De perfecte setup
Trouwe lezers lazen mijn enthousiasme al over mijn kleine macbook.
Dat enthousiasme is enkel vergroot na de aankoop van het 24inch scherm.
Randy Pausch sprak in zijn befaamde speech al over een tweede beeldscherm. En hoewel ik dat al had, werd het me nooit zo duidelijk als nu: je werkt er beter en gestructureerder mee.
Belangrijkste motivatie om de aankoop te verantwoorden waren: de 13inch is perfect op locatie maar om thuis te werken is een groot scherm echt wel handig. Ik merkte dit lang geleden al op met mijn 12inch. Toen waren de grafische processoren van de laptops echter niet optimaal, en de 12 inch kon de 1920*1200 px van het 2de beeldscherm niet optimaal benutten, waardoor ik thuis op een macmini werkte, en op locatie op de 12inch. Qua syncen was dit allesbehalve.
Dit is intussen veranderd: mijn macbook toont een volledig benut scherm, op native resolutie.
En hij puft er zelfs niet bij.
En ik kan eindelijk mijn Aperture ten volle benutten: beelden selecteren op een kleine portable is eenvoudig, ze bewerken gaan echter stukken gemakkelijker op een deftig scherm.
Waar vroeger mijn portable haperde op de bestanden, gaat nu ook dit fantastisch snel.
Ook syncen is een fluitje van een cent geworden: we hebben enkele usb hard disks aan onze Airport Extreme gehangen, en Time Machine doet zijn backups zonder ik er moet over nadenken.
Mijn iPhone dock (vroeger een heel gedoe om te syncen) hangt nu gewoon aan het scherm, en als ik thuis kom, de macbook aansluiten en de iPhone in de dock steek, synct alles dadelijk en perfect.
Waar ik vroeger weken asynchroon achterliep met de iPhone, kan ik nu telkens op de laatste info aan.
Mijn iPhone is bijgevolg ook eindelijk de perfecte agenda geworden.
Voor mij is deze set up schitterend: op locatie werken is perfect te doen: het 13inch scherm voldoet meer dan voldoende. Het is soms lastig als je in photoshop of dreamweaver al je paletten niet kan openzetten, maar echt last heb ik daar niet van.
Thuis heb je een echte workstation, een desktop solution die werkt.
Ik ben ervan overtuigd da de nieuwe iMacs sneller zullen werken dan deze 2.4ghz MacBook. En dat je grotere harde schijven kan hebben. Of meer ram. Grafische snelheid dus.
Want in praktische snelheid kan je niet op tegen de combo macbook + scherm.
Toegegeven, het is de zwaarte versie met 4gig ram in, en een 500gb harde schijf, us op zich een vrij zwaar machien toch...
Tenzij dan met de MacbookPro + scherm.
Maar die oplossing leek mij niet interessant, want te groot.
De nadelen: tot nu toe slechts twee dingen:
- als je van laptop naar scherm verbindt of het scherm loskoppelt, dan verandert je desktop (de daaropgeplaatste documenten staan anders gerangschikt). Je moet met andere woorden steeds al je schermen juist zetten. Een geheugen waarin staat 'op klein scherm toon je dit zo en op groot scherm zo' zou ideaal zijn. Ik vermoed dat zoiets nog komt.
- Als je de iPhone aansluit, springt iTunes steeds actief en ipv klein te blijven, vergroot het scherm en springt het naar de voorgrond. Irritant. (Misschien is dit wel een setting die ik nog niet ken..)
(Een ander nadeel was de sleepfunctie die haperde op de macbook, maar met de recente firmware update lijkt dit van de baan.)
Voor de rest: een absolute aanrader.
En ik vermoed dat ik niet de enigste ben die er zo over denkt.
Mijn setup voor de nieuwsgierigen:
Een macbook 2.4 ghz met 4gig ram, met zelf geplaatste samsung 500gb harde schijf (voor 113 euro koop je die, kost minder dan de 320 van apple zelf, en is poepsimpel in installatie)
Het 24inch scherm (led)
Airport Extreme met 3 harde schijven eraan, waarvan 1tje voor TimeMachine is voorzien.
Een bamboo tablet (A6 formaat) als muis om mijn pols te verlichten
Een usb keyboard (omdat dat een volledige number pad op staat)
iPhone 1gen 16gb. Unlocked met PwngeTool. (En neen, geen data abonnement meer: het marcheerde allesbehalve bij Proximus, en was veel te duur voor wat ik kreeg.)

Truphone, VOIP op je gsm
Nog in de categorie geeks en hun gizmo: Truphone is ook zo een app die op verschillende mobieltjes werkt, waaronder de iPhone, maar ook weer de HTC en andere smartphones.
En net daarom maakt de app de kans om het te gaan maken wat mij betreft. Het is de Skype van de mobieltjes.
Gratis bellen van telefoon naar telefoon via Truphone.
Meer nog: de app werkt sinds kort ook over het 3G netwerk.
Het grootste nadeel echter is dat de applicatie constant actief moet staan op je iphone wil je kostenloos (dus van Truphone naar Truphone user) bellen. Iets wat niet echt handig is...
Desalniettemin is het een handige oplossing voor mensen die niet steeds via de computer (en dus Skype) willen bellen. Een standalone app voor de computer of een webbased app (zoals Jajah) zou dit product wel vervolledigen. Nu kan je dus enkel naar andere mobile users bellen.
Een concurrent is trouwens Fring
Bij Fring moet je steeds betalen, en maak je gebruik van je Skype contacten.
Fring biedt ook chat aan via de meeste platformen (MSN, ...) en kan werken met SIP.
Grote dooddoener: Fring eet je iPhone batterij leeg...
iCall is dan weer een derde speler in deze markt, die helaas enkel voor de iPhone beschikbaar is (in tegenstelling tot Truphone)
Waar ze wel een grote stap voor de rest zijn is het 'switchen': je kan een gewoon telefoongesprek gemakkelijk switchen naar een iCall gesprek, waardoor de kosten verlagen.
Minpunt op dit moment: iCall kan momenteel niet gedownload worden in de App Store, omdat deze door Apple onder review is geplaatst...
Het spreekt voor zich: mobiele VOIP is in aantocht. Echte oplossingen zijn er nog niet, want telkens nog een beetje omslachtig: ondanks de mooie userinterfaces ontbreekt er toch nog iets aan ieders functionaliteit.
Maar die minpuntjes neem je er gemakkelijk bij als je bijv een buitenlands gesprek wil voeren, of zelf in een buitenland vertoeft, en geen dure telefoongesprekken wil betalen.
Je hebt niet langer je laptop en Skype nodig, of een bluetooth telefoon, je kan het gewoon via je iPhone of gsm.
Handig...
Voor je gsm-abonnement te vervangen zijn deze apps nog in een te vroeg stadium. Check ze eens binnen een 6-tal maanden zou ik zo zeggen...

Qik, lifestream
Ik dacht al dat ik erooit eens over schreef, maar toen ik Netlash Bart op BarCamp Ghent zag filmen en dan zijn coole apparaatje op een lastige manier aan zijn laptop hangen dacht ik 'uh?'
Dus Bart dit is er eentje voor jou: Qik is een gratis app die video lifestreamt met je telefoon. Jip, ook jouw vervloekte gsm :) !
Het marcheert op een hele resem toestellen. En het maffe is dat het rechtstreeks streamt naar het internet. (Ik vermoed dat Maarten Schenk hier ook wel mee opgetogen zal zijn ;) )
Heel erg handig om op events een en ander te streamen, of dingen te onthouden die je niet wil vergeten.
Wel heel erg gevaarlijk als anderen jou filmen: het komt rechtstreeks online...
Het moet gezegd, bij mijn upgrade van de iPhone was het verloren gegaan. Maar nu weer brandend actueel.
Voor iPhone geldt de immer geldende regen: hacken...
Qik vind je terug in de Cydia, waar het te vinden is onder de categorie Multimedia.
Een paar klikken en huppa: filmen maar!

Apple MacBook Unibody review
Intussen werk ik al een paar weken op mijn nieuwe MacBook Unibody, en ik heb mijn oude MacBook Pro welgeteld al 3 keer aangeraakt sindsdien. Telkens om te scannen (which reminds me: moet dringend het scanprogramma installeren...)
Wat me die zeldzame keren is opgevallen is de opvallende snelheid van de MacBook, en de ongelooflijke helderheid van het scherm. Ik verlang geen seconde terug naar de oude (en ja, ikheb gevloekt op de vorige, een MBPro 1,15ghz first gen intel...)
Wat heel erg opvalt is de stevigheid van de unibody, je hebt echt het gevoel dat je iets uit 1 stuk vast hebt. En dat voelt goed.
Tegelijk merk ik wel op dat de randjes van de Book 'teerder' zijn. Aluminium blijkt op dat vlak iets gevoeliger, en je let er best een beetje mee op om geen 'kapjes' in de rand van je laptop te krijgen.
Voor mij zijn mijn computer en mijn camera's werkelijk 'tools' en ik vervang ze dan ook na 2 jaar. Een stevig toestel is op dat vlak en must. Ik heb het gevoel dat deze unibody beter resistent is voor dergelijke gebruikers, mits enkel inspanningen van die gebruiker zelf (holt naar de winkel voor een softcase)
Minpunten:
-Het toetsenbord is nog steeds een beetje aanpassen.
-Het (de?) clickpad is even wennen door de extra functies, de click is ook iets harder/stroever. Ik vermoed dat dit loskomt naarmate het gebruik vordert. En in de zetel te werken is iets onhandiger geworden door het grotere oppervlak van het clickpad.
-De gevoelige randjes van de computer.
Pluspunten:
-Solide body. Krasbestendiger dan de vorige versies lijkt me (waar je stukken aluminiumgeverfd plastiek had), behalve dan de randjes.
-Helderheid van het scherm (het glas en/of de reflectie heeft me nog geen seconde gestoord.)
-Draagbaarheid. (Ik heb eindelijk weer een heel draagbare computer. Mensen die ooit verliefd geworden zijn op de 12inch PB van Mac weten waarover ik spreek.)
-Snelheid: het is echt een powermachine die eindelijk een paar zware programma's naast elkaar kan draaien. (2.4gh, 4gig ram.)
-De HD vervangen was een fluitje van een cent. (Ram zou dat ook moeten zijn, maar blijkbaar zijn er problemen met externe ram bij sommige gebruikers.) Ik stak een 500gb schijf en ben daar heel tevreden van.
-De draaihoek van het scherm is een pak vergroot. Heel erg handig als je snel in een zetel zit te werken.
-Mac OS X.5: solid strong aan full speed. Zalig.
Wat mij betreft een aanrader.
In combinatie met het 24inch scherm (dat in bestelling is) heb je een perfect werkstation + portable in 1.
Voor mensen die graag een kleine portable hebben, met optische schijf en krachtig genoeg om een paar zware grafische programma's te draaien is deze mac ideaal.
Mensen die video willen doen raad ik een MacBookPro aan. Op de MacBook zitten geen firewire poorten meer. Ik heb ze nog niet gemist. Maar kan balen zijn. Een voor video heb je een betere videokaart in de Pro.
Een iMac heeft een aantal voordelen op de MacBook: iets zwaardere processor, en meer schijfruimte. Door echter zelf een andere HD te steken, kom je vaak ruim toe. Een externe schijf verbonden via de usb hub in het 24inch scherm lost dat probleem op en geeft je draagbaarheid in ruil.
Voor de meeste mensen de beste oplossing, want een Macbook + 24inch scherm kost ongeveer evenveel als een zware iMac. (Opteer je voor video dan kan je best voor de iMac gaan, of voor de duurdere combo MacBookPro + 24inch scherm.)
Ervaringen met de Apple iStore: ik ben een 'shopper', ik wil stellig de goedkoopste prijs voor een toestel dat overal hetzelfde is. Dus ben ik een paar jaar terug goed beginnen vergelijken.
Ik opteerde destijds voor Macline. Met IT Pro had ik slechte ervaringen, en de iStore leek me wat vreemd 'What about service.'
Ik ben daar op teruggekomen. Alle defecte computers reizen immers naar ARC in Dilbeek, alwaar ze onder Apple garantie worden hersteld. De prijzen van de dealers zijn zelden lager dan die van de iStore, en bovendien is de iStore service wat mij betreft onberispelijk: Deze MacBook werd telefonisch besteld, en stond 4 werkdagen laten aan de deur. 2 dagen vroeger dan aangekondigd.
In een niet zo ver verleden, kocht ik op die manier een 23inch scherm, dat on arrival toekwam in een beschadigde doos. Toen ik het toestel aanzette was er sprake van een 'onregelmatige verdeling van licht'. Eén telefoontje later stond er een nieuwe 24inch aan de deur, en werd de 'oude' 2 dagen later opnieuw opgepikt.
Bij defecte computers rijd ik zelf even naar Dilbeek, waar ik aankan op een onberispelijke service op vaak een paar dagen tijd. (Bij mij steeds onder garantie gebeurd.)
Een zelfde verhaal bij dealers leidt vaak tot andere scenario's. De computer blijft een paar dagen hangen op hun buro, waarna hij in Dilbeek terecht komt, in de rij, en 2 weken later heb je je toestel terug.
(Niet alle dealers zijn zo, me dunkt. Van een collega hoorde ik van ODleanor.be in Gent. Deze zou een snelle service aanbieden bij defecte computers, aan een degelijke prijs.)
Weet trouwens dat je als student of docent kan genieten van educatieve kortingen. (Apple Edustore) Vraag er zeker naar bij je dealer als je toch voor offline opteert.
Sommige scholen hebben betere condities dan andere. Vraag ernaar in je school.
Sinds kort heeft Apple ook hun BizStore online. (vroeger kon je enkel telefonisch bestellen om een factuurtje te bekomen.)

Mooie nieuwe portable? Bescherm jezelf
Net als veel andere las ik het verhaal van Nick.
Portable gestolen... Je denkt steeds 'Mij overkomt het niet'.
Ik kan je vertellen: het overkomt je wel.
Ik heb een paar dingen gestolen gehad (groot en klein) en de keer dat er in ons appartement werkelijk alles van waarde wegwas, behalve die ene harde schijf die ze over het hoofd gezien hadden, maken dat je anders aankijkt tegen die dingen.
(Ik zal mijn camera altijd in het oog hebben en op events als Barcamp (ja zelfs Barcamp) of plaatsen waar ik in opdracht dien te fotograferen, mijn gerief altijd dicht bij mij hebben.)
Desalniettemin zijn er een paar tools die je helpen je computer beter te beveiligen. Een backup thuis. Een lock. Een verzekering (enkel interessant het eerste jaar, daarna dodelijk duur.). Maar ook trackingtools.
Undercover is er zo eentje en is zijn geld meer dan waard. Het programma laat je weten wanneer de dief de computer ergens aansluit (ervan uitgaande dat ze de HD niet direct herformatteren, maar dit is meestal niet het geval, gezien de dief zelden een Mac install schijf heeft.)
Bovendien zal het foto's maken met de ingebouwde camera en die ook versturen om zo beelden te hebben van de dader.
En on top of that, als men niet verbindt met het internet zal het programma een hardware failure simuleren, opdat de 'nieuwe eigenaar' naar de winkel moet, en, de man die herstelt, hopelijk eerlijker is dan de dief.
Nog een paar sidetips:
-Als je toestel gestolen is, ga dan zeker online checken bij 2dehands en ebay ed. Met een beetje geluk vind je daar iets terug.
-Als je camera gepikt werd, ga dan naar de shops die tweedehands verkopen. Ik heb zelf in een camerashop gewerkt en heb genoeg mensen zien binnenkomen die te louche waren om dergelijke apparatuur zelf te hebben.
Winkeleigenaars hebben baat bij de dief aan te geven, gezien het strafbaar is gestolen dingen te verkopen. Desalniettemin helpt het zeker als je dan al langsgeweest bent. Je bent dan plots geen anonieme 'toerist' meer, wel een fotograaf op zoek naar zijn toestel. Believe me. It makes a difference.
-Geef zeker je serienr door aan de verdeler (Apple, Canon, Nikon, ...): bij reparaties vinden ze je apparatuur dan terug.
Op voorhand:
-Disable Autmatic Logon: je bent je computer dan misschien wel kwijt, de nieuwe eigenaar kan tenminste niet aan je data aan.
-Om je toestel te 'branden' kan je op het loginwindow je gegevens zetten.
Dat doe je zo:
Pas de file aan in /Library -> Preferences -> com.apple.loginwindow.plist (doe dit als superuser), en voeg hetvolgende toe na de eerste <dict> tag:
<key>LoginwindowText</key>
<string>Your text goes here...</string>
Deze 'Text' wordt toegevoegd onder het Mac OS X logo telkens je in- of uitlogt.
Je schrijft best iets als 'Deze machine behoort toe aan ...'

Dit kaartje lijkt me telkens verdomd handig: snel wireless de foto's binnenhalen uit de camera zonder dat je moet een kabel zoeken.

Retweet: Zwarte vrijdag ziet er heerlijk uit.
In de States heb je zoiets als 'Black Friday', de dag dat de koopjes voor nieuwjaar beginnen. Traditioneel zijn er op die dag, en enkel op die dag ongelooflijke koopjes te doen.
Apple doet die dag gedurende 48uur van 'koopjes'. Al een paar jaar kon ik op die manier wel teen of tander te pakken krijgen aan -20% zoals een airport express, een ipod, ...
Dit jaar hou ik mijn vingers gekruist voor dat nieuwe 24inch scherm.
Friday is the day!
Update: volgens de Australische site weten we al aan wat we ons kunnen verwachten: 160 dollar korting op de Macbook (ja, ik heb te vroeg gekocht..), 60 dollar van de iMac, 50 dollar van die BoseDock, een Lacie Rugged met 44dollar korting, EyeTV Deluxe min 60dollar, en talloze andere dingen. En natuurlijk kortingen op de iPods.

Updaten HD Macbook
Jip, eentje voor de geeky lezers.. Dus skippen als je daartoe niet behoort! ;)
Toen ik besloot de nieuwe MacBook te bestellen wou ik de snelst mogelijke computer. 4GB ram, en een HD upgrade.
De upgrade naar 320GB voor 90 euro was interessant, edoch, waarom kon het niet meer zijn?
Met een beroep als fotografe en designer heb je al snel grote files aan je been (zeker met RAW formaten), en dan zit je al snel te vloeken.
Mijn vorige HD was 80. 30 daarvan was al opgesoepeerd door het systeem, 7 moet noodzakelijk vrij blijven om het systeem goed te laten draaien. Draai nog een Photoshop met wat virtueel geheugen, en je snapt al snel waarover ik spreek.
Dus als 500Gb kan, dan zou het 500 worden. Met camera's die 21milj pixel beelden uitspuwen en de constante evolutie van meer, wil ik deze notebook binnen 2 jaar toch nog vlot zien marcheren.
Na een beetje research bleek de grootst mogelijke HD voor een portable 500gig te zijn. En die past in de MacBook.
Op Pixmania te vinden voor een luttele 93 btw ex.
De schijf in de Mac steken ging als een fluitje van een cent. Ik geef toe, het is de eerste keer dat ik zelf zoiets deed, en ware het niet dat Apple het duidelijk aangaf dat dit eenvoudig werd, ik zou er niet aan begonnen zijn.
Maar het is echt simpel.
iFixit legt alles goed uit hoe te demonteren, en MacInstruct is daar om verder ta gaan met de install.
De engiste moeilijkheid die ik tegenkwam was het ontbreken van 1 noodzakelijke schroevendraaier: een Torckx T6. Ik ben er half Gent voor afgelopen (avoid Gamma!) en vond het uiteindelijk bij Koen, de gereedschapswinkel aan Sluizeken, voor 8 euro. Zorg er ook voor dat je zo een klein setje schroevendraaiers hebt, want dat heb je zeker ook nodig.
Meer is er niet nodig: je harde schijf, 1 vijsje losdraaien, de schijf vervangen, 4 vijsjes wisselen om de HD goed vast te zetten, alles terugklikken, en je computer opstarten met de opstartschijf erin. HD formatteren, Leopard installeren. En voila...
Een Macbook met de vitesse en de ruimte van een desktop.
I like.
Nu hopen dat Apple vrijdag het 24inch scherm wat in de solden zet...

Wishlish #3: Wacom Tablet Bamboo
Deze A6 Wacomtablet is perfect om van start te gaan met een Tablet ipv de muis. Perfect voor kleine maar nauwkeurige foto-bewerkingen (zoals bijgeven en tegenhouden, of stempelen) in je favoriete foto-programma. Ik wil er al lang eentje proberen, maar het is er nog nooit van gekomen omdat ik meestal op de Macbook werk. Nu is er echter een 24inch scherm besteld, en wil ik nauwkeurig kunnen werken. Een tablet lijkt me handig om sneller en nauwekeuriger te kunnen werken.
De Wacom tablet is te koop bij Pixmania aan 69 euro

Camera's en resultaten
Lees er vooral mee over hier.
Bekijk zeker vooral de opsplitisngen (Color Depth, Dynamic Range en Low Light Iso) want die verklaren veel. Als je voor low light gaat is het duidelijk Nikon die de kroon draagt, en voor Color Depth Canon. Dynamic range is verrassend.
Benieuwd waar de Canon 5D Mark II gaat belanden (want die zit nog niet in het lijstje).

Rugsack
Nog in de reeks interessante fototassen is de Shapeshifter van ThinkThank.
Het idee is simpel maar geniaal: een fotozak die wanneer de fotograaf zijn gear gebruikt, leeg is, en dus minder plaats inneemt. Net het probleem dat ik aanhaalde in mijn vorige post met de rugzak van Delsey: te lomp en te groot.
De ShapeShifter kan een 17inch MacBookPro huizen en 2 bodies, bijhorende lenzen en een flash.
Het materiaal zit ook niet in de typische 'kotjes' maar wel in kleine neopreen zakjes. Heel erg handig is dat, als je de zak dus opendoet er niet stante pede alles kan uit donderen.
Je voelt ook dadelijk aan dat deze zak is gemaakt vanuit de vraag van fotojournalisten, en bijgevolg een beter startpunt is dan dat van de fabrikanten.
Het vervult een werkelijke nood. Niemand wil graag in zijn reportage rondsleuren met zijn fotozakken. (Ook ik heb dat talloze malen voor, en zoek dan een veilig plekje indien mogelijk.)
De Shapeshifter komt maar uit rond eind 2008, met een adviesprijs van 250$.

MovableType vs Wordpress
Ik blog al zeer lang (sinds 2003). MovableType zat nog maar in zijn eerste versies toen ik het installeerde (en veel bijleerde over mySQL en CGI en zo van die dinges. Gewoon, net genoeg om te weten hoe ik het moest installeren..) Daarvoor zat ik op een modified forum, want zo ergens ter wereld kunnen inloggen en een berichtje sturen was wel heel leuk.
Maar bon, MovableType dus, een van de eerste blogplatformen, een hell to install, maar het lukte, en veel vijven en zessen later wist ik ook wat divs waren (MT had immers ingebouwde templates die al op CSS gebaseerd waren.) en had ik een fantastische tool om mijn site te onderhouden.
MT installeren bleef een hassle, maar omdat ik hondstrouw ben, en behoorlijk content van het systeem, bleef ik het gebruiken. Ik vond bovendien de UI van MT pakken handiger dan de eerste WP UI's.
Het onderhuids systeem van de 2 is helemaal anders (ik vertel wellicht niets nieuw voor de meesten onder jullie, maar bon): het ene published HTML pagina's, en doet dit telkens opnieuw, de andere maakt pagina's on the fly, in php.
Wordpress groeide in de afgelopen jaren tot een supersysteem, eenvoudig te installeren, eenvoudig themes voor te schrijven, en ik had me bijna laten verleiden om mijn systeem over te zetten naar WP.
Bijna.
Want WP, dat verandert om de 5 voet, een upgrade om de maand, en dat betekent dat je telkens mee mag upgraden. Behoorlijk wat werk, waar ik echt niet om gevraagd heb.
Ik bedoel: ik installeer een cms om me niet met het systeem te moeten bekommeren maar gemakkelijk dingen te kunnen posten op een website. NOT! Bij Wordpress mag je behoorlijk veel tijd steken in het upgraden van het systeem (en dat van anderen die je beheert) en daarenboven op je vingers kruisen dat je geinstalleerde theme niet 'breekt' onder de upgrade.
Maar de belangrijkste reden was toch wel dat liefje's blog gehackt werd een tijdje terug. Zonder meer.
Waarbij ik bij mijn weten geen vreemde files heb laten staan (bij een sommige software moet je achteraf de install file weghalen voor veiligheid.) Neen, want wordpress dat is een 5min install, die doet dat niet.
Gehackt worden dat is vies, heel vies. Want, na het kuisen van de files, de vieze code weggefilterd te hebben, bleek dat die vuile Russen ergens toch nog controle hadden over het systeem. Opnieuw gekuist, en voorlopig ziet het ernaar uit dat alles in orde is. That is... Ik moet haar theme volledig opnieuw schrijven om de admin goed te laten werken.
Om die miserie te vermijden is MT schitterend: een 2.1 versie werkt nog steeds perfect en zonder morren.
Maar het hoeft niet gezegd dat een 2.1 versie niet de features heeft van de 3.0 of de 3.1.
Dat Wordpress op dat vlak stukken verder staat.
Dat WYSIWYG bij MT maar werkt met een plugin, en dat het op dat vlak een pak lomper is.
Een upgrade naar het nieuwe systeem is dus aan de orde.
En alleen daar wringt het schoentje...
Movabletype installeren, dat is precies nog moeilijker geworden dan vroeger.
Misschien omdat ik vergelijk met wordpress dat dat in 5 minuten doet.
Maar de hele mikmak uploaden, database activeren, info invoeren en naar de install file gaan resulteert na 3 uur enkel in een 'error'. (Ik geef grif toe, ik ben geen wonder in die dingen, maar ftpen, database activeren en diens meer, heb ik intussen al vaak genoeg gedaan.)
Vloeken dus.
Want nu ligt de keuze tussen: Wordpress (lees, easy install, maar de zekerheid dat ik elke so-so mag upgraden) of MT (en de zekerheid dat het wreed lastig gaat zijn die te installeren.)

Nikon en oude lenzen.
Gisteren naar de MediaMarkt, om een kadootje voor het leifje, en er op tijd aangedacht een oude manuele lens (waarvan ik er wel een stuk of 5 liggen heb) mee te nemen, om te kijken wat dat geeft op een D700.
Ik had de D700 al eerder in mijn handen, in een niet nader te omschrijven winkel, alwaar de mens wel verschrikkelijk vriendelijk was, maar precies ook verschrikkelijk vol goesting om zelf dat toestel te mogen vasthouden.
De conversatie ging alsvolgt:
Erhm, kan dit toestel ook dit?
'Ja, maar u moet dit knopje zo zetten' (neemt toestel uit mijn handen)
Ok, dat snap ik dan, en hte kan dan met oude lenzen werken? (neemt toestel terug)
'Ja, dat is een instelling in het menu' (neemt toestel uit mijn handen)
Super, dat wil ik dan graag eens testen (neemt toestel terug)
En zo ging dat 5 minuten door.
Waarna het bijna uit mijn handen gerukt werd om snel terug in de kast te zetten.
Dus met meer hoop vertrok ik naar MediaMarkt.
De D700 was niet binnen 'Ze hebben problemen met de aanlevering van die toestellen'
Jip, kan ik begrijpen, ziet er verdorie een goed toestel uit.
'Maar de D90 heeft eigenlijk wel dezelfde features, dus u mag gerust die testen met de lens.'
En hij koppelde het toestel van het vervelende draadje los, en liet me vrij fotograferen.
Fantastisch was dat: de oude lenzen werken gewoon op de D90 (en dus ook D700 neem ik aan)
Lenzen van de jaren 70/80 op een nieuw toestel.
Mooie lenzen ook, manuele met grote diafragma openingen. Die fullframe gewoon zijn wat ze zijn.
En wat meer is, waar vroeger die lenzen wel werkten maar geen electronische info meegaven (en je dus een manuele lichtmeter nodig had, wat ze vrij 'moeilijk bruikbaar' maakten) gaat dat nu wel.
Ok, je moet manueel of met diafragmavoorkeur werken. Maar laat dat nu net de 2 dingen zijn die ik super vind.
Voor het eerst in de afgelopen 6 jaar had ik terug het gevoel dat het was zoals vroeger*, toen het toestel het verlengde was van mezelf, waarbij alles vloeiend en automatisch gebeurde: diafragma juist (aan de lens!), scherpte juist, het moment bekijken en kiezen.
En adrenaline die door je lijf stroomt.

Schitterend.
De D700 heeft geen filmfunctie, maar of dat opweegt tegen het gevoel de camera terug volledig onder controle te hebben betwijfel ik op dit ogenblik...
Er moet natuurlijk toegevoegd dat ik de 5D wel al in mijn 'pollekes' heb gehad, edoch, echt testen kon je dat ook niet noemen. (Bovenstaand is ook niet echt een test, me dunkt)
En dat er blijkbaar een ander 'kanon' onderweg is naar dit adres. Ook een full frame, die ik 14 dagen mag vasthouden.
De bespreking daarvan lees je dan wel wanneer we terug zijn van NYC.
*Vroeger is zeker niet altijd beter, maar het valt me toch op dat ik de afgelopen weken een paar gesprekken gehad heb met mensen die net als ik, in een analoog tijdperk hun studies genoten, en dat ze allen vermeldden: geef mij maar zo een camera zoals toen, maar dan digitaal.
De M8.2 van Leica is daar het beste voorbeeld van: een identieke body als hun oude M3, maar ipv film, bits en bytes. Al 50 jaar een (bijna) zelfde body. Schitterend.
Persoonlijk vind ik niet dat de bodies de laatste jaren zo sterk verbeterd zijn.
Voor mij is dat dan: "Geef mij maar een FM2, maar digitaal. Ik koop em met mijn ogen dicht."

Canon 5D MarkII
Gisteren naar de fijne event geweest van Canon, en de nieuwe Canon 5D Mark II als een van de weinigen mogen vasthouden en testen in Europa.
De foto's staan hier nog te blinken op het kaartje en ik hoop ze binnenkort op deze blog te kunnen posten (beetje tijdsgebrek nu)
Ik kan u alvast zeggen: ik was heel zwaar onder de indruk van de hogere ISO waarden, iets waar ik danig van geniet als 'niet zo enthousiast flitser'. Ook de geluidsloosheid, en de vitesse van het scherpstellen waren impressionnant.
Het was een beetje teveel van het goeie wel: meer dan 2 handvol fotografen en 1 Canon 5D.
Maar ook een overvloed aan schoon lenzen, de laatste nieuwe andere toestellen, en niet weten waar te kijken. Fotografen die fotografen shooten, en schoon modellen die soms een beetje in het niets verdwenen bij die andere modellen, de toestellen zelf.

Dell & the mini pc
Dat je als Apple user van design houdt, is een feit, en dat je tegenwoordig danig op de proef wordt gesteld ook...
Dell blijft maar mooie dingen presenteren.
Ik was een gelukkig gebruiker van een powerbook 12inch indertijd. Een machtig klein maar sterke notebook, die overal meeging. De 12 inch was nooit te zwaar of te lomp. Eens thuis sloot ik em aan op groot scherm, en hoppa, de luxe van veel pixels.
Toen kreeg ik een Macbook Pro van het werk, en 2 laptops was wat teveel van het goeie.
Ik verlang nog steeds naar de compactheid van die 12inch, maar Apple lijkt mijn gebeden niet te verhoren...
Dell intussen komt met de Mini op de proppen. Een 8,9 inch scherm voor ultieme draagbaarheid.
Misschien iets te klein voor wat ik nodig heb, maar zeker een mooie oplossing voor mensen die veel onderweg zijn en vooral van office dingen doen.

En vooral: een beginprijs van 349$
Heimelijk hoop ik dat Apple volgende maand een tegenhanger uitbrengt...

Mooi design
Een poepsjieke computer voor een prijsje (hoewel ie aardig oploopt als je begint bij te bouwen...).
Apple in een pc-sausje, en op het eerste zicht smaakt het naar meer.
Dell gooit met de Studio Hybrid een mooie dektop op de markt, die naar idee misschien wel lijkt aan te leunen bij de Mac Mini's, naar design zijn ze een eigen weg ingeslagen. En het is er eentje die er mag zijn.
Ik zou zowaar een pc desktop op mijn buro willen zetten...

Met een paar collega's van het werk zijn we naar een Adobe 'Train the Trainer' opleiding geweest. En hoewel we een papier hebben moeten tekenen dat we van alle nieuwe features in Adobe CS4 nog niets mogen lossen, is het natuurlijk niet fout het te hebben over een paar dingen die nu reeds beschikbaar zijn voor iedereen.
Acrobat.com is er zo eentje.
Ik kende het niet echt, en wou het toch wel aanraden om 1 welbepaalde functie: 'Adobe ConnectNow'.
Screensharing is een ding dat vaker en vaker voorkomt, maar de meeste platformen bieden oplossingen aan die platformafhankelijk zijn. Apple's mooie oplossing binnen iChat bijv. Op pc zijn er ook talloze mogelijkheden, de een al wat beter dan de andere. En hoewel men in alle specs wel zegt dat je cross-platform kan sharen, vanzelfsprekend zijn er dan een paar extra moeilijkheden ingebouwd.
Daarom was het zo aangenaam Adobe's gratis feature te zien: platformonafhankelijk sharen.
Iedereen kent het wel eens: de ouders die weer eens vastzitten met de computer, en over de telefoon om hulp vragen. Of, de klant die niet verstaat wat precies ie moet doen in zijn cms, dan kan het eenvoudig met deze applicatie. Meer nog, de klant hoeft in se niets te installeren! En laat dat nu iets heel erg handig blijken.
Op het eerste zicht lijkt het alsof je enkel kan meevolgen op andermans computer, maar de computer van die klant/papa/tante overnemen is wel degelijk mogelijk.
Naast het gewone sharen, ze laten meekijken bij jou of omgekeerd, kan er dus een screen overgenomen worden, kunnen er annotations gemaakt worden op het scherm (notes zoals in een pdf zeg maar), maar ook de interactie via webcam, ingebouwde mic, en de eenvoudige chat zijn voor handen.
De VOIP heeft helaas nog een grote vertraging, waardoor de telefoon erbij nemen toch nog steeds een pak handiger zal lijken.
Adobe Buzzword, en Create Pdf zijn mijn ogen nogal overbodig: een online texteditor vind ik persoonlijk nogal onnodig, daarenboven zijn er er talloze alternatieven. En Create een PDF zit ingebouwd in mac, voor pc zijn er genoeg eenvoudige plugins.
Share en My Files vind ik dan wel weer handig. Ook hier zijn er veel eenvoudige alternatieven, toch lijkt de Acrobat software een aantal pluspunten aan te bieden:
1. de kans is klein dat dit alternatief verdwijnt bij gebrek aan investeerders (ivm bijv een box.net of TeamViewer of dergelijke)
2. er is de mogelijkheid om bepaalde documenten met geselecteerde mensen te delen, op een eenvoudige manier. (terug via een eenvoudige link, de gebruiker hoeft geen Acrobat account aan te maken)
3. mensen zullen snel vertrouwd zijn met de interface, gezien andere bedrijven dit misschien ook zullen gaan gebruiken
4. het is gratis.
5. er is ook een gratis (Air based) Desktop Toepassing voor beide platformen, waardoor snel uploaden handig wordt, en op de achtergrond gebeurt.
Adobe heeft duidelijk de hint van de gebruiker begrepen, en heeft zich toegespitst op eenvoudige en vooral handige, tot in de puntjes uitgewerkte, applicaties voor kantoorgebruikers.
Ze hebben heel goed door wat de toekomst op dat vlak zal brengen; nl. werken op afstand, en de noodzaak toch te kunnen communiceren alsof men toch in een zelfde kantoor zit.
En dat (voorlopig) allemaal gratis.

Email newsletters: the horror
Wie af en toe eens een html nieuwsletter moet maken kent het fenomeen: true horror. Waar we bij gewone sites al blij mogen zijn dat we op 4 platformen moeten testen (ie 6, ie7, mozilla en safari) is het bij nieuwsbrieven nog een pak leuker met de verschillende clients, om nog maar te zwijgen van gmail en consoorten.
Campaignmonitor maakte een aardige test voor CSS considerability, en publiceert de resultaten. En die zijn helaas bedroevend (ook weer door diezelfde gmail ondermeer.)
Je gaat er zowaar terug naar het web van 97, met toeters en tabellen...
Wie het toch met css wil doen, allen naar Campaignmonitor.
Korte samenvatting voor wie gee zin heeft in het artikel: test je html mails nooit in mac mail, want die ondersteunt lekker alles. Test in gmail, en huil...
Mooi om te zien is dat Outlook 07 veel fouten van zijn oudere broertje heeft weggewerkt, windows mail nog een stap verder gaat, en nu een mooi gemiddelde wordt.

Update: de mijne is intussen ook 'geupgradet', en ik ben 'wreed content'.
Het was poepsimpel (maar ik raad u een mac aan, pc blijkt niet zo eenvoudig te zijn) en alles staat er binnen het kwartier op.
Missing: MMS, Videorecorder, SimplifyMedia, VOIP, en de immens leuke foto app die foto's vervormt.
In de plaats gekregen: Shozu, Wordpress poster, en de New York Times.
De rest volgt wel zeker?
Nu nog een goedkoop data abonnement...

Samen tegen Global Warming...
Virtuele aardbei planten enzo, ben zeker dat dat de opwarming van de aarde tegenhoudt ;)
Gelukkig doen mijn lief en ik van andere 'echtere' dinges. Gematigd (hej, we zijn geen freaks..) en soms eenvoudig: meer binnenlandse groenten, minder tonijn, geen ijsberen :P
Samen tegen de opwarming van de aarde dus.
Jip, die Strawberry invite is gewoon de vuilbak in gebonjourd.
Facebook, voor mij mogen dat functionele dinges zijn, die aan vrienden, familie, en verre kennissen en oude klasgenoten weergeven wat mijn interesses zijn, of waar ik mee bezig ben.
(Virtueel aardbeien kweken is niet bepaald een hobby.)

iPhone 3g: Mobistar, Proximus of Base kiezen?
Met de lancering van de iPhone in Belgie rijzen er een paar vragen.
De phone is unlocked (je kan er dus op alle netwerken mee terecht), maar welk netwerk is het goedkoopste?
Het is nog te vroeg om een echte definitieve vergelijking te maken, aangezien er een paar operatoren wellicht nieuwe tarieven zullen voorstellen in een nabije toekomst.
Desalniettemin kunnen er een aantal dingen opgesomd worden.
Als je enkel wil bellen, en surfen via het ingebouwde wifi, dan maakt het niet uit welk netwerk je kiest.
Alle netwerken hebben hieromtrent hun eigen tarieven, en iedereen kiest vrij. Een goeie gids is hier: Aanbieders.be
Wil je echter surfen met de iPhone via Edge of 3G dan hebben we de volgende tips:
De iPhone heeft 3G ingebouwd, dit is momenteel de snelste vorm van internetten over de telefoon (buiten wifi), en hiervoor heb je een data-abonnement nodig.
Edge is ook een vorm van internet, weliswaar trager.
Standaard staat internetten met de iPhone niet geactiveerd.
Hiervoor dien je een paar parameters in te geven,en, opgelet: een tarief te kiezen bij je provider.
Je neemt dus best steeds contact met je telefoonoperator om niet voor onaangename verrassingen komen te staan.
De meeste operatoren hebben immers een standaard 'basis' functie geactiveerd, waarmee je, na het invoeren van je gegevens, wel kan surfen maar aan belachelijk hoge tarieven.
De tarieven voor het buitenland zijn ook steeds ontzettend duur, zelfs mét een data abonnement. Surfen op een skipiste is niet je beste idee ;)
Een gewaarschuwd man..
Base:
ondersteunt slechts het tragere Edge (onderbenut dus de capaciteiten van je 3G iPhone).

Base heeft voorlopig geen tarief dat een telefoonabo met data combineert.
Instellingen:

Gebruikersnaam: base

Conclusie:
De tarieven van Base zijn gemiddeld (in het Belgische telefoonlandschap!) niet duur. Je internetpagina/email zal echter niet supersnel inladen, gezien Base geen 3G ondersteunt.
Proximus
Proximus ondersteunt wel 3G. Je surft dus een pak sneller.

Update 14 augustus 2008:
Proximus kondigde enkele nieuwe tarieven aan met tijdelijke voordelen.
De zijn moeilijk te vergelijken met de iPhone tarieven van Mobistar, en dat zal wel niet zonder reden zijn.
Een nieuw tarief voor Business Users is er nog niet.
Het is duidelijk dat de dienst beter in een pakket zit, want voor 200mb data zonder het smile abo betaal je maar liefst 20 euro terwijl het in het abo voor 5 zit.
Instellingen:
APN: internet.proximus.be
Gebruikersnaam: geen
Paswoord: geen
Conclusie:
Mobiel internet bij Proximus gaat snel, want zij bezitten momenteel het 3G netwerk met de grootste dekking van het land maar komt aan een dure prijs.
Voorlopig is internetten bij Proximus enkel een extra optie en voorlopig worden er geen pakketten voorgesteld met bellen en internetten.
Wij hopen dat Proximus binnenkort nieuwe tarieven voorstelt, waarin betere voorwaarden worden aangeboden.
Mobistar
Mobistar lanceert de iPhone in Belgie, en hoewel ze niet de grootste 3G dekking van België hebben, is hun coverage in de grote steden meer dan behoorlijk.
Mobistar heeft naast hun optie 'internet&mail' met de iPhone lancering ook een speciale reeks abonnementen gelanceerd.
De gewone tarieven voor consumer en business vindt je hieronder en hier, hier
De nieuwe iPhone tarieven staan nog niet online maar zijn alsvolgt:
30€: 3 uur beltijd, 300 sms, 200MB data
45€: 6 uur beltijd, 600 sms, 500MB data
65€: 9 uur beltijd, 900 sms, 1GB data
en een zakelijk abonnement: kost €25 euro excl. BTW met 1u beltijd en 1GB dataverkeer.
Minimum duur abonnement 24 maanden
Deze info staat wellicht later vandaag hier online.
Instellingen:

Username: mobistar
Paswoord: mobistar

Conclusie:
Mobistar biedt een aantal opties aan, maar hun nieuwe abonnementen hebben voor ieder wat wils.
Ze zijn niet ongelooflijk goedkoop, maar je kan gerust op je huidige factuur bekijken welke optie het beste is voor jou. Ze komen wel met een contract van 2 jaar wat jammer is.
Algemene conclusie
Mobiel internetten in Belgie is nog steeds veel te duur, in vergelijking met andere landen.
Niet alleen is de prijs van de iPhone een van de hoogste in Europa, dit wordt niet gecompenseerd in de data-abonnementen.
Proximus is duidelijk de duurste speler in het veld, die hopelijk in de nabije toekomst geen kansen laat liggen, en een betere formule voorstelt, zeker gezien het feit zij de beste dekking aanbieden.

Wordpress hacked
Thanks to Bart, who noticed the hack, I was very 'happy' spending some hours on updating someone's site. I admit: the update was needed, yet one would think WordPress was not 'that' unsafe...
The reason why I postponed it was definitely the fact that 2.5 would break my K2 based theme, which it did (the Dashboard is still not reachable at the moment due to this problem)
I thought upgrading would fix my 'we were hacked' problem.
But it didn't.
Fortunately there is google, resulting in some wise words: Robert Galoppini explained it a bit closer, and I knew which files I didn't upgrade (my content + theme folder), localizing the problem pretty fast.
In the header.php I found a weird script.
I deleted it, which resulted in a clean blog.
The hacking-script, basically adding pr0n sites with a display:none, was not particularly well done, since the outcome did appear in rss-readers (the display:none gets ignored in rss), but yet very effective.
I am writing this to make you aware: Wordpress sites do get hacked.
And my lesson learned: even if it causes some problems, don't forget to upgrade once in a while...

Geeky talk: when your mac freezes upon restart
Ok, this is what happened: my girlfriend's mac froze after restarting from Vista to Apple.
Grey screen, loading bar. Nothing.
Here's what was in my mind 'ooooooooh no, she's gonna kill me.'
Several restarts later nothing happened, yet I always heard the startup sound (which is a good sign, believe me.)
Meanwhile: almost heart-attack and on the verge of fainting, and a girlfriend that got closer home by the minute...
So I decided to try a different way: open with alt, decide to choose Windows partition instead of the mac. It started up!!!!. SO I closed it down and restarted. And waited, and waited. And it worked!!!
So for all of you in fear of your girlfriend killing you: stay calm, there is hope.
Now excuse me, I have to go and backup a computer. Just in case this happens again with a fatal error...

A new firefox and a new Piclens...
...both blading fast.
I installed both a while ago, but their recent updates definitely are more than welcome.
I dropped Firefox a while ago due to it lazy attitude on my mac (sloooooooooow) and piclens on Safari wasn't a big deal. Yet I seriously consider going back.
It's certainly nice to see how both got so much better, bringing browsing to a new level and speed.

ince it is Firefox Download Day 2008, I'd recommend you to download it.
Not only is it the best 'spreading campaign' ever for a browser (what a marketing), it's simply so much better than IE, one should not hesitate to install it :)
Piclens also surprised me in a nice way. While gaining speed, it also gained some features. You now can browse Amazon, amongst others (Flickr, Google, YouTube,...)
A pity their Safari counterpart is still not that perfect...

update: iPhone & Belgium & opinion
There are many ways to blow up a good marketing campaign, but the price for screwing up best goes to Mobistar.
After Apple announced the iPhone loud and clear, also for Belgium, soon things changed a bit from launch on July 11th, to launch unknown.
Also prices: unknown.
How hard can it be to announce a cristal clear price? I am sure they had enough time to think that over.
I hope for most 'longers' that Veerle hasn't it right, meaning that it will take a while before iPhones show up over here.
Why do I use the iPhone?
Uh? For calling?
Can't you use a normal phone for that?
Of course , but this one is much cuter, and a lot user friendly. Try to open an adressbook in your normal phone, or try to add a person, or even worse, open your settings.
I also like the fact I can easily sync my contacts and my agenda, not to forget, the UI is very simple and for that reason I like to take pictures with it.
It is much easier than on my former phone.
Would you buy a new iPhone?
I don't think I need a new one now. What does it add? 3G, but with the current Belgian data plans, it feels like my pockets are being emptied.
For the GPS, this dataplan is also needed as it uses Google Maps for GPS.
Maybe if they'd add TomTom, and I wouldn't need data, I'd be tempted. If there would have been a better camera, I would have been interested too.
Anyhow, I don't believe in the 200$ price. This will never be the case in Belgium, because we are not allowed to sell packages. (*Note, in Italy an untied 8GB costs 499, a 16GB 569.)
And next to that the OS will be upgraded for all phones, so I'll get the same phone, but without 3G and a GPS.
My further remarks: we know my opinion on 3G and seriously, the plans are way too expensive in Belgium..
So that leaves me to the GPS, which is actually interesting.
But... why did Steve Jobs compare the 3G with the N95, and he didn't do this with the GPS? Simply because it isn't faster.
And thus, it is pretty useless, as we already know the GPS in the N95 is bullsh*t. According to Bart, it is good when walking in the streets, but not very useful in the car.
As I understand it doesn't take the signal well. So it simply isn't strong enough (probably because it would drain batteries too fast.)
I don't understand why Apple decided to put a lousy GPS in the iPhone. They could have put a good 5MP camera instead of a bad GPS.
They could have enabled 3rd parties to make a good GPS receiver. (like many others did)
And put TomTom inside of it, instead of the Google - I need a dataplan- Maps.
My conclusion:
-3G at too high prices
-Lousy GPS
-Still 2MP camera
-Ugly black back
-And a free update to iPhone 2.0 for old phones
So here at home, we're pretty happy with our old (i)phones ;) and stick a little longer to it.

5 simple no-nonsense SEO rules to follow
First of all don't be fooled by SEO professionals. 95% of the offers are scam. The rest are serious professionals, but unless you are running a million dollar business you don't need them. Just follow these 5 suggestions and you can be sure you've done everything you can to rank high in Google.
- Include the keywords in your domain name, page title and h1 article title. So for example if you want to sell squirrel food, register the domain squirrelfoodforsale.com. Include the keywords Squirrel Food in the page title and h1 article title. Include the same keywords in the body copy as well, but don't overdo it. Just make it natural.
- Make sure as many related sites link you as possible. Not only the link has to include your keywords but the title of the article linking you should include it too. So if petfood.com links your site from the article Feeding your squirrel then you've got a valuable link.
- Use Analytics and AdSense on your page, so Google can monitor the traffic of your site and make sure many people visit your page.
- Update your site and page often. Google gives priority to content that has been updated within a week for obvious reasons.
- Avoid links from spam and fake sites. You can get blacklisted easily and you will do more harm with such links than good.
Don't spend too much time on SEO, working on your product is time better spent, because there is nothing better than being linked organically.

HardDisk Trouble
Grumblll. Like many others I happened to had a failing Hard Drive. I am lucky: I managed to get it working again, and at the time speaking, everything is being backupped onto another drive, after which the drive can die slow at the repair center.
Nothing's lost.
It was our main media disk (movies, music, series) connected to the Mac Mini: a beautiful Lacie Mini Hub.
I suspect the failure is due to the heat underneath the Mac Mini.
The thing is still under warranty, so except for the fact I'll need to run back and forth, I probably get a free repair.
Nevertheless, again I got worried about the 'back upping going down'. I musn't think of what would happen with me when my disks with pictures would die.
At this very moment, my MacBook Pro is 'TimeMachined' onto a Lacie 320gb drive.
All my pictures are stored on 2 500GB My Books, and all our movies and media were on the Lacie Mini Hub.
We bought an extra MyBook Mac for Media on the Mac Mini (as it seems we collect rather lots of series ;) )
A while ago I started looking for the perfect backup. Back then I gave up.
Today, while prices are more 'friendly' when talking about RAID, I glanced at the Lacie 2big Triple.
Plain ugly, but RAID and TimeMachine enabled.
Anyone has any experience with this or other affordable RAID systems? Please let me know in the comments.

When you sign up for Photoshop Express, they grant you 2GB of space for you to play around with. Uploading your images is pretty quick and easy, and in no time you are cropping, rotating, and editing with the greatest of ease. In a couple of steps later, you're up and running with your own spot on the website (I love the yourname.photoshop.com - oh how I wish I could have had rc.photoshop.com . argh! ) You can take those images and use them in Facebook, Myspace, (or whatever SocNet place youre into) and you're good to go.

Computer from a distance.
I already got convinced by the people of Simplify Media. Accessing my iTunes folder from our home media server on my portable or my iPhone works perfect.
At home, or anywhere else in the world :)
I have been looking for a similar feature for my computer. And never found a good solution.
Again, I should have checked some services I tested as a beta-user way back when. Today LogMeIn is certainly out of that beta-phase and offers an easy and free Apple Client.
It enables you to login on another computer via the web.
See it as a free Remote Access Desktop. While Apple's excellent program will empty your pocket at 299e/$, this ones free, and certainly more than enough to serve you.

Time Machine and Airport Extreme
Time Machine via the airport extreme on an external wirelss USB HD seemed like the perfect solution to back up my system.
I happily convinced my girl into buying the extreme station for her house.
So, great was my annoyance when finding out Apple excluded the feature in their Leopard launch.
Yet, this weekend, a firmware update for Airport Extreme, and a software update for the Airport Utility changed that, and made me happy again.
I formatted an USB Lacie disk into the HFS Extended format, and upgraded the firmware.
A mere 10min later all was up and running, and Time Machine made a wireless backup of my 50gb system. It took a while, but now I am pretty sure the system gets backupped each hour, on the special disk reserved for only doing that.
And such a thing, ladies and gentlemen, feels pretty good. Knowing all your data has a second version, without you needing to do ANYTHING for it.
While I am writing this, I suddenly realize the comfort of that.

Learning online
I have been busy the last few days looking for some interesting classes online
(Finding turbo classes off line turned out less successful..)
The best I found until now is definitely Aperture Classes from Apple. For free.
(Admitted I like those of SlideShowPro too, but, well, I am more in search for some specific classes for the moment.)
Why the best? Because they're short, well lay-outed, real-time examples, and the overview rocks. Visited presentations get a mark. And you surely get a good overview of what is avalable, all of the time.
It never gets boring.
The other big winner is Lynda.com. And as I have been following the free classes of Indesign, and Illustrator, I am planning to digg into it during the next weeks, on the paid version.
Need to plan a bit though.
I want to digg into:
-Photo-altering (and Yes, I am totally into Aperture as it covers everything I need, and is a true time saver compared to what we did with photoshop back in the early days. Yes, it is slow compared to Lightroom, but dunno, I like this workpalette.)
-Photoshop for webdesign
-Indesign for brochures
-Illustrator for web and for design

Sync your phone to your mac, sync sms to your mac
Apple has a basic (yet very effective) sync: you can sync your calendar and address book in most of the cases. Often you can also call and sms through iSync.
But what is lacking is a true sync for everything: sms logs, send sms through the mac, receive and answer calls through the mac, and also log them.
Logging is the key feature missing on the mac.
It is true, very rarely do you need to log your phone calls (although some of us see this as very useful)
Logging smsses is different though. Who never had the feeling they wanted to keep this or that sms. And who never had to erase messages since the phone was full?
I managed to keep the amount of smsses low enough to keep them on my mobile, but as I recently bought another phone, no way I'd erase them without having them saved somewhere else.
So after a lot of googling, I found the perfect sync: BluePhoneElite.
(So I had to post it here, as many others will be in search for such a tool)
Works like a charm!
I managed to save all my smsses on my mac (and already saved them as a pdf.)
The program works with all kinds of phones: Nokia, Sony Ericcson, Blackberry,...
Really an easy way to log 'conversations'

More iPhone
Upon request...
Nice discoveries:
-The dock has a line out, meaning, I come home dock it and my music streams through the speakers. (Cool!)
-There is a dock included! (none of the other expensive phones I had, had it in the box.)
-The in-ear phones have a great speaker. Calling while on the way is suddenly not so strange anymore.
-You CAN sync to 2 different Macs (my iTunes is linked to my home computer, while my data comes from my portable) without any tricks.
-Tris (Tetris) is very addictive..
Most used programs:
-Definitely mail running IMAP (so no need to delete all things twice)
-SMSsing is truly addictive as it has a typical chat interface (and I noticed this in a recent bill..)
-Remotebuddy as remote for the Macmini at home.
Cool apps:
-Remotebuddy
-Mobilescrobbler, with access to their recommendations.
-An iPod, OMG, an iPod included :P
Needed/Looking for:
-I WANT the possibility to stream ipod music to speakers, as I don't store music on my portable (I installed Simplify Media to check if it works, would solve my problem)
-I truly miss wireless syncing calendars and data (how come they don't have it??)
-The contacts were only accessible within the application. Really strange. (So I installed a hack that made it a stand alone function, Comes in handy when looking for telephone numbers)
-Capture video with sound!!!
-There is a definite need for a good 'push it to flickr' app. A combination of Pushr and iFlickr would be great.
-Flash!
-From my Nokia, I already got used to hear who was calling, making me do effort to pick up the phone (or not :) )
-GPS!
Overall ideas/remarks:
-No need for push email as you can hack the app so I checks mail every minute.
-I don't care about the Edge thing, Stumblr shows more than often open wifi networks. And if needed, I use Edge for mails.
-battery life is as good/bad as my Nokia (Read, dock your phone every night. If not, it will last 2 days. And a half.)
Note to myself: order an extra dock, it never hurts.
-IMAP works like a charm -yep, I am a geek so that went rather fast- (my mailaccounts are NOT synced, my iPhone has IMAP while my local account has POP, perfect sync, and still offline accounts)
-MMS doesn't work yet.
-Buy a cover!
-Hacking is really easy these days.
The SDK (featuring from June onwards):
-Exchange support, making this app great for 'Dze Girl' who works in Microsoft environment these days.
-An sort of Installer.app who looks a lot like Installer.app actually. They seem to have borrowed from the hackers :)-Software which comes available: Push-email, exchange with Outlook, and the whole bunch, real chat software (and not only from AIM I guess..),
-Great quote: 'Voip? When it is over wifi we don't have a problem with that.' Skype, start developping!!
-Did I already say Microsoft support?
-A game demoed showed the possibilities of the Wii features of this thing. (link: live coverage)
-Frankly speaking, I think Apple proved they brought the next big thing, and their iPod success can be repeated. (And this is not because I am an Apple fan, truly not. The Entrepeneurs fund of 100 Million tells us enough. Go and buy some shares, I tell you.)
Buying one?:
When considering buying an iPhone, for Belgium, make sure you get it before the 2.0 release in June.
Now you can still hack it easily, by then maybe not.
Apple offered a nice opportunity to programmers and hackes: a 70-30 deal, Apple takes the 30% that is. It means that suddenly all small developpers can 'share' their app in the iTunes store, making the possibilities it becomes a hit much larger. They also don't have any costs, and they get their money on a monthly base from Apple. Moreover, free apps are hosted for free.
I think their will be still many little apps developed out of the 'Apple box', and hackers are hackers, so they keep on hacking the thing.
Yet the good stuff, the interesting programs, will be distributed through this store.
So let's hope that by then, the iPhone arrives at Belgium, and we can do an official upgrade :)
Things to ask your friend when he brings one:
a simple cover until your find the one you want, an extra cable (to take along at work), an adaptor for power, Bose On-Ear Mobile headphones with mic included, as the included ones do hurt after 30min...
As for the hacking: yes it is plain simple, takes 3 minutes and you are off!
Google iJailbreak and Ziphone. And leave me alone on that part.

I had a 1.1.3 and jailbroke it with iJailbreak without any problem. (This one doesn't downgrade the bootloader)

Got to check this out, available for Firefox, but also Safari and IE: the new revolutionary way to browse images.It shows what the future will promise us for browsing: Piclens
I just love it. Feels a bit like the Apple browsing system (which was bought by them, be aware!) but most off all: allows us for full screen browsing of images. As when you want to enable this for your Flickr, or website, make sure your pics have a 'higher res' of 1024 or so. To make it feel 'smooth' piwelway.
Anyway, try it out, ad enjoy.
(Noticed some problems on Safari though..)

Looking for a case for the iPhone
Ok, so I ended up with this flashy thing (which I hide quite often, I only brag on this blog ;) )
Now I started looking for a casing, as the thing is known to drop and to break often enough to make sure it will happen one day, to me...

iPhone apps
After some days playing around these are the coolest apps on the iPhone (for now)
- Remote Buddy ( a remote for my mac. Which i longed for so long) *****
- Mail (great, means I'll probably leave my mac home more often...) ****
- Calendar ****
- Safari ****
- Newsgator (NNW sync) (reading feeds, needs wifi though) ****
- MobileScrobbler (music on the iphone) ****
- Navizon (works perfect) **
- Youtube (great interface) **
- Pushr (pushes your pics to flickr, moblogging it is) (Camera pro will solve this in a better way i hope) *
- Facebook (is actually a much better interface than the normal version) *
Things that bother me:
- Spamfilter. There is no spamfilter on the mail app. Awful...
- Mail syncronisation. It is awful. I'll need to make imap active. Anyone did this and had problems with it?
- Missing wireless sync
- Syncing with several libraries for iPod (because I want to sync with different macs)
Things that worked out fine:
- Syncing info with mac (after the hack) wasn't any problem at all.
- Installing the voicemail button so it works with ordinary voicemail.
- Installing Dutch for T9 (My phone stays in english, but for t9 it is rather easy to have Dutch supported)
To do:
Instal MT update so it works for iphone for moblogging :)
(Or switching to Wordpress and use their plugin for iPhone Admin)
(Guess I will install that one on C's blog already ;) )

iPhone Broken and unlocked in 5 minutes
What a valentine..
Yesterday my sweet messengers brought an brand new iPhone from the States.
Just in time, as last friday, the latest firmware got cracked and only yesterday a one-click install for mac got released.I decided to wait another day, to see the results of some people (would it be bricked or not)
But after reading some positive results on the Dutch iPhone Forum, I decided to go along with the 0.5.3 version of iJailbreak.com.
As I watched the code passing on the screen, doing the whole thing of breaking and hacking the phone, I feared what I decided.
Yet a mere 4 minutes later it said 'Unlocked and jailbroken, enjoy your iPhone.'
What took me longest was finding a paperclip to insert my own Proximus sim. (and discovering how to open it, I admit..)
And yes, it is working like a glance, showing my proximus network, unleaching my wifi.
C looked at me, with surprise, we both never hoped it would be that easy.
Me as a geek, she fearful, I'd spend Valentine with my new love.
Yet, she doesn't need to worry..
To all of you with bricked iPhones, or phones without wifi, or those who paid an awful lot for the simcard thingy, restore your iPhone and run the iJailbreak (Leopard only...). It worked for me!
And yes, I am still stunned by the hackers: 13year old kids. F*... can you imagine...
(NB: I had to add this from C: Writing this blogpost turned out the longest procedure of all.)

I thought I'd never say this, but what the heck is happening with Firefox.
Since I upgraded to Leopard, the thing started acting weird, and since their last upgrade it is slllllooooooooooooooow.
It is so frustrating...
I kind of like all the extra plugins (though, admitted, delicious is the most used one)(And the different searchengines)
Anyone having similar problems? I am seriously considering throwing the whole thing out.
(well well, delicious in Safari is fixed ;) )

Neooffice vs iWork vs Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac
When upgrading this computer to the next system (Leopard) I decided to install intel-native apps only.
Back then Office for Mac was still dating from 2004, and thus Rosetta. Apple's Pages wasn't such a big deal, so I decided to go for the free Neooffice.
I liked what I saw: a free word editor, offering me what I needed.
Yet, when I installed iWork 08, to my great surprise, all Microsoft problems were solved: from 08, iWork offers perfect compatibility with MS Office, and their beautiful themes allowed me to make quick price offers, looking really pro.
Even their excel alternative was quite good, again, for my needs that is. Numbers turned out more pro than Pages first attempt.So I threw out Neooffice pretty quick.
(I still advise it though, as a free alternative, perfect for students, and people who don't need extra stuff)
I admit, I fell in love with the new iWork 08: more themes for Keynote, much easier than powerpoint used to be, Pages with nice themes, and Numbers, with basic worksheets, allowing me to make some basic charts, and keeping my finances up to date.
But, admitted, many people ask for powerpoints instead of keynotes, and although the Keynote export to PPT works great, one cannot lie, things don't always come out the same.
Moreover, in the near future, powerpoints will be asked more frequently in my new job.
And, although I really hated it's look and feel, Office for Mac 2008 is the only real thing.
Yesterday one got dropped in my mailbox, and I installed it as soon as I got time.
Boy, what a surprise!!!
The new layout of powerpoint rocks. They surely lent some ideas from iWork, and got some inspiration from KeynoteProThemes, but I couldn't be happier: an intuitive interface, with loads of themes, and transitions, but also smartart stuff, which makes it really easy to integrate charts, or sitemaps and sofort.
Yep, cheating on iWork got a whole lot easier with this newly arrived gorgeous lady...

iWork 08
I am a happy user of Keynote. Always have been.
It hasn't been until weeks ago, I discovered Pages. Perfect for what I need. And now an excel sheeting.
I eagerly downloaded the 08 version of all of this.
Yet, I am pretty curious to compare the new iWork 08 with the new Mac Office. I am pretty convinced about Keynote, yet Word and certainly Excel are so advanced, I cannot imagine Apple is able to beat them.
Which is perfectly ok. Both Keynote and Pages seem to be designed with designers as audience: people who like images more than charts, and Lay-out more than utility. Their templates already are proof for that.
Yet sometimes we do need charts, and excel sheets.

After registering the trial, I get a login and get an 'User Agreement'
Online, without scrollbar... So no way to get to the bottom of the page, to mark the 'yes I accept'...
Unless... Making the font miniscule

Keynote's over, so?
So, I admit, I am a little disappointed... The one above is what i was looking for...
The Macbook Air looks wonderful, but I cannot but think, the way I handle my computers, the thing will be bend, or worse, be split into 2 in no time. On top of that, it lacks a cdwriter, and a networkport, 2 things I use rather often in my job.
I don't see myself going back to a portable cdwriter, or passing on data wirelessly to another computer when in need to write a dvd of 4gb. Just tried to transfer 700mb over the (802.11 n) network yesterday, and it took already 10min.
No, the 12inch was heaven compared to that, robust, but still very mobile. I took it everywhere. Once a scooter drove into me, or rather my 12 inch, and afterwards it still works. Don't see that happen with the Air.
There will be oohs and aahs when I see it though, and I will be tempted, and maybe, when a second version is released (*never buy first roll-outs), maybe then...
But now, with the upgrade to Leopard (and its fixes) and CS3, native support, this machine actually runs pretty smooth these days (compared to the beginning)
The only thing lacking indeed is Microsoft Office 2008. (Hey, look, they released it yesterday!!! :) )
The Airport with NAS sounds interesting, a pity we just bought a new Airport 2 months ago.
I like the idea of wireless backups, yet, still, I doubt the speed factor. And, if I would get the HD on the usb of the airport working, that would turn it a similar thing I think.
As for the iPhone, I like the GPSfunction a lot, a whole lot... I wonder if it works in Belgium... Updates in the comments are welcome, as I might order one now. Pity of the useless cam though.
Opening the software was a necessity after Google's release of their open mobile platform, and the true power of the iPhone will show of in the next months I guess, when nice useful apps appear for free.
iTunes Movies Rental was predicted, and it will definitely start the era of online renting. Slowly, yet steady...
After the big downfall of local cd-stores, now DVD-stores (hey these were former cd-stores ;) ) will have to slowly start to prepare for another market to explore...
I will be trying this out in the next weeks, as I still have some iTunes credit on my American account.

Wishlist 2.0
You'd like a wishlist for the end of the year? The digital Wantz.it seems a fast solution. Instead of 'YetAnotherThing', Wantzit integrates delicious, your account and the tag 'dowant' into your perfect wish-list.
Especially: it can be anything you tagged. Even only a picture of paradise (if only in the explanation line you do explain what you want)
The Belgians who created this genius list seemed so busy with it they forgot to give a good explanation. It wasn't totally clear to me where I could see my wish-list, but in the end it is obvious: at yournickname.wantz.it .
While the coders are still buys preparing a widget (for facebook and your blogs) you'll be able to prepare your wishlist for the holidays.

Yesterday we had an entertaining conversation about Facebook.
I hate it, although I do have a profile on it, which I somehow maintain.
My roommate has one, and I was talking about 'What the heck does this AAA, BBB, CCC thing mean?"
Everybody is spamming around with applications, bears that travel the world, vampires, hulks, pokes and whatever. It is totally useless to me, and just eating my spare time.
Where LinkedIn is something professional, and useful, and myspace turned out for teenagers and musicians, Fabebook seemed the first network where suddenly you see youngsters and adults on the same network.
But then you see their profiles...
I deleted all the strange stuff I never wanted to be associated with.
Sorry to say, but dozens of you are having vampiresbites, stupid games, and many more not so appealing stuff on your profile.
So far for your future employer.
The only thing it would tell me: this person enjoys wasting office time.
I think we do not realize what Facebook is doing: we want to be part of the gang, yet at the same time we allow to being spammed with bacon.
And then I got this Spock invite, which I unfortunately forwarded the first time, before starting to refuse this violation of my privacy.
By now I am just sick of it, and I was happy to read I am not the only one.
Whereas Twitter was just the thing you surf to when you want to be bothered, Facebook is just not stopping with overloading my mailbox with useless stuff.
So by now, I am really considering to delete my profile. I won't miss a thing.
About the AAA, BBB, CCC thing: my roommate didn't know the solution either.
So can please someone tell me what it is all about?

Will Telenet upgrade its speed?
Will Telenet upgrade its speed this Thursday? The ad in the left (refresh if you don't see it, it doesn't appear all the time) had this 'velocity counter'.
Since Telenet's take-over of Chello, and the fact that these clients get more for less (more download, more speed) there has been a whole lot of comments on different forums online.
Fingers crossed we'll get a free update to more on Thursday. If so, I'll need to downgrade my account a bit I believe...

Clean install
The clean install didn't even take so long. And it worked like a charm.
The computer is gong superfast now. I guess this is due to the fact I am only running Intel-native programs for the moment.
So now I wonder: will I wait until January for the Intel-native Mac Office 2008?
Or does someone know how I can get this earlier/beta-test it...
(Yes yes, I know, install windows vista on Bootcamp and integrate office for WIndows...)

Ads and blogging
It's no secret: I don't mind ads on my blog.
I was the first to have Adhese/Enchanté on my blog.
And I will not be ashamed of testing other ads.
So the last 2 weeks, an Apple ad, and a Pixmania ad were featured.2 ads, to test the Tradedoubler conditions.
I already did this in the past, but results back then were lousy.
If something had changed by now?
Not really: Tradedoubler simply doesn't work on blogs. Unless you have a high click ratio I guess. And still then.
The money I earned: 0 euro.Compare that to the ever charming guys of Enchanté and you know you made a good bargain.
A really good one.
So if you excuse me, I am gonna cancel that test-account at Tradedoubler.

Pictobrowser updated
I still love to use Pictobrowser a lot, it is an easy tool to integrate Flickr in a fast way.
It's the perfect workflow: taking pic, importing them in Aperture (or Lightroom for that matter) and then with the FlickrExport plugin transferring them to Flickr. And with some clicks, featuring them on your website.
Some clicks or some more, as Pictobrowser got updated: you can easily change the look and feel of your slideshow. Amazingly cool!
They're also announcing Pictomanager, yet the domain is still empty, and no news on what exactly it is. Worth following up.

Whoehaa! My girl made in to the top 100! Coo-hool.
Yet, according to that same girl: How come I made it, and not, let's say Eskimokaka (influence: 16)? Or Dykes and The City (influence: 9)?
She's quite modest (did you read her already?), I totally get why she made it into this list.
Yet I still don't get the algorithm of Metatale.
I am indeed missing Eskimokaka not to talk about Veerle (influence: 13, yet the only one with PR8), Tales From The Crib (influence: 13), Druppels (influence: 16, 13), Smetty (influence: 14).
So ok, their top 100 changed, with Kerygma and me and a bunch of others appearing into the first 100. But where did these others go? I mean, Veerle is certainly an influencer. No doubt about that...
Or am I the only one questioning this?
Update: I am not against Metatale at all, I support their idea of conversation between blogger/influencer and marketeers.
But I am left with some questions. Maybe Veerle has too many conversations worldwide instead of local, but it doesn't explain why an Eskimokaka, or iBert isn't in the top 100. Linked all over, and linking a lot.
Actually when reading 'Dus, voor degenen die graag wat hints krijgen: veel linken (van en naar), veel reacties geven en krijgen, veel posten... dit helpt allemaal om MetaTale invloed bij te krijgen.' makes me wonder why Netlash itself is listed yet not scoring higher. If anyone has an online life, comments on posts right away, frequently updates its site, links and is being linked, Bart is certainly 'active' I'd say ;)
If I dare to compare this to myself: no comment blog nor commenting myself, a link list, yet not an active linker, and ok my posting frequency is higher I guess. I just don't understand it, is what I mean...

It is compatible with Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Blackberry, the iPhone, and Symbian so as long as your phone is a little more advanced than a flip phone, you should be able to use it.
Once you have it loaded, it makes a data connection and from there you can choose any number of channels and search quicker than ever.

Upgrading? No not really.
One thing I learned during the last years is 'never buy a first release computer'.
(Unfortunately I own one now, due to assertiveness or the lack of it at my school...)
And the second one is 'never upgrade to a new system, unless after few months, when all bugs and bytes are resolved.
The advise on many forums is the same: If you have only one computer and it's your production machine, don't upgrade. The 10.5 upgrade is a big one--not a small update, not a few bug fixes. Lots of stuff gets broken and if you need to keep getting your work done, just wait. Let a few dot releases ease things out.
In the past, waiting with some upgrades and releases turned out the best choice in many cases.
I was truly happy not to have upgraded to iTunes 7.0, and happily waited to upgrade my Quicktime.
And if I would have had an iPhone, I certainly would have been happy not to have done that last upgrade ;)
Not to speak about several updates that turned people's macs into weird acting machines.
(That was actually when I decided to wait with upgrades: once my machine went totally mad because of a simple tiny upgrade)
Nope, I certainly am a ramp tourist. I like to hear about all the recent stuff, watch how things go wrong at other people's computers, and when all is fixed, finally get mine upgraded.
Peter, I would recommend you to carefully wait.

For those in favor of a 'simple' phone with style: go for the Prada LG.
All other geeks will prefer the iPhone.

Remote-controlled rubber duck
The humble rubber duck that has kept children occupied and entertained in their respective bathtubs throughout the ages will see a technological improvement in the form of a remote-controlled rubber duck. It will come in the traditional yellow design, but is powered by half a dozen AA batteries instead (2 for the controller and 4 for the duck charger). A 5 minute charge will result in 15 minutes of pure fun - provided your fingers and toes don't shrivel up like prunes first. Needless to say, both the duck and controller are waterproof so no risk of running a minor electrical shock there.

-In a new posting to Apple.com's Hot News webpage, chief executive Steve Jobs has confirmed plans to release a software developer's kit (SDK) for iPhone by February that will allow developers to write native applications for the touch-screen.
-Apple and its wireless partner in France, Orange, will sell an unlocked version of the iPhone.

Surya Vanka.
Microsoft called to invite me for a dinner with Surya Vanka in Le Mess in Elsene, Brussels.
Surya is user experience expert and would reveal a bit on the design secrets of Microsoft.
The Zune, the wonderful Surface Table.. UI always leaves me with wonderful fascination, and it certainly so Surya might
Somehow I turned on the other side of the table due to my late arrival (Heck, finding the spot wasn't that easy I thought it'd be...)
I got great company though, and amused myself chitchatting.
And suddenly great food was served, and the clock pointed 10.30 PM... And I had to run to catch the last train.
Time went so fast, I didn't even met Surya.
Luckily Geert will send me a great PPT, and luckily there is internet and mail to ask those questions I always wanted to know.
I did meet Danny and got introduced to Petra and Caroline and wil certainly see them again next week. (Well, the girls, not Danny ;) )
And there was Pietel, who saved me from the whole train trip to Ghent, and just dropped me. He's such a cutie :)

Ok, since last year we have been busy with it, and still haven't found a solid solution: our newsletter.
We foudn ourselves an easy to go communication module in ExpressionEngine, but while testing our first newsletter, we found out webmail.hogent.be was the first to reject our html mail. Mjammie... After loads of testing nothing to do but send out a plain text email (which probably no one reads)
Our html solution for our other subscribed readers turned out a success, yet, some of them mailed that they couldn't read it either.
The trouble wasn't our coding, but it is just a plain fact that there is not such a standard for email programs.
Css in email isn't widely supported, yet the other solutions aren't that successful either...
That's why campaignmonitor has made a call for an email standard, which hopefully gets some response
They summed up why it is so difficult to make an html newsletter today:
Today there are at least 10 popular email clients out there, each offering different levels of standards support ranging from perfect to virtually non-existent. I often hear comparisons between the current state of standards in email and the web circa 2000.
Because of this huge variation in standards support, email designers have been forced into a corner.
Another big differentiator is the fact that there were 2 or 3 browsers to consider back then and we knew exactly which web browsers were popular, making it much easier to know where to focus our energies. There is almost no data like this for the email world. Are more of my subscribers using Thunderbird or Apple Mail? It's almost impossible to know. So, we've got 3 to 4 times more variations to cater for and we don't even know which ones we should be targeting.
What we're now left with is building for the common denominator. This means bandwidth hogging, image heavy emails with nested tables and font tags. Yes, I said font tags. I see hundreds of these designs being sent every day purely because it's the only way to achieve consistent rendering across the board. Type in the URL of those creating these designs however and you'll often find a beautifully coded standards compliant site. Email design truly is stuck in the dark ages.
So how do you send your html newsletter?
You use something like Campaignmonitor, who (thankfully) has support for all email programs.
And if you (or your school for that matter ;) ) haven't got the resources for paying the Campaignmonitors of this world, what's your solution?

Signal: turn your iPhone into an iTunes remote
Signal is a cool little app that won't void your warranty and lets you control your iTunes library right from the screen of your iPod touch or iPhone.
Signal installs on your Mac, and starts up a little server that is accessible via the browser on your iPhone/iPod touch (or other device with a browser and internet access). Go to your special Signal URL and suddenly you have an iTunes remote control in your hands.
It is important to note that this doesn't stream your iTunes music to a remote device, it simply allows you to control iTunes (start, stop, and skip songs) from afar.

I might be a geek and own a mac...
I am still pretty happy Microsoft invented Office, and made it for Mac.
We're running Office 2004 since, well 2004 I guess. And up to date it is is still the 'latest' build for Mac.

My perfect camera
While asking that last question, and with some time off on the plane, I started to think about 'my perfect digital reflex camera'
For sure it would have
-full frame
-better in high lights and better at lower iso (let's say, equal film instead of dia...)
-raw
-spot measuring (many camerma's lack this)
-razor sharp 2.8 zoomlens
-12million pixels at least
-fast response
-look and feel like a FM3 but then digital ;)
or
-have the possibility to change aperture on the lens again (as I do miss it) // Nikon analogue
-have a simple way to insert some basic IPTC info, so I don't need to add it afterwards (copyright, etc.)
-give me location for my IPTC (geo location through GPS: if they cram a gps in a Nokia N95, they certainly should be able to put it in a monster like the 5D)
-nice extra would be: fast wifi to transfer images wirelessly (sure usb2.0 goes fast, but sometimes it is easy to fetch that one image wirelessly from your camera)
-better against dust (Canon dust remover is a nice add on I believe.)
Actually: a basic fm3 put into digital version and with spot measuring would feel so nice...

Sony Press Event: new Alpha camera
A few weeks ago I got a phone call asking me whether I was interested, being a blogger, to go, as a blogger, to the press event of Sony, launching their newest reflex camera: Alpha.
I agreed.
So today I am on my way to Baveno, Italy, to hear all about this precious new baby Sony is announcing.
It is no new news that Sony is reaching high: they want to become the best in the DSLR market.
A hard task when even Nikon has trouble catching up with Canon.
But, as Sony proved before: they claimed the same with video gaming, and they successfully passed Nintendo and others, and became a world leader in gaming with their PSP.
So, they might have some surprises for us.
Also remember: the CMOS of the recent Nikon DSLR's is in coop with Sony.
Their first Alpha's missed a bit the point: a lack of enough good (Carl Zeiss) lenses and it was rather a 'consumer' camera than pro.
Launching a prosumer reflex will certainly need some technical improvements, next to a new series of Carl Zeiss lenses, and a better CMOS. (fullframe if possible.)
I secretly hope they tried to insert features towards the future like wifi and geolocation.
Because I truly believe to surpass Canon, there is a definite need for re-thinking features to make some stuff easier.
I'll try to keep you all updated while there (with pics and words)

Program for tomorrow: Press conference at 8.00 AM, workshops + interviews at 9.30, experiences (with the new Alpha camera's) in the afternoon. (+ Flight back in the evening.)

Digital vs analogue photography
Photographers talking to each other will definitely start sooner or later on the difference beween analogue and digital.
I never made it a secret I love analogue more than digital, but digital is more cost efficient, and our clients don't see the differences like we do.
I always said I'd switch when camera's would do 12 Mpix and fullframe. Reality made me switch at 8Mpix and go along with the APS-C...
Quite a difference, and frankly speaking, I didn't like it at all. It doesn't feel the same, I don't have the same feeling as picturing analogue.
I had a huge argument on it with a former teacher who said 'you need to adapt'.
But is is hard to adapt when your digital sensor doesn't do the things an analogue film can, or the lens doesn't give the same sharpness and depth of field an analogue camera does.
So I was indeed silently waiting for an affordable full frame sensor at 12Mpix.
Why? Because full frame is needed to give me the feeling of analogue photography:

Digital cameras have very small sensors, so a short focal length lens is sufficient to provide an image that will cover the entire sensor. The short focal length results in a very deep depth of field.
So with the release of the fullframe 5D of Canon I got ecstatic.
Today I am checking whether to buy one, but knowing it dates back from November 2005, I was hoping (amongst many others) Canon would release the 6D any time soon.
With the recent release of the 400D and the 40D, it doesn't look to well, but I still cross fingers they'll release something before Christmas.

It explained me a lot.

Web 2.0: social networking... What's next please?
The famous web2.0 speeches we can all recall from a not so far past all included some keywords: social networking, input from the user, communities, and we certainly can call a few others.
Merely a year later, the user is sick of the social networks.
I predict that in less than another, they'll be screaming for useful apps again :)
I guess what happened was:
web2.0 (as the idea) was working very well with certain applications, such as Amazon, Flickr, ... and Web2.0 got created (the marketing word).
Suddenly everyone wanted to invent their perfect Web2.0 solution, and in the making, earn some money with it. (Read: make it big, sell it to Yahoo or Google)
At this point, the early adopters must have something like at least 20 logins to at least as many services. From which they probably use 2 or 3, or maybe 4. I truly believe that those they keep maintaining will last, while many others will die a silent death (or live on with few 1000 users)
Lately we got an overdose of new 'useful' applications that weren't so useful after all...
And the Twitters of this world were followed by the 'better' Pownces. Similar story with other stuff.
On top of that, the user must have the largest amount of friends possible today...
(I don't know about you, but I certainly am not looking for 'friends' in networks anymore)
Slowly people start to react: 'You are not my friend' as in 'who the heck are you?' :)
People building new internet applications should do a research not try to make YASN(YetAnotherSocialNetwork).
Actually, if it were me, I wouldn't build YASN, I would foresee plugins for the existing ones.
Nice examples I like?: MooCards for Flickr, the BBC radioplugin for Facebook, MyBlogLog for your blog.
Info that comes from the outside IN my chosen apps, or takes info from my chosen apps OUTSIDE to do something with it.
Widgets marketeers would call it. But Moocards isn't a widget, it something that is funny, witty and makes my life easier. And useful...

Mobile PhotoBlogging
Mobile photoblogging is kind of cool.
You take a picture, press send and it appears online.
Up til today I only found the Proximus way, but didn't like it so much: it adds a proximus logo in the corner, and integration in your site needs an extra step (copy paste of code).
No, I wanted an app that uploads to my Flickr account or my blog, straight away. And since I have an N80 with wifi, I would even be able to do it for free when free wifi spots in the neighborhood. (Not that I am not willing to spend money, but admit, data-transfers aren't cheap in Belgium)
After some searching inside Flickr I found Shozu.
Works in a glimpse with a beautiful UI.
Is able to send to Flickr, but also to WordPress, Typepad, Blogger and some others.
(Unfortunately not to MovableType, but I integrated a Flickr-badge that triggers the pictures from a set (moblog) to my site.)
And best of all, it works with an amazing amount of phones. (N95 included...)
I guess some of you might start moblogging too :)

Apparently a lot of websites use the video guy these days.
Coke Zero (aw, I really don't like the site..), Digibarometer,
I still like the first implementation I saw with it best: Ms Dewey of Microsoft.
And each time I get there, I enjoy her, for the easter eggs that is.

How to rip an image directory online?
Does anyone knows the easiest way to rip a image directory at Typepad (or elsewhere)?
They don't have FTP, so you kind of loose your images when transferring to another host.
(Tip to Typepad users: be aware in advance to avoid annoying situations like this ;) )

PictoBrowser Plug-in for Flickr
People already noticed, since the beginning of my re-styled sites, I have been using the fabulous PictoBrowser.
Not so known back then, yet today being hyped...
I actually based a part of my design on its features. It is neat, fast, and beautifully styled, thus integration is seamlessly perfect.
PictoBrowser is an indispensable freeware web application written by New York interactive designers Diego Bauducco and Carlos Gomez. It allows users to browse and display images from Flickr on any web page in a stylish, crisp flash-based interface. The plug-in enhances the functionality of Web 2.0 media sites like Flickr by providing a simple means to display photo sets on their own blog or homepage. To get started just click on the "Info" button on the bottom right corner of any Pictobrowser.
So yes indeed you can run it yourself. Push the info button, fill in your Flickr name, and receive some code.
The good news? It's free!
The better news? The future will bring new updates of PictoBrowser and a super cool new web application that relates to PictoBrowser (on which they don't reveal a thing yet...).

Bicycle
Ok, I am definitely snobbish...
My bicycle got stolen last month, I checked with my accountant, and I can buy a new one on my company because I do use it for work.
So since sales are around, I started checking..
The best buy option is a Trek, life time guaranteed bicycle for 365 euro (VAT included)
Or there is the Sirrus Women, for 499 (VAT included)
My mind says to opt for the Trek, as it is only a bicycle, it is more than enough for what I need, and bicycles can get stolen easily. And it is only a bicycle, you know.
My heart on the other hand... My heart loves the divine beauty of the latter: the lines, the shape, the details. Especially the details.

Admitted
Admitted, the Apple freak in me is alive, but it died a bit when getting this MacBookPro last year.
I know there are a lot that envy me for 'just receiving' one from work. But dunno, it never felt like 'home'.
I miss my 12inch, which was bumped, and full of 'scars', and slow in the end, but fitted me well.
This one annoys me. (Ok, I am nagging I know.)
The thing is, I just can't sell it as it is from school.** (And that's probably why I ended up with a first series instead of the third one, which probably lacks the bugs this one has.)
I feel like reinstalling everything over again, although I did it not so long ago... I almost feel like installing Vista on it... (naaaaaaaah, got you there ;) * )
Things happened to me:
-hard disk failure
-power cord fire
-battery life sucks
-and now the surface seems to be peeling off.
-it often cannot cope with my necessity to multitask...
Somehow it feels like, since Apple became more popular to the mass, the quality of their products is going down.
I still have the feeling the os is the most stable and reliable, but it seems to be the hardware that is lacking some power...
Apple freaks out there, having similar problems?
* I do have Vista running, on my Mac Mini. Looks good these days, I admit.
** If and when a smaller 12inch MacBookPro gets released I'll be the first to have one. (second series that is.)

Do you have 2 computers? You sometimes want to access the one at home but are not able to? Or you have a family member or friend who is stuck with the computer all the time and you can't come over?
Apple offers Apple Remote 4, but it'll cost you 500 bucks.
Or you can use a VNC, but again, there will be some configuring to be done.
Today, Log Me In is previewing their Mac solution, and for the moment it is for free, as they need feedback for the product.
It is a one click install, a registering, and surfing to a site to access your computer.
I certainly love it as there is no need to configure a dynamic dns and sofort. Enjoy it while it lasts I'd say ;)

I was one of the first to be enthusiast about Adhese/Enchanté, and was glad to help them out a bit, getting them introduced in the blogosphere.
I admit: I am not against advertisement. I am not part of the group of bloggers that thinks 'advertisement' is 'dirty' and compromises the neutrality of your content. (written with respect to those who don't want ads. Internet is anarchy and anarchy rules :) )
John might think Enchanté doesn't pay enough, I m pretty happy about them.
As I am not an easy person myself, I checked some other services.

MT 4.0
This blog is running on MovableType. Somehow, since it early beginning, and my early blogging, since 2002, I have been using MT. I like their interface, and after so many years and the launch of so many other blog systems, I still prefer theirs.
Especially when getting to clients, nothing can beat their UI in straight forwardness.
Wordpress is the best competitor but the designer in me likes the look and feel of MT better.
It is nice to see they developed the 4.0 with even a cleaner UI. So I can't wait to test it.
(Actually I'll be happy to try one in Dutch, our brand new family blog I want to launch will be the perfect test.)
The new stuff I really look forward to:
- A completely redesigned user interface
- Get an at-a-glance summary of your blogging activity from content to contributors on our new dashboard
- Easily insert text, photos, files and more with a rich WYSIWYG editing
- Built-in asset, photo and file management
- Built-in member registration system for reader and comment authentication
- Support for OpenID
- Aggregate posts from multiple blogs into a single blog

Put Technorati tags on your site
Technorati offers you a way to show your tags into a tagcloud. You need to copy paste some code, adapt a bit and if you ping your tags, something will appear in that cloud.
Nice thing, if it weren't for the fact it is way ugly.
When trying to configure the thing I got some unexpected help from Lode Vanhove, who fetched the CSS code, and adapted it.
He wrote down CSS code, which I copy here below to help you configure it.
It removes the standard style and allows you to fit it into your own site
First make sure you copy paste the code into your template. You'll probably put it in a sidebar, or in a footer like on this site.
Then adapt your CSS by adding the stuff below.
