Helene Ryenbakken

'You can give critics, because we don't to agree on everything, as long as we can discuss.'
Wow.

(And she even has the looks :) )

Wishlish #3: Wacom Tablet Bamboo

g_00448900.jpg

Alex Webb, a member of Magnum Photos since 1976, has published seven books including Hot Light/Half Made Worlds; Under a Grudging Sun; Crossings: Photographs from the U.S. Mexican Border; and Istanbul: City of a Hundred Names, his most recent book. He has worked for many of the major publications including National Geographic, Life, New York Times Magazine, GEO, and is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Hasselblad Foundation Grant, and the Leica Medal of Excellence. Webb’s work has been exhibited widely in the U.S. and Europe in museums such as the International Center of Photography, the High Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego. To view his work: http://www.magnumphotos.com

Rebecca Norris Webb, originally a poet and journalist, had her first NYC solo exhibition at Ricco Maresca Gallery in 2006, the same year her first book, The Glass Between Us, was published. Her series, which uses text and images to explore the complicated relationship between people and animals in cities, has also been included in several group exhibitions, including "Why Look at Animals?" at the George Eastman House. Her project was awarded sponsorship by the Blue Earth Alliance. Currently, she's working on a series of photographs in the American West called, "My Dakota,” and a joint book with her husband and creative partner, Alex Webb, called “Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba.” Rebecca edited Alex's two most recent books (Crossings and Istanbul) and teaches photography workshops with him around the world. Wishlist #2: Domke Fotobag

Wishlist #1: Annie Leibovitz 'At work'

"Annie Leibovitz at Work" te koop bij Amazon

Out of the box denken.

An? Pieter? Iemand van Canon die meeleest? :)

-partijtje sjotten (bloggers tegen elkaar??)
-basketgame (als we geen 11 man bijeenkrijgen.)
-fietsen?
-...

A good client...

2820245785_2602088bd0_o.jpg

Nr 1 kan tellen. 'Nothing takes 5 minutes'. Indeed...
If only.

Port'A

'2 watertjes, graag.'

Soldates

42.jpg<15.jpg

"At an age when social, sexual, and educational explorations are at their highest point, the life of an eighteen-year-old Israeli girl is interrupted. She is plucked from her home surroundings and placed in a rigorous institution where her individuality is temporarily forced aside in the name of nationalism. During the next two years, immersed in a regimented and masculine environment, she will be transformed from a girl to a woman, within the framework of an army that is engaged in daily war and conflict. She is now a soldier serving her country, in a military camp amidst hundreds like her, yet beneath the uniform there is someone wishing to be noticed, listened to, and understood.

Almost fifteen years after my mandatory military duty ended, I went back to several Israeli army bases, using the medium of photography as a vehicle to re-enter this world. Serial No. 3817131 represents my effort to come to terms with the experiences of being a soldier from the perspective of an adult. My service had been a period of utter loneliness, mixed with apathy and pensiveness, and at the time I was too young to understand it all. Through the camera’s lens, I tried to reconstruct facets of my military life, hopeful to reconcile matters that had been left unresolved."

The Breeders! Begot.
Don't think so. Of: oldies embrace the future.Ofzoiets.
Where was my mind? ;)

Collector's confectie

Email newsletters: the horror

css-guide.gif

Blijkbaar wilde men dat geld liever stoppen in nieuwe pizzeria's.

Lorenz Bogaert in De Standaard

Note: 30.000 man op de trein die dag?

Allen daarheen dus :)

Vlaemsch behangpapier

Rendezvous01_kopjesLR.jpg

“RendezVous1&2” by Atelier Blink, (BE)
These “naughty” patterns take their inspiration from those repetitive floral garland patterns which so many of our forebears were exceptionally fond of. It is only upon re-focussing our eyes, inclining your head slightly to the left and humming the Brabançonne that you may discover yourself surrounded by intertwining figures, salaciously winding themselves around your walls in never-ending twists and turns of shameless sensuality.

Stuur gerust een mailtje naar Bert AT denzzo DOT be.

Glow

Glow comes to Belgium... Some memories suddenly come back.

While living in Israel, I shared an apartment with this wonderful lady.
She worked for the British Council, and often I was invited for cultural events (and less cultural but as exciting :)).
I believe I've met Lior Kalfo (the director of this show) once in a while on some of these events. Or maybe he just lived in the same neighborhood.
I saw the interview and suddenly everything was back.
All day, when I close my eyes, I am elsewhere.

Glow seems a promising show, with loads of wow-effects.
Something perfect to see with family.
Hey littl' bro, feel like going?

Mewaf/Van Marcke presents Unchained Working.

unchained.jpg

Often we, bloggers, get invitations to all kinds of events, a lot of them nice, amusing or full of fun, yet, seldom as inspiring as the one yesterday.

Robin invited us in name of Mewaf to a presentation on their Unchained Working.
I already knew Unchained Working, probably of a late browsing session, looking for Belgian design, and I bookmarked them because of their unconventional approach of office design.

I was quite surprised to discover Mewaf is connected to/a branch of Van Marcke.
2 years ago I had the opportunity to go for a company visit and visit Interior 2006 on their invitation.
I loved the way brother and sister Van Marcke were telling their story, on how they asked a designer, how they looked for inspiration, and made what seemed impossible possible.
Everything was breathing enthusiasm.

To my great surprise I noticed Caroline Van Marcke was sitting at our table. Quite an opportunity to exchange ideas :) Something we all did.
Imagine sitting at the table with some presidents of a quite unique company, asking whatever you want to ask.
What marked the conversation yesterday, was the eagerness to learn from each other, and a healthy interest from all people sitting at the table.

The moment that struck me most was Mrs Van Marckes answer on C's question 'What's the key to your success'.
'Soul'.

It said everything these people were saying all evening: Believe, and if you do so, go for it.
Something which was said in different words a little earlier by Mr. Van Marcke himself.
I believe that his words not only impressed me.
More than often I need to explain to people what a blog is, so it came to a surprise that this man of 70 not only knows what a blog is, but told us he believes in communication and wants his employees to go and blog.

Unchained working is more than changing an office, putting less desks for more people, it's a culture, and a time shift. And next to that is a logical evolution since everything dramatically changed in the last 30 years (thinking of computers, shift to portables and mobiles).
Some of us might be born with it (I can't imagine working in a fixed office, I even refused one), plain fact is that most of us are living it, and old habits die hard.
I can imagine how difficult people find change, or the fact their desk isn't were it used to be. Actually, it is everywhere.
Besides the fact of the disappearing desk, it's being confronted with a new spirit, one of exchange, different communication.

It's nice to see a Belgian company isn't only working on developing this new idea, but it's also integrating this concept in their own offices.

(Van Marcke had a difficult successor story in 1999, yet, I believe, the company made some huge changes these last years resulting in a stronger brand, with a stronger identity. And, moreover, one which preaches innovation. I am still convinced in my point that Belgium has some fine design companies, unfortunately we don't scream this loud enough)

Wooden Radio with a mission

wood radio.jpg

It's so retro looking, two tones of wood, and made by hand by carpenters in an Indonesian village with high unemployment. The designer Singgih Kartono wants to "redefine the relationship of the user between the product" and revitalize craft industries and local skills, while using local sustainable materials. Even the packaging is designed to be simple, minimal and reuseable for transporting the radio.

The designer decided he wanted to give work to an area with high unemployment.
Talk about eco, design and a mission :)

Deseo, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Seeing the frequency of my posts lately it is very obvious the time for blogging is minimized due to too much work...
When browsing my feedreader, I stumbled upon this.
How I wouldn't mind to go over and spend some time to unwind, to lie down and just enjoy nothingness...

deseodesignhotels.jpg

"The Mayan Riviera, long visited for stunning archaeological ruins and scuba diving, now has the ultimate destination for relaxation. Deseo, in Playa del Carmen, maintains the charm of old fishing villages along the Caribbean coast, yet in the smoothest of transitions, offers the best of today's lifestyle. Open-air lounges, seabreeze and succulent dishes can be enjoyed in a purely refined atmosphere. The cocktails let alone the sounds of the best DJ's from around the world will intoxicate you into a soothing state of mind."

I am sure my girl wouldn't mind joining in :)

Blazen, blazen

Does the little present of Cherry & Cake of few days ago have something to do with this:
Blazen Maar? Or not?... LVB seems to know more...

And indeed. Blazenmaar.be is registered by, guess who, Cherry & Cake.

blazenmaar.png

Getting curious :)
So, a little more research reveals this:
They mention several things on the blog:
End date: 18.10.08 (that's when something is going to happen in Brussels.)
Start date: 22.03.08

Googling 18.10.08 and Brussels reveals this: Stad onder stroom , a game on climate and change, by Coalition Climate.. Would it have anything to do with this?..
Googling 22.03.08 reveals world water day...

Zoomit and e-invoicing.

The independents amongst my readers probably know what I mean by 'the trouble of invoicing'.
Invoicing never has been such a burden.
I don't have a real problem finding jobs (I actually have too many at the moment. People in for serious co-op can drop a mail.)

The real trouble is being paid..
Once you have sent your invoice, the waiting starts.
While in Belgium the official 'due time' is one month, many, way too many companies neglect this, and if you get paid after 2 months you can be happy.
Most agencies never bother to pay before those 2 months.

And then the trouble comes in: imagine: you getting your wage after only 2 months...
(My advise to anyone becoming independent: make sure you have a serious money pig aside to fill this gap of cashflow. Really)
I was prepared for it when I started. And I still am. But I do see a huge shift in paying habits of the clients. They all pay a little later than before.
You often have to send a 'reminder'.

zoomit.png

So I am happy to see the Zoom-It initiative. It is e)invoicing but even better. Because e-invoicing means your clients gets the invoice by mail in its mailbox. Zoom-it means your client get his invoice in his bankaccount.
Each time he opens his e-banking he'll see this or that invoice is still due.
And that's something I like.
I want my client to see that he still owes me in an obvious place. Where better than in your e-banking?
I am happy to see my invoicing software coops with them, so I can send invoices out of my software straight to the client.

Banks cooperating: KBC, Fintro, Dexia, Fortis, ING, Landbouwkrediet, AXA, Centea.
Receiving ZoomIt documents is free, sending them is at a cost.
Prices are not known yet...

Pecha Kucha Ghent

Pecha Kucha.png

A while ago, C and I were considering starting up a Pecha Kucha Ghent. But due to very busy work for both of us, we kind of delayed things.
And then suddenly, someone contacted me, asking if I wanted to present myselef on Pacha Kucha Ghent on May 27th.
A group of people at Sint Lucas Ghent took the initiative to organise it, and I am glad they did!
So I'll be speaking at the first Pecha Kucha Ghent with some great minds (A bit impressed by those by the way..)

Puts tail between legs: Tried it out yesterday, 20 seconds per slide is really really quick. So I am off trying to make a good presentation.

Btw, there is a Pecha Kucha Brussels on May 20th.
For both events, registration is needed!

In case you might be looking for a pool for a bbq.

head.jpg

Karine is a friend of a friend, and thus became a friend of mine.

Karine decided to go the Africa and volunteer in a WildLife Foundation caring for wild and wounded animals.
For that reason she's organizing loads of stuff (mainly: selling her friends for all kind of events).
You can bid on the item of your choice.
One of the great things amongst them is:
-Swimming pool and BBQ
-Getting a sleepover in Claudia's apartment.
- Whispering Bordel
-Thai cooking class by Zabine

You have to hurry as the bidding ends tonight!
We're seriously considering the Swimming Pool Bid (especially because there is a beautiful assistent ;) )

Check everything over here!

I am still stunned when seeing the absurdity of Israel and Palestine. One more picture to illustrate it.

“Na’im El’iam (36), a Palestinian resident of the Jabalyah Refugee Camp in Gaza, holds the body of his three-month-old son Muhammad. The body is wrapped in blue cloth. On orders of the security forces, Na’im is standing in the parking lot near Erez Checkpoint, which is closed to traffic due to violent confrontations between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza. Na’im El’iam was trying to get home in order to bury his son, who died of a congenital heart defect in Israel’s Tel Hashomer Hospital, after doctors tried to save his life. The Palestinian father arrived at Erez Checkpoint, the main border crossing between Israel and Gaza, just as it was getting dark - a few minutes after a shooting incident between Hamas fighters and Fatah members who were hiding inside the checkpoint. After waiting for the shooting to end and then for his documents and permits to be checked, Na’im El’iam was permitted to cross the checkpoint to the Palestinian side with his son’s body.”

The Information Machine (Mash up)

This video is a mash-up of the “The Information Machine,” by Charles and Ray Eames. The original was produced for the IBM Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, and attempted to demonstrate how modern computing and human creativity were developing hand in hand.

Additional footage comes from the 2007 IBM Global Leadership Forum held in Washington, DC. Those speaking include IBM CEO Sam Palmisano, IBM Senior Vice President for Technology and Manufacturing Nick Donofrio, and US Department of Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez.

Speech coaching. The strength of a presentation is not the slides you make, it’s the story you tell!
PowerPoint has celebrated its 20th birthday. For Robert Gaskins though, the creator of the product, this was not his most joyful event. He is not happy the way his product is used in business environment. And neither am I….
The objective of my presentation is to awaken everyone who uses PowerPoint in presentations. With a few simple guidelines your message is so much more powerful. PowerPoint is a wonderful tool, provided you use it as a visual aid. The strength of a presentation is not the slides you make, it’s the story you tell! To ensure real individual and targeted coaching sessions, could participants send me as soon as possible a PowerPoint presentation they have done?

Wolves touching ground.

Cai Guo-Qiang is one of the most prominent living Chinese artists. Trained in theatre design, in 1999 he won the International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennale. He is best known for his firework-based set-piece installations and for drawings made using ink and gunpowder. In November, a set of 14 untitled drawings by the artist sold at Christie’s, Hong Kong, for £9.5m ($19.1m)—setting a new record for a Chinese contemporary artist at auction.

The Guggenheim in New York hosts Cai’s first major retrospective, I Want to Believe. And this until May 28th.On none of my trips to NY, I happened to find time to visit this museum.
Hopefully next time it will be possible. And hopefully it is before May 28th...

You Are Beautiful

We live in a world that bombards us with fear-inducing marketing aiming to convince us that we're too ugly, too fat, or too old so that we'll go out and buy stuff to fix it. How often, if ever, do we get sweetly and succinctly told that there's nothing wrong with us? It's the simplicity behind You Are Beautiful that makes its message so immediate and powerful.

The creators of the site and all it's members are anonymous, choosing to let their message speak for itself. Collaborators design different versions of the three words "you are beautiful" and then hi-jack public areas that would normally contain advertising. From more traditional graffiti spaces to usurping billboards and lining the insides of advertising-riddled subway cars, the idea is to replace the ubiquitous consumer-driven messaging we normally see with a compliment. A little burst of positivity, unexpected in the midst of buy-buy-buy messaging, that asks us to do absolutely nothing but feel good about ourselves.

The collected images of how the message has manifested itself created an exhibition that's appeared in galleries around the world. Living up to the true nature of its movement, You Are Beautiful seeks out individuals to contribute as well. People can let out their inner artist with their very own version of the message, be it public or private, and send pics to the site for posting. The only thing they ask is that the message not be commodified or sold in any way - to just always be free and always be true to itself.

Plus, for just the price of postage, Are You Beautiful will mail you a free package of stickers. Spread the message, take pics of where you put your stickers, and send them to the site to be added to the collection.

So let us all collect some stickers and tag our cities with them!
I already ordered mine!

Club Med Testing for you :)

alpencm.png

The very nice people of Club Med contacted me a while ago, wondering if I'd be interested testing their facilities and writing my experiences down.

A free midweek in Chamonix. Who'd say no to such an offer?
Not me!

So on Sunday I leave for few days to go and check their hotel, their spa, and I certainly hope to enjoy some skiing around.
I'll posting my pics and experiences on this site.

Yesterday I received the program, and I have to say: 'Mjammie'.
Each Club Med Village has its own 'specialties' and Chamonix, features, except for its magnificent view on the Mont Blanc, a spa, sauna, beauty center for 'new energy', good food and a very charming hotel. And snow, of course.

'New Energy', let that be what I need right now, so I am definitely looking forward to the Balinese massage we receive upon arrival.

(*Disclaimer: Yes, Club Med is paying this press trip for me. -And a bunch of other journalists.-)

Rainwater Hog

rainwater_hog.jpg A nice and easy solution to collect rainwater.

"The Rainwater Hog (2006) is a small-scale modular storage tank for collecting rainwater that can be reused for watering plants, washing the car or whatever you need...The Hog can be installed vertically against a wall, or horizontally, and it's specifically sized to fit between structural frames. One unit holds 47 gallons of rainwater collected from a downspout, and if a larger capacity is needed, simply attach another Hog. A percentage of sales will go to the nonprofit Water Aid. Also in keeping with the eco-conscious Hog, is the fact that it ships without packaging. Other than a small box holding an Elbow Vent and Connector taped to the unit, the Hog arrives unwrapped, unboxed and just as you see it pictured. A Leaf Catcher/Outlet Kit must be purchased (sold separately) for the Hog. (Subsequent Hogs can be added without needing extra Leaf Catcher/Outlet Kits.) A Wall-Mounting Kit is also available for vertical installation."

I admit, I especially see the use for it on travelling vans ;)

Noon Solar Announces Spring 2008 Collection of Bags

noon-solar.jpg
I have been looking for a ecological way to load my mobile and ipod.I already found the simple solar panels, but this solar bag is a better solution: the panels are built in, so they don't take extra space. You can arrive at work and put the bag near sunlight (even if cloudy) and it will charge the internal battery.A pity they're sold out, and a fancier design would fit them better.
Noon Solar is releasing a new collection in April. So hurry to check them out :)

Running a Mux

Totally hot again: digital tape mixing :)

Remember the days you had nothing but a little tape recorder and internal fm recorder. Clicking record, stopping, rewind, forward rewind, finding the end of the song. Waiting until the presenter announced a song and try to catch a song without too much dj talk inside of it.
It was the end of the 80's, the beginning of StudioBrussel. I was 12, and got my first simple taperecorder and 2 tapes for my christmas.
And it was sheer happiness.

So here's Muxtape. The site, created by New York based web designer and photographer, Justin Oullette allows users to create their own mixtape by uploading their 12 song playlist, then storing said muxtape on their own subdomain. Users can then share their creation by sending a link to their friends. No copies to distribute. No mess. It’s all so very clean and filled with Ajax-y goodness. Anyone want to start a Muxtape club?

For all of you who want to be reminded of those days, or for all of you who want to experience how it used to be before cdplayers, and mp3's ;)

Apple NYC running out of iPhones

For the people going to the states, you might want to try your luck in another state...

Then again:

If you were planning to buy an iPhone at one of the three New York Apple Stores, then you might be out of luck. According to The Huffington Post, the SoHo, 59th Street (5th Avenue Store), and new W 14th Street locations are all sold out of this hot little phone.

At the 59th Street store, an Apple employee was quoted saying, "You can always go online." So, if you are looking for an iPhone in NY, you might be left only two options:
AT&T stores, or Apple's online store.

Update: the online US Apple Store is showing "5-7 days" shipping time for both the 8 and 16 GB models.

I wonder if this shortage has to do with the lack of supply or with the fact a new (3g?) will be on the way? When the US Apple Store lacks models, something else might be going on...

Boobs and Dinks Early Detection Kits

BD2_4.jpg BD_1.jpg

While testicular and breast cancer is something we might not want to think about, Shanon Gerdard uses humor to eliminate some of the fear surrounding that dreaded monthly self-exam. Her Boobs and Dinks Early Detection Kits include crocheted breasts or penises that contain small lumps that can be found by following instructions provided in the accompanying booklets. On top of everything else, she donates $5 from every sale to Cottage Dreams, a cancer recovery initiative in Haliburton, Ontario.

Learning online

aperture.png

I have been busy the last few days looking for some interesting classes online
(Finding turbo classes off line turned out less successful..)

The best I found until now is definitely Aperture Classes from Apple. For free.
(Admitted I like those of SlideShowPro too, but, well, I am more in search for some specific classes for the moment.)
Why the best? Because they're short, well lay-outed, real-time examples, and the overview rocks. Visited presentations get a mark. And you surely get a good overview of what is avalable, all of the time.
It never gets boring.

The other big winner is Lynda.com. And as I have been following the free classes of Indesign, and Illustrator, I am planning to digg into it during the next weeks, on the paid version.
Need to plan a bit though.

I want to digg into:
-Photo-altering (and Yes, I am totally into Aperture as it covers everything I need, and is a true time saver compared to what we did with photoshop back in the early days. Yes, it is slow compared to Lightroom, but dunno, I like this workpalette.)
-Photoshop for webdesign
-Indesign for brochures
-Illustrator for web and for design

Museumtalks

museumtalks.png

Finally!

I have been preaching this as an example in my podcast 'initiatives' for months.
Someone must have picked it up ;) (Just joking, I believe in 'the moment' aspect of this one. Several people where thinking of such a thing)
And now museumtalks is live and well: an alternative audioguide for museums, free and to take along on your ipod or alike.
A well moneysaver for both museum and visitor (no fees for the existing audioguide and no need for personnel to maintain it)
And the best advertisement a museum can ask for...

As some of you know (but certainly not all) I spent 6 months in a jail.
Not as a prisoner, but as a photographer. :)

I am still interested in photography of this subject, and Jane Evelyn Atwood made a huge series on it.

Some of her amazing pictures are to be seen in Justitiepaleis, in Brussels from March 10 til March 31.

Some of the images can be seen here.

Kluster’s 72 Hour TED Challenge

2295799185_d8697d8cb6.jpg

Kluster, founded by friend and young punk Ben Kaufman is in full force here at TED. The former iPod accessory entrepreneur recently (ie: last week) launched his new platform to allow groups of people (just like you and me) to affect decision making processes inside what for has long been a buttoned up-decision making process. I encourage everyone to pop by the site, check out some of the open projects and watch the tutorials to learn more. It’s a truly unique and game changing proposition.

The deal at TED is simple; Kluster is going to create a brand new product in the next 72 hours, with the help of the “1000 brightest people in the world” and all of you. That time is broken down into phases starting with the inception (the idea), through industrial design, naming, engineering, identity and branding, ad campaign, and finally packaging. There’s a good 7 hours left in the first phase (brainstorming the product idea), where users can contribute ideas (sparks) as well as invest their currency (watts) towards the future of the project. The team has kitted out a hotel room suite with all the fixings of a true prototype lab, 3D printers and tools. 72 hours from now, we’ll see what idea rises to the top and into the hands of everyone involved.

To make the deal a little sweeter, the team at Kluster put up $15,000 in rewards. Fancy yourself an innovator and think you can contribute? Time is running out. Go get involved!

Josworld goes M'aTuVu

You’re a creative person and you would like to exhibit your work ?
You have something to show the world?

Then you’ll have the possibility to show yourself by means of the project « M’ATUVU ». Maybe you will soon be able to admire your own work in the exhibition space of JosWorld. This space will be thrown open for expositions, completely low profile. Also music, theatre, dance and performance will be given a chance, as long as creativity makes up the central concept.

« M’ATUVU » is a project of JosWorld, a graphics collective and non-profit organization that wants to inject new life into the cultural world by means of inventive and creative projects. The exhibition space of the collective is situated in Lakensestraat, in the middle of the Brussels cultural neighbourhood. Here Josworld organizes exhibitions, but also happenings and performances. The main commitment of this all: creating a dazzling dynamism between creative persons, artistic projects and the cultural neighbourhood.

The « M’ATUVU » shopwindow is available for individual artists or collectives for 2 week periods.
This way we want to maintain a dynamic creative flow, and give as much artists as possible the chance to expose their ideas.

We are actively on the lookout for - and encouraging people to show off their work. This way we want to build a complete network of young creatives.
Interested? Just email us at
matuvu@josworld.org. That’s it!…

Looking for a case for the iPhone

Ok, so I ended up with this flashy thing (which I hide quite often, I only brag on this blog ;) )
Now I started looking for a casing, as the thing is known to drop and to break often enough to make sure it will happen one day, to me...

My favorites list of iPhone Casing / Sleeves:

18963_192x199_image.jpg

Handmade vilt from workingclassheroes.
Seriously considering this one, rather high priced..

iphone_home_walnut.jpg
A casing in wood. How's that for cool?
Hand carved and pretty eco (except fo the trees that are cut down of course..)
From Miniot

crocoblack.jpg
Croc leather, flip case, from Sena. A favorite in my eyes.

olive2.jpg
The incase urban rubber protective cover.
Looks less classy.. yet still handy and cheap.

Picture 2.png

Vajacases do offer something classy :)

whitegloss1-2.jpg
The incase plastic slider.

Which one would you advise?

About beer and marketing...

What does a cult brand look like? Well, here's one example.

WestvleterenA religious order of silent monks in Belgium creates a cult beer. It's calledWestvleteren. You must make an appointment to buy it. To make an appointment, you call the monks' Beer Phone. Yes, it's called the Beer Phone. The monks may talk while on the Beer Phone. You may buy only two cases at a time. The beer is sold once per month. The monks do not advertise, nor do they label the bottles. They make 60,000 cases per year; that's 5,000 cases per month, or 120,000 bottles. Tales abound of people driving 16 hours across parts of Europe for a beer run. Some experts call it the best in the world. The monks believe, truly, that they "sell beer to live, and not vice versa."

Besides being what people describe as an excellent beer, Westvleteren has developed into a cult brand based on its rituals. All of the items mentioned above are ritualistic. Make an appointment. Call the Beer Phone. Two-case limit. No label. A regular release schedule. A unifying belief system. However they're defined and practiced, rituals embody culture. They are symbolic expressions of a company's values.

A cult brand like Westvleteren is created by people religiously devoted to their craft. The monks in Belgium are serious about their business, but they do not obsess over maximizing profit or monetizing eyeballs. They do not do brand extension. They embrace scarcity as a necessary component of quality, thereby ensuring future value.

It is culture that creates a cult brand.

Repetto x Earnest Sewn Organic Shoes

repettocollab.jpg repettocollab1.jpg

Earnest Sewn and French footwear company Repetto are collaborating for limited-edition eco-friendly shoes as part of Barneys "Greencaste" line. Together they enlisted Cone Denim, the country's oldest denim factory (and the same one that's behind Loomstate's green jeans for Barneys), to ensure a 100% organic product. In fact throughout the entire weaving process, starch is the only addition to the natural fiber.

iPhone apps

After some days playing around these are the coolest apps on the iPhone (for now)

- Remote Buddy ( a remote for my mac. Which i longed for so long) *****
- Mail (great, means I'll probably leave my mac home more often...) ****
- Calendar ****
- Safari ****
- Newsgator (NNW sync) (reading feeds, needs wifi though) ****
- MobileScrobbler (music on the iphone) ****
- Navizon (works perfect) **
- Youtube (great interface) **
- Pushr (pushes your pics to flickr, moblogging it is) (Camera pro will solve this in a better way i hope) *
- Facebook (is actually a much better interface than the normal version) *

Things that bother me:

- Spamfilter. There is no spamfilter on the mail app. Awful...
- Mail syncronisation. It is awful. I'll need to make imap active. Anyone did this and had problems with it?
- Missing wireless sync
- Syncing with several libraries for iPod (because I want to sync with different macs)

Things that worked out fine:

- Syncing info with mac (after the hack) wasn't any problem at all.
- Installing the voicemail button so it works with ordinary voicemail.
- Installing Dutch for T9 (My phone stays in english, but for t9 it is rather easy to have Dutch supported)

To do:

Instal MT update so it works for iphone for moblogging :)
(Or switching to Wordpress and use their plugin for iPhone Admin)
(Guess I will install that one on C's blog already ;) )

Otto Lange's painting blog

200801281051

C. Chaney says: "This is artist Otto Lange's weblog about his artwork. The paintings are truly wonderful and his writing is REALLY funny too. The funny thing is that the funny little essays usually have absolutely nothing to do with the artwork." Link

Now this is interesting: Otto Lange has a blog. Showing his paintings. And selling them on eBay.
When you click a link (His beautiful brownie for example) you notice the guy doesn't make bad money with it.
I mean, of course many artists get a lot more when showing in galleries and sofort. But small ones, not even known might find this way an interesting way to sell art.
His work being featured on BoingBoing might help ;)

Books, books, books

We went to Fnac last weekend and totally lost ourselves in the book department.
I bought this one 'Brochures' on beautiful graphical design for 'brochures' :)

The very descriptive title ' An Essential Primer for Today's Competitive Market' summarizes it all.

Nice designs, nice tips, and I especially liked the 50 tips for creativity.

I could have bought a whole lot more, but admitted, our weekly budget was spent, so we went home, and digged ourselves in our newly acquired treasures...

Nokia Trends Lab

200802071406.jpg Due to an awkward coincidence ('we need someone who can work with mac and knows a bit about javascript') I am travelling around (sitting in Mechelen today, Antwerp tomorrow and Amsterdam the end of the month)

What am I doing: making sure the Nokia Trend Lab gets features on the streets and in discotheques. (Read: the computers doesn't fail on us...)

While the program is running -and not crashing ;) - I have some time to check the site.

It is interesting to see at this moment, brands are taking art and creativity into account, integrating it into their marketing. Personal identity, and personalization.

As artists had to make sure they got subsidized by government, I think many of them now see (or should see) opportunities like these, and experience them as new possibilities.

Lomo LC-A Buy-out.

Quite a marketingcampaign..

They're taking old broken cams back, for 100 euro, to be spent in their shop.

Knowing that htese cams costed a 150 euro back when, it's a good bargain for a broken camera I think.

And a perfect way to show your customers that you're addicted to your own stuff, and eco friendly on top of that. (And probably able to make a lot of money out of it too...)

Onme Belt

onme-belt.jpg
For those days when you need your cell phone, keys and wallet but don't feel like carrying a purse, the onme bag is a perfect companion.

These were being carried in Fred Segal for a while but the designer has them made by hand and couldn't keep up with orders, so
I'm thrilled to see them available again.

It's made in downtown LA of sweatshop free labor from a super soft leather.

Aanrijding in Moscou

I remember years ago, when being one of the first times in Ghent, seeing a tram with destination 'Moscou'.
Only much later I discovered Moscou is a part of town in Ledeberg.
Still makes me smile when jumping on the tram.

Today a new Flemish movie is being released 'Aanrijding in Moscou' (Watch the trailer until the end ;P)

We went to Pecha Kucha last night.

Like last time, it turned out an interesting event, especially due to one speaker.Jean Paul van Bendegem, logic and philosophy of science, turned out to be a splendid 'pechacha' person. Send A Message

Have you ever wanted to travel to Palestine just to write a message of love in graffiti for your sweetie? Or perhaps you wanted to tell that buddy of yours that he owes you $20 bucks and just wanted it to be visible on something as divisive as a wall to illustrate the rift the debt has caused between the two of you? Well now you can do both of those. At Send A Message you pay and Palestinians Spray! For a mere 30 Euros, you can have your message of love or debt collection spray painted on this 620 Kilometer fence. In return, you get 3 digital photos to share with those who the message is aimed at.

All kidding aside, the wall is a great project, a collaboration between Dutch advertising professionals and creative Palestinian youth, each message posted reminds Palestinians trapped inside the Wall they have not been forgotten, helping to keep hope alive. The project also allows those inside those wall to send one single, simple message: “we are human beings, just like you, with sense of humor and lust for life.” That’s why they do this, and enjoy it.

Counting down

We weren't half of our trip when C. mentioned: in 7 days the LWord will be on.

So yesterday we looked for some possibilities to download the thing. We were given a nice P2P link, but it would have taken us 6 hours to get it. Something nor I, nor C were ready for.

So I looked a little further and was glad to see this thread: a direct link to the new episode...

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FOZAVQM8

Pass: lwordtalk.com

15min later we were watching.

Enjoy ;)

WWF fishmen out in the wild

Usually it's Greenpeace or Gaia who come out and grab our attention by using stunts. This time it's World Wide Fund For Nature (formerly known as World Wildlife Fund) and to my knowledge that's a first. WWF Belgium has just launched their new awareness campaign, based around a tool called Climate Impact Reducer. It teaches people how they can stop climate change (aka global weirdness) by doing small things every day. The counter on the right hand side of this post shows how the meme is catching on.
To kick off the campaign, fishmen like the one you can see in the pic showed up at Brussels Midi train station. Anyone got pictures of the fishmen in action? Their Flickr campaign set doesn't have them yet, and neither does their official campaign website or the WWF YouTube channel. What I want to know is: how did commuters react? Did they confuse it with the recent Music For Life campaign by Studio Brussel, which was also based around the theme "water" (but with a completely different angle)? [From WWF fishmen out in the wild]

We zaten overvol.

Nice assignment

Picture this: for The Landscapegroup, a communication buro, I had to takes pictures on the Agribex Farmers Fair in Brussels.

Doesn't sound so appealing. Well, you might be surprised, the stand I had picture was beautifully designed by Willy Hebbrecht (who urgently needs a portfolio site according to me...)

Immediately going to a fair turned into a nicer experience. Really. Tiny details in the plugs, or the design seats one never saw before. Suddenly my assignment turned into something much more daring: picture it right.

Here are the results.

For Toro.

Willy Hebbrecht btw you should google. Nice achievements..

How To... Make This Chalkboard Wall Calendar

12.07.wall_calendar.jpg Personal schedules can get completely out of whack this time of year. Keep it all right in front of you with a giant Chalkboard Wall Calendar. Learn how to make the one pictured above here, from Martha Stewart...

All it takes is black and white chalkboard paint. Start with solid black and gradually lighten random squares by mixing in degrees of white. Even when you're not using the calendar, it makes for a bold, graphic accent wall.

Belgian Design Forum

Picture 1-31
A while ago I already mentioned the launch of the BelgianDesignForum.
Today I received an invite for their event 'Service Design'
At 100 euro (and free for students) it is a cheap* event with yet some interesting people.
And with a walking dinner afterwards, and plenty of room to meet some design-freaks :)

(compared to 500 euro marketing days...)

A Bridge for Contemporary Art

Interesting to expand exhibitions to abroad...:

A Global Call to Artists has been posted at http://becagallery.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/11/beca-gallery--1.html

New Orleans, LA, USA – A new programme for emerging contemporary art has planted itself among the arts and cultural renewal of New Orleans, LA, a city which has historically been one of the most international of US cities. In the midst of the post-Katrina landscape BECA gallery is surfacing as a bridge by which emerging contemporary art flows between New Orleans and the larger contemporary art community abroad. The gallery is an 1100 square foot renovated warehouse space situated in the heart of the New Orleans arts district. It is located directly across the street from the Contemporary Arts Center and within close walking distance to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. BECA gallery will host 12 exhibits each year. Six exhibits feature local emerging contemporary art and 6 exhibits feature international emerging contemporary art.

The gallery was founded by co-directors Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough as a place for both innovative local and international emerging contemporary art to grow and flourish in an environment that is accommodating to both artists and collectors. A unique component of the gallery program focuses on the introduction of innovative international contemporary art to the city of New Orleans and its surrounding region via physical exhibits as well as future virtual exhibits and exchange partnerships with other galleries and projects. The latter will serve both future local artist members as well as those artists exhibiting from abroad.

The theme of the gallery’s first international exhibition, opening February 9, 2008, is Connection curated by Caroline Worthington, Curator of Art, York Museums Trust, York Art Gallery. She looks forward to her pioneering position and writes, “As BECA gallery’s first international curator, it seems to me that the theme of connections is an obvious choice to reflect the aspirations for their programme. Working from the UK, I’ll be weaving together those invisible threads that spin outwards from each of us, connecting you with each other as well as to BECA and me.

Mine Interactive Magazine

Picture 1-30
There certainly not the first nor the last, but Mine launched an 'interactive magazine'

At nr2 now, I found myself laughing a lot with their links to the funniest videos on YouTube.
Apparently there is a car to win. I didn't figure out how, though... :)
In a way a traditional 'adaption': putting a magazine online, yet, I still like the idea of scrolling through pages, while being able to go 'deeper' into it.

Pictobrowser updated

Picture 2-24

I still love to use Pictobrowser a lot, it is an easy tool to integrate Flickr in a fast way.
It's the perfect workflow: taking pic, importing them in Aperture (or Lightroom for that matter) and then with the FlickrExport plugin transferring them to Flickr. And with some clicks, featuring them on your website.

Some clicks or some more, as Pictobrowser got updated: you can easily change the look and feel of your slideshow. Amazingly cool!
They're also announcing Pictomanager, yet the domain is still empty, and no news on what exactly it is. Worth following up.

one laptop per child: gift idea n7

Logo V2
This one is a rather expensive gift, yet, again, a bunch of others are profiting from your present.

Give a laptop and get one (you can give to your littl' one)
Unfortunately only in the US, but as you all get these wonderful iPhones in the country, I am sure you can get one of these too...

From now through December 31, 2007, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. This is the first time the revolutionary XO laptop has been made available to the general public. For a donation of $399, one XO laptop will be sent to empower a child in a developing nation and one will be sent to the child in your life in recognition of your contribution. $200 of your donation is tax-deductible (your $399 donation minus the fair market value of the XO laptop you will be receiving).

All info on Laptopgiving.org

Apple presents: One day discount event, (giftidea n7)

As mentioned before, I wouldn't mind anyone giving me an Apple iPhone.
The thing isn't available in Belgium, yet, it shouldn't stop you from checking the Apple shop today, as it is 'shopping day' today with great discounts.
I shopped last year and bought myself an Airport Express at 89 euro instead of 119.
So it is really worth checking out, iPods don't drop so much in price, but all other accessories are worth considering buying it today.
JBL On Time Speakers at 144 instead of 229 for example.

(You can click on the banner on the left to get into the right page straight away)

MadGirlNancy, giftidea n6

Picture 4-14

A truly charming story of the people behind MadGirlNancy:

We travelled the world, came back after some months and then decided this wasn't the life we wanted to lead.
So we took our chances, sold everything and went back to Thailand to make our own collection of bags.
Meanwhile we present collection 2.
We achieved our dream: half a year in Belgium and half a year in Thailand.

Their story makes me smile and convinces me to go for my dreams.
Meanwhile I also like their bags, key rings, tees and many more.
A pity their collection pics are rather small online...

Perfect holiday gift though. So go and check it out ;)

Gift Idea n5: Mobiles

Anyone who wants to bring me an iPhone from the States is welcomed...
Meanwhile I can advise you these:

A phone at 25 euro... Perfect for the kids or grand-parents. And actually it is pretty 'cool' as it has only basic functions. It doesn't waste battery like the others.

Or the prada... Just plain beauty...

Gift Idea (n4): Perfect Christmas present: Buy some carbon

Picture 2-23
This is your situation: you need to buy a present for some family/friend/cousin/nephew/mum/grandmom/blogger/whatever and he/she has everything. We mean 'EVERYTHING'.

Sure you recognize this situation... Heck, you have EVERYTHING yourself (except that fancy iPhone nobody is going to buy you for your christmas anyway...)

Your problem: you don't know what to buy.
Your solution: 1) spend hours and hours for the perfect gift and be afraid of ending up with something he/she already has, or wasn't exactly the thing he/she wanted 2) buy a piece of junk that will make them unhappy anyway, 3) buy a lousy voucher that will make you look like 'I didn't know what to buy so I bought this lousy voucher'-loser. (voucher are so nineties...)

I have a real solution for you:

Buy some rainforest!
Advantages:
-It's ecological
-It's original
-It's tax-deductible ;)
-Always good: Your WWF cousin, your gay neighbors, or your nearly married friends, they'll all love it. (except your grand mom who doesn't understand it) (Imagine: you'll be giving some people their first piece of land ever)
-It's worth the 50 euro/piece as you'll be saving 300 species of beautiful (or ugly) bugs and flowers. And most of all, so you'll be saving some oxygen for later. (Yes, it's also a present for yourself.)

The coolest (geekiest) part of it? You can check your/his/her piece of land on Google Earth

(Tx to C for bringing this up)

Gift Ideas (n3): Etsy

Iusb 760X100.5206621-1
Call me extremely late, but I (re)discovered Etsy.

When browsing the site in the early beginning of its existence, the self made stuff shown wasn't my kind of stuff.
But today, many others are selling their stuff...
Take Working Class Heroes, with their beautiful vilt covers for iphone, ipod, or laptops.

Other items I extremely liked:

Il 430Xn.14371169

Il 430Xn.14332038

Il 430Xn.12721277

Il 430Xn.13542713
Il 430Xn.13736805

Can't wait to have their gift guides online again.

Heerlijk Hoorspel (Gift Idea n2)

Picture 1-29Few days ago I got a mail asking me if I wanted to receive 'Heerlijk Hoorspel'
As somewhere mentioned in a disclaimer on this site, I don't mind people sending marketing stuff. As long as they respect my 'If I don't like it I'll neglect it' warning.
I have neglected some stuff in the past.

But not this one! Nono!
I received 'Wilde Zwanen' yesterday. I intended to put it away for my littl' bro's christmas.
That was until I decided to check it out first.
Imagine this: 4 people (roommates, my love and me) sitting in our living room at 12pm, listening to Hans Christian Andersen, told by Warre Borgmans.
First C. was making fun at me 'You're actually dancing to this' but minutes later, when I said I was going to buy this for a bunch of other kids and adults, she looked at me saying 'I want it too...'
It is sooooo crazy cool, I really am going to buy it for that whole bunch of people, it's the perfect christmas present.
Even for adults (with a kid's mind that is ;) )

Some details:
Warre Borgmans tells the story, Peter Van de Veire is a dead DJ, Gene Bervoets is a bishop, Frank Focketeyn a ghost, and here are many more.
It takes (unfortunately not more than) an hour and is split in 3 pieces, making it perfect for a bed time story, but also for a silent sunday afternoon (when combined with the online games)
It fits in the cd player of your car, shortening your drive to grandmom, and will not bother you to listen along.
Why? Because it's crazy cool, features some pipikaka sing-a-long-songs, and has some hidden 'you have to know' items that your children won't get but will make you smile.
At 20 euro it's a bargain: you receive a cd, a little booklet with the original story, and the adapted one, with beautiful graphics.

I am totally in love with it. (And almost running to the shop for the other one they released)

You can check out the website for some video and audio. (But at the time writing, something seems wrong with that.)

Gift ideas (n1)

ZoomAs holidays are nearing I'll be adding some gift ideas for those in search for an original present.

(Not to mention most of this stuff is on my personal wishlist)

First on the list: Threadless.com with their numerous fancy T-shirts. At the low dollar rate and prices of 10$, pretty cheap presents to buy. Perfect for the littl' bro or nephew. With a few extra you can lighten up some other people too as occasional present.

Pecha Kucha, v1

C made a nice sum up of things that were superb lat night at Pecha Kucha Brussels.
With more than enough people to attend, the event turned out a success I think.

What's Pecha Kucha, you ask?
Clearly the reporter who called me during the day didn't do his research to well...
No, it isn't a 'how to learn how to present'-event.
Instead it is a daring challenge for the speaker to explain what he or she is busy with, in only 5 minutes, during 20 slides.
The subject? Could be anything.
From their site:

Pecha Kucha, a Japanese expression for the sound of conversation, is a series of “show and tell evenings” for designers, architects, artists, creatives, … started by Klein Dytham Architecture in Tokyo.
Since 2003, groups have sprung up in cities all over the world (over 80 so far) and adopted the Pecha Kucha format: each presenter has 20 slides which are displayed for 20 seconds each.

10 speakers instead of 15, who'd talk 20 seconds on 20 slides.
I liked it. For my favs, look at Soundscapes (though, after hearing Jan Kriekels for too many times, I'd leave him out of my list. Dunno why but I kind of think it is strange that when he talks about sustainability during his whole presentation, he always ends up with their 'Burning Man' project, where they burn almost half a rainforest...)

My remarks about the event?
I'd advise Nando to stick to the format of 10 people instead of 15. Longer is not necessary in my eyes: I got enough input for one night.
And the location was kind of hyped, yet not particularly perfect. I guess that had to do with the overwhelming response to the event.
(Similar to our 'find a parking spot' problem...)

Am I going to the second Pecha Kucha? Certainly!

Boopsie

Boopsie is a free downloadable thin client that sits between your mobile device and dozens of useful sites (or channels). It is compatible with Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Blackberry, the iPhone, and Symbian so as long as your phone is a little more advanced than a flip phone, you should be able to use it.
Once you have it loaded, it makes a data connection and from there you can choose any number of
channels and search quicker than ever.

Crazy grandmom

3733318266

Imagine your grandmom paragliding...
Now imagine her being age 100...
This one did it. Not to mention the other thing: she benji jumped at age 70.

A British pensioner marked her 100th birthday by setting what is believed to be a new world record on Wednesday after paragliding from the top of a mountain range in Cyprus.

Peggy McAlpine, who has seen the reign of five British monarchs and 26 prime ministers, leapt from a 760 metre peak in the Five Finger mountains in northern Cyprus for a 15-minute tandem flight.

The former accountant, who has two daughters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, said she felt no nerves at her birthday stunt.

"I had a wonderful time and I would love to do it again but I will give it a few years and let someone else have a go at beating the record," she told the crowd of around 30 friends, family and press who gathered to watch the bid.

"If no-one else wants a go, I'll do it again when I am 105," she told AFP.

Table talks

Floor coverings

Kerliteplus-1I wish I would have known this earlier. It might have been a cheaper solution for my for floor for the bathroom...

KERLITE PLUS, the ceramic solution you were looking for to renovate that old flooring. With a minimum height increase – from 3 to 3.5mm – KERLITE PLUS has a tough fiberglass mesh backing, doubling its cladding potential. The sky’s the limit for this stunning, minimum weight tile. With Kerlite it’s easy to lay new flooring in your home. But more than that, it’s economic and simple. KERLITE PLUS can be installed directly over existing flooring in wood, ceramic or any other compact type of surface. This is because the underside of the ceramic slab has been reinforced with a dense fiberglass mat. As well as allowing excellent heat conduction, this minimum thickness mesh ensures the tile sticks solidly to the adhesive spread on the substrate. With just 3.5mm additional floor height there’s no need to adjust the level of doors and jambs.

Good newsletters are fun to read

Bizzbymail NlI got myself subscribed to a newsletter 'Bizz by Mail'

And it's great.
It's actually fun to receive it each morning and reading the crisp short messages.

ming (bedrijfsstrategie, rekrutering,...) of in uw leven (promotie afdwingen, vermageren,...).

Nice example of what a good newsletter should be :)

Wesc

Picture 1-26
We found Wesc when shopping in Brussels: a cool set of headphones...

But when googling I found this cool site, with a lot more than headphones. Guess that makes me hold off that buy (Never buy audio from clothing brands.)

WeSC is a street fashion brand for intellectual slackers. WeAretheSuperlativeConspiracy symbolizes what WeSC as a company represents; a group, a family of good and competent people working towards the same ideal and goals.
WeSC is not merely a brand in the fashion industry, but rather a company within the skateboard culture. We create “street fashion”, clothing with roots in a subculture that sets its own rules and follows its own trends.
The company was founded on January 7th 2000, our official “Day of The Superlative Conspiracy”. The founders are all avid skateboarders and snowboarders.

WeSC is addressing people with awareness, regardless of race, religion or financial background. These people all share the values and lifestyle of the WeSC founders. We deliver “life after skate”, a more developed style that also targets people outside the skateboard community, but still shares its values. The particular “We-feeling” and community feeling in the skateboard culture is an ever present important key element in day to day operations of the company.

We are the superlative conspiracy.

Job Opp

If I would like to work in a company again instead of being independent (well, actually, I am looking for a one-day-job-a-week-opportunity) I certainly would want to work for Fisheye.
They're like everything I would want to be involved with: interactive installations, video, podcasting, construction of stands, vj-ing at parties, office design..
Well, the only thing they don't do is web-design :)

They're looking for a motion graphic artist/specialist.
(with a profound knowledge of After Effects) You can contact them at info[at]fisheye.be or on: 09/227 24 52

Deezer

Picture 2-19Deezer is the first juke box on demand totally free in the world!

Our concept is simple:
-Give consumers a full and free access to all their favourite songs
-Pay artists and their producers through a revenue share based on our advertising revenues
-Help discovering new artists through a wide audience

THE revelation of this weekend.
Since I have been in bed due to a strange kind of flue (or something alike...) it has been a welcome distraction.
And when the girl reads this post (trust me she'll read it faster than I can tell...) she'll be delighted.
Not being able to play the songs she likes was something bothering her on Last.FM.
I, on my side, miss the 'guiding aspect' a bit on Deezer.
But then again, it enabled me to listen to Amy Winehouse's older songs.

Found on Smetty's blog, who got it from Commisaresse, who got it from someone else...

Oh, can someone upload that Sarah Bettens cd, since I forgot to buy De Morgen yesterday... Tx :)

No surprise.
But if this test would have added 'Europe' to Belgium and Flanders, what would the result have been?

Surya Vanka.

Microsoft called to invite me for a dinner with Surya Vanka in Le Mess in Elsene, Brussels.
Surya is user experience expert and would reveal a bit on the design secrets of Microsoft.
The Zune, the wonderful Surface Table.. UI always leaves me with wonderful fascination, and it certainly so Surya might

Somehow I turned on the other side of the table due to my late arrival (Heck, finding the spot wasn't that easy I thought it'd be...)
I got great company though, and amused myself chitchatting.
And suddenly great food was served, and the clock pointed 10.30 PM... And I had to run to catch the last train.
Time went so fast, I didn't even met Surya.
Luckily Geert will send me a great PPT, and luckily there is internet and mail to ask those questions I always wanted to know.

I did meet Danny and got introduced to Petra and Caroline and wil certainly see them again next week. (Well, the girls, not Danny ;) )
And there was Pietel, who saved me from the whole train trip to Ghent, and just dropped me. He's such a cutie :)

Dinner.

Wir machen spass, ja Spass!

As always I went to Spass, as their house photographer for the night.
This time the party started a bit strange, but then suddenly I found my feet killing me, and when we jumped into the car, the clock showed 5AM. Ouch!

I love Belgians!

240250903 0Bc620C5B9I already mentioned 'Save Solidarity' which is a petition, and already received almost 50000 signatures.

I love Belgians isn't a petition, it's just a site where you can post a funny pic or a message.
For Walloons and 'Flandriens' who still love Belgium.

So why don't we start wearing black, yellow, or red? And form random Belgian flags in the streets? :)
(Oh, and picture it off course, on your blog...)

Nailing For Dummies

I'm not such a dummy when it comes to nailing (after one year of carpentry for my father that is). However I certainly hit several times my finger instead of the nail.

This is why I like this comcept:
You insert the nail inside the guide tube. Position the tube where you want the nail to be. The large top makes it much easier to manage a hammer slamming down on it. It also protects your precious and very useful fingers. Once the nail is pushed in, simply repeat the process. Your nail will always go in straight and square into its intended target.

Brilliant...

California Chair

Made by Belgian Pieter Maes, California Chair is looking for a solution on how to make a cheap chair.

Generique4-Filtered

The idea started with wanting to make a low-cost easy chair. Using skateboards for the majority of the structure, the price could be reduced significantly. The objective was making them unrecognisable so the chair didn’t have a street connotation. Therefore they’re padded and upholstered in Kvadrat to result in a luxurious and tactile seat.

Successful design I'd say :)

The Hulger Indian Call Centre

icc-dom.jpg

Did you know this?:

Off-shore agents, 'call centre executives' (as they are known locally), have undergone a program of 'culture sensitisation' and have been trained to recognise and understand British regional dialect. They have also been pre-programmed with all the right cultural references (yesterday's crappy weather, the weekend's football scores, etc.) so can chat easily and realistically with you.

Already people think 'Indian' when they hear of 'call centres'. Bangalore has become a global by-word for technological sweatshops.

As working hours are mapped to UK time, dealing with callers runs long into the night, with weary operators having to deal with 'irate customers' whilst their partners at home have long since gone to bed. The pressure and awkward hours effect relationships profoundly and India is feeling it.

But despite the mind-numbing repetitive work, the profession is relatively very well paid, with operators often being chauffeured to and from work. It is estimated that 5.4% of India's GDP is attributable to IT business outsourcing so it's not insignificant. With outsourcing so successful, and with a management and operational infrastructure in place, India is now also enjoying a bigger piece of the pie with companies like Microsoft, Intel, Motorola, Philips, etc. operating significant innovation and R&D centres in the country.

They're looking for artists...

„Syndrome“ is an exhibition-project by young artists from various European countries, who work on current cultural environments and their influences on the collective consciousness of communities. The exhibition will show a wide range of approaches to this field, ranging from installations, performances, theatre, photographie and video to studies in architecture and urbanism. The project itself is to be understood as a reaction to processes which have been termed as modern: the rise of migrations and hybrid and highly unstable environments. Syndrome is thus also intended as a laboratory of present cultural processes. The artists participating in Syndrome refer to to the experiences of fragmentation and crisis of the individual in communities which have been constructed along the breaking up of societal legitamized structures, codes and symbols i.e. the experience of everyday life. The exhibition will show the different stops of the laboratory and visitors will walk through the syndromes of various modern lifes.

'Saving Seeds'

P1000601 Copy [1]'Saving Seeds' is a project started by some enthousiastics.
Prof Van Cottem, consultant for Unicef, is gathering as much seeds as possible for little gardens in fugutive camps in the Sahara in Algeria.
It's a simple way to collect your seeds of peppers, eggplants, avocado's, and others, dry them and send them to the professor.
In February 2008 these seeds will be planted to ensure a food supplement for the local inhabitants.

Why Prof Van Cottem doesn't want to work with seeds suppliers you're probably wondering.
Because of business interests.
So don't throw those pits, send them to Beeweg 36 B 9080 Zaffelare

Sideluck Potshow

Index LogoSlideluck Potshow is a non-profit slideshow and potluck for members of arts, photography, and media communities. Participants bring food, drink, and up to five minutes worth of slides. The evening begins with a couple hours of dining on the home-cooked delights of participants, while drinking and mingling. It is not uncommon to arrive with, for example, a full-bodied bottle of wine, some vegetable samosas, Thai green curry, pumpkin ravioli, or some rosemary lamb chops. All guests are asked to contribute as the event is entirely dependent on participation. Following the potluck, the lights are dimmed, the crowd is hushed, and a spectacular slideshow commences.

Slideluck Potshow is a forum for exposing artists, curators and editors to new work, while infusing the arts community with a non-commercial vitality and refreshing exchange. Photojournalists, painters, designers, sculptors, fashion and fine art photographers all show their work alongside one another in a relaxed and spirited atmosphere. Presenters range from the very accomplished to those who have never shown work publicly before, but regardless of status, none is allotted more than five minutes for their slideshow. Past participants include; Elliott Erwitt, Chris Buck, Alec Soth, Martin Schoeller, Doug Menuez, Alex Majoli, Alistair Thain, Bruce Gilden, and Eugene Mirman.

Re-design of Soundscapes

Picture 3-21
While the design is nearly finished (some minor bugs when installing and adapting the new K2 theme), C keeps on whispering 'It's sooooo beautiful'. She even got me jealous ;)
Hope you like the new Soundscapes look.
(Yeayeah, we'll be changing the header soon as it is a bit to tall for smaller screens)

Note: K2 is fabulous yet gives some headaches once in a while...
-We cannot manage to change 'Blogroll' into another title (it appears twice then)
-When you call for an archive page the man title inside the template always refers to August, which is also when you click on another month. Strange...

Ine on Mo-magazine

Picture 2-16Few days ago I got mail by Mo-magazine if they could feature some pics on their newly started photoblog.
So freshly on their blog: Iraq before the war (or Iraq under embargo, as you prefer.)

Info: back in april 2002, a friend journalist and I left for Iraq. Iraq was still ruled by Saddam back then (reminder: in March 2003 the US invaded Iraq again, and Saddam was captured)
In 2002, Iraq was suffering a worldwide UN embargo since 1990, and while this should have targeted Saddam, the big losers were the citizens of Iraq. Critics estimate that more than 500,000 Iraqi children died as a result of the sanctions (info).

My girlfriend wants me to take her to a restaurant...

Ferran Adria-1Quite one, we'll have to wait for half a year before we can get in (and we'll need to fly to Barcelona): elBulli serves molecular cuisine by Ferran Adrià

2003. Science department in elBullitaller. Our interest in establishing a dialogue with science began to become consolidated in 2003 when we contacted Pere Castells, a scientist and gourmet. At first, the relationship was informal, but as the Alícia Foundation project took shape, it gradually took on a more professional nature, right up to the implementation of the science department, which represented a bridge between the Workshop and Alícia. With Pere Castells and Íngrid Farré, who joined soon afterwards, we began by organising ourselves, looking for a work structure, establishing contacts with manufacturers of food products, new devices or instruments, gathering information and reading books, and so on. From 2004 onwards, Pere and Íngrid carried on this research in Alícia. We also analysed the world of textures that we had created in recent years (foams, hot jellies, clouds, airs, texlavazza, spherification, etc.), and we decided to find out why these preparations were possible, what physical and chemical processes were involved and how the products that made these textures possible acted. All this was because of our conviction that awareness of the scientific processes involved in cooking constituted the basis for evolution.

Meanwhile I'll buy her one of his books ;)

Interview with Boutique Vizique

portret-H&S-(c)-Koen-Broos.jpgPlease meet Boutique Vizique! Boutique Vizique is Hendrik Leper and Stijn Schiffeleers, plus a bunch of other artists or experts they invite to collaborate with them once in a while.

Stijn and Hendrik are long known collegues in Ghent with whom I studied at the KASK.
Happy to see them featured on 'We make money not art'

Stijn and Hendrik come from Ghent. If you're into new media art, creativity and design you might have heard of that small-ish Belgian city. They trained as photographer, started working mostly with video, collaborated with sound artists and are now developing interactive installations. The kind we like: playful, witty and beautifully executed.

For ten days solid, Belgian and international fashion designers, fashion students at the Flemish Fashion Departments present their work in shop windows all over the city. Taking the general idea of a shop window to the creative limit, all sorts of shop windows get radically redressed, stocked with surprising goods or transformed into imaginative playgrounds.
VITRINE 2007 - SURFACES

This year’s theme for VITRINE will be SURFACES, in which the participants are challenged to make their own surface in the city centre, think about other and new surfaces, projections, the backstage, the catwalk, or more intimate with a pattern or embroidery...

Paradise now...

Picture 1-18Yesterday we watched 'Paradise now' a movie on a day in the life of 2 suicide bombers. I admit, I still am attracted to movies coming from Israel or Palestine.

PARADISE NOW" is the story of two young Palestinian men as they embark upon what may be the last 48 hours of their lives. On a typical day in the West Bank city of Nablus, where daily life grinds on amidst crushing poverty and the occasional rocket blast, we meet two childhood best friends, Saïd (Kais Nashef) and Khaled (Ali Suliman), who pass time drinking tea, smoking a hookah, and working dead-end menial jobs as auto mechanics.

Saïd is approached by middle-aged Jamal (Amer Hlehel), a point man for an unnamed Palestinian organization, who informs Saïd that he and Khaled have been chosen to carry out a strike in Tel Aviv. They have been chosen for this mission as a team, because each had expressed a wish that if either is to die a martyr, the other would want to die alongside his best friend.

"PARADISE NOW" follows two Palestinian childhood friends who have been recruited for a strike on Tel Aviv and focuses on their last days together. When they are intercepted at the Israeli border and separated from their handlers, a young woman who discovers their plan causes them to reconsider their actions.

I really wondered how this controversial movie would handle such a political theme.
I was silently surprised to see how the director really showed whole lot of reality and stupidity. On both sides.
And meanwhile it still had some hilarious scenes.
The story line is rather thin, and it is certainly a slow film but yet I never felt it during the movie.

When I left for Israel and for the Palestinian territories, I remember asking Yasser several times 'How can someone decide to give up life?'
After 2 years living over there I can say I think I understand how someone can come to such an act. For someone not having lived there, this movie truly gives a worthwhile insight.

Quote I remember best?: 'They manage to be the occupier and the victim in the same moment, ..., I cannot do but die and kill.'
Things that struck me: it is filmed in real places, and gives a really accurate view on how life is over there.
Feelings I remember myself: when crossing a checkpoint, you feel the humiliation and the hate growing inside yourself. The film reflects it well.

I had to smile when seeing Palestine on my screen, recalling reality in my head.
And how I long to go back.
To both sides...

Really worth seeing!
-When you rent the dvd do check the extra's like the making of. You'll see some difficulties they had making it.-

DehaenevoorkantThe recently released Jeanlucdehaene.blogspot.com is a spoof. I wonder how long it will take before this 'fake jeanluc' //fakesteve gets public.
The articles are hilarious and well written. And for that sake only worth to be in your feedreader.
One of my favorites today in mine.
Well done!

Mental reminder: My house My architect

On Sept 29 and 30, it's openhouse in more than 200 houses. Have to check as the neighbors across the street are apparently amongst them (and some others I'd like to see.)

Libelle most beautiful travel picture contest: vote on me :)

3-1Last month Libelle launched a picture contest 'best travel picture', and I participated.

Today I got a phone call saying 'Did you know you're selected by Libelle and your picture is featured in the magazine this week?'
So apparently I am in their top 10 short list (selected out of 2700 pics) and now you! can vote on me.
That is if you like the picture of course :)
So, please, if you like my pic, and you think I deserve a trip to Mexico, vote.

Update: What is there in for you, you wonder. Well, I just noticed there is more than one price: The trip to Mexico also contains a digital coolpix of Nikon.
So dear readers, if I happen to win the trip to Mexico, I will it give away to one of you.(*)
So vote for me, and leave a comment here.

Drink a Cointreaupolitan...

Here's the manual for a Cointreaupolitan
And below is our version of, titled 'Reality check' ;)

Looks a bit different but the taste stays the same of course, and it has to be said: I was nicely surprised by the cocktail, so were the friends around.
It is certainly a cocktail that will appeal more to women than to men, mainly because of the pink, but also because of its sweet taste, I guess.
A should try.
What it tastes like? Mmmm reminds me of the Bacardi Breezers.
Thus indeed a perfect appetizer.
So spice up that old cointreau that's getting dust in your father's bar.
Hat tips: a bit more cointreau than ice, and it already tastes a bit spicier.
But start in time, as it does take some preparation and very seldom you have that handsome bartender hanging around...

Disclaimer: The nice folks at Duval Guillaume sent me the Cointrauversial set to test.

Diesels new fragrances: win one here!

1214295877 81Ccadc4CdFew weeks ago the guys at Diesel mailed me to ask if they could send me a new perfume.

I told them I wanted the liberty 'not to review it' because I really wasn't willing to write on something that might stink.

Today I received two bottles, a men's and female's version of their new soon to be released fragrance of 'Fuel for life'.
I guess they think I am man ;) (just jokin' of course I know they send 2 fragrances to test!)
Anyhow, nor me or my girlfriend are willing to walk around with a men's perfume.
So we decided to call in our neighbour as test-animal.
The women in the house smelled at the test-object and unanimously decided that he smelled very hot after a while.
The man himself decided after half an hour that he wouldn't mind a colleague wearing it.
And another half an hour he mentioned he might jump on that colleague...
(Note: our neighbor is gay, so don't think the fragrance will make you jump sides!)
For those interested in the way it smells: according to my roommate the man's perfume reminds her of Ralph Loren Sport.
I have to admit: I am not such an expert in men's perfumes...

We also tried the woman's fragrance.
Also here the perfume got better after a while.
I am a really difficult person (my mother and girlfriend will agree on that one) and my first criteria in choosing a fragrance is the 'head-ache test'.
There are way to many perfumes that make you head ache. I happen to be extremely sensitive to it, and I was happy to find out Diesels Fuel for Life passed that test (It saved me from an evening of pain ;) )
The perfume isn't what I would wear, it is too 'sweet' for me (and actually I happen to have one that makes my girlfriend hot, so I am not switching in the first months ;) ) But we again agreed that it smells 'sexy'.

You want to know more on the Fuel for Life perfumes? Well, they only get launched in 2 days.. Find out more here and watch the beautiful weird ads.

I am giving away the female fragrance on this blog (We can all agree that our test-animals boyfriend gets the male version to seduce his friend)
(What to do, you wonder? Write me something on 'Fuel for life', a poem, a short story, whatever. The best one wins.)

Disclaimer: the bottles were send to me by Diesel to test, and to review.

What kind of personality disorder do you have?

You May Be a Bit Antisocial...
Antisocial? That may be a bit of an understatement.
You think rules are meant to be broken - and with gusto!
Having no fear, you don't even think about consequences.
But people love you anyway... you've got a boatload of charm.

What Personality Disorder Are You?

Off the Grid

offthegrid.jpgA two-year project, " Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa" is a 64-minute documentary that looks at a small, hardscrabble community in the New Mexico desert of denizens who have chosen a life of independence outside the normal conformities and boundaries of modern society.

It's a study of the runaways, vets and voluntary outcasts who live there and what happens when a community removes itself from mainstream civilization. Rather than becoming uncivilized, instead it enforces its own sense of law and order, right and wrong. When confronted with a thief in their midst, the well-armed and opinionated citizenry must grapple with instilling ad-hoc law and order in which justice is served while humanity is preserved.

"Off the Grid" premiered at the Slamdance FIlm Festival in January and has been touring the festival circuit since. Shooting began in 2005 and is principally the creation of filmmakers Eric Juhola and Randy and Jeremy Stulberg. A DVD should be available soon. In the meantime, watch the 2:24 trailer or catch the NY premiere at Lincoln Center this Thursday, 15 August 2006, or next week as part of Slamdance's run of docs at the IFC on 21 August 2007.

Gotta see the trailer! Really harsh...

Easymap

bleisinger_easymap.jpg Maps made out of paper are easily damaged by excessive folding, which decreases legibility. Also, they are often very complicated to fold. Easymap helps solve these problems, because it's a city or road map printed on cloth. The textile material simplifies the handling while reading and folding, as well as extends the life span of the product.

Why didn't anyone think of this earlier??

Coloring for adults.

Malbuch LargeIn the series: first look before you buy: this coloring book ain't the one you'd expect.

The „Colouring Book – modern ordnance“ by the artist Katharina Arndt presents 124 drawings of the very latest, modern, military equipment regarding such different areas as hand guns, helicopters, bombers, ships, aircraft carriers, submarines, knifes, grenades, mines, bombs, torpedos, missiles, cruise missiles, howitzers, satellites, combat robots, drones, off-road vehicles, HGVs and tanks. Ordnance that all nations need to wage their wars.
The pictures of the ordnance are displayed without names or captions - only the drawings to be coloured are given.

The fact that this military reality is taken for granted in each country is reflected in the choice of a children´s colouring book.

More here.
