- I understand that if I send bloggers products for review, they are not obligated to comment on them. Bloggers can return products at their own discretion.
- If bloggers write about products I send them, I will proactively ask them to disclose the products source.

My tips for marketeers
When it comes to my advise in how to deal with bloggers, I have a whole bunch, and you can call me for advise, but I can certainly sum up some of them:
- Don't sell.
We, bloggers, get many offers these days, and we always know when it is marketing or not. It will result in different style of writing.
The writing will be about the 'marketing action' rather than about the product. There is a huge difference. - Love the product your try to market, if you aren't convinced yourself, don't send it.
Example: At a recent event we got free goodies, including 'Lotus Speculoospasta'. It was delicious.
I once got a perfume that stank... - Be personal.
Example: A while ago I wrote about my favorite car, a vintage Saab convertible. I got an answer from a sales rep from the States, writing about his love for Saab and how he had the model I longed for. He even attached a picture of he and his wife in front of the car. It was a strong message, even though I am pretty sure he scanned Technorati on blogposts on Saab. Great marketing by a few simple words.
Example 2: I wrote about the pictures on GVA and HBVL only one day ago, instead of the impersonal mail a fellow blogger received, I was contacted by mail by the new marketing guy who apologized and immediately asked for conversation. That's new marketing: a person, not an impersonal letter. - Build a relationship.
Launching a marketing action amongst bloggers will work once, but not a second time if you don't work on a long term relationship.
You can't 'use' bloggers. In the long run, it will become a disaster.
Good example: Microsoft: one of their topthings was inviting bloggers to a conversation with Steve Balmer.
Bad example: Mortierbrigade (sorry guys): a Trainee mailing short mails with spelling mistakes, announcing a new action, without much info, nor personal interest. Felt like an impersonal newsletter, being ready to add to the spamfolder.
Hope it helps :)

What do I do, what do I want to do?
Sometimes people ask what I do for a living.
I am a photographer, but no thank you to wedding photography*, unless in very special conditions (family, friends, or you're able to convince me -better get me drunk for that-, or better: you promise me to let me do it 'my way' without being disappointed afterwards)(Actually, this no to wedding photography is mainly due to the fact I don't like to make albums. So, it's a good idea not to ask an album if you want me to take pictures at a wedding ;) )
I like/LOVE reportage and documentary, unfortunately, you can barely make a living out of that.
So I often do commercial stuff, mostly in the area I like: reportage and once in a while even a long term assignment.
Stuff I did can be seen here.
Next to that I design sites, for small businesses at reasonable prices.
I freelance for some agencies, doing web + design, and sometimes consultancy.
Yet, I admit, I am looking for new challenges. Less executive, more concept and thinking behind everything, more into design & marketing.
I am working on some concepts, next to my dream of traveling for a year, and when the time is there, I am pretty sure I'll present them to some people.
Until then, I am always available for creative thinking and new challenges (well, when the agenda allows it; quite booked until July..).
So don't hesitate to share your ideas.
*I happily refer to Giovanni, Pietel, Marijke for those. You can mention my name. And if you were happy with this advise you always may send me a thank you card.

Calendar Wallpaper from Christiaan PostmaEurope
Another way to fill your walls when you want to have an overview of your agenda is Dutch designer Christian Postma's Calendar Wallpaper, which puts the whole year up so you can see where the time goes (and where it went)...
Perfect for agencies to fill in their agenda's :)
And the next year you just put another paper on it ;)

Mewaf/Van Marcke presents Unchained Working.

Often we, bloggers, get invitations to all kinds of events, a lot of them nice, amusing or full of fun, yet, seldom as inspiring as the one yesterday.
Robin invited us in name of Mewaf to a presentation on their Unchained Working.
I already knew Unchained Working, probably of a late browsing session, looking for Belgian design, and I bookmarked them because of their unconventional approach of office design.
I was quite surprised to discover Mewaf is connected to/a branch of Van Marcke.
2 years ago I had the opportunity to go for a company visit and visit Interior 2006 on their invitation.
I loved the way brother and sister Van Marcke were telling their story, on how they asked a designer, how they looked for inspiration, and made what seemed impossible possible.
Everything was breathing enthusiasm.
To my great surprise I noticed Caroline Van Marcke was sitting at our table. Quite an opportunity to exchange ideas :) Something we all did.
Imagine sitting at the table with some presidents of a quite unique company, asking whatever you want to ask.
What marked the conversation yesterday, was the eagerness to learn from each other, and a healthy interest from all people sitting at the table.
The moment that struck me most was Mrs Van Marckes answer on C's question 'What's the key to your success'.
'Soul'.
It said everything these people were saying all evening: Believe, and if you do so, go for it.
Something which was said in different words a little earlier by Mr. Van Marcke himself.
I believe that his words not only impressed me.
More than often I need to explain to people what a blog is, so it came to a surprise that this man of 70 not only knows what a blog is, but told us he believes in communication and wants his employees to go and blog.
Unchained working is more than changing an office, putting less desks for more people, it's a culture, and a time shift. And next to that is a logical evolution since everything dramatically changed in the last 30 years (thinking of computers, shift to portables and mobiles).
Some of us might be born with it (I can't imagine working in a fixed office, I even refused one), plain fact is that most of us are living it, and old habits die hard.
I can imagine how difficult people find change, or the fact their desk isn't were it used to be. Actually, it is everywhere.
Besides the fact of the disappearing desk, it's being confronted with a new spirit, one of exchange, different communication.
It's nice to see a Belgian company isn't only working on developing this new idea, but it's also integrating this concept in their own offices.
(Van Marcke had a difficult successor story in 1999, yet, I believe, the company made some huge changes these last years resulting in a stronger brand, with a stronger identity. And, moreover, one which preaches innovation. I am still convinced in my point that Belgium has some fine design companies, unfortunately we don't scream this loud enough)

update: iPhone & Belgium & opinion
There are many ways to blow up a good marketing campaign, but the price for screwing up best goes to Mobistar.

After Apple announced the iPhone loud and clear, also for Belgium, soon things changed a bit from launch on July 11th, to launch unknown.
Also prices: unknown.
How hard can it be to announce a cristal clear price? I am sure they had enough time to think that over.
I hope for most 'longers' that Veerle hasn't it right, meaning that it will take a while before iPhones show up over here.
Why do I use the iPhone?
Uh? For calling?
Can't you use a normal phone for that?
Of course , but this one is much cuter, and a lot user friendly. Try to open an adressbook in your normal phone, or try to add a person, or even worse, open your settings.
I also like the fact I can easily sync my contacts and my agenda, not to forget, the UI is very simple and for that reason I like to take pictures with it.
It is much easier than on my former phone.
Would you buy a new iPhone?
I don't think I need a new one now. What does it add? 3G, but with the current Belgian data plans, it feels like my pockets are being emptied.
For the GPS, this dataplan is also needed as it uses Google Maps for GPS.
Maybe if they'd add TomTom, and I wouldn't need data, I'd be tempted. If there would have been a better camera, I would have been interested too.
Anyhow, I don't believe in the 200$ price. This will never be the case in Belgium, because we are not allowed to sell packages. (*Note, in Italy an untied 8GB costs 499, a 16GB 569.)
And next to that the OS will be upgraded for all phones, so I'll get the same phone, but without 3G and a GPS.
My further remarks: we know my opinion on 3G and seriously, the plans are way too expensive in Belgium..
So that leaves me to the GPS, which is actually interesting.
But... why did Steve Jobs compare the 3G with the N95, and he didn't do this with the GPS? Simply because it isn't faster.
And thus, it is pretty useless, as we already know the GPS in the N95 is bullsh*t. According to Bart, it is good when walking in the streets, but not very useful in the car.
As I understand it doesn't take the signal well. So it simply isn't strong enough (probably because it would drain batteries too fast.)
I don't understand why Apple decided to put a lousy GPS in the iPhone. They could have put a good 5MP camera instead of a bad GPS.
They could have enabled 3rd parties to make a good GPS receiver. (like many others did)
And put TomTom inside of it, instead of the Google - I need a dataplan- Maps.
My conclusion:
-3G at too high prices
-Lousy GPS
-Still 2MP camera
-Ugly black back
-And a free update to iPhone 2.0 for old phones
So here at home, we're pretty happy with our old (i)phones ;) and stick a little longer to it.

A new firefox and a new Piclens...
...both blading fast.
I installed both a while ago, but their recent updates definitely are more than welcome.
I dropped Firefox a while ago due to it lazy attitude on my mac (sloooooooooow) and piclens on Safari wasn't a big deal. Yet I seriously consider going back.
It's certainly nice to see how both got so much better, bringing browsing to a new level and speed.
S
ince it is Firefox Download Day 2008, I'd recommend you to download it.
Not only is it the best 'spreading campaign' ever for a browser (what a marketing), it's simply so much better than IE, one should not hesitate to install it :)
Piclens also surprised me in a nice way. While gaining speed, it also gained some features. You now can browse Amazon, amongst others (Flickr, Google, YouTube,...)
A pity their Safari counterpart is still not that perfect...

Geeky talk: when your mac freezes upon restart
Ok, this is what happened: my girlfriend's mac froze after restarting from Vista to Apple.
Grey screen, loading bar. Nothing.
Here's what was in my mind 'ooooooooh no, she's gonna kill me.'
Several restarts later nothing happened, yet I always heard the startup sound (which is a good sign, believe me.)
Meanwhile: almost heart-attack and on the verge of fainting, and a girlfriend that got closer home by the minute...
So I decided to try a different way: open with alt, decide to choose Windows partition instead of the mac. It started up!!!!. SO I closed it down and restarted. And waited, and waited. And it worked!!!
So for all of you in fear of your girlfriend killing you: stay calm, there is hope.
Now excuse me, I have to go and backup a computer. Just in case this happens again with a fatal error...

Beautiful pearl.
Today, I was sitting in a jury of a final Professional Bachelor in Art.
I saw a lot of crap. And some good crap. And then a beautiful pearl.
And it was fantastic..
Can't tell names, nor show work, but I hope to do so in the near future.
Because it was really stunning beautiful!

Need.a.break. Long.for.a.holiday.

I really long for a vacation. don't know how or why, but the last 3 months were quite hectic (hey, I almost don't blog anymore...It has a reason.)
So we're urgently in search for the best buy: an all-in thing (I never believed I'd say this.) to lie near a beach and rest. And red some books.
While searching for such a delight I stumbled upon some beautiful design hotels.
Unfortunately the prices were a *little* above average ;)
In case you have some more money to spend, or are interested in drooling:
Hillside Su Hotel
EV
And the best one of them all (If I'd ever decide to get married AND want to do it in Turkey, it would be here): Adam&Eve Hotel
(And if it would be Thailand, she can ask me here: The library :))
Anyone who knows (a whole lot) cheaper and still good deals: feel free to mail.

Dag van de biotechnologie
I was asked to picture the 'Day of Biotechnology'. It turned out interesting, and I made some cool pics. :)

Glow
Glow comes to Belgium... Some memories suddenly come back.
While living in Israel, I shared an apartment with this wonderful lady.
She worked for the British Council, and often I was invited for cultural events (and less cultural but as exciting :)).
I believe I've met Lior Kalfo (the director of this show) once in a while on some of these events. Or maybe he just lived in the same neighborhood.
I saw the interview and suddenly everything was back.
All day, when I close my eyes, I am elsewhere.
Glow seems a promising show, with loads of wow-effects.
Something perfect to see with family.
Hey littl' bro, feel like going?

Wordpress hacked
Thanks to Bart, who noticed the hack, I was very 'happy' spending some hours on updating someone's site. I admit: the update was needed, yet one would think WordPress was not 'that' unsafe...
The reason why I postponed it was definitely the fact that 2.5 would break my K2 based theme, which it did (the Dashboard is still not reachable at the moment due to this problem)
I thought upgrading would fix my 'we were hacked' problem.
But it didn't.
Fortunately there is google, resulting in some wise words: Robert Galoppini explained it a bit closer, and I knew which files I didn't upgrade (my content + theme folder), localizing the problem pretty fast.
In the header.php I found a weird script.
I deleted it, which resulted in a clean blog.
The hacking-script, basically adding pr0n sites with a display:none, was not particularly well done, since the outcome did appear in rss-readers (the display:none gets ignored in rss), but yet very effective.
I am writing this to make you aware: Wordpress sites do get hacked.
And my lesson learned: even if it causes some problems, don't forget to upgrade once in a while...

Best Hoax Ever

The news of a long lost Brazilian tribe that had strayed away from civilization to be found while taking a aerial survey of the amazon was a big fat hoax.
José Carlos Meirelles, the photographer in question to have discovered the trib explained that authorities have known about this particular tribe since 1910.
The photographer and the agency that released the pictures wanted to make it seem like they were members of a lost tribe in order to call attention to the dangers the logging industry may have on the group.
The photographer recently came clean, and news outlets, perhaps embarrassed at having been taken for a ride, have been slow to pick up the story.
Catch the whole story on Yahoo News.
Haha, I wonder if the Morgen and the Standaard put a correction :)

Members of the Europarlement make money out of vacation

According to this reportage, there are several members of the Europarlement making money by signing in while leaving few minutes later.
I am not sure how accurate this is, but I stick to the saying 'where there is smoke...'
I hope spreading the movie might make sure measurements are taken to avoid this total waste of money..
Hey eskimokaka, are you aware of such stuff happening in Brussels?
