Arafat 'being tested for virus'

Arafat 'being tested for virus':
Aides to the Palestinian leader say doctors examining him in a hospital near Paris are now checking for a viral infection.

I wonder if he has the same virus that keeps me at home these days.
They didn't give me a heli to the airport, nor press attention.
So for sure I know I am just a simple soul on this world -grinning-

Google confirms Google Desktop for Mac

Google confirms Google Desktop for Mac:
According to a Reuters story, Google CEO Eric Schmidt confirmed on Friday that the company intends to build a Mac version of Google Desktop, which enables users to search their e-mail messages, files, Web browser histories, chat logs and more. He admitted, however, that such an undertaking will require the Mac version to be "rebuilt from the ground up" because of the "fundamental differences" between Mac OS X and Windows. No timetable was set for its release. The Windows version was published earlier this month.

It is a funny thing to do, since Apple releases something similar in their Mac Os X Tiger...
Anyhow I am not complaining at all.
-Although I am sure I would prefer Apple's tool instead of Googles, and that is not because I am an Apple-freak, but just because of what Google does with their tools: spy and give you loads of advertisement instead.
Imagine, they will be able to see EVERYTHING that is in your harddisk. Because why else would they do it? Because they like you?-

NetNewsWire

NetNewsWire took an important decision.
It left its tool to post to a blog out of is update and instead offers a link that opens your preferred program.

Why is it clever? Because from now on, they don't have to spend any time in upgrading this tool, and they can focus on other implements -like integrating podcasting-
Back to basics, it is called. And using the tools of others.

It is something that we at PhotoBlog also prefer.
Why start to integrate another chatting tool, when the best one are already out there?
Why not work together with people that know things the best.

The oly thing which is a necessity is to integrate it in the best possible way.
So your users don't end up into something they don't understand.
And to give a proper manual.

Writing one right now for PodCasting through PhotoBlog, withing days on our helpdesk . ;)

'Suicide bomb' in Tel Aviv market

'Suicide bomb' in Tel Aviv market:
At least four people die as a suspected suicide bomb explodes in a market in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

This is the market I go when I go shopping. Not every week -I am not a good cook, as many of you know...-
Strange idea.
But frankly speaking, when you live in such a society, you become real hard, and take away all those thoughts.

Anyhow, an attack in Carmel market is like in the heart of Tel Aviv. It must have been very well planned, since most of the time there are soldiers protecting the area.
It is seconds away from the main shopping street.
Imagine that they explode a bomb in Gent on the Fridaymarket. That is what to compare it to.

Strange or maybe not, but it just happened after Arafat left.
After months of quiet, a bomb explodes.
To me, it shows that in the past it was also possible but stopped by the regime.
Now a regime change -even if it is for short- can show a different attitude.

For sure all checkpoints will be closed soon 'as a security matter'.
It is all in the explanation...

It is a strange feeling.
Feeling worried for my friends in Tel Aviv, and at the same time worry for my friends in the Palestinian Territories.
It is something none of them understand.
Tamar and Sigal sometimes say: you never say sorry for the Israeli's.
I do, I do think of the people walking in that market now, just shopping.
But seconds later the rest pops in my head. How people live now in Rafah.
How a friend of mine lives near the border and every night the shooting starts again.
And then Yasser says I go along with the Israelis.
And like that I will always be the foreigner that looks from aside.
And I just worry for both.

CNN and commercial interest...

Rebecca MacKinnon, the former Tokyo bureau chief of CNN writes about why CNN is broken. She writes that although there is pressure from the administration to spin stories, most of it comes down to pure commercial interests.

Priorities of American Global TV:
Humanity, National Interest, or Commercial Profit?

...When Richard Parsons, the CEO of CNN's parent company Time Warner visited Tokyo in the fall of 2003, he held a Q&A session with a group of Time Warner's Tokyo-based managers whose work ranges from movies, to music sales, to online services, and also to news. I asked him whether he viewed Time Warner's news properties - such as CNN and TIME magazine - to have a special social responsibility for educating the public about current events, or whether CNN was just another commodity like any other product or service sold by Time Warner. He replied that he does not view CNN any differently from any other company owned by Time Warner.

[...]

When I started working for CNN in 1992, things were different. Those were what longtime CNN employees now refer to as the "old days" when the network was run directly by Ted Turner, before the 1996 merger of Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner. "When CNN reported to me, if we needed more money for Kosovo or Baghdad, we'd find it," Ted Turner wrote in the July/August 2004 issue of Washington Monthly. "If we had to bust the budget, we busted the budget. We put journalism first, and that's how we built CNN into something the world wanted to watch." He blames the current situation on the concentration of news media in the hands of a small number of mega-corporations, and blames U.S. government regulators for allowing this to happen. "The loss of independent operators hurts both the media business and its citizen-customers," he argues. "When the ownership of these firms passes to people under pressure to show quick financial results in order to justify the purchase, the corporate emphasis instantly shifts from taking risks to taking profits. When that happens, quality suffers, localism suffers, and democracy itself suffers."

From Joi Ito.

On Not Understanding

I just read this short opinion:
On Not Understanding:
Last night, by a margin of three to two, the voters of Ohio amended their constitution to include this: “Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this state and its political subdivisions. This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage.” Ten other states passed similar measures. In parallel, a high proportion of exit-polled voters said that their decisions were made on the basis of “moral values” rather than on economic or foreign-policy issues. On this, and the election as a whole, I cheerfully admit that I Just Don’t Get It. But then, the United States doesn’t need me to understand it, and still less does it need—nor apparently want—the world’s approval of its actions or, uh, “moral values”. It would be good if America and the world weren’t so badly out of tune, but that’s how it is, and neither has much leverage on the other. But I’m optimistic that we’ll get along better, down the road.

I have to say that I am happy in Belgium.
Just called with one of my best friends.
She is gay, happily together with her girlfriend for several years, and guess what..
They are trying to get a baby and are actually marrying next March.
When we were talking about it, I suddenly said 'Who could have imagined this...'
And who did? Who believed 5 years ago that actually we would get this legal status, and that we would be able to go to the hospital and get pregnant.
It is a wonderful world, and I am happy to live in this country where such a thing is considered normal and equal.
And it is truly scarying what is happening in the world.
'Imagine that within some time they declare it not valid' I said to my friend.
'That is impossible, once you are married, you are. Right?'
Well that is not what happened in California, where Governor Terminator first allowed it, and only days later declared that all marriages were illegal and thus not valid.

As for Belgium, I hope they wait with cancelling the thing for at least til I get married :))))

Arafat 'between life and death'

Arafat 'between life and death':
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is not brain dead - but in a reversible coma, says one of his aides.

Hanging on.
Well, pretty obvious what is happening...
In Arab countries -and Jewish- the death are buried immediately after dying -while in christian countries this takes like a week...-
So Palestinians are preparing what is happening, while Israel is doing the same.
If not, a serious 'balagan' might happen.

UN warns of nuclear terror race:
The UN's chief nuclear inspector warns of a "race against time" to stop terrorists using nuclear weapons.

Well... What to say?
Terror Race. That means that there is another racer to win from.
Us...

It might be a strange remark, but why is somebody else than Europe/America always the bad one?
Why are we allowed to produce all the weapons, as much as we like, as powerful as can be, and if the other one wants the same, it becomes the 'Evil'

Wireless Flower Pot for the Romantics...

Wireless Flower Pot for the Romantics:

Cian Cullinan and Stefan Agamanolis, researchers at the
MIT Media Lab Europe , are working on the One2One project, a technological infrastructure to create or reinforce a sense of presence and togetherness between two distant persons.

Their Floral Display is a plastic flower pot with a pink flower that blooms when Cian's girlfriend, Ciara, logs into her computer, and closes when she leaves.

The pot hides a simple radio transceiver and some motors that allow the flower to be opened and closed on command. The pot communicates wirelessly to a nearby computer that checks Ciara's login status at regular intervals.

Isn't it cute... Grin

The reason why NOT to go to Iraq these days

My Friend, the Kidnap Victim:
He turned out of the front gate, took the first right -- as most of us do -- and a car stopped in front of him and a tailing car pulled in behind him. Four men with pistols jumped out and three of them managed to force their way into the car, putting guns to the heads of John, his driver and his translator.... We're not sure what all happened during his captivity, but he was able to persuade his captors that he was an Australian and a friend to the resistance and not to the Americans.

People asked me if I wanted to go back.
Yep I do. But nope not now...
I cannot imagine myself being kidnapped and having to hope for a bullet instead of a knife.

Tip of the week...

Per Aquum Underwater Spa Treatment Rooms:

To tell you the truth, I'm a little squeamish about most spas. I go for the surrounding scenery and to spend time with stressed out friends, but rather dread the experience of entering into those massage and hydrotherapy rooms that look like clinics, all white and antiseptic. I don't know how I'm supposed to relax in a treatment room that resembles a gynecologist's office. My spa phobia became most acute after a nightmarish experience of watching my best friend running naked and screaming down the hallway of a spa after being poisoned by aromatherapy oils she was wildly allergic to. She survived, but we don't speak of it.

Still, I'd have no trouble at all going into one of these underwater treatment rooms at the new Per Aquum Spa on the island of Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives. These rooms are actually built below the Indian Ocean, so what you look out at isn't a mere fish tank made to give you the impression of being surrounded by the sea. You're thirty feet below, looking at whatever sea life happens to wander by the windows. The Huvafen Fushi Spa Menu includes full day and half day programs, as well as spa partner treatments and treatments designed especially for men. I could go for everything on the menu (minus the aromatherapy), but especially the Japanese Silk Booster Facial With Eye Zone Therapy.

As for accommodations, it looks like pure luxury at the Huvafen Fushi resort, which offers bungalows on the beach, lagoon, or ocean. I just love the idea of rolling out of bed and into the warm sea.

Dutch anti-terror raid nets two

Dutch anti-terror raid nets two:
A police anti-terror raid in The Hague ends with the surrender of two men after a violent 14-hour siege.

My mom is eating french fries next to me, our 'Friday'night habit on Thurday
'I don't think this will happen to us' she mumbles.
'This' is what is happening in The Hague.
Mum, you say I am naive... What about yourself?

Brussels is the centre of Europe, has NATO centers, Europe HeadQuarters and important meetings of UN.
Perfect targets, I dare to say.

When it comes to contra-attacks, the first mosque was already targeted last night in the 'Kempen' and the Vlaams Blok has more votes than I dare to say.

We are closer than one dares to recognize.

PhotoBlog is getting big

PhotoBlog started out as a little project, ambitious in ideas, but small in resources.
One year later the basic idea of photoblogging became a huge community.
The platform has extended with audio and communication features.

We need to compare ourselves to other platforms and make an evaluation.

Truly I believe in our format. It fits perfect.
Minuses are easy to find: multiple upload, open API, and more extensive tags and info.
But I think PhotoBlog is becoming adult now...
Printing and video implementation together with that API should make a serious client...

And than a next thing.
And a next, and another... ;)

The Fight for Arafat’s Fortune Begins

Arafat is one of the worlds richest men.

Sources close to the Palestinian leadership said a bitter fight had broken out over who should control the ailing leader’s fortune estimated to be between $4.2 billion and $6.5 billion.

Sources said Arafat has written a will transferring control of his assets to members of his wife’s family. Some of his aides, including former Premier Mahmoud Abbas who has stepped in as interim leader, however, believe the fortune belongs to the “beit al-mal” (public treasury), and should be transferred to the Palestinian Authority. The controversy started last week when Suha, Arafat’s wife, asked Muhammad Rashid, Arafat’s confidant and adviser, to prepare a list of the ailing leader’s fortune. According to Palestinian sources Rashid has said he would furnish the list only to the Palestinian Authority.

Sending emails through a thought

That's what I always thought (emphasis added) should be the ultimate interface - your thoughts. There have been many rumors about steering computers with your brain but this is another leap forward:
"A pill-sized brain chip has allowed a quadriplegic man to check e-mail and play computer games using his thoughts. The device can tap into a hundred neurons at a time, and is the most sophisticated such implant tested in humans so far.
Many paralysed people control computers with their eyes or tongue. But muscle function limits these techniques, and they require a lot of training. For over a decade researchers have been trying to find a way to tap directly into thoughts.
In June 2004, surgeons implanted a device containing 100 electrodes into the motor cortex of a 24-year-old quadriplegic. The device, called the BrainGate, was developed by the company Cyberkinetics, based in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Each electrode taps into a neuron in the patient's brain."

Are the worst SF movies becoming reality...

Calling Yasser

One of my good friends is living in Dheisheh, Bethlehem, West Bank.
His name is Yasser. Named after...

We had a long conversation on the other Yasser's death.
'He did many things I didn't agree with, but I have to tell you, I am sad, very sad.'

I guess we, in the West, don't realize what happened. For the Palestinians, their symbol of struggle, the guy that kept on going, died.
In very unclear circumstances. -Was he poisoned, did he have aids, or another disease-
The question now is, if the hope which he represented, died as well.

In Yasser's eye, this is what happened. Things will get worse.
What will happen with the Intifada, which resulted in an economic disaster after 4 years of fighting against a giant. Has the battle silently ended. WIll Israelis succeed in putting a wall that surrounds the area.
Or will another uprooting grow and finally end in a civil war?

'Or something new, positive will happen?'
Inshallah.

Futurephone-To-Podcast:

On videopodding:

Warren Ellis says:

If you've got a podcast grabber like iPodder, aim it at this link. And you should grab a .3gp video, shot with the Nokia 7610 cameraphone, that I shot in North Beach, San Francisco a couple of weeks ago while waiting for Laurenn McCubbin to pick me up in her little chariot. .3gp is viewable in a current version of Quicktime -- older versions will probably call out for the .3gp plugin. Obviously, this isn't going to be much use if you have the iPodder-iTunes-iPod direct filling set up. But it illustrates how easily you can shoot video, dump it into a file and broadcast it.

Belgium is sick... Or am I?

Some days ago I was sitting in the car with a friend.
Days before I had said something that seems to have triggered her mind.
'Why do you say there is something wrong with Belgium?'
Because there is...
'I think something is wrong with you.'
Probably... But still Belgium is sick.

She couldn't live with that idea. And suddenly it was about me, how I have a problem, and how I cannot settle.

Well that's true, I didn't find my peace yet.
But so what?
In Israel I was the youngest in my class. In Belgium I would be the oldest. So what?
If I am everlasting student in Belgium, then it is very relative.
Should I feel bad about that?
Should I be working a nine-to-five job for a pension in the end of my life?
A pension is is not likely to be there.
'Well, off course it will be there, they cannot not give it.'
Excuse me... Did you ever hear about Argentinia???
That money doesn't exist by the time we are old.

Yeahyeah, our liberate country, that gives gays the right to marry.
But excuse me, are we so much better than US, with our Vlaams Blok Belang.

And oops, our problems with jobs... or our very nice taxes on entrepeneurship.
Yep... DHL left, Renault knew it already 7 years ago, and others will follow. Leaving many without a job.

Or let's talk about the nice tricks our government makes with money:
We don't talk about begroting. No, we talk about begrotingstekort...
And how to solve it.
But really solve it? Nonono, we do little fiscal tricks.
Like for example, not giving the scholarships we had to give last year this year. No let's give them next year.
So they come on the expenses of that year.

Resulting in a higher deficit next year.
But that's a problem for later...

She is right, my friend, Belgium is the best country in the world.
Because of it's environment, and its culture, and its chocolate and many other things.
But those reasons are ONLY emotional,
because it is MY country, and I was raised here, with these habits and culture.

If we were not emotional, we would go to a country where economics are hopeful, and workers are cheap, houses still affordable.
We would be kings and queens with our savings. And life would be rich.

But we would miss too many things. Family, friends, habits and culture.
So we stay or come back...

Thanks to idiots with credit cards, spam kingpins rake in $100,000's a month

Mark Frauenfelder:
From Tampa Bay Online's coverage of the spammer trial:

As one of the world's most prolific spammers, Jeremy Jaynes pumped out at least 10 million e-mails a day with the help of 16 high-speed lines, the kind of Internet capacity a 1,000-employee company would need. [..] In a typical month, prosecutors said during the trial, Jaynes might receive 10,000 to 17,000 credit card orders, thus making money on perhaps only one of every 30,000 e-mails he sent out. But he earned $40 a pop, and the undertaking was so vast that Jaynes could still pull in $400,000 to $750,000 a month, while spending perhaps $50,000 on bandwidth and other overhead, McGuire said. "When you're marketing to the world, there are enough idiots out there" who will be suckered in, McGuire said in an interview.

Put PowerPoint on your iPod Photo

powepoint ipod

This week's How-To is a quick and simple one if you have an iPod Photo and use PowerPoint or Keynote and don't want to lug around a computer; you can just plug in to a projector or a TV. This will also work with a Portable Media Center, or any other photo playing device that can be a video source.

Moko just send an update on the Breastawareness exhibition in Bejing. The exhibit was very successful in Beijing and there were many reports about it on internet, newspaper and TV.  There is a special theme on the project on Trends Health magazine's website.

Trip to Israel

My trip to Israel ended, as fast as it started.
I went on invitation of the consul to present our SnowBlog Project to the guests at the King's Day.
I was honored to be mentioned in his speech, and am so grateful to what he did for the project.

Spending some time with great friends and over-viewing the last 2 years, made me wonder again.
What do I want? Where am I going to?
A woman asked me on the plane back home. 'So you are not planning to come back? So what are the plans for the future?'
Everything is vague. Simply vague.
But I am sure, as ever, things will pass my way, and before I know, I will be as busy as ever.

But now, for one moment I stop and stand still, look in my head and see wonderful faces of true friends on long distance.
I truly miss...

Radio 1 call

R1_hd_salon

Last week my mom called: you have to call Radio 1.
I was triggered. How do they know my moms number at Radio 1???
Grinning.
Anyway, they wanted me in the studio in Jerusalem for an interview.
I mailed them that I won't make it to Jerusalem, since I was running for a flight to Belgium.
So come to our studio's, they said.
Well that's where I'll be...

Sunday, on your radio

Life just goes on

Img_3981
TMR and I in Cafe Hillel in Jerusalem, sipping coffee in cold rainy days.
This cafe was blown up several months ago.
Do we avoid it?
Can we avoid it?
Life just goes on...
This cafe or another, we will never be sure.
So what the heck.

I guess it explains the vitality is Israeli's and Palestinians: life has to be lived and now.

Protect Your Laptop With Style

Careful, this is not yet another “trendy laptop case”. The Knomo bags are not only elegant and stylish, they do in fact offer something more. Each bag includes a tracking-tag system, the Knomo Tracker, which makes it possible to track your bag online in case it gets lost or worse, stolen. Each bag has a unique owner code and by registering it online you will be able to track your bag and its contents at www.knomobags.com.

You can fit a 14/15 inch laptop inside a quilted, removable document pouch. The bag also comes with a smaller pouch for cables and peripherals … and of course it has inner pockets for PDAs, mobile phones and/or iPods. You can purchase one directly on the site, prices range from £ 150,- to £ 235,-.

Acme Made iPod Cases

More present tips:

More iPod accessories, yay. Acme Made makes really nice, lightweight laptop bags that aren't the usual black and boring, and they've just announced new iPod cases in custom-dyed luxe textiles.

The iPod wallet, available for the Mini and the standard sized iPod, is made of Italian leather with a cashmere and microsuede lining. Both ends are open so you don't have to unplug any cords when you store your iPod. There's a strap for your headphones. Available in pink, blue, or lime. $49 for the Mini size, and $59.99 for the standard size.

The
iPod Traveler provides more heavy-duty protection. There's a zipper flap that protects the iPod from scratches when opening and closing the case. The traveler is available in red or black, same prices as the iPod wallet.

SN delivered my luggage..

Img_4016

When we arrived yesterday morning, we heard the following news:
you luggage is still in Tel Aviv.
69 people didn't have their luggage.
Can you imagine one woman of the airport taking care of 69 people at 5 in the morning?
Don't...

So, I truly didn't care, at 5 in the morning. They could send me my stuff as long as I could give my address and drive home and sleep. -Things of course didn't happen that way, I could go straight away to work, when leaving the airport at 6.45-
But what worried me most was the fact that some expensive framed pictures were in the over-sized luggage. And how they would arrive in my place.

When today they delivered the frames, my fears became reality.
My picture is ruined. The frame is broken en scratched allover. More over, the picture is damaged very badly.
So in fact, I can just throw the whole thing...

(Writing a letter to SN Airlines now. A friendly woman on the customer service said they will take care of it.
I hope they do, since I spent so much time and money in making this piece...)

Less violence in Palestinian Areas after death Arafat

After the death of Arafat, terroristic actions and violence dropped with more than 70 percent, according to Israeli authorities.

One can speak of stabilization.
But it is too early to speak of a change in situation.
Israel is avoiding to have violence to give the new Palestinian leaders a chance.

Shooting in Falluja video

Since the shooting in the Mosque, I've been haunted that I have not been able to tell you directly what I saw or explain the process by which the world came to see it as well. As you know, I'm not some war zone tourist with a camera who doesn't understand that ugly things happen in combat. I've spent most of the last five years covering global conflict. But I have never in my career been a 'gotcha' reporter -- hoping for people to commit wrongdoings so I can catch them at it.

The story of the reporter

Blog Torrent: ideal for videoblogging

Mark Frauenfelder: Dave sez: Downhill Battle has released Blog Torrent to the masses! Blog Torrent is software that makes it much easier to share and download files using the bittorrent protocol on your PHP-enabled web site.

Why does Blog Torrent matter?
Making it easy to blog large video files means that people can share their home movies the same way they share their photos or writings. It lets people create vast networks of truly peer-to-peer video content-- video that was made by individuals and shared with individuals, no bandwidth budget or distribution deal needed. Does this mean that we can do for television what blogs have done for news? Let's find out...

Why use Blog Torrent on your blog or website?
1. It lets you post video or other large files as easily as you post text.
2. Installing Blog Torrent is as easy as uploading a photo to your website or blog.
3. Blog Torrent is the one bittorrent tracker that won't confuse your users.
4. It publishes an RSS feed of all your torrents.

Invoicing for Small Business

Finding an invoicing module for a small business for Mac Os X isn't that easy.
Prices start from 500 euro onwards, or you end up with kind of adapted systems that don't seem to work.
Or Filemaker Pro solutions -which make you buy an expensive FileMaker Pro-
I guess today I found the solution: MacBusiness.
Let's you keep track of your clients, meanwhile handles as a task manager, but has a perfect invoicing module that is way more advanced than iWork.
And it doesn't have multiple windows running in chaos.
The invoicemanager warns you when invoices aren't paid yet, or when you are overdoing the budget. -working with a timer-
Okok, some tags are not working perfect. But for 25 dollar, you don't hear me complain...

The problem of CopyRight and how to keep it...

The RIAA, MPAA, BSA, and other organizations are pushing curriculums into schools that distort copyright law, neglect fair use and the First Amendment, and mislead our kids about their legal rights and responsibilities. It's time to create some accurate and informative information sources for teachers who want to address these crucial issues. The topics below are starting points for developing a fair and accurate curriculum that teachers can use in classrooms. We hope you'll help us write and organize.

Sharon and Abbas 'ready to meet'

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas say they are willing to hold talks.

Some days ago the Belgian Consul in Jerusalem held a speech for King's Day. I don't remember the words by heart, but he said: 'when something changes, a new vacuum is created and it needs to be filled.'
Filling this vacuum in a right way is the hard task for the Palestinians today.
Avoiding violence, but yet, not give up their 'battle'
It seems that the vacuum indeed created hope.

Free music via French blog

Chryde says,

I founded a collective french
music weblog with a mp3blog page. We made a compilation of musics we discovered on the web, by ourselves or via other mp3blogs. It's called Point D'ecoute (French for Listening post, a reference to a Mark Hansen Installation: Link

. All the tracks are taken from the bands' sites so it's 100% legal, like a mini Wired CD. 23 tracks, a lot from the US, but also Netherlands, France, Belgium, Austria, Sweden... You can download it here:
Link We made it free to download, with a cover and all. At an event in Paris celebrating musical webzines, we burned it on demand: Link
