DreamHost Blog » Anatomy of a(n ongoing) Disaster..

DreamHost Blog; Anatomy of a(n ongoing) Disaster..: As I'm sure most of you already know, we've had nothing but troubles, large troubles, for pretty much the last three weeks. A lot of these troubles were our fault, a couple of them were at least ostensibly beyond our control, and they all compounded each other.

Here I'll try and go into as much detail as possible about what happened, why, and the steps we're taking to stop this sort of thing from ever happening again. I can't excuse what happened, just apologize and hopefully elucidate.

I have a DreamHost account, it was hot damn cheap compared to my other hosts.
I have a MediaTemple account too, and admitted, I once cancelled my account because their PHP used to be an older version than I needed. They paid back instantly. That was the reason, 6 months later, I took them again.
Since then, I stayed. Their uptime is great.

I took 2 accounts to be able to switch easily if needed.
The cheap prices in the States are a relief, compared to some European.

What happened now at DreamHost would make me cancel an account, but because of their communication they get my support: accidents happen.
I hope they do more than sending nice newsletters and apologizing, now they'll need to rebuild their credibility of uptime.

They deserve a 5 star for communication.

I'm also hosting (SharedServer) with Mediatemple as well. Their support is great but the uptime and the server's response time isn't the best of the best. Siteuptime.com and several similar services (pingability.com,...) often notify me of downtimes. I don't really care as the hosting is damn cheap and the features are superb but it needs to be mentioned. FTP connection is very slow, timeouts very short and PHP Safe mode plain sux. But, there are great perspectives: Ruby on Rails support, even more disk space and the end of PHP Safe mode!! So why should I switch? They're great but they're not God.
