What is this war about?
Everybody is condemning Israel, and certainly after what happened in Qana, Israel should ask itself what it is doing.
Read Robert Fisk's words on the attack.
... the odd thing is the idea that for the Israeli military that somehow it’s okay to kill all these children; if a missile is launched 30, 90 feet from their house, that's okay then. We’ve got some film to show the missiles were launched; that's okay then. I mean, did the aircraft which dropped this bomb, a guided weapon, by the way -- they knew what they were hitting. It’s a guided weapon. We know that because the computer codes have been found on the bomb fragments. Did they say, “Oh, well, then, the man who launched the missile is hiding with the children in the basement of the house we're going to hit”? Is it the case now that if you happen to live in a house next to where someone launches a missile, you are to be sentenced to death? Is that what Israel thinks the war is about?
I’m sitting here, for example, in my house tonight in darkness -- there’s no electricity -- next to a car park. What if someone launches a missile from the car park? Am I supposed to die for that? Is that a death sentence for me? Is that how Israel wages war? If I have children in the basement, are they to die for that? And then I’m told it’s my fault or it’s Hezbollah's fault? You know, these are serious moral questions.
The real question is 'why'. Why is all this happening.
Is this only about 2 soldiers being kept, probably already dead.
Or is there something else going on?

MacBookPro
I finally received my MacBookPro and in fact I am pretty pissed.
It took 6! months to get the damn thing, on top of that it is NOT querty which means a big adaptation to me, since I am so used to querty (and it is so much more logic to do coding. Who the hell invented azerty and why do Belgians need it??)
Next to that, when it was ordered, back in Feb. the MacBookPro was still 1.83 Ghz. You'd think they'd do a free upgrade to the model as announced after the release of the MacBook, and for sure after getting such a large order from my school (Atleast 20 macs arrived today...) But no, ITPro apparently took it as an advantage to get rid of the old models...
So I got a 1.83 Ghz model.
Whining included.
I tell you. I could cope with all the rest: the 15inch, which is HUGE, the azerty keyboard, even the 1.83 Ghz.
But the whining???
That's why I am pissed and won't stop whining about it myself...
It is like getting an old p4 making an awful lot of noise...
Luckily Apple recognizes the whining problem...
So let's cross fingers Apple releases their iPhone this month, so I can go and get one and forget about this whining MBP...
Question to Mac Intel Owners: Adium keeps on crashing. What do you use instead to run your MSN chats?

Dogstroller
Now this clearly something coming out of the States: the pet stroller.
I always wondered what to do when you have a lazy dog that doesn't feel like talking his daily walk.
The stroller certainly gives the answer.
Instead of your child, you put the dog into the stroller (and you put your child on the leash, lol)
Stuff for your pet is clearly becoming a new market: Ikea already has several things in their shop, and I guess when these things start to pop up at Ikea, it is a sign something has become mainstream...
Wanna check it out? Pet Strollers

For moviemakers..
Dear friends,
The next session of the Résidence du Festival de Cannes will be held from 28th February till 15th July 2007.
The deadline for sending applications is 19th September 2006.
The Résidence du Festival is a wonderful opportunity for young directors to develop their first or second fictional feature film project.
It makes available to them :
- a place of residence in the heart of Paris,
- a personalised programme accompanying the writing of their scripts,
- and a collective programme of forums with film industry professionals.
The residents equally benefit from:
a 800-euro grant per month;
free access to a large number Paris cinemas;
French lessons (optional);
the possibility of attending festivals during their stay.
Registration on line : www.cinefondation.com
The selection of the residents by a jury, presided by a director or a motion-picture celebrity, is based on the quality of their already made shorts - or first feature film, as well as on the interest of the feature film project in the course of being written, and on the candidates' motivation.

MacBookPro, the sequel.
One day later:
All the installing and transferring of files never went sooooo smooth.
Even the general email problem I have (some how the current inboxes never seem to transfer) was solved easily and for sure, not forgotten like last times.
It is soooo fast :)
The light in the night is cool.
Come to think about it: since I just spent a whole lot of my savings, travelling will be down. So taking the computer along isn't such a fuss anymore.
On top of tat, making designs on a 12inch was a pain in the ass, there is just no space on the screen.
More over, in my new apartment, the 23inch will be standing in the living room, so if I watch tv late at night, in my own room, the MacBook 15 makes sure I don't need another screen.
(You can bet I'll make a shelf on perfect hight for that)
The whining is VERY annoying.
I do have Windows XP running on it. BUT, one needs ctrl, alt delete to access. Let there be no delete button on a MacBookPro... Damn.
We tried to put of that feature, but apparently 'disable' at pC doesn't mean 'disabled' in reality. So I have to add a keyboard each time to enter the delete thing.
Kris of Microsoft, isn't there another way, and don't tell me the change-a-key-function thing.
(Not adding a delete button on a keyboard is stupid, I know, but actually, I never used it on pc...)
Update: I went to ITPro and they said that normally they'll change the innerside of the computer... I have to give it in.
And n00.be is right: they changed; they are much more friendly nowadays... Must be the change of scene over there...

9/11 Live: The NORAD Tapes
![]()
How did the U.S. Air Force respond on 9/11? Could it have shot down United 93, as conspiracy theorists claim? Obtaining 30 hours of never-before-released tapes from the control room of NORAD's Northeast headquarters, the author reconstructs the chaotic military history of that day and the Pentagon's apparent attempt to cover it up.

DreamHost Blog » Anatomy of a(n ongoing) Disaster..
DreamHost Blog; Anatomy of a(n ongoing) Disaster..: As I'm sure most of you already know, we've had nothing but troubles, large troubles, for pretty much the last three weeks. A lot of these troubles were our fault, a couple of them were at least ostensibly beyond our control, and they all compounded each other.
Here I'll try and go into as much detail as possible about what happened, why, and the steps we're taking to stop this sort of thing from ever happening again. I can't excuse what happened, just apologize and hopefully elucidate.
I have a DreamHost account, it was hot damn cheap compared to my other hosts.
I have a MediaTemple account too, and admitted, I once cancelled my account because their PHP used to be an older version than I needed. They paid back instantly. That was the reason, 6 months later, I took them again.
Since then, I stayed. Their uptime is great.
I took 2 accounts to be able to switch easily if needed.
The cheap prices in the States are a relief, compared to some European.
What happened now at DreamHost would make me cancel an account, but because of their communication they get my support: accidents happen.
I hope they do more than sending nice newsletters and apologizing, now they'll need to rebuild their credibility of uptime.
They deserve a 5 star for communication.

Basic Knives
Anything but simple, the Basic Knives collection is a design by Caroline Noordijk that brings tons of functionality and increased productivity into the kitchen. Utilizing the flat, empty surface of the blade, Caroline incorporates other kitchen tools into the knife. This eliminates having to switch tools and saves time. Having a peeler, grater, zester, or a measuring spoon in my hand at the same time as the knife would do wonders for speeding up my dinner prep time.
Nice...since my roommates like to cook... ;)

Help build a bridge around the world
The bridge is big a charity effort that wants to unite people in a creative way to build a better future for others. Everyone can help build a mile of a virtual bridge around the world and for each mile companies like Adobe will give one dollar to a charity that you care about the most. It’s a great initiative and there are already pretty beautyfull creations and words added to the bridge. Currently there are 585 miles built and 24317 to go. So, get creative, let your heart speak and contribute.

6 connections to someone you don't know?
Ok this is crazy...
I hear an podcast on Israel with a webdesigner living in the north of Israel (Don't bother to listen; it is nothing special...)
I google the woman's name, see she's on LinkedIn and get the message:
She is only 4 steps away.
Getting in touch with a woman I don't know at all will take me 4 people...
Amazing...
(I have no clue why she says she's located in the States, since she is certainly in Israel now..)

The most beautiful prefab ever...
One of the most beautiful, flexible, and complex prefab systems we’ve covered in the last year is the Ray Kappe designed Living Home. For better and worse, it was covered this week in the LA Times by writer Christopher Hawthorne in the article “Such a deal?” Although he addressed several shortcomings that bother us about the current prefab industry, we can’t help but feel he cast a harsh light on prefabs in general based upon this high end model.
“…the last thing the fledgling prefab movement needs at this point is aggressive marketing or more hype. What it needs is a reality check.” –Christopher Hawthorne, LA Times
Yes, the Living Home is expensive. Look at it! I can’t believe it’s under $2 million; this is the Cadillac of current prefab designs. Don’t knock it on approachability and affordability, because that’s definitely not the target market which Kappe was designing for.
This “product” offers a beautiful, spacious, and quick move-in design for those with sophisticated modern tastes- and relatively deep pockets. There are many other prefab models in production that do provide a more affordable housing option. Tiny ones like the Weehouse, several designs by Michelle Kaufman, and the sub-$100,000 option by Rocio Romero are all good examples.
Certainly my cup of tea, except for the price tag...

Now get worried...
'Bij een luchtaanval op vrachtwagens met fruit aan de grens met Syrië vallen meer dan twintig doden.'
'In an air attack on trucks with fruit, at the border with Syria, more than 20 deaths are reported.'
Many of you might get furious about the deaths.
I focus on 'border with Syria'...
Get really worried now...
It is probably true that only outside intervention will prevent a substantial escalation in the coming days, but there is no sign that such intervention will come from Washington or London (where Tony Blair's government too lays the blame at the doors of Syria and Iran). This might just have been the occasion for the European Union to use its influence, but there is little sign of leadership from that source; and suggestions from the United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan and from Tony Blair that an international peacekeeping force be sent to southern Lebanon have been firmly rejected by Tel Aviv.
Unless Hizbollah decides that it has achieved sufficient political progress by demonstrating Israel's vulnerability, it is unlikely to hold back. Even if it does, the IDF will not willingly exercise restraint – the memories of its previous defeat in the 1980s are a heavy, embittering weight on the minds of senior Israeli military officers. That is one reason why the current crisis is so dangerous and could well escalate across the region.
(from)
Even Israel is aware of the danger. (Article from Haaretz)
So yalla Verhofstadt... it's Europe's call this time. the US and London are clearly not reacting, and meanwhile the danger enlarges.
Even Olmert wants to be sure an international army comes in, before it stops attacking...

Véronique de Viguerie wins the Canon Female Photojournalist Award 2006
French photographer Véronique de Viguerie has become the sixth woman to win the Canon Female Photojournalist Award for her project on Communist Militiawomen in Nepal.
Véronique de Viguerie is 28 years old. French by birth, she studied photography in England before becoming a freelance photojournalist in 2004. Her work includes reports from Pakistan, and a number of in-depth reports on Afghanistan, a country she first visited for a newspaper assignment in 2003. In 2005 she narrowly escaped death in a suicide bombing on a Kabul café - the man sitting next to her was killed outright. Her work has been published in Newsweek, The New York Times, LIFE, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, Le Monde and Libération.
Check her portfolio. Is is truly GOOD photography. In every sense.
According to me she should win the Photojournalist Award 2006 without the Female title... Long time since I have seen such a portfolio... Respect.

Everything is Victory
The biggest advantage of jihadists is their 'Everything is Victory' element
It tends to assess military developments according to the following criteria:
1. If I kill you, I win.
2. If you kill me, I am a martyr. I win big.
3. There are no innocents in the land of my enemy. If I kill infants, the elderly, pregnant women, even on purpose, I win.
4. When my enemy kills innocent civilians in error, even his own allies condemn him for brutality. I win.
I guess this is the element that outrages the US and Israel, and even us: knowing that in any way we cannot win from that idea.

Blogstorm on altered picture
This weekend several bloggers reported the strange alteration on a picture of a photographer picturing Beirut.Today the news hits big in mainstream media, when Reuters apologized.
LONDON, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Reuters, the global news and information agency, told a freelance Lebanese photographer on Sunday it would not use any more of his pictures after he doctored an image of the aftermath of an Israeli air strike on Beirut.
The photograph by Adnan Hajj, which was published on news Web sites on Saturday, showed thick black smoke rising above buildings in the Lebanese capital after an Israeli air raid in the war with the Shi'ite Islamic group Hizbollah, now in its fourth week.
Reuters withdrew the doctored image on Sunday and replaced it with the unaltered photograph after several news blogs said it had been manipulated using Photoshop software to show more smoke.
Reuters has strict standards of accuracy that bar the manipulation of images in ways that mislead the viewer.
"The photographer has denied deliberately attempting to manipulate the image, saying that he was trying to remove dust marks and that he made mistakes due to the bad lighting conditions he was working under," said Moira Whittle, the head of public relations for Reuters.
"This represents a serious breach of Reuters' standards and we shall not be accepting or using pictures taken by him," Whittle said in a statement issued in London.
So we won't be seeing this one...
(credit: Adnan Hajj, Photoshop, and Jewlicious)
More evidence of photoshopping and misleading captions by the same photographer, here and here and here
It is very good to see people react to manipulated pictures.
In the end one could say the picture of the woman doesn't matter since it could have been another woman screaming.
But it does matter.
I had huge discussions on the matter back in Israel with Western 'so called' journalists, who really did the same.
Awful to know..

Back in 1989, I visited Roumania, only months before Ceaucesco would lose the regime.
Back in 2002, I visited Iraq, only months before Saddam would be taken out of a pit, as a rat.
Back in 2002, I met Arafat, only months before he died.
Back in 2006, I visited Cuba, apparently only months before the shift to a new regime.
Makes me wonder...:

Facettes de la petite morte.
Beautiful Agony is dedicated to the beauty of human orgasm. This may be the most erotic thing you have ever seen, yet the only nudity it contains is from the neck up. That's where people are truly naked.
The videos were made in private by the contributor (and sometimes their partner). We don't know what they're doing, or how they are doing it, we just know it's real and it's sexy as hell. Make your ears blush by putting on your headphones and turning the sound to eleven.
Yes, there are free samples. Look for the ones with the red borders and the text underneath that says 'free sample'.
New agony comes five times per week (at least).
They all have sound.
Overkill is our magazine section where we post interesting snippets, interviews and outtakes. If you find any orgasm-related stuff on the web which might be of interest to our readers please email us.
Some Agonees have told us their dirty secrets, and we will let you watch, so long as you promise not to tell. Look for the word 'confessions'.

For geeks...
Two big, related announcements are coming out tomorrow - MobileCrunch has the scoop. Sony announced its new mylo (my life online) personal communicator, a wifi device that works in any 802.11b wireless network. It allows instant messaging, internet browsing and emailing, as well as listening to music (MP3, ATRAC or WMA) and viewing photos and MPEG-4 videos. This thing is Skype enabled, and Skype is making a separate release on that functionality.
mylo has a 2.4 inch LCD screen (measured diagonally), 1 GB of flash memory and a slide out qwerty keyboard. You can have it in any color you want, as long as it's black or white. Sony claims the battery will allow up to 45 hours of music playback or seven hours of chatting and web surfing.
It also comes pre-packaged with Skype, Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger and includes JiWire's hotspot directory which lists 20,000 or so wifi networks in the U.S.
Look for it in September, cost will be $350.
This could be the wifi device for Skype that we'e all been waiting for.

The War Tapes
THE WAR TAPES is the movie they made with Director Deborah Scranton and a team of award-winning filmmakers. It’s the first war movie filmed by soldiers themselves on the front lines in Iraq. (Read the Director’s Vision Statement.)
THE WAR TAPES follows three men: Sergeant Steve Pink, Sergeant Zack Bazzi, and Specialist Mike Moriarty. Steve is a young carpenter with a dark, irreverent sense of humor who joined the Guard for college money. Zack is an inquisitive, ironic traveler and university student. Mike is a husband and father of two, driven to fight by honor and redemption. You will see Operation Iraqi Freedom through their eyes.
The soldiers were not picked by casting agents or movie producers. They selected themselves. 10 soldiers from Charlie Company carried cameras on IED-riddled roads and into combat—and into their own internal conversations.
They learned how to choose and tell their stories in constant instant message and e-mail conversations with Director Scranton. They filmed under unbelievable conditions. The unit was based at LSA Anaconda in the deadly Sunni Triangle, under constant threat of ambush and IED attacks. They traveled, as a unit, 1.4 million miles during their tour, and lived through over 1,200 combat operations and 250 direct enemy engagements.
Because it’s filmed by citizen soldiers telling their own stories, THE WAR TAPES is funnier, spicier, and more wrenching than stories other people migfht tell about them.

Leonardo Table and Chairs
We all know that beautiful furniture can be sexy in a shiny, sleek and sinuous sort of way, but two young French designers Bertrand Clerc and Olivier Gregoire have made their furniture sexy in a physical and psychological way with their Leonardo table and chairs.
What really makes furniture attractive is not just how it looks, but how we interact with it; the way a table or chair or table is designed can totally dictate our behaviour, posture and attitude. An uncomfortable chair makes us fidgety, while soft sofa relaxes us. It is not often, however, that we leave our feelings behind us when we get up and walk away. Maybe the scattered cushions or rumpled bedclothes hint at what went on, but they are only subtle clues.
Leonardo, which is still at prototype stage, not only clearly evokes a moment of human behaviour through form but also encourages future occupants to do the same. Imagine sitting at this table and not feeling just a little bit flirty. How can you resist? Bertrand Clerc tells us, “Leonardo finds itself between art and function…it is humanized by the fact that the material has received a human imprint. The object fossilizes a moment of intimacy, it submits itself to the imperceptible then the impalpable becomes tangible. And so form doesn't follow function, it follows the feelings. Leonardo is an ode to love.”

The Sony will keep on crashing, he assured me, but Sony Ericsson keeps on repairing it instead of replacing it.
Damned...
So I have a good reason to check out the new phones. (No mam, I didn't intended this when buying that phone..)
I have been bragging about it: I want WLAN inside of it. I mean, this is the future.
And Bluetooth. Never a phone without bluetooth anymore -as I am speaking, the replacement doesn't have it, and I never know who's calling, I didn't bother to put all my numbers inside..-
The choices of phones with WLAN and Bluetooth?
Few...
There is the SonyEricsson p990i , if it ever gets released. And it is HUGE...
Regarding my problems with SE... Well, I am not sure.
And there is Nokia:
The N80, the N93 and the E60, oh, almost forgot the N91, but that one is sooo ugly...
The N80 is sweet and small. Would be perfect for me...
But the N93 is nice too, carrying a cute videocam, to play around with. (It would save me the space of my digital cam I always carry around..)
Anyone experience with any of these devices?
They're good? Is there nice soft for Symbian?
Will I be able to Skype with it? Or are there other solutions?
And I was told I can upload to Flickr immediately. True??

The U.S. administration is troubled...
If I were in the Pentagon I would be worried about Israel's rise of self-confidence...
Out of BBC Q&A:
How will others regard it?
In Lebanon and throughout the Arab and Muslim world any significant expansion of Israeli ground operations in Lebanon will be seen as an illegal occupation and increase demands for an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli troops.
Even moderate Arab governments (some of whom are not enamoured of Hezbollah) will likely accuse Israel of escalating the conflict despite diplomatic moves to end it.
Radicals and jihadis will probably welcome it as a new cause with which to attract recruits.

Telephone conversation with Israel
I am in Tel Aviv. We are on the beach. If it weren' t for television, radio, or newspapers, we wouldn't know a war was going on.
But my friend, she lives in the north.

Iran: Ahmadinejad is Blogging!
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iranian President has started his own blog in four languages. In his first post he talks about his life. On his blog the following question is asked: Do you think that the US and Israeli intention and goal by attacking Lebanon is pulling the trigger for another world war? Visitors are invited to vote yes or no to the question.
Wallah!
It is like the orthodox jews with their ipods. Technology eventually rules over conservative minds.

EyeTv Hybrid
This is nice: DTT and analog TV in one stick.
I already threw it in my shopping cart in the Apple store: the eye TV for DTT.
But when asking people, most of them said the receiving was extremely bad. 150 euro for a gadget that would fail on me was too much, so I was hesitating.
And see, today I discover the eyetv Hybrid, featuring both in one stick.
The advantage: wherever you do not have the DTT signal, you're able to receive the old analog signal anyway. Worth the extra 50 box since Belgium isn't covered that well...
Dumping my former cart and filling a new one.
Telenet TV? Naaah. Een and Canvas are more than enough when one can record his favorite programs.
Probably a 150 euro's but not yet on the Apple Store...

E-gov
Some months ago I requested a token for my taxes (In Belgium we can submit our taxes online)
But the token is also good for other stuff.
Since I am moving I have to declare this.
Normally one spends quite some time waiting and verifying papers.
I remembered that i can do this digitally.
So I did.
And meanwhile I found out I can also fill in the organ donation online, and my last requests: how I want to be buried/burned.
I didn't even know we can request our ashes to be spread over the Belgian sea...
(Would prefer another more exotic sea though...)
Good to know.

Lee West
I am looking for nice lamps. I checked Ikea, and they have nothing.
(Actually my mom called me yesterday saying 'The new Ikea book, well... It is such a disappointment There is NOTHING inside of it. Nothing...' I can assure you, my mom sounded disappointed. And I also can tell you she's got taste -I guess that's where mine was born...-)
So not too much Ikea stuff for this new move.
Maybe the internet has something to offer (Maybe? Hehe, the internet has ALWAYS something)
I liked the lamp on the right (the one on the left is a copy cat of something...)
But if you know profound ideas of light, don't hesitate to send them in!
Lee West is a young English designer who has been working in Paris since 2000. He's quickly made a name for himself "Create(ing) useful objects with maximum material quality" for Ligne Roset, Cinna, Arc international, Paco Rabanne perfumes and Seiko. We like his sensibility for organic forms and mirrored surfaces.
Here are a few of his works (more after the jump):
His Boss table lamp in double cased white and transparent cut glass for Cinna, above right, and his Supernova floor lamp in triplex glass from Cinna, above left

Combell
I am installing a MovableType for a client.
One click install, Maarten would say.
Well... Not when you are at Combell.
I tried to install all necessary stuff on the Combell server:
install perl, install perl module for my sql, install mysql, install php, install install install...
(On all the other servers I installed MT, all of this Perl, mySql, Php and other stuff was already there. I do not understand why Combell doesn't. It is just a pain in the ass... But hey, the client is king and the client decided to take Combell.)
Of course something went wrong, although all the installs were done right, according to the perl check script from MT.
So I try to look for the support : 0800/.... Perfect.
One phone call later:
'If he can solve it'
'Please email'
'Will you be fast?'
'Yes'
That was quite a while ago.
I guess I have a different idea of fast...
Update: as I am writing this, the answer arrived. Just within my limits of fast that is. ;)
Update 2: Hosting trouble the horror. As I was considering to buy a reseller at Combell, I just cancelled that idea... 3 mails and a lot of time further...:
Combell: Wij kunnen geen fout opmerken op systeemniveau hebt u zeker de bestanden correct geupload, sommige moeten in ASCII mode en andere in binary mode. Zoals in de installatie beschreven.
Ine: Na even te googlen krijg ik dit binnen:
"Yes this error is due to the outdated version of DBI.pm on your
server. The latest version should be obtained from CPAN (http://
search. cpan.org) and then installed on your server."
Kunnen jullie die driver updaten aub?
Mvg
Ine
Stijn
Aarrgh... I mean why do you take a hosting company?
Update 3: Apparently complaining helps. -I wonder why it always comes to that part...- After a long mail they fixed everything. Thank you Combell. Really.

Goodbye to a son.
Uri Grossman was killed in the war with Hezbollah.
Uri, the son of David Grossman, one of Israel's most famous (leftist) and beloved authors, had been killed in battle only a few days after his father, together with Amos Oz and A.B. Yehoshua, published in Haaretz newspaper an open letter that called upon the government to negotiate a ceasefire with Hezbollah.
David Grossman's son was not a political symbol. His death was not "one of those moments when icons are brought low." Israelis who didn't know David Grossman personally joined him in mourning his son's death because David Grossman was the voice that expressed our intimate feelings - about family and about death, for example. His stories for children are so well known and beloved - stories like the Itamar series, or Uri's Special Language ( “Uri is almost two years old, and he’s beginning to talk,” it began. “Even Uri’s parents don’t understand what Uri is saying.”), which he wrote when his son was two years old. And because his novels, like Someone to Run With (for teenagers) and See Under: Love are such beautifully written expressions of both universal themes and uniquely Israeli experiences.
Grossman simply knows how to express what we are feeling. So when his son died, we thought about all the people we knew who had been killed or badly wounded over the last month, and we identified with him because we knew so many grieving families and friends of dead soldiers who were going through the same pain.
Read the good bye letter of his father.

AIW-5 In-Wall Speakers
Looking for good quality sound without the ugly speakers? The Amina Tech AIW-5 speakers go inside the wall itself, behind the plaster. They use NXT flat speaker technology to set up vibrations in a composite panel, which are transmitted through the plaster of the wall.
The company claims the sound is good enough to be used as part of a home theater setup, with each speaker generating a decent 80 watts of power.
Nice to have music n a good design. Sorry: in no design.

The uchronians are back...
Remember all the buzz about Arne Quinze going to a desert and making an aprt project over there?
Well it is happening now and you can read all about it on their website: The uchronians are back...
Check the video's to see beautiful stuff.
It is all happening in the Nevada Desert, in Black Rock City, during the annual Burning man festival.
WHAT IS BURNING MAN?
Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind. In this section you will find the peripheral definitions of what the event is as a whole, but to truly understand this event, one must participate. This site serves to try to paint a picture of the Burning Man experience to those who are new to the project, as well as to give those participants looking to keep the fire burning in their daily lives an environment in which to connect to their fellow community members. For a brief yet eloquent overview of the entire event from the time of arrival to the time of exodus, please read "What is Burning Man?", an essay written by participant and one-time web team member, Molly Steenson. Please see archived sections for each year to read more about the art themes, art installations and theme camps for each year.
Here you will find links that will take you on a trip through the past - through the history of Burning Man - from its early days on a small beach in San Francisco through its evolution into the bustling city of some 25,000+ people that the Burning Man event has become today. These people make the journey to the Black Rock Desert for one week out of the year to be part of an experimental community, which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in one's day-to-day life. The result of this experiment is Black Rock City, home to the Burning Man event.
Would love to go there once..

Airports
My cousin is a pilot for SN Airlines.
He says it is hilarious to see/hear what is happening on airports these days.
He advises not to take anything in hand luggage what you don't need. His air hostess had to give in her very expensive lipstick and eyeliner...
Meanwhile it is also known that the amount of thefts has risen. All those unattended laptops in the luggage instead of hand luggage... No wonder.
My advise: put the thing well covered inside of your ordinary luggage. They don't mind your 'be careful' sticker.
I thought flying El Al was painful... Turns out the whole flying experience gets worse and worse.

Looking for eager Second Life players
Got a mail 2 days ago from the Belgian television program 'Koppen'.
They are looking for Second Life players who want to tell something about it.
That's you? Then contact Pascal dot seynaeve at vrt dot be.
I have an alter ego in Second Life, but not yet eager to play.
It eats my CPU, and I don't get what's the fun of virtual dancing in a virtual Studio 54 club. (My alter ego was standing, staring, and not getting it...)
I love the idea of flying though (in SL you can fly.) And I also love the fact that people are building fabulous buildings and interiors over there and you can just walk through.
Imagine Google Sketchup in SL. Nice...
I also see the potential:
-virtual art galleries to walk through: it is an easy and nice way to have an art exhibition.
To see that potential fully exploited I advice you to check out Workspaces Unlimited in Vooruit.
-Live concerts online. Enjoy a unique concert, go virtual skydiving, but sit in your living room.
(I actually hate being on the festivals because of the amount of people... Love the life aspect though, so virtual concerts are quite an alernative.)
-Talk to strangers from different places on earth. Is always enriching.
I also understand the commercial aspect, one can buy or sell stuff in SL.
(But why in hell would I buy a virtual swimming pool?)
I have to admit: I have several 'guides' to lead me through SL.
People I know in real life.
And the nice thing is, whoever you ask in SL to help you out, they will.
So go and take a look.

iPhoto
I was never keen on iPhoto since it was pretty basic. It imported your pictures and then started to make duplicates. It failed several times on friends of mine (and believe me, you don't want your pictures to be totally gone..)
It still copies files (though you can change that in your preferences), and on top of that you don't have much to say about the name of your files (which for me is yyyy_mm_dd_hh_ssmls_country_keyword_ID.filetype)
But there were certainly some major changes, which are pretty neat for RAW adaptation.
WHen you don't need to do a lot of photoshop, but just want to set the colors and the sharpness right, iPhoto can be very fast and preferred above other programs.
To me it looks they implemented some neat features from Aperture, you can play with the cool sliders to set everything right, all from within one panel.
It is not only cool, it is even very handy.
Click done and then export.
Fabulous. Really.
Nver fixed my pics so fast.
And they are raw (ok ok this probably also has to do with the fact this new MacBookPro is so much faster than my former pBook.)
I get to try Aperture in the near future. Which will probably be exactly what I need, adding those extra functionalities I want/need.
More on that later...

Telenet
Asked for ExpressNet Plus.
Received ExpressNet.
Pinged London and got this:
Can someone explain me why I ask for 15Mbps, I pay for 10Mbps and I get 5Mbps...
Not to talk about the upload...
Not to talk about pinging NY.
Grumbl...
(Meanwhile I am upgraded to ExpressNetPlus.
Results? 5561kbps download, 465 kbps upload)
It felt as if things are going faster though.
Maybe there are too many businesses during day over here.

One laptop per child
Don't they look cute?
At 140 bucks, I reckon there are more people who'll want one.
My mom for example only wants to surf with a portable.
There was a splendid idea, if you buy one, you'd buy one extra for a kid.
But I don't remember where I read that news.
I wouldn't mind paying double the price if that gives the laptop away.
In fact, I wouldn't mind giving 140 bucks in the end of the year to this kind of charity.

Ads as seen in Beirut today.
Now these are amazing advertisements:
support for the locals and yet a perfect ad...
They'll get a lot of free attention in the near future I believe.

Logical
“Logic is a very elegant tool,” he [Gregory Bateson] said, “And we’ve got a lot of
mileage out of it for two thousand years or so. The trouble is, you know, when
you apply it to crabs and porpoises, and butterflies and habit formation” — his
voice trailed off, and he added after a pause, looking out over the ocean — “you
know, to all those pretty things” — and now, looking straight at me — “logic
won’t quite do...because that whole fabric of living things is not put together by
logic. You see when you get circular trains of causation, as you always do in the
living world, the use of logic will make you walk into paradoxes.”
From Uncommon Wisdom: Conversations with Remarkable People by Fritjof Capra

Designersweekend Brussels
Years ago, I must have been like 12 or so, I was introduced to DesignersWeekend by my dad.
It was for 'profs only' back then, if I remember well, and I went along with my dad.
We were fed by design those days. (My dad used to manage a huge design shop in Avenue Louise)
17 years later I am still in love with beautiful stuff, and I am pretty sure the origin dates from back then, playing around between B&B Italia and DeSede, and many others. (At 14 I almost bought my first designers chair.)
Now piece by piece I try to gather the stuff I liked back then already.
Not this weekend but the next: DesignersWeekend in Brussels.
Anyone joining in?
Check the program here.

Bic Carpets
Today I had to record a VODcast at the Deloitte offices in Brussels.
And they had this beautiful corner with nice Barcelona chairs; but what struck both Kris and me more was the beautiful carpet accompanying it.
So soon I was taking a picture, and stting on my knees checking the brand of this beauty.
Bic it said...
So here I am, googling, and apparently, these beauties are produced in Belgium!:
For almost fifty years now B.I.C. (Belgian International Carpets) has been a leader in the market for high-quality woven floor covering. Our collections of broadloom and rugs in pure wool are appreciated for their creativity, originality and flexibility. These woven design carpets add a unique, personal and comfortable element to every particular interior. Architects and interior designers use them frequently for larger projects such as offices, shops, hotels ... and even aeroplanes.
Investments in our plants in Kortrijk and Wevelgem are always aimed at quality rather than quantity. Revolutionary and flexible production systems , an eye for trends, a sense of beauty and a strong service orientation ensure the future of our high-end design rugs.
And guess where they'll be presented (Yep, Brussels DesignWeekend, next week :) )
Mmmmm wouldn't they like to have a new website maybe? In return for a beautiful carpet?
