Interviewed, on photography

I was interviewed by my little niece (well, little.. she is a teenager these days) for school.

I want to take out some of the questions, and answer them here.

Why did you become a photographer, since everyone knows it is a hard job with little money.
My parents always said I had to do something I wanted to study. A job would come later, and I would probably never do what I studied.
I wanted to understand the language of images, so I decided to study photography, which would learn me how to write with light.
Every job is hard to get, but you need to be the best. You have to want things and try to achieve them.

Is photography what you expected it to be?
Nope.I really wanted to work for the press, until I tried. I hated it.
I like working for me, but not for the other. So I decided to earn my money with other stuff, and do only the fun projects in photography.
Until now, that works :)

Digital of analog?
Analog. Read my philosophy here.

Which characteristics a photographer needs?
Guts, character, politeness, clear mind and ethics.
Guts: to get into a fugitives camp, or get into Yasser's compound and end up with a picture of him, you need some guts, a lot of character and politeness, and a clear mind to actually take a sharp picture.
Ethics: once you have such a picture, you can do whatever you want with it.
A picture doesn't speak. You let it speak through the subtitles. And as a photographer you need ethics to tell the reality behind those images.
I know photographers who actually faked images that made it into the news.
An example:
These 2 pictures give a total different impression of a meeting.

2006 01 17 161201 Usa Washi

You as a photographer, often have that choice. (this is an extreme example, with a lot of photographers, but there are certainly other moments)
Ethics are very important.

Can anybody become a photographer?
Yes certainly.
Anybody who wants to be and is ready to learn, will.
Anybody who wants anything and is ready to do a lot for it will become what he/she has in mind.
Hard work often brings you further than talent only.
