Millim
And there is Miall O'Leary of Millim again.
Sometimes it takes them months to have a new project, but when it arrives in my mailbox, it surprises me each time. In quality and beauty.
'The Diminishing Present' A New Publication By Edgar Martins
“The imagery of 'The Diminishing Present' is less a set of pictures than a series of moments in which spaces, mechanisms, signs, objects and events in the instrumentalist, modified landscape of the contemporary order have become independent of causation or function. It resembles a set of location shots for unmade films from lost scenarios. It constitutes a landscape without human figures, seen as though composed in the eye of the security camera - a seeing without a subject - of a landscape already arranged for surveillance. It evokes the coda completing Antonioni's L'Eclisse, with its new residential zones filled by autonomous machines and alien structures, or Doug Aitken's post-human video landscapes. But it is something more.
This landscape is actual, familiar, always there, and yet imaginary, unseen. It is the other place, which is always this place, in these things; it is there when our backs are turned, while we sleep, or as we drive past in the unconsciousness of speed, in the half-life of routine - it is the landscape that survives our absence.”
Photography as art, poetry and philosophy. Beautiful.

Rock our world
Back in 2003 I initiated Snowblog in Israel, together with some amazing people over there. The project was funded by the Belgian consulate in Jerusalem.
Now 3 years later, the project is still alive (without me though. Living in Belgium these days.)
I was in contact with many other projects throughout the world, but there was one that got my attention: Rock our world. which was introduced to me by Lucas VandePeer, another macaddict.
Through this project, we hope to teach the students around the world the importance of communication and collaboration. In a world that is so turned up-side down, it is our children who are teaching us the importance of friendship.
I introduced one project to the other and now the kids of Snowblog are anticipating for 'Rock our world 4'
Kids around the world are opening their lunch boxes and sharing what they typically eat for their school lunch! This round includes students from: Australia, New Zealand (South Island), New Zealand (North Island), Peru, Belgium, Italy, Germany, France, Japan, China, Israel, and the USA (California, Colorado, North Carolina and Pennsylvania).
The project is going live soon: all these kids will share their lunch boxes live online through internetcamera's to each other and talk about it.
A simple initiative but I am sure it is very effective in learning to appreciate other cultures.
To the Snowblogteam: congrats!
(Oh, on the site it says the video's are posted to Oprah. Gal is this true? Are the kids gonna be on Oprah?? :) )

Sneak Preview
We have been busy lately (and we still are, apparently June is gonna be as hectic as May...)
The redo of the Kask.be and Kaskweek.be site is on the hands of Harold, the practical side is on both of us. KaskLab we're called...
Here's a sneak preview of the site, which should launch soon.
In 2 weeks, exhibitions start. The academy is buzzing, and so do we.

Oostende
Today I had my first visit to the sea of this year (hmmm 1h45 min visit, not quite the longest I did...)
We went to Oostende.
There are strange people over there...
Really: I saw a rastadog, a strange cop doing weird stuff, another strange cop doing even weirder stuff, and a bunch of people I would never have expected over there.
And I forgot my camera... Damn.
But hey, in case you didn't noticed: Spring is back.

CSS background and float
I have been stupidly watching some stuff over here and didn't get it fixed, until I figured it out.
It is such a stupid thing so maybe other experience the same problem.
Thus here's the solution:
I have a problem with Firefox display of background or background-color tag if using float.
I want to set a background color to the #container in which there are two columns. To make them side by side i have used float left and float right tag in each of them. If I set a background color to the whole container looks just fine in IE, but FF display blank background. Help!
Your problem is that by spec, contained DIV's are taken out of the flow of the document. Because of this, your container div is considered empty by compliant browsers - of which IE is not.
Place the following code at the bottom of your stylesheet:
.clearfix:after {
content: ".";
display: block;
height: 0;
clear: both;
visibility: hidden;
}
/* Hides from IE-mac \*/
* html .clearfix {height: 1%;}
/* End hide from IE-mac */
and then change your html to:
< div id="container" class="clearfix" >
Et voila!

Numb3rs
NUMB3RS is a drama about an FBI agent who recruits his mathematical-genius brother to help the Bureau solve a wide range of challenging crimes in Los Angeles. The two brothers take on the most confounding criminal cases from a very distinctive perspective. Inspired by actual cases, the series depicts how the confluence of police work and mathematics provides unexpected revelations and answers to the most perplexing criminal questions. A dedicated FBI agent, Don Eppes (Rob Morrow), couldn't be more different from his younger brother, Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz), a brilliant mathematician who, since he was little, yearned to impress his big brother. As a seasoned investigator, Don deals in hard facts and evidence, whereas Charlie, a math professor at a California university, functions in a world of mathematical probability and equations. Now, despite their disparate approaches to life, Don and Charlie are able to combine their areas of expertise and solve some killer cases.

First real sun, first real heat-wave, and a good response to it: Friday my housemate and I threw a party. It was fun. Last night I went for a drink and discovered my old neighborhood turned into a Cuban street with loads of cocktails, salsa music and people having fun.

KASKweek released
Ok I am low on posting. Thought May was hectic, didn't consider June...
(From the moment I announced I was going fully independent, things became rather busy, I have to say.)
But first things first: June was reserved for school.
Finally we're there: KASKweek is being released.
Check it out: KASKweek.be
And although the site wasn't released until today, we already had some reactions to it: pMachine wants to feature it (Yep we use ExpressionEngine as the CMS behind the system)
This is a nice knock on the shoulder of our splendid webdesigner Harold, and he deserves it.
So congrats, Harold! :)
Hope to see you all on the opening of the exhibitions!

Mediatemple launches adnetwork
And another ad network: ads are hot on the web...
I have a MediaTemple hosting.
Though I prefer my DreamHost account for various reasons: one click installs, unlimited email addresses, mysql and dns-serving. And a discount of 20$ if you use the promocode matuvu. ;)
My MediaTemple account is very useful for MovableType installs, which turned out little bit more complicated on Dreamhost.
There adserving system can be found here.
Probably only interesting fro english writing bloggers. But it appears to be about design. Which is always better than google ads about 'blogging' ;)

Hehe, they do check ups ;)
I am interested in Vista, because Mac Intel is dual boot-able :)))
And this information makes me very curious...
It certainly looks alike.
(I certainly want to hear about their protection against viruses. Has it become better??)
So if I find the time, I'll end up there.
Anyone else really interested? Give a yawp, I might get an extra invite ;)

HLN and photoshopped images in the press
PDW noticed the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws adapted a picture using photoshop.
This is so NOT done...
The reaction from HLN is beneath all reason.
'Due to a technical mistake the clone stamp was used and a part of the picture was copied'
Excuse me?? What? The editors hand happened to go to photoshop, click on the brush, and copy paste certain spots by accident? C'mon...
Using photoshop and afterwards apologizing is one thing (like done by National geographic and Time Magazine in the past)
But denying this manipulation is beyond all ethics.
Make a mistake and recognize, learn for the future...
This should be an important precedent in Belgium where the media itself questions what went wrong.
It should be all over the news.
Because if this is allowed without any protest, what else will be?
My paper back in 2004 had a whole chapter on this item.
Maybe interesting to see and read which precedents in the past triggered a whole discussion amongst photojournalists and editors.
Read it here:Download plato's cave.pdf (4.3mb)

Discoveries of today
My favorite paper shop didn't sell the 'Moleskine Cityguides' yet...
Instead I arrived home with 2 Plain Reporter Books...
in which I reported my 'found today's':
-Tasty in Hoogpoort: reminds me of the taste of Syria and Tel Aviv, by selling fruity juices. I like the banana-apple-orange mix (which isn't on their list...)
-Cream sells David and Goliath tees, but finding my way in their collection is much easier online..
-And Fnac is holding some kind of Gay highlight, presenting DVD's, books, comics etc.
I loved 'The devil's playground' of Nan Goldin. But I didn't buy it.
Already lost my heart on the comics by then:
Leo, the man of Aldebaran and Betelgeuze, apparently has another series: Kenia. Had to have... Luckily De Poort had them.
That's it? Yep, the money's gone...

Architecture I like
Told her I like forties, fifties and sixties modern architecture.
What I mean:
Frank Lloyd Wright
Le Corbusier
Alvar Aalto
Mies Van Der Rohe
Eero Saarinen
Mainly the International Style... an evolution from Bauhaus
(I happened to live 2 years in the Walhalla/White City of Bauhaus)
The main features of modern architecture:The most commonly used materials are glass for the facade, steel for exterior support, and concrete for the floors and interior supports; floor plans were functional and logical.

Lesbianism and the bible
Grinnin':
Most people assume the Biblical prohibition against male homosexuality also includes sex between women – lesbianism or female bisexuality. However, this is a questionable conclusion, since the Bible makes little or no mention of women with regard to this subject, and because the Bible, for better or worse, often holds men and women to different standards regarding sex and sexual roles. Therefore, we believe that lesbianism cannot be seen in the same light as male homosexuality through the Scriptures.
The one passage that is frequently cited as condemning female homosexuality is found in Romans 1:26-27: "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions: for their women exchanged the natural use for that which is against nature. And in the same way also the men abandoned the natural use of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts…” The idea of women going “against nature” is typically interpreted to mean women lusting after women. However, we believe that what Paul is referring to when he speaks of women “going against nature” is not female homosexuality per se, but rather the reversal of sexual roles that goes against the natural order established by God.
Of course, this does have relevance to the issue of female homosexuality, as many lesbians do assume masculine roles and attitudes, adopt male clothing and mannerisms, and play the part of a male in their relationships with women. Women who fall into this category (“butch” lesbians, or “bulldykes”) are indeed going against nature with regards to their sexuality. At the same time, however, there are many women who engage in lesbian or bisexual activity who nevertheless maintain a traditional feminine role and demeanor (i.e., “lipstick” lesbians). Since there is no specific prohibition against lesbian sex, as long as these women remain within the boundaries of the female role prescribed by Scripture, and submit to the authority of the men in their lives, we assume it is permissible. Of course, if their husband or father objected, that would be another story.
They must be jokin'

For one you pay per minute, for the other all is included.
Since I am furious about this I am now checking Proximus. Thanks very much...

Living tomorrow
While going to class yesterday I passed by the Living Tomorrow house in Vilvoorde.
Apparently they are building a new one that opens pretty soon.
I really am curious to see some of these innovations inside.
A pity the site really sucks and doesn't show any pictures of the house...
And above all: doesn't give any information on the status, or possibility to visit.

Belgian design...
Serpentine: plug and spray garden shower
We are happy to present our brand new Serpentine garden shower. This product designed by Tom De Vrieze is a valuable addition to the extremis range.
Place the Serpentine wherever you want. Plug your regular garden hose to the end of the stainless steel tube and your shower is ready for use.
Serpentine is a garden shower with an attractive and practical design. The added value comes from the light construction which provides very easy mobility in the garden.
A major advantage is the plug and spray feature. No longer any problems with pressure pumps or permanent constructions, just plug in the hose, open the tap and have a shower. Because the hose is exposed to the sun, the water inside the hose and the Serpentine heats up and has a nice temperature.
The design is from Tom De Vrieze, who won some prizes with it.
For 360 euro it would fit on my dream house with huge roof terrace ;)
A pity we haven't so much sun over here...

Books I liked reading
-"Sputnik Sweetheart (Vintage International)" (Haruki Murakami) 'Lost in space or lost in love?', fiction
-"The Memory Game" (Nicci French), and all the others, literal thrillers
-"The Kindness of Strangers : The Autobiography" (Kate Adie), a BBC journalist who starts her life time story, moving.
-Peter Verhelst, poetry, a Belgian writer who plays with language
-Bart Moeyaert, anything, Belgian writer who is able to change words into music
-"Digital Fortress : A Thriller" (Dan Brown), and all of his books, I know I know, they're not all good ones, but they happen to lie around here and read like trains.
-"Harry Potter Hardcover Boxed Set (Books 1-6)" (J. K. Rowling), wonderful, still have to read the last one though.
-"Shutterbabe : Adventures in Love and War" (Deborah Copaken Kogan) a photographer who tells about her life. Very accurate.
-"Terrorist Hunter : The Extraordinary Story of a Woman Who Went Undercover to Infiltrate the Radical Islamic Groups Operating in America" (Anonymous), also real story, revealing...
-Herman De Coninck, all his poems, still have to buy his 'Verzameld Werk'. (Dutch)
-Lydia Rood, the erotical as well as the 'detectives' written by Rood & Rood. Entertaining, light, and a fast read
-"The PowerBook" (Jeanette Winterson) and one on mathematics, fiction that drives you to your limits
-"Perfume : The Story of a Murderer (Vintage International)" (Patrick Suskind)
- Donna Tart, not her last one, which sucks.
-"Life of Pi" (Yann Martel) great at the end.
-"City of the Beasts (rack)" (Isabel Allende)
:)

Antwerp
I wanted to go to Antwerp, to a little design fair near Winkelhaak.
Winkelhaak is a beautiful building housing young designers in a nice concept: by paying their monthly rent, all costs are covered and they get a beautiful infrastructure included.
It was built in the former prostitute neighborhood and by building it, the area got a new input. (Quite some effort was done in this neighborhood: they also built the Permeke Library.)
The fair wasn't such a big deal, though I am sure some amongst you would have found something stuff they'd want...
We managed to sneak in the guided tour of the Winkelhaak.
As all of you know by now, I love nice architecture, and hearing the motivation behind some of these concepts is just interesting.
The weather was beautiful, and we decided to pretend as if it was vacation. So we headed for the beach after the tour.
Strantwerpen enlarged their beaches and now they have one near the Vlaamse/Waalse Kaai.
It felt like Tel Aviv. It really did.
I found out Antwerpen can feel like vacation, and really, I can imagine spending a weekend discovering the city.
Today I'll have vacation in Gent again...
PS: Tip: never ask a guy from De Lijn how to get to the beach...
Just ask people in the street. And remember Antwerpen has a metro, which in some cases is faster than the tram.

Design in Antwerp
Remember my complaint about the lack of well designed apartments in Ghent.
Antwerp has many of what I long for.
And I figured out my main concern is: large windows, and a terrace.
If they can build this in Antwerp, why not in Ghent??
(OK, they don't seem to be the cheapest apartments, I know, but pic number 1,2 and 3 show you the limitations and how they still integrated good design to make it more compelling.)

Books
I forgot how much I like books.
Found myself the latest Dan Brown, lying around at my moms place.
Well, started yesterday and finished today. (Yep, I happen to be a fast reader, a speed reader one could say. -No I didn't do any courses for that, just read a lot-)
I long for more words...
Tell me, what's your list of recommended books?

Belgacom Frustration
Telephone conversation:
(Computervoice) Press 1 for invoice, press for activating a service, press 3 for technical questions
(Music for 3 minutes)
(Ringtone)
(A guy that answers)
Me: Hi I need my login and password for xxx.xxx, my casenumber is xxxxxx. You promised me last week to send this, but we didn't receive anything.
He: well let's check. You don't need a login and password for mysql.
Me: Oh sure I do, a host, login and password. and somewhere to connect to that database if possible.
He: ok, so surf to test.xxx.xxx
Me: I get an error?
He: that's not possible. oh, I get an error too... Apparently someone forgot to make you the test server.
Me: Nice, I received a login and pass for the ftp, another login and pass for the test ftp, but I cannot check it? (grumbl, this is going on like this for the last 2 weeks)
He: can you hold on a minute?
Me: sure
(Me, waiting, strange tone appearing, broken connection)
(I try again at their free number.)
(Computervoice) Press 1 for invoice, press for activating a service, press 3 for technical questions
(Music for 3 minutes)
(Ringtone)
(Another guy that answers)
Me: My call was broken, I am Ine, working for xxx.xxx and I am looking for the login and pass of this. There was a guy helping me out.
He: What do you want?
Me: login for MySql.
He: What?
Me: MySql.
He: sorry, let's check. Do you have a moment?
Me: sure
He: Can you repeat your question again?
Me: I need a login for MySql database.
He: hmmmm, do you have a clientnumber?
Me: yep, xxxxxx
He: ok all is up and running.
Me: no it isn't I was talking to a guy and he explained me test.xxx.xxx wasn't made.
He: apparently it is now.
Me: so can I have my login and pass for MySql?
He: I cannot explain this, you have to mail to xxx@xxx
Me: But on my email, they say I have to call this number for technical assistance.
He: But not for that.
Me: But there was a guy helping me out saying all of this on this number.
He: But I can't
Me: So give me the guy
He: I don't know who it is.
Me: sS you tell me, I call a technical number, for technical assistance and I get a guy who knows less about it than me, who has to help me out?
He: For this you have to mail xxx@xxx, we cannot know everything.
Me: So why do you add THIS number 'for technical assistance' to the mail?
He: Sorry I cannot help you.
Ok,
I have a client who's hosting is located at Skynet/Belgacom.
Great.
If it were up to me I'd change it, except for the fact that they have like 60 emailadresses and changing them one by one is a much of a hassle as just leaving the hosting over there.
I thought...
I mean: How hard is it to give me a unix hosting and a mysql password?
How difficult is it to understand that sometimes companies work with external freelance webdesigners?
And why oh why do you get a guy that clearly knows nothing on the matter and checks a database with questions to read you an answer...
This ain't a business service at all. (We don't have a consumer package, no the company I am working for has a rather large bill at Belgacom...)
Suckers.
Really.
I am delayed by 2 weeks because they don't do what they have to do and each time I call something new isn't done.
Update: they finally gave me the info.
Jihaaaaaaa.
Update 2: it isn't working...

Belgacom the sequel...
"Geachte heer, mevrouw,
Gebruikersnaam: ******
Paswoord: ******
Naam van de databank: nieks schrijven"
Huh? Nieks schrijven?
As far as I know a database has:
-a login
-a password
-a server where it is hosted.
and
-a name.
Or is this my mistake?
Same answer:
'Onze technische dienst voorziet jammer genoeg geen ondersteuning in verband met de creatie van uw databank.'
Cool, back to the beginning...
I have a hosting at Dreamhost, which does ALL this stuff automatically, gives me the right answers in a minute, and helps me out with a wiki and a support. The wiki answers my questions in 90% of the cases, IF I have any questions...
That hosting costs me almost nothing!
And how come, a hosting at Belgacom costs double, gives me each time WRONG answers and doesn't solve my stuff even when I am PAYING for it?
PS: Yes I figured it out by now. By myself.
The only thing one of these support guys had to do is tell me.
But none of them did.
And yes I am sure some of them do know, and are willing to tell. But that means you have found a pearl amongst empty shields.
If you find yourself that pearl at Belgacom, ask his/her name, and never forget it...

Nike + iPod
I am not much of a runner, but I know some who are really into their training schedule.
And who also love their iPod...
Today I checked the Apple+iPod thingy (because I am a geek, that's why ;P).
It is fabulous.
It would almost want me to love running. (Almost that is, don't presume I'll start running now. I have a beautiful motorcycle and I love it, and I have a bike and I love it too.)
The thing that intrigues me, is not the shoe, nor the ipod, nor the technique. But the program analysing it afterwards...
It is soooo f* beautifully designed... showing your progress (well in my case, i am not sure if there would be such a thing as progress...)
Manmanman...
I think I know someone who'd love to get this for a birthday or so...

The new mouse? Tactapad
Well, let's see the new mouse..
Tactapad uses some new techniques and looks very promising...:
Many tasks are most naturally done with both hands working together. Why should working on a computer be any different? Rotate a shape with two touches in a drawing application. Or move two pictures at once to get your page layout just right
Check the demo's to see what's possible.
Unfortunately, this design is not yet in production, and the estimated price of 1000 euro isn't what I'd call cheap.

Why video podcasting will have a bright future
Yesterday while driving back and forth to Microsoft, we were talking about podcasting and its future. How it will stay 'niche' as it is now.
Me on my side, I am not so sure if it will stay 'niche'.
It is true, I am still not really convinced about watching movies on an ipod (but maybe I should get one before saying so)
Yet podcasting doesn't need an ipod or any other player.
You have enough with your computer.
Some days ago I was impressed: my downloaded podcasts on iTunes also appeared on my FrontRow MediaCenter.
And there they were: full screen on a 23 inch screen. Videopodcasts...
Now tell me: if you can watch a cast on a tiny little screen or on a blast of a television, what would you prefer as user experience?
I have my idea made up.
I also see some possible implementations.
Peter: what about videopodcasts teaching how to dance tango?
Or cooking classes? Or a tour in the Moma?
Pretty sure, they'll offer paying podcasts one day.
Is the Frontrow experience far away?
Don't think so.
Yesterday Microsoft presented us their new Vista.
Their MediaCenter, connected to a nice huge flatscreen...
Works too I guess.
(I forgot to ask how they implement the music, and podcasts, and what they do when users prefer iTunes: does the media also appears in MediaCenter? Kris? Tom?
I'll have to check it out: they gave us some DVD's with the beta products. -Have to figure out how to install it on my Intel Mac though-)

Garden
Tonight Canvas showed Garden:
In a run-down neighborhood of Tel Aviv known as "the Garden," gay hustlers and drug dealers ply their trade. Here, documentary filmmakers Adi Barash and Ruthie Shatz spent a year following Nino, a 17-year-old illegal Palestinian, and his 18-year-old friend Dudo, an Israeli Arab. Despite their grim circumstances, Nino and Dudo survive on mutual friendship and dream of a future elsewhere. While showing a segment of Israeli life seldom seen on film, Garden also presents a frank consideration about the urge to find one's place in the world.
The whole street thing is being filmed in my former neighborhood.
The amazing part is when they show the election results.
That night I was standing on the other side of town, looking to the tall building where they showed the results.
I miss Tel Aviv.

Plug and play office
Design company Bosch & Fjord, a collaboration between the visual artists Rosan Bosch and Rune Fjord Jensen have created a furniture system, for Innovation Lab’s new space at the Copenhagen’s IT University, on the premise of ‘innovation’, that is the ‘plug and play’ answer to furniture design. It enables an organization to refurnish, move to another site or grow and shrink without difficulty.
Premised on the condition of moving, the system considers possibilities for rearranging rooms and combining elements and is intended for an innovative organizational structure in constant change. It consists of big shipping crates that work as modules with different things on the inside, e.g. a workstation, part of a conference room or a kitchen. The crates are designed to fit into any standard building. When the crates are brought into the building from the truck, they are placed in a room and opened. Each function has its own crate with its own explicit identity and design.
The crates include three different kinds of workstations, enabling individual Lab Agents to choose their own place according to character, need or mood. There is a small, intimate meeting room with a green lounge sofa and a video-conference room built as a light green ‘blue-screen film studio’, enabling choices between backgrounds for video conferences. There is also a pink kitchen box, as well as a big biomorphic worktable with a palm tree in the centre. The crates can be combined into rooms with closed doors or left open.
