-2 witte eames stoeltjes
-1 sitonit zitzak
-1 tafel
-1 groot ikea tapijt
-1 super retro gebroken witte Pallade Lamp. (richtprijs 300 euro)
Feel free om te bieden!

Interieur & Design at Work Forum

En gezien de laatste gedachtenstromen (back to the roots) gaan we er dus zeker heen.

Los daarvan lijkt het colloqium me razend boeiend.

CreativeSkills Off Line

Wanneer? Op 27 september 2008 om 19u in DesignCenter De Winkelhaak.
INschrijven? Ja, hier

Nr 1 kan tellen. 'Nothing takes 5 minutes'. Indeed...
If only.

Design & reizen

En we zijn weg...
Knap concept.

Need.a.break. Long.for.a.holiday.

I really long for a vacation. don't know how or why, but the last 3 months were quite hectic (hey, I almost don't blog anymore...It has a reason.)
So we're urgently in search for the best buy: an all-in thing (I never believed I'd say this.) to lie near a beach and rest. And red some books.
While searching for such a delight I stumbled upon some beautiful design hotels.
Unfortunately the prices were a *little* above average ;)
In case you have some more money to spend, or are interested in drooling:
Hillside Su Hotel
EV
And the best one of them all (If I'd ever decide to get married AND want to do it in Turkey, it would be here): Adam&Eve Hotel
(And if it would be Thailand, she can ask me here: The library :))
Anyone who knows (a whole lot) cheaper and still good deals: feel free to mail.

Mewaf/Van Marcke presents Unchained Working.

Often we, bloggers, get invitations to all kinds of events, a lot of them nice, amusing or full of fun, yet, seldom as inspiring as the one yesterday.
Robin invited us in name of Mewaf to a presentation on their Unchained Working.
I already knew Unchained Working, probably of a late browsing session, looking for Belgian design, and I bookmarked them because of their unconventional approach of office design.
I was quite surprised to discover Mewaf is connected to/a branch of Van Marcke.
2 years ago I had the opportunity to go for a company visit and visit Interior 2006 on their invitation.
I loved the way brother and sister Van Marcke were telling their story, on how they asked a designer, how they looked for inspiration, and made what seemed impossible possible.
Everything was breathing enthusiasm.
To my great surprise I noticed Caroline Van Marcke was sitting at our table. Quite an opportunity to exchange ideas :) Something we all did.
Imagine sitting at the table with some presidents of a quite unique company, asking whatever you want to ask.
What marked the conversation yesterday, was the eagerness to learn from each other, and a healthy interest from all people sitting at the table.
The moment that struck me most was Mrs Van Marckes answer on C's question 'What's the key to your success'.
'Soul'.
It said everything these people were saying all evening: Believe, and if you do so, go for it.
Something which was said in different words a little earlier by Mr. Van Marcke himself.
I believe that his words not only impressed me.
More than often I need to explain to people what a blog is, so it came to a surprise that this man of 70 not only knows what a blog is, but told us he believes in communication and wants his employees to go and blog.
Unchained working is more than changing an office, putting less desks for more people, it's a culture, and a time shift. And next to that is a logical evolution since everything dramatically changed in the last 30 years (thinking of computers, shift to portables and mobiles).
Some of us might be born with it (I can't imagine working in a fixed office, I even refused one), plain fact is that most of us are living it, and old habits die hard.
I can imagine how difficult people find change, or the fact their desk isn't were it used to be. Actually, it is everywhere.
Besides the fact of the disappearing desk, it's being confronted with a new spirit, one of exchange, different communication.
It's nice to see a Belgian company isn't only working on developing this new idea, but it's also integrating this concept in their own offices.
(Van Marcke had a difficult successor story in 1999, yet, I believe, the company made some huge changes these last years resulting in a stronger brand, with a stronger identity. And, moreover, one which preaches innovation. I am still convinced in my point that Belgium has some fine design companies, unfortunately we don't scream this loud enough)

Just imagine...

Atelier Workshop is a 20ft. shipping container.
The portable cabin sleeps two adults and two children, is power, water and sewer independent, has one wall that folds down to create an open living space and folds back up to secure the unit for storage or relocation. It has a kitchen and complete bath, and can be hooked up to external services, as well.

Wooden Radio with a mission

It's so retro looking, two tones of wood, and made by hand by carpenters in an Indonesian village with high unemployment. The designer Singgih Kartono wants to "redefine the relationship of the user between the product" and revitalize craft industries and local skills, while using local sustainable materials. Even the packaging is designed to be simple, minimal and reuseable for transporting the radio.
The designer decided he wanted to give work to an area with high unemployment.
Talk about eco, design and a mission :)

Suzuki’s Green Machine
More green design, but in a motorcycle...
The good folks at Suzuki are serious about going green and have been spotted testing their latest concept, the Suzuki Crosscage Hydrogen Fuel Cell Motorcycle. With no gears, no noise, no clutch and no emissions, this hydrogen fuel cell / electric hybrid two-wheeler just might be the future of motorcycles and is closer to reality than you might think. Seriously, there is a guy riding one in these pictures, you won’t hear it coming, but it is.
I wonder when hybrid and hydrogen come to Europe...

The future today.
Kinda cool car, very retro yet future.
I love it. I want one (at 17.000 euro quite affordable, knowing that your expenses per km are reduced immensely.

One look at the Aptera, and you’d swear that it could fly. Coming off as a cross between a single engine Cessna and something George Jetson could be seen flying around in, this spectacular new breed of plug-in electronic hybrid vehicle sets our design obsessed, eco-friendly hearts aflutter. While this sweet ride may not be able to take to the friendly skies, it will save you a boatload of valuable gas money, getting over 230 miles per gallon. Not only does this awesome automobile set entirely new standards for environmental safety, but it does the same for passenger safety, employing a safety cage similar to that of a formula one racecar. It also contains an “eyes forward” vision system that gives the driver 180 degrees of rear sight. It may not be exactly ready to hit the road just yet, but for those living in California, you can reserve yours today. So if you inhabit the Golden State, want to be ahead of the environmental curve, and at the same time convince your neighbor that he or she overslept by about a hundred years, perhaps you should invest in an Aptera.

Deseo, Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Seeing the frequency of my posts lately it is very obvious the time for blogging is minimized due to too much work...
When browsing my feedreader, I stumbled upon this.
How I wouldn't mind to go over and spend some time to unwind, to lie down and just enjoy nothingness...

"The Mayan Riviera, long visited for stunning archaeological ruins and scuba diving, now has the ultimate destination for relaxation. Deseo, in Playa del Carmen, maintains the charm of old fishing villages along the Caribbean coast, yet in the smoothest of transitions, offers the best of today's lifestyle. Open-air lounges, seabreeze and succulent dishes can be enjoyed in a purely refined atmosphere. The cocktails let alone the sounds of the best DJ's from around the world will intoxicate you into a soothing state of mind."
I am sure my girl wouldn't mind joining in :)

Vitra House at Vitra Campus
I didn't know but Vitra has VItra Campus in Weil am Rhein.
Vitra Campus ahs a series of building by impressive architects (Jean Prouvé, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, ..)
And they are building Vitra House by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron now...

The Vitra Campus is a playing field – but for serious games. An industrial park in the heart of Europe does not at first sight appear to be the appropriate place for risk architecture; however, both technical innovation and artistic exploration are aspects of a desire to experiment that has resulted in an amazing collection of signature architecture in Weil am Rhein. From the dynamic forms of the Vitra Design Museum by the Californian Frank Gehry or the rushing forms of the Fire Station by the Anglo-Iraqi architect, Zaha Hadid, to the latest projects by the Japanese Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, or the Swiss Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, major world architects have helped to turn the dream of the entrepreneur and collector, Rolf Fehlbaum, into reality by creating a site near Basel that is committed to e xperimentation and artistic excellence.

On the new Vitra House:
The “VitraHaus“ is a direct, architectural rendition of the ur-type of house, as found in the immediate vicinity of Vitra and, indeed, all over the world. The products that will be on display are designed primarily for the private home and, as such, should not be presented in the neutral atmosphere of the conventional hall or museum but rather in an environment suited to their character and use.
By stacking, extruding and pressing – mechanical procedures used in industrial production – simply shaped houses become complex configurations in space, where outside and inside merge. The interior is designed as a spatial sequence with surprising transitions and views of the landscape. The landscape in all its variety – the idyllic Tüllinger Hills, the broad expanse of the railroad tracks, and the urbanized plane of the Rhine – was the incentive to design a building that concentrates on the vertical. In contrast to the other buildings on the Vitra Campus, an essential component of the design involved drawing the outdoors inside.

The Information Machine (Mash up)
This video is a mash-up of the “The Information Machine,” by Charles and Ray Eames. The original was produced for the IBM Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, and attempted to demonstrate how modern computing and human creativity were developing hand in hand.
Additional footage comes from the 2007 IBM Global Leadership Forum held in Washington, DC. Those speaking include IBM CEO Sam Palmisano, IBM Senior Vice President for Technology and Manufacturing Nick Donofrio, and US Department of Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez.

Noooodle by Konstatin Slawinksi

Haa! Finally! For people like me who never know how much pasta to cook (it's always either too much or too little and I'm either unsatiated or have two days of leftovers), Konstatin Slawinski of ding3000 solves the issue with his SL16 Noooodle, a chrome device that measures amounts of spaghetti for up to four people and doubles as a trivet.
Resembling a cooked piece of entangled spaghetti, the four round holes portion out the correct quantity depending on the size of your party. We love the dual functionality which makes the implement go from the kitchen to the table—so you can serve your pasta without burning your tabletop. Now if they could just do something about measuring Gemelli.

Help

Help is a new line of healthcare products designed by Richard Fine who was inspired when shopping for pain relievers for a headache. The experience only made his head hurt more: the ugly packaging screamed out slogans under the neon lights, adding to the confusion. Fine’s response was to create simple packaging out of soft molded paper pulp, designed to be calming. The first two products are “help I have a headache” and “help I’ve cut myself”, tablets and bandages, respectively.

The Design Globe

For people looking for a perfect gift for me, this one will do: A design globe to make me dream :)
The aim was to create a lifestyle mood light with the character of a globe. The result is a neutral design which compliments every interior whether hanging by an acrylic thread from the lounge ceiling or sitting on the acrylic ring in the office. When suspended the globe is optically freed as an object and appears to float in space. Pressing the dimmer switch illuminates the globe and the political information which is printed on the inside. Borders, country names and city names glow from within the globe. The neutral colours of the globe allow for the creation of many lighting moods through the installation of different coloured bulbs.

Billboard Building

Klein/Dytham Architecture’s Billboard Building:
The building is tiny. It’s a 11m long, two-storey high wedge, 2.5m wide at one end and tapering to just 600mm at the other. Although small, it has a prominent position facing a well-trafficked road. Being nearly all front, we let it be what it so obviously wanted to be – an inhabitable billboard.
The inherent challenge of designing an attractive and functional building on a plot of land this size must’ve been exciting, and I love the bamboo-garden facade, which casts a great shadow during the day.
Nice to add: Klein Dytham are the founders of Pecha Kucha ;)

Travelling Van

C already referred to our travelling dreams. Yesterday, while doing some research on eco and travelling, I stumbled upon the Westfalia Verdier Solar Power.
Not enough for longtime trips, but certainly enough for spending 2 weeks, or even 3.
With its hybrid engine (fuel, or diesel + electric), its solar panels, its use of bamboo, it's the almost perfect eco car.
Adding the wireless internet connection, it certainly reaches nr 1 in my top list of geeky things I want.
Unfortunately still a concept rather than reality.
But with a distinct pricing.
At 69000$ still a dream, yet not impossible.
(Notice also the different pricing: Verdier aims at an Airmodel of 38000$ and a Base model of 26000$)

Charles Ray Eames at Belgian Seaside

It's just the name of a residence, but with names like Eames, Nelson, and Van der Rohe, Rietveldprojects aimes high.
Their designs look promising, and I could only hope such designs arrive one day to the suburbs of Ghent...
Some more projects:

YMYL holster
Maybe this isn't a bad idea for the iPhone :)

Not a bad little accessory for your outfit...don't worry, you're cool enough to pull it off.
"Taking our cue from antique leather accessories and imbuing them with a modern purpose, the YMYL Holster is inspired by 'hard-boiled' detective fiction and Black Mask comics of the 20's and 30's. It is designed for packing beats… but as well as your iPod, it will also accommodate your phone, passport, cards, cash, lipstick, and other travel essentials."

Soil

Arja Rantala and Sami Haikonen are the two young designers behind the Finnish design collective Osuma. The pair find inspiration in the forms of their surrounding countryside, as can be seen in Soil, a ceramic tile based on the topography of Helsinki's Töölö Bay. Left uncut, the tiles create a continuous landscape, but when used in smaller pieces new patterns begin to emerge.

Emergency Response Unit
Since the 2004 Asia tsunami, there has been a glut of designs and competitions aimed at better aid distribution in crisis zones. Most are unremarkable and not particularly well developed solutions. The ‘Bedu’ Emergency Rapid Response by Toby McInnes is a breath of functional air. It is designed to fit within the current logistical framework and features just about everything you could possibly need. All rolled up neatly in a barrel. If only it assembled itself.

Other current standouts in their selection include 60’s conference tables, an incredible 70’s Flower Ball floor lamp composed of metal-edged mother-of-pearl petals (shown), and an original Max Sauze cassiope hanging light. City-furniture.be doesn’t sell copies or reproductions, so if you collect original furniture (or if it just makes you a little weak at the knees) be sure to check this site first!

Toffee
I’ve been making an effort of late to carry around less junk with me. Anyone who knows me knows that wherever I am, there’s a giant purse or laptop bag — sometimes both — and I’m at the point where I’m realizing that it’s not only unnecessary, but bad for my back and making it even to harder to walk in heels. The simple fact is, I don’t even use half of the crap I carry around day in, day out. Enter Toffee — an Aussie company offering pebble-grain leather sleeves, briefcases and slings (black and brown are pictured above) to protect your precious Apple cargo. The sleeves run the color gamut, while the slings and briefs stick with a basic palette; whichever you decide on, however, you’re sure to turn some heads and cut back on the excess junk you lug around. Score.

Hang On For Life
Desk space is a premium so designers try to cater that by creating objects with smaller footprints. Take for example this Hanging Printer. The bulk of its components are actually underneath the desk. The paper feed and print head are the only parts sitting on the desk. The casing has an embedded LCD to indicate status. It makes for a simple clean modern aesthetic that’s actually quite a solve for today’s cluttered desktops.

Ebb Modern Bathroom Fixtures from UsTogether
I am pretty happy these cool bathroom fixtures. of UsTogether were way too expensive for my bathroomrenovation...
The glass-fronted tub and sink is certainly unique (though it could be difficult to keep clean!).
We're fond of the undulating line of the counter, sink and tub. The shower unit is cool, too...
...though you would need a wet room.
The combinations of different fixtures into a single unit is especially attractive.
UsTogether has two additional families of bathroom fixtures, Loop and Line.

Books, books, books
We went to Fnac last weekend and totally lost ourselves in the book department.
I bought this one 'Brochures' on beautiful graphical design for 'brochures' :)
The very descriptive title ' An Essential Primer for Today's Competitive Market' summarizes it all.
Nice designs, nice tips, and I especially liked the 50 tips for creativity.
I could have bought a whole lot more, but admitted, our weekly budget was spent, so we went home, and digged ourselves in our newly acquired treasures...

Onme Belt
For those days when you need your cell phone, keys and wallet but don't feel like carrying a purse, the onme bag is a perfect companion.
These were being carried in Fred Segal for a while but the designer has them made by hand and couldn't keep up with orders, so I'm thrilled to see them available again.
It's made in downtown LA of sweatshop free labor from a super soft leather.

Recently on Wallpaper- it looks amazing.
"When architects Makoto Takei and Chie Nabeshima (TNA) were asked to design a weekend house 185 miles from Tokyo, they came up with an ethereal, glass and wood mini-tower. Standing three storeys tall amid thick vegetation, it offers uninterrupted 360-degree views, its transparent skin flooded with light during the day and glowing at night when lit from within." Sustainable Writer’s Retreat
It’s easy to see how inspiration takes hold in ‘Watershed’ - a 100 square foot writer’s retreat in Oregon that is as sustainable as it is engaging. Commissioned by a well-known nature writer and designed by FLOAT architectural research and design, this small-scale project fulfills its intention of revealing the surrounding ecology while allowing observation without disturbance. Completely recyclable and constructed with an ultra-light footprint, ‘Watershed’ does well by its name.
I wouldn't mind sitting in this shed for some days... I might end up with some interesting blog posts... ;)

The Venturo Prefab
Just found this prefab of the seventies. Way too cool!
There is really nothing new about many of the modern prefabs that everyone is going gaga over; back in the 70's Finnish architect Matti Suuronen designed the Venturo, a bit less extreme than his wonderful Futuro House. It appears to have been used primarily as gas stations for BP....[From Wayback Machine 1971: The Venturo Prefab]

Alain Gilles: playground redesign

Alain Gilles is a Belgian product designer who created a new playground concept.
Pretty futuristic, yet organic.
'Children acquire a lot of social behaviours through playing. So, what they play with greatly matters. In cities, the playground is often one of the few outside places children ave free access to. It is time to redefine te functions a playground should offer in ten years from now, by 2015. Considering that most social needs of children age 3 - 8 will not have significantly changed. They need to exercise, but they must also acquire self-confidence, and social values. Too often, playgrounds are seen as boring and deserted. Hence, the idea to have a solid structure allowing for different games to be rotated between playgrounds.'

What's happening with the renovation anyway?
Yep, indeed quiet on this blog. Why, because the last month I have been renovating a bathroom.
Remember the pics...
How it used to be:
(Yes, that was it. Ugly pink and something like 1m50 on 2m20)
Today:
(See the view from above if you can't make a 3d out of it.)
Note: Our 'stukadoor' just didn't answer phones anymore (maybe he got abducted by aliens.)(Actually I wouldn't mind. He gave me a lot of nightmares and headaches.)
So the shower is indeed not finished (try to find 'ne plakker' these days, it turns out to be very very hard...) The shower will feature black mosaic tiles.
Kudos to my girl who designed it so minimalistic. (She's available for redoing/reshaping/redesigning your apartment/home btw)

How To... Make This Chalkboard Wall Calendar
Personal schedules can get completely out of whack this time of year. Keep it all right in front of you with a giant Chalkboard Wall Calendar. Learn how to make the one pictured above here, from Martha Stewart...
All it takes is black and white chalkboard paint. Start with solid black and gradually lighten random squares by mixing in degrees of white. Even when you're not using the calendar, it makes for a bold, graphic accent wall.

K Way Collectors
I wouldn't mind wearing these...
Or getting one as a present for that matter.
More than 40 years after the birth of the famous jacket, K-WAY asks 4 Belgian fashion designers to re-style the legendary model and give it a new dimension. The response of the requested designers were unanimously positive, which shows the sympathy of its brand. The choice of K-WAY eventually fell on Cathy Pill, Sofie D'Hoore, Christophe Coppens and Jean-Paul Knott, all famous and creative professionals. Two women and two men for 4 creative visions, by K-WAY…

Pimp my Billy
In need of some furniture, but you're not willing to spend too much money.
Ikea always has been the perfect spot, except for: everyone has it.
Pimping Ikea furniture is a big hype now, and you can check IkeaHacker for that.
For those not willing to DIY, some designers have ready made pimps.
Three young designers from Germany, taking issue with Ikea's rather bland Billy shelving units, reinvented the furniture in a series of designs that repurpose the unit. Called Pimp my Billy, the collection of design interventions cheers up a cheap bookcase to no end!
Billy Wilder takes the form of green branch growing across the Billy Bookshelf (above right). Billy Heidenreich is a shelf with a lectern attached for displaying your most beautiful photography books (below left), while the Stütze functions as an extra leg to tilt the bookcase at an angle so there's no need for book ends (below right). All the designs are beautifully made and will probably last longer than your Ikea shelving unit.
Carsten Schelling, Ralf Webermann and Sven Rudolph, all graduates of FH Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, make up the design collective that is Ding 3000. Check out the rest of their sleek, but entertaining furniture and product design on their site.

The tetron shelf is a modular storage unit that can be shipped flat and easily assembled without tools. As a versatile solution to media management tetron can accommodate dvds, cds and other small items. When mounted to a wall the unit can function alone or in a number of graphic configurations. The shelf may also be used independently of a wall while still retaining its practicality.

City Planning
I have always been a fan of city planning and modernity.
Quite difficult when living in a medieval city which got a port activity that as resumed and got some factories later on, making sure we ended up with small worker houses.
Check out what they are planning in Ghent, near the docks.
Quite interesting to know when you are looking for a new house to buy/invest.
Flanders in Belgium is distinguished by several magnificent historical inner cities of medieval origin and characterized by a wide spread ribbon (urban) development, which fills the space between the historical centers. This development has lead to a continuous sprawl. Today nearly all growth in Flanders is in the empty outskirts, making the city with its characterized mixed program and densities seem a superseded model.
In Gent, there is a unique possibility to go against this pattern of development and concentrate growth in a zone that will become part of the inner city when the ring road is extended. In a unique way, it is possible to compliment the historical center with a new part that answers to the modern needs of mass infrastructure and liveability.
Expanding the inner city seems the message.
A project by the city of Gent, executes by Rem Koolhaas

Table talks

Floor coverings
I wish I would have known this earlier. It might have been a cheaper solution for my for floor for the bathroom...
KERLITE PLUS, the ceramic solution you were looking for to renovate that old flooring. With a minimum height increase – from 3 to 3.5mm – KERLITE PLUS has a tough fiberglass mesh backing, doubling its cladding potential. The sky’s the limit for this stunning, minimum weight tile. With Kerlite it’s easy to lay new flooring in your home. But more than that, it’s economic and simple. KERLITE PLUS can be installed directly over existing flooring in wood, ceramic or any other compact type of surface. This is because the underside of the ceramic slab has been reinforced with a dense fiberglass mat. As well as allowing excellent heat conduction, this minimum thickness mesh ensures the tile sticks solidly to the adhesive spread on the substrate. With just 3.5mm additional floor height there’s no need to adjust the level of doors and jambs.

Prada, Armani or iPhone? A comparison.
They all look compelling beautiful, they all have a touch screen, and admitted, the Prada looks best.
But the geek in me wants to hear the features. And then, the iPhone just plain rules...
Yes, the reason to compare these is based upon style, tactile input and features.
(If it would have been for features only I would have added the N95 too.)
The comparison: (Prada, Armani, iPhone, in that order)
Basic phone: yes, yes, yes
Radio: yes, yes, no
MP3: yes(aac, acc, mp3, wma), yes(aac, eaac, mp3), yes (aac, mp3)
Video: 3gp+mpeg4, mpeg4, 3gp+mpeg4
Videorec: yes, yes, yes
Camera: 2megapix (1600*1200), 3,15megapix (2048*1536), 2megapix (1600*1200)
Zoom: 2*, 6*, no
Flash: yes, no, no
Basic Memory: 8mb, 50mb, 8gb
Expandable memory: yes, yes, no (micro SD for those who feature it, up to 2 gb)
Usb 2.0: yes, yes, yes
Screen: 240*400, 240*320 ,480*320
Bluetooth: yes, yes, yes
GPRS: yes, yes, yes
3G: no, no, no
Edge: yes, yes, yes
Wifi: no, yes, yes
Internet: no, yes, yes
Email: yes, yes, yes
Organizer: doc viewer , doc viewer, loads of extra programs
Videocall: no, no, no
Extra: voice memo+leather bag+earphones, built-in hands free, googlemaps+built-in hands free+voice memo
Size: normal, small, large
One of the extra features of the iphone certainly is the large screen, and the fact that it runs an os, which is probably not the case with the others. So upgrading the software is much easier.
When you love pictures more than the mp3player and internetconnectivity + browsing, then you need to go for the Armani Samsung. It is also a lot smaller than the rest.
For those in favor of a 'simple' phone with style: go for the Prada LG.
All other geeks will prefer the iPhone.
Tech specs Prada

Wesc
We found Wesc when shopping in Brussels: a cool set of headphones...
But when googling I found this cool site, with a lot more than headphones. Guess that makes me hold off that buy (Never buy audio from clothing brands.)
WeSC is a street fashion brand for intellectual slackers. WeAretheSuperlativeConspiracy symbolizes what WeSC as a company represents; a group, a family of good and competent people working towards the same ideal and goals.
WeSC is not merely a brand in the fashion industry, but rather a company within the skateboard culture. We create “street fashion”, clothing with roots in a subculture that sets its own rules and follows its own trends.
The company was founded on January 7th 2000, our official “Day of The Superlative Conspiracy”. The founders are all avid skateboarders and snowboarders.
WeSC is addressing people with awareness, regardless of race, religion or financial background. These people all share the values and lifestyle of the WeSC founders. We deliver “life after skate”, a more developed style that also targets people outside the skateboard community, but still shares its values. The particular “We-feeling” and community feeling in the skateboard culture is an ever present important key element in day to day operations of the company.
We are the superlative conspiracy.

Samsonite Black Label
Samsonite launched a black label featuring beautiful stuff.
I saw their Signat collection somewhere in an airport and immediately couldn't keep my eyes of the precious cases...
Inspired by the sleek, retro style of the original Samsonite Signat attaché, today’s Signat features pop-art prints and bold color, creating the ultimate “must have” fashion accessory. Mod interiors scream of fashion, femininity and fun. A true celebration of the avant-garde.
A Fashion “Must Have” Samsonite Black Label has taken the iconic symbol of the 1960s executive – the Samsonite Signat Attaché - and transformed it into a modern day ‘must have’ fashion accessory for the jet setter. The new look of Signat is inspired by the sleek, retro style of the early attaché. The new Signat offers a sophisticated style and sleek design, while still maintaining the functionality of its predecessor.
We like :)

Tetris Apartments by Ofis Arhitekti
Cool design. A pity I didn't find any pics of the interior...
Slovenian architects Ofis have completed Tetris Apartments, a social housing development in Ljubljana.
Here's a little bit of text from the architects:
"The building stands on the edge of the 650 apartments development which was finished year ago. By urban rules the block is 3 floors high and 65 meters long. Since the orientation of the apartments is towards the car road the apartment areas together with balconies are orientated to the quieter south side."

Say goodbye to plastic cutlery and hello to SpudWare cutlery made from 80% potato starch and 20% soy oil that's just as heat resistant and every bit as strong as plastic cutlery. The kicker? It biodegrades in just 180 days! SpudWare can even be washed and reused, so you can eat your potatoes with potatoes for months to come.

Prefab: Drop House
The Drop House landed on the prefab scene after winning the Modular Architecture Challenge in 2005 with its gorgeous aesthetic and easily-customizable system. A partial prototype was installed at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris at the time, and now, the stunning structure has been brought to life in full form. Architects Antoine Cordier, Olivier Charles and Armel Neouze created the Drop House concept to exemplify private housing, industry and customization. The design is turning heads for its potential to minimize waste, reduce energy and settle in style with the option to move on a whim.

Stacking Chairs Into Shelves
The idea behind stacking chairs was a good one. They can neatly be stored away when not in use but the problem is they still take up space. This particular design by Jun Murakoshi creates another usable function by turning stacked chairs into shelving. The idea in this duality is if you're going to take up space, might as well be useful and functional.

Nailing For Dummies
I'm not such a dummy when it comes to nailing (after one year of carpentry for my father that is). However I certainly hit several times my finger instead of the nail.
This is why I like this comcept:
You insert the nail inside the guide tube. Position the tube where you want the nail to be. The large top makes it much easier to manage a hammer slamming down on it. It also protects your precious and very useful fingers. Once the nail is pushed in, simply repeat the process. Your nail will always go in straight and square into its intended target.
Brilliant...

California Chair
Made by Belgian Pieter Maes, California Chair is looking for a solution on how to make a cheap chair.
The idea started with wanting to make a low-cost easy chair. Using skateboards for the majority of the structure, the price could be reduced significantly. The objective was making them unrecognisable so the chair didn’t have a street connotation. Therefore they’re padded and upholstered in Kvadrat to result in a luxurious and tactile seat.
Successful design I'd say :)

Table Chair
Sometimes you need an extra chair and sometimes you need a table. These modern chairs can be either or depending on your needs. By simply pushing the two chairs together they transform into a table. Each chair has a notch to slide in one another. Now unused seating has some other place to go. When you've got visitors and need an extra chair or two you simply pull them apart. Tada, you got two chairs! This needs to show up at IKEA stat!

Sneak preview of the bathroom design
Ha, pretty proud of what she designed for me.
The first sneak preview of my new bathroom.
Everything is ordered, fingers crossed the rest will follow as smooth...
The project is rather interesting*:
The priorities: low budget, a modern feel, and some attention for the rental status of the apartment. Especially the first and last one of those clearly limits options.
The technical limitations: non movable technical space, no possibility to change the toilet location.
A true not so little challenge.
* Here you can see how it is right now. Pics will follow.

Carter Burton Yoga Studio
What yoga does for the mind and soul, this thoughtfully-designed yoga studio does for its lucky green-minded inhabitants. Situated outside Washington DC in Clark County, Virginia, and designed by Carter + Burton Architecture, the small scale structure serves as a yoga studio and guest house for Annie and Paul Mahon's main house 100 feet away. Despite its compact 600 square foot footprint, the studio packs in the best of the best of green technologies, from SIP-based construction to geothermal, passive solar, locally-sourced materials, green roof, and LED lighting. The clients' and designers' commitment to sustainability earned the project a LEED Gold certification when it was completed in 2007.

But at Sept 22 and 23, some Belgian Designers are taking over the White Hotel with Designr.rvd. Not only can you see Belgian Design, you're also able to buy it.
And for the party animals: the Designr Party might be your cup of tea :)

Rocking Glass
I saw this glass years ago in a movie. And ever since I have been looking for it: it turns but never falls. Perfect to play with it.
I saw similar but never quite the design I was looking for. And then suddenly it popped up: The Rocking Glass by Normann-Copenhagen.
'Britt Bonnesen invented these cocktail glasses with thick, rounded bottoms after watching a film about old-time airplane travel and noticing how the dinner services were designed to compensate for the propeller plane's vibration. The tempered glass of this drinking set can hold both hot and cold liquids. No need to stir your drink; the rocking motion of the glasses will mix things up for you!'
Can be bought here, but they're not shipping to Europe... Trying to find an importer for Belgium...

Vitrine 2007
For ten days solid, Belgian and international fashion designers, fashion students at the Flemish Fashion Departments present their work in shop windows all over the city. Taking the general idea of a shop window to the creative limit, all sorts of shop windows get radically redressed, stocked with surprising goods or transformed into imaginative playgrounds.
VITRINE 2007 - SURFACES
This year’s theme for VITRINE will be SURFACES, in which the participants are challenged to make their own surface in the city centre, think about other and new surfaces, projections, the backstage, the catwalk, or more intimate with a pattern or embroidery...
From the 6th of September til 16th.

Useful design
Design is in many cases just making something useful into something beautiful.
It doesn't necessary add something to our comfort.
Product design in many cases does.
Like in this one: a universal toilet.
Incredibly smart and useful I believe. And beautiful on top.

On my wishlist: Off the Grid Homes: Case Studies for Sustainable Living
Six rather large contemporary residential architecture projects that integrate alternative technologies for generating and conserving energy are featured in Off the Grid Homes (from "somewhat on the grid" to "completely off the grid"). By the same author as Off the Grid: Modern Home + Alternative Energy, this book delves into different aspects of energy and resource independence, from rainwater collection, to photovoltaic (PV) systems, to gray-water systems and more. The case studies have lots of diagrams and explanations of technologies and their applications in context. Interesting factoid from the publisher, "A recent study found that after 15 years, an increase in America's alternative-energy investment would create almost 150,000 jobs, increase wages nearly $7 billion, reduce carbon-dioxide emissions roughly 30 percent and save close to $30 billion in electric and gas bills.". Paperback, 128 pages, well illustrated, $14.93 at Amazon. P.S. If you want small and off the grid, there's always the miniHome

Beautiful climbing wall
This is indeed a climbing wall, and is situated at the new Illoiha Omotesando fitness club in Tokyo.
The highlight is this climbing wall made of English stately home-style accessories such as picture frames and deer heads instead of the usual rock-shaped holds.
The Japanese designers Nendo did a hell of job with this one... It doesn't even look like a fitness club :)

Arne Quinze's cityscape
For the duration of one year, Brussels’ Quartier Louise will be enlivened by CITYSCAPE, an impressive wooden sculpture by Belgian artist Arne Quinze. The project is a joint operation with the car brand MINI, who has sponsored the art project. Quinze: ‘MINI has managed to change the face of the city. It is a vehicle that demands a reaction as it is almost impossible not to notice. MINI, to me, is a good example of successful communication.’ Simultaneous with the prelaunch of MINI CLUBMAN and during Design September 2007 (design events running from September 9th to 30th), Quinze’s CITYSCAPE will be open to the public from September 14th onwards.
The 18 meter-high artwork is built on 12 meter-high wooden stilts. Carrying the same ambiguous traits as its earlier siblings, of which UCHRONIA (a giant wooden sculpture, last year built in Nevada desert) is the most striking example, CITYSCAPE attracts Brussels inhabitants to its outskirts like a magnet. It encourages us to interact, boosting new energy in a somewhat discarded neighborhood. Floating in the air, it provides a shelter to curious visitors, a place for contemplation and silence.
Arne Quinze: ‘CITYSCAPE looks like a frozen movement; speed caught in time. It is a powerful means of communication, in many ways. If you look at it from a distance, pure movement seems to keep the volatile structure in the air. Sunrays play with the wooden beams; a game of light and shade creates ever-changing patterns. Its immense size – 40 meters long and 25 meters wide – absorbs you. CITYSCAPE calls for instant reactions, it’s impossible not to feel anything.’

Take Away Sink
I extremely like these designs: Don't know why, but it is something that seems interesting for application in travel vans and alike.
In domestic environments buckets are used in endless ways - whether it is for cleaning purposes, washing your feet, cooling beer or carrying something. With the “Take-Away Sink” there is no need for an extra bucket that has to be stored and that is often too big for filling it conveniently in an ordinary kitchen sink. Furthermore the possibility of removing the washbasin encourages the saving of water by the re-usage of it.

Cabin in the woods
I once had a girlfriend who's thought of the perfect housing was: a cabin... In Austria.
I guess in a way it added to our incompatibility...
But when I see this cabin, I almost re-think that idea :) (On the cabin that is, not on our incompatibility!)
Olle Lundberg, the remarkable architect, salvage junkie and erstwhile Ikea designer, not only lives on a ferry boat in San Francisco harbor, he has a cabin up north (Cazadero, Calif.) that we'd die for. Below are more pics of the woody, simple, airy and largely reused environment he's created for relaxing when not working with head cases like Larry Ellison...

Easymap
Maps made out of paper are easily damaged by excessive folding, which decreases legibility. Also, they are often very complicated to fold. Easymap helps solve these problems, because it's a city or road map printed on cloth. The textile material simplifies the handling while reading and folding, as well as extends the life span of the product.

Photography Floor Lamp
For just under $100, this floor lamp is pretty decent. I like the '40s feeling to it, as it would add a little bit of antiquity to a room.
"Retake of a 1940s studio source light, scaled anew for residential sets. Adjustable-angle brushed metal head angles light easy on the eyes with a frosted glass diffuser. Metal pole on raised X-base adjusts in height 47" to 67". Hardware included."

Hmmm cute bag I thought:
This would be super handy- a bag that adjusts to your needs depending on how much stuff you're carrying around. Plus, a 15" Laptop sleeve is included.
"Ingeniously designed, the entire bag can be folded apart and reclosed to fit whatever volume you need. Locked securely in place with super wide velcro, the water repellent Wool Felt bag can be carried a multitude of ways and its orientation can be changed with the flick of a wrist."
A pity of the pricetag: $260.00

Convertible Houses
"Make every inch in your home work harder!" and you won't have to buy a bigger one. That's both the stated and implicit premise of Convertible Houses, a book dedicated to illustrating the "principles of multipurpose living" with creative design, aggressive space planning and convertible devices. The book features 12 convertible projects in all, located in in New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Toronto, Hong Kong, Brazil and more. The houses exemplify convertible living from foldaway kitchens to foldout offices, from swiveling walls to cantilevering lofts. Hardcover, 192 pages, well illustrated, $16.47 at Amazon.
Another book added to my wish-list, as I have a tiny apartment to renovate.

Be Manos
Be manos is a new designer hotel in Brussels. 60 cosy rooms near the NMBS South.
There was opted for simplicity: all the rooms are in black and white. Lounge, restaurant and some other places were designed by contemporary Belgian designers (such as Michael Bihain). The rooms were done by the owners (family Poulgouras) themselves.
Little details like the 65 portraits hanging in the rooms and the other spaces, make the hotel really personal.
Really classy, and a true inspiration.

Design bikes
I looked and looked and looked. And looked, and looked.
And found these:
The most beautiful bike in my opinion: sleek, simple, and white. At 1300$ at Biomega.
(But apparently not available in white anymore...)
A shaft drive bicycle instead of chain (yep, you see it right, no chains)
Similar story at Beixo: Lovely design, slick, plain simple. No ugly colors.
No chain, shaft instead.
The bike is easy to fold on top of that. A perfect city bike...
But no opportunity to testdrive. You order it, pay it, and can send it back if you don't like it.
Beixo is brand new, and Dutch, and at a daring price of 648 euro, it was something I really considered.
Yet.. paying 648 euro for a bike I never sat on or even saw in real was a bit too much to try...
If not, I might have ended up with it, as it fitted my profile: a beautiful designed, easy to store, bicycle. If they would have had it in white, I would have been tempted even more.
Regarding the shaft: I still doubt. It is kind of strange we don't see it more. And when doing some research online, shaft seems to have some trouble (strange cracking sound). I also wonder if it is not harder due to some rules of physics (but I can be wrong on this one, as said I never drove one.)
(Which of course can be arranged: I am always willing to test one :) )

No more cables, no more holes
At lot of holes in your wall: that's something you don't want. Instead of mounting your sweet new flat screen plasma TV directly on your wall-discoloring your paint and drilling holes in the drywall to keep the screen up and to hide all the wires- you'd rather have an attractive TV panel, like this one from MDF Italia. MDF's panel provides a shield for your wiring and enough slots and spaces for all of your TV paraphernalia.
MDF's website contains this gem: Simplicity is a philosophy which can be applied to almost anything in life. Ten fake dollars to anyone who can tell me three things in life that can in no way be simplified.

More in: 'Duh! they're posting this now, when back in Belgium...'
Merging green living, camping, and comfortable suburban residence, Frohn &Rojas' Wall House in Santiago de Chile is a feat of both aesthetics and engineering. The small-scale home rejects traditional building approaches, providing an interesting take on the wall as a more qualitative and complex element, addressing our relationship with the outdoors, and inspiring social interactions within the home. Not to mention its super-cool and very high-tech'energy screen' typically used in greenhouse construction, which yields diffused lighting and a regulated interior climate zone.

Though I am not so much in favor of the small bikes, this one seems rather unusual and nice.
I definitely like the fact that the steering wheel is your lock.
And the bag for groceries, which seems extremely useful.
On top of it: the design isn't bad, isn't it? :)

Moo MiniStickers
MOO launches their new MiniStickers concept today and it's another awesome customizable stationary accessory. Like their other items, you can upload pictures from a Flickr, Bebo or Habbo account (or directly through their site) but this time they end up as high-quality, beautifully printed, scratch-proof stickers. The stickers are sized as 22mm squares but they pack a punch with 90 different stickers, on fifteen individual, tear-out sheets in a brightly packaged stickerbook in a color of your choice. At only $10 these will come in handy when you want to "stick" it to the man.
COOL!

A church and design...
...and you'll end up here:
I am not sure if I posted it before, but I was truly impressed when seeing this interior design. It fits well.
Now we wonder if there will be more visitors each Sunday ;)
Czech designer Maxim Velcovsky has redesigned the interior of a church in Eastern Bohemia, using customised design classics, rugs and chandeliers.
More pics in the extended post.
For the more on the church I refer to this blogpost.

Orchid
Orchid is a set of clothes-hooks, the petals bent so that articles can be hung from them. This is a product in the sphere of emotion, refinement, poetic beauty and harmony. As such, it can also be simply decorative and give rise to floral combinations.
Convinced that objects can change the world, Charlotte Lancelot tackles all their dimensions. Starting from observation and study of functions, she draws attention to the emotional well-being that they procure and the new lifestyles that they suggest. It is with subtlety and refinement that she develops her products, making them clever and poetic in her absolute commitment to meeting our requirements.
Aware that objects are a matter of desire and that we only acquire them because they speak to us and about us, Charlotte Lancelot devises creative and playful concepts around the theme of durable development, which is one of the main lines of her research. Examples of this are projects like the Embroidery carpets or the Emporte bags developed during the Looplab workshop on factory wastes and preferred materials of hers like felt and wood. We should emphasize the consistency of her approach, with as a key aspect her determination to treat objects in their entirety… from design to production, to warehousing, to sale, to being second or third hand.

Moose
Vlaemsch is a new label formed by the renowned Belgian designer, Casimir. The designs are witty, conceptual, and thought-provoking. Augustin Scott de Martinville studied at the famous local design school, Ecal. His aim is to edit each new year a series of objects that are linked to a self-imposed theme.
The first year's theme is the reinterpretation of the codes of bourgeois furniture. The Moose & Deer Head are part of this series: a modernised, somehow abstract version of the trophy head, executed in triplicate.
"We wanted something light to stress the heavy drama that is usually associated with this object - the killing of the animal and the stuffing of the head."

Maze by Arne Quinze
Beautiful doesn't necessary imply big. Allthough small in size, the MAZE table enchants everyone with it's suggestion of transparence. Viewed from above, it's almost as if you are looking trough the mesh of a net.
MAZE was born in the studio's of Arne Quinze, but its genes are of the East-MAZE means table in Hindi. There is something mysterious about it; it looks different depending on the angle you view it from. Its common sense lies in its flexibility: place it inside, in the living room or i n the bathroom, or outside, in the garden-with its plastic body.
MAZE fits in anywhere. MAZE: light, adaptive, available in white, green or black, and low maintenace.
The ideal woman actually.

Thin thinner ...
Watch out Sony, it looks like your Vaio X505's title for thinnest / lightest laptop ever is about to be challenged by some new Intel-sponsored Zima designs intended to push the envelope of portability.
I don't think this Intel Zima is a challenge for the Vaio, as the Vaio sucks (anyone will tell ya). It is a competition to an Apple Macbook.
And that is a compliment indeed.

Real people choose real design
The New York Times Home & Garden staff compiled a group of four very different people to give feedback on ICFF. While this story attempts to bridge the gap between "design" and the masses, it might do more to alienate them by focusing on the extremes of the show
And what is their choice:
Their unanimous favorite was the foam chair from Sixinch. Ms. Hayward liked that she could picture it in a traditional setting; everyone responded to how it felt, which was soft and bouncy. As for what they could imagine taking home, Ms. Hayward chose the foam chairs for her New York dining room, as did Mr. Shellman, but only in white, he said. He preferred the plain bamboo sideboard from Iannone. So did Mr. Miller, but only when pressed. “None of this is really my style,” he said.
Miss Lewy picked the green foam lounge chair, with a caveat.
“It’s for my dorm room, or my just-out-of-college room, which would feel like a house but not like a real home,” she said. “When I grow up and have a family, I don’t want my house to look like a lounge.”
A Belgian company. Ha!

Droog's Starters Box
Design 101. Similar to IKEA's popular StartBox for kitchens, Droog's Starters Box aims to supply you with the basics. In this case, the basics is a sampling of the Dutch design collective's smaller scale but iconic works...
Aargh, pretty nice present to receive.
I am pretty sure I would find it darn hard to give away that present, when buying it for someone else.
Available for purchase from DroogShop for €99.

Calendar
I noticed this calendar while surfing for some design stuff. I like it. Easy, plain simple and timeless. Apparently it was design in the sixties. How comes so many nice stuff is dating from that period (or is it just me liking those times?)
The calendar can be bought on AmbienteDirect. (I bought a lamp and storage recently, and instead of the promised 3 days it lasted around 3 weeks, but it arrived, in good shape, and certainly cheaper than in the local design shop...)

The beautifully designed series of Futiro makes you long for a skype phone even when you would not really need one...
Their words:We chose a team of world-class designers because we wanted to develop products which would lift the bar in VoIP phone design. It was and continues to be our belief, that quality design in USB phones has been largely neglected in the rush towards capturing market share.
We set out to address that deficiency. Our goal was to produce a range of VoIP phones which are functional in purpose, high quality design and not currently available anywhere else.
En plus, the Futiro series is now Mac enabled.
*Running to the on-line shop now*

Michaël Bihain
In the world of Michaël Bihain, you may see dancing shelves (Let's Dance), fruit becoming a part of our walls (Oyon) or a chair that you would never sit on (Paradise Chair).
Michael's unique and daring designs represent the vanishing point where news, lifestyle and conventional memory converge and overlap. They are his desire to design responsible furniture for free people.
Michaël studied interior design at the Institute Saint-Luc in Liege and at Hull University in England, having previously trained as a butcher and as a carpenter. He has been awarded the ‘ Aide à la création et innovation' prize, conceived the furniture for the British Council in Paris, the interior of the family museum of the English sculptor Henry Moore, develops furniture for the data-processing field for the manufacturer Chizat, design with the cigarette brand Benson cigarette & Edges private interiors in London, design jewellery for True Love, develops products with OBOEconcept and currently teaches furniture at Saint-Luc.
Some of his works are a part of the permanent collection of the design Museum of Seoul, and are regularly displayed at exhibitions in London, Paris, and Milan.
