About pictures and copyright...

A while ago I read this, Mirthe writing about the fact that her copyrighted images were being used by 'Het Belang van Limburg'.
Today someone mailed me saying that my pictures were being used too.

It is actually a shame to see these newspapers abuse copyright like that. I wonder what would happen if we started to copy their articles over and over elsewhere. (Yes, I am referring to the case Le Soir-Google)

CreativeCommons is a great way of defining new copyright rules (I truly believe that in this world copyright should be redefined, as they changed dramatically) but the first ones that should apply these new rules is media.
When I mark my work CC-licenced as in: you can use it for non-commercial reasons, but for commercial reasons please contact me and pay me, then please hold-on to these rules.
I think both newspapers make good money on their site (seeing the ads they are running) so why not pay me? Or, at least, contact me, and ask me.

As they should!

I am pretty sure when I put SOFAM on this matter a lot of photographers will be happy as a HUGE amount of pictures are being used like this.
(I even think most of my readers having a flickr account and tagging their pics with location might find their pictures being used. Yes, you too, Pietel ;) )

Am I saying these newspapers cannot do this? No, don't read me wrong.
I am still in jeopardy... I have no real answer.
I am quite certain some photographers will be flattered, while others will call this 'broodroof'
Some way or another it should be possible to check this with Flickr, and make a tool that excludes copyrighted material.

One thing's for sure: Both newspapers use our images for free to fill their pages and make profit.
I hope they read this and give their opinion on it, instead of giving a lame answer.

Hello Ine,

I'm sorry for all this.

As from July 1, 2008 I will be responsible for CDMM the Concentra entity that publishes the gva & hbvl.be websites.

Please contact me via mail or on my mobile. I definitely would like to discuss directly with you (and others) how we can make good arrangements for future use.

I'll try to have the widgets removed asap (I'm still a bit unfamiliar with the Concentra organisation, please give me a few days).

Yeah. This happens now and then apparently.

You'd think at least newspapers would "get" this sort of thing right...

Well, at least the answer above (Joris) is a lot more friendly than the one I received. At least he offers a solution.
