PhotoBlog: 3 years.

3 years ago, begin October 2003, PhotoBlog.be launched. 30 users, friends and family, we had back then.

3 years later it is still nice to see what happened with PhotoBlog, when seeing on several blogs links to people's pictures.
Not to speak about the series of friends I made during those 3 years.

I still believe PhotoBlog was launched in a country way when blogging was a word not in libraries yet, and with features that are only today popular to the mass (We implemented Skype in September 2004, and podcasting in December 2004.)

Happy 3rd birthday, and keep on shooting!

Nice link to add: Genthology was formed by a bunch of Gentish PhotoBloggers,

(Disclaimer: I was one of the co-founders of PhotoBlog, PhotoBlog was sold to Pixagogo and later to Telenet.)

Let's party like it is '99...

Dykesandthecity summed up all hot (gay) parties for Autumn.

Let's see:
Dolly: October 10: Could be a good start of Autumn...
Planet Pussy: October 28th (Knowing that I am leaving for India on November 1th, things might be a little bit messy that period...)
Trouble: November 11: cannot miss...
Loveball: November 17: Way beyond my agenda, but when in Le Pulp in Paris, I wasn't so convinced about their music...
Well... we'll see then.

Shop around the corner...

When living in Israel, I got used to corner shops.
The tiny little shops, little markets with a roof on top of it.

Somehow I didn't remember seeing anything alike in Gent.
(Ok, the Turkish shops in the Sleepstraat kind of resemble, but still, in Israel these were a little larger, breathing a different atmosphere.)

Yesterday, I went to the shop around the corner, and suddenly I felt like in my former shop in Salame Street.

Tel Aviv is just around my corner :)

In one week, we have elections.

More and more younsters are voting for extreme right, that's why several artists organized concerts today, for tolerance.

More info on www.0110.be

But next to that, there are several side events.
Next Thursday musea and houses of culture will set of their fire alarms for 15 minutes. It is an emergency call for tolerance.
The project Sirene is an initiative of the famous painter Luc Tuymans.
More than 25 houses of culture will participate. All the employees and visitors will be evacuated out of the musea during those 15 minutes.

The One Minutes

1Mintitel

Apparently I'm one of the jury members of OneMinutesBelgianOpen.

Theoneminutes are videos of exactly one minute, including credits. Worldwide The One Minutes foundation and partners are organizing exhibitions, country competitions, award ceremonies, TV broadcasts and in 2008 the Olympic One Minutes in Beijing.

The Belgian Branch hosted by the Hogeschool Gent organizes, in collaboration with the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA), the official Belgianopen competition. The Awards will be granted October 26th at SPHINX cinema in Ghent during the ELIA conference 2006.

Curious to see!

I just became a FONero

Linus Alien Bill

FON is the largest WiFi community in the world. Our members share their wireless Internet access at home and, in return, enjoy free WiFi wherever they find another Fonero’s Access Point.

It all started as a simple idea. Why should you pay for Internet access on the go when you have already paid for it at home? Exactly, you shouldn’t. So we decided to help create a community of people who get more out of their connection through sharing.

We call members of the FON Community Foneros. It’s simple to become a Fonero. You just need to buy La Fonera, which enables you to securely and fairly share your home broadband connection with other Foneros.

Then when you’re away from home and you need Internet access, just log on to a FON Access Point, and you can use the Internet for free. You don’t need to take your router with you – you just need to remember your Fonero login and password.

Visit our maps and find thousands of FON Access Points worldwide.

As the world of WiFi is growing, you can do more and more for free. For example soon we will launch the Skype FON - a cool WiFi handset that lets you make free Internet calls from any FON Access Point.

Join the FON Community today by ordering La Fonera – a FON Social Router for just €/$ 5. (Offer valid until end of the year)

Yep I ordered my FON Router, for 5 euro and hope it will arrive soon...
I noticed there are a lot of Fonero's in Brussels and I hope many more will follow in Gent.
The nice thing about FON is: you open up your WIFI but only to people who open up theirs to you. So no mis-use. And all is encrypted. ILI.

Nokia launched Widsets

Nokia today announced the release of WidSets, a mobile widget platform available for Java MIDP 2.0 phones, including of course non-Nokia phones. Put short, WidSets is for the mobile what Netvibes is for the browser.
Add to my Widsets

I just made my first WidSet: you can now read my feed on your mobile through these Nokia Widsets. :)

Widsets is a way of browsing rss feeds on your mobile (and many more things, I can actually play sudoku now...)
Smart Phones are really becoming cool with these tools.

Check WidSets here.

(and if our newspapers are smart they build quickly there feeds in a widset, I already am subscribed to BBC World and many others..)

Shameless link: INHABITAT INTERVIEW: Michelle Kaufmann

Michelle Kauffman Prefab House interview

Our last Prefab Friday article featured Michelle Kaufmann's latest design, the mkSolaire. That same day, I had a chance to sit down with her at West Coast Green and ask her about her innovative green, modern, modular housing. Michelle has a very deep knowledge of the principles and practices that underlie the green building revolution, and a profound commitment to making green living accessible.

Video clip after the jump!

Counting down

178110265 A6Ce96F6Ff O

Today I started counting down:

-4 days before I have to give a lecture.
-7 days before Interieur 06 starts (and Dark celebrates its 5th birthday).
-15 days before I get to meet some -hopefully- really interesting people.
-20 days before I sign for my apartment.
-25 days before I go abroad...

Frontpage news: 1 in 10 kids don't know about the internet

Frontpage news on the Morgen...
Now, to me that's really a silly shift of information.
The glass is half empty or half full...
In this case it means that 9 in 10 kids do know the internet...

In '97 Internet was introduced in the libraries in Belgium -I remember being one of the few going each week 2 hours to learn about this thing, discovering email and chatchannels. Back then there were no lines for waiting...-
In 2000 fast ADSL was introduced, and just graduated and starting independent, I was one of the first to have such a line (at a cost of 50 euro a month, and an installation of 250 euro)

Let's assume that that's the point were internet got known: 2000.
Internet became accessible to a lot of people at reasonable prices.
(I know people like LVB and many others in institutions and universities knew about it earlier, but let's look at the mass..)

We are now 2006, and 9 kids in 10 know what the internet is and worked/played with it.

Isn't that impressive??

Party next week

796
I didn't made it last week to the amazing party in Antwerp, and last night I almost crashed in Kortrijk on the opening party of Interieur, and thus didn't end at the exclusive parties -although we had free tickets...-

We still have enough opportunities to go though...

Next week there is lost ninos, but I am not going.
Nope.

I am going to Almost Reality...
Definitely.

Masked ball to finish the International FilmFestival of Ghent.
I will not be me, I will be someone else. So don't worry if we don't meet, or do meet...

Have to find the masks yet...

Dreamhost

Few months ago, Dreamhost really blew up their good name, when suddenly their whole system started to crack down.
Although they kept good communications on the matter, their system didn't get any better, and I am sure many of you looked for another account.(Including me.)
I left some of my accounts over there, and transferred quite a few to another host I already had -Oh yes, I am betting on 2 horses all the time.-.

Few days ago, a colleague of mine was looking for a host to put some of his students, test accounts, to have them play around.
I advised him Dreamhost, but told him not to use it for professional reasons, since sometimes there are some problems.

He tested on my account and called me: 'This is blazing fast for no money..'
I checked, and heck, I must be upgraded to a new server, because suddenly my accounts are up to high speed.

I still don't advice it for business reasons, but I do think it is the perfect account for blogs and playing around.

If you are interested: using the promocode matuvu drops your bill with 20$.

Tomorrow at KASK

Kasklezingen1

Inge Henneman: “Het motto van mijn praktijk als 'beroepskijker' zou dit citaat van Philippe Dubois kunnen zijn: "As for photographs, don't believe everything you see ! Know how to see what is shown (and what hides itself).
Know how to see beyond, through and beside them. Look for the negative in the positive and the latent image at the heart of the negative. Move from the consciousness of the picture to the unconscious of the thought. Retraceonce again the endless path of the psycho-photographic apparatus, from the eye to memory, from traces to the unrepresentable. Cut through layers and strata like an archeologist. A photograph is only a surface, lacking in depth, but burdened with fantastic weight."

Written 2 years ago

I believe that in the future these news sources (blogs and alike) will gain more importance, the journalist will not longer be an unknown person, but turns into a person.
This personalisation is important, because it will be the main hold on to the truth.
Whereas we get lost in a web of information, not knowing what is true and what not, or what the sources are, this hold on to a person, from which you seem to know something, will become your reference, and you are no longer ready to beleive what the traditional media is telling you through their system of telexes.
As I am writing this, the first bloggers are allowed to offically be part of the Democratic National Convention hold in USA. Many journalists are surprised, but slowly the blogging world with its implications is becoming another standard in the internet and media world.
What is today a still no more than a strange word, will be common knowledge in short time.
A database of information is being written on personal blogs and as much pictures are being posted on as many blogs.
Some of them truthfully, others totally fiction.

Knowledge on subjects is no longer based upon what the news tells, but also on what google can give you on the subject, very often referring to blogs.
Other linkages, made into the blogging or found through search engines gives us more info on the matter, widening our view.
Recent numbers and researches tell us that people look on the web for news.
This knowledge might change the perception of news and images totally.
The internet is a source of news, and a new way of journalism will develop here.
Also photojournalism: When I speak of photojournalism as being dead, I am talking only about the concept of capturing a single image on a nitrate film plane, for publication in mass media. In the near future, visual stories will be told primarily through moving images and sound, on both on television and the web. The web will increasingly replace printed media. However, the role of the storyteller who can capture the events and people of our
time, and place them in perspective for our history, will only be enhanced. (
Dirck Halstead )

It will be a daring mission, since the longer, the more information, the harder it gets to be able to make the differentiation between truth and lie.

(Hmmm didn't change so much)

Cinema Display Question

I know some amongst you have a cinema display too.
And I know it rocks -especially when seeing prison break..-

But do you guys have the same problem as me?
On my Cinema Display light grey doesn't show...

Check the screen shot: no grey border...

Siteshot

I have the same problem all over (it is not only this border disappearing...)

Anyone an explanation?

Update: weirdest thing: I changed the settings of the cinema diplay -like tilting the screen with 90degrees- and then returned it to the former settings and now I do see the grey border...
Really weird...

Shel Israel knew about Snowblog...

Some weeks ago I was invited by Kris from Microsoft to be part of the bloggers meeting with Shel Israel.

Shel is like, well... a blogging guru ;)
Now, I have to admit I didn't hear the last part so well (about Shell) but I heard 'dinner', and Microsoft tends to invite people and treat them like real Belgian Bourgondic people: with good food. So I already said yes, without knowing about Shel.

So at noon we arrived at Belga Queen in Brussels -yep, that's that fancy restaurant with the fancy toilets...-

And I met truly interesting people (Jean Filip De Tender for example... Or finally Veerle irl)

And then I had an amazing conversation with Shel.
We talked about Snowblog, and then he said ' I heard about this project'.
Now there are projects alike, so I doubted this a little bit, but said it could be. And we continued talking.
And then again he asked 'In which media was this announced'. Well not so so much, some chinese magazines, some Israeli newspapers, some Belgian ones..
But he was convinced he knew about it.
And then suddenly he said 'Yeah sure, they talked about it and you on MIT, since you are busy with trying to integrate it on MIT, and there was this person saying to me, you have to check her blog.'

Now OK, tell me, how many chances this is happening?
I mean, you get to meet this person from the other side of the world, you are busy with blogging, but there are millions busy with blogging, and then suddenly he says 'Yeah I know this'

Frankly speaking, I am still a bit shaken about that.

SnowBlog is still evolving, and though we have the good ideas, and the efforts, of course it is non profit and we are lacking funds.
It will be integrated in more schools, but the main problem is always 'who is gonna pay for it' and then it turns out the schools have no money. Which is a pity, because true integration lies in education.
So growing is rather difficult.

Now I really want to thank Microsoft for this 'close encounter from the good kind'
And Shel, right now I am sending that promised email so we can continue the conversation. :)

Official

So what's up with me?
short posts here and there without real content, and some linking here and there.
The answer is simple: I am preparing for India, and I am leaving in 1.5 weeks...
I am (again) official photographer of our Prime Minister on this mission.

I'll try to make short reports on this site.
'Try' because, really, things are pretty busy on such a trip -whatever people might think of it..-
We are actually visiting 5 cities in 5 days, hopping planes, presenting 3 times a seminar on the economical advantages of Belgium, next to that, there is the official part of meeting leaders of the country, visiting special locations, and loads of meetings with business men, in the morning, at noon, and in the evening.
By the end of the day it is 2/3AM, and at 7AM the next meeting is planned.
Not to mention the fact that we arrive in a different time-zone from start.

There is loads of preparation one wouldn't think of: everybody needs briefing, everybody needs a back up, everybody needs a hotel-room and a car to get wherever he needs to go.
And since it is all urgent and high profile, there is security and sometimes the roads are emptied to get the cars where they should get...

These will be 3 hectic weeks.

Weird

I just received my computer back, and though all is running well, I am quite suspicious...

While installing I came across the following.
I must have installed Adium for 10 times or so. On none of my mac intels the offered version is working, it always crashes. The beta releases on the other hand works perfect...
-It actually is much better than the ordinary release..-

Anyone the same problem?

InfoWarRoom

799
Last night I went to InfoWarRoom at Vooruit.

I must be too much into stuff, because I thought nothing new was told.
I would have liked something more than the surface.
Jens Mortier told about the campaign (humo liegt) they had on the web.
C. thought it was interesting since she didn't know the campaign. Me on the other hand would have like to hear more about how they came to certain decisions and how they think they will wok into the future with internet playing a more extended role in the life of youngsters.

Anyhow, another thing in the presentation was 'technical difficulties'.
Quite some times they didn't manage to play the movies right away.
C. asked 'is it so difficult to make this play?'
My answer 'If you only knew...'
While looking at the screens I saw there must have been like at least 3 computers for the 3 screens, next to that one computer could take over the 3 screens to play simultaneously, and on top of that they wanted to play movies which isn't always that easy in Keynote.
There were several television screens that showed the speakers or the info from the computer, meaning that one of the 3 computers could take over the television screens and the videocam.
InfoWarRoom was also broadcasted life on the web.
That's what I call 'WOW'.
But that might have been the reason why things went wrong.

And that ladies and gents is the absolute horror for the person behind the computer.
Because the only thing you have to do is to have the show go on.
Nothing more, but when one thing goes wrong, you can be sure that you sweat like a horse.

In one week I need to present 3 keynotes in 3 different cities.
The keynotes are ready and tested.
We have a spare computer for when something goes wrong (oh no sire, we won't have the 'Microsoft Bill Gates moment' happening)
But you cannot know what is going on on the moment itself.
And frankly speaking, I will be nervous and I won't sleep.

It is a one hour presentation and after that it's gone, it will disappear out of the heads of the people, and that's the thing you recall when something went wrong: 'nobody died, nobody got hurt, and actually it really didn't matter.'
But I can assure you, the moment self, you die inside...

(How to tip: As for integrating movies in a Keynote: rip them with Handbrake to mpg4 and then drag them into your keynote. I can assure: it solved a lot of headaches for me...)
(Geert: hat off ;) but I guess next time you'll prefer one screen and few monitors less...)

Argentina

President Fernando de la Rua of the UCR centre-left Alliance, elected to a four-year term in 1999, promised a crackdown on corruption and tough fiscal measures to balance Argentina's budget. But after four years of recession and with an unemployment rate of more than 20%, the Argentine people had had enough. De la Rua's austerity plans prompted nationwide strikes and demonstrations, which grew violent after the government instituted harsh restrictions on bank withdrawals. Argentina plunged into economic and political turmoil in December 2001 when it defaulted on a 132000000000.00 loan repayment - the largest default in history. De la Rua and many of his government ministers resigned amid rioting, looting and widespread civil chaos in which 27 people were killed.

On January 1, 2002, Eduardo Duhalde became Argentina's fifth president in two weeks. A staunch Perónist, Duhalde took a populist and protectionist stance, though his background was mired in rumours of corruption. To achieve a more realistic economy (and to secure assistance from the International Monetary Fund) Duhalde unpegged the peso from the dollar, which caused the peso to lose almost 70% of its value.

and then in 2002:
Saturday, 20 April, 2002, 07:26 GMT 08:26 UK
Argentina closes all banks

followed by:
2002 November - Argentina defaults on an $800m debt repayment to the World Bank, having failed to re-secure IMF aid. The World Bank says it will not consider new loans for the country.
Resulting in the bankrupt of the country.

Stories of the people.

So what will be the situation in November 2007, 5 years after the bankrupt of Argentina?
To be continued ;)

Tjernobyl

Tjer

April 2006 marked the twentieth anniversary of the most devastating nuclear civil catastrophe ever. The radioactivity that was freed in the explosion of the nuclear factory in Chernobyl (ex USSR) contaminated the whole region, its inhabitants, it's soil, water and air.

You can see a portfolio of Christoph Bolten's work at http://milim.com/HTML/new_work.htm

Christophe Boltens says "When I first set foot into the Zone of Chernobyl I was immediately surprised by the peacefulness of this landscape, underlined by the fact that everything was covered in snow. Abandoned villages, towns, industrial complexes all felt very serene and only my knowledge of what had happened in the past instilled a slight feeling of horror into the scene. Monuments of human achievement: art, technology, architecture, medicine ?all falling to pieces. Nature is taking over again and entropy is at work. In the back of your mind is always the omnipresent yet invisible force called radiation. The whole scene overwhelms you with so many different feelings ? some negative, some positive."

I own something

Oh yes, I own computer and a motorcycle and a little bit more, but actually that was worth a lot.
Nothing really worth a penny, no big things.
My apartment contains 2 seats, a sofa, a carpet, a bed, and a computer-table. And the computer. A camera. And some clothes.
Oh and the motorcycle. Already mentioned that one.
That's it.

Until today.

I bought an apartment.
I signed at the notary. -I really did... me the one afraid of commitments.-
It lies in the middle of historic Ghent. It's really small.
But it's mine.
-or it will be in 25 years...-

Wallah... Who would ever imagined this...
I must be an adult now...

Meanwhile in Iraq...

“We’re closer now than ever, if we’re not already in civil war, and I don’t know what can stop it now. Except maybe U.S. troops back on the streets.” — senior Coalition advisor to the Ministry of Interior.

Hans Blix agrees.

I still wonder if this is what we aimed for while saving a country from a dictator...

T-post

tpost.jpg

The world's first international news magazine on cotton, T-post is a subscription t-shirt service based in Sweden. Silkscreened onto American Apparel tees, subscribers get a new "issue" every six weeks with a design about a current news item on the outside and a short article on the topic printed inside. Many of the stories covered by T-post are outside the radar of the traditional news media like conversations overheard on the subway or microchips implanted in butterflies but that is precisely why the editors at T-Post think they're important. Available worldwide, each edition costs €26 including shipping and back issues are not for sale "you can't go trying to buy one like 'you was with it way back when."

cool...

Elgato EyeTV Hybrid

I bought it few weeks ago, but due to my hectic schedule, I tested it, couldn't reach any channels and lied it aside.
But then Peter came and walked around with the antenna, and apparently something was wrong there. Some kind of interference.
So today I bought an extension cable, placed the tiny antenna near the window, and, jihaa: I have clear DTT now.
Een and Canvas.
The view is cristal clear.

Perfect to do some video recordings and watch them later.
Or to see the news.

-We don't have cable for this reason: to keep away from an appealing screen...-

This export is made for the iPod video format...

Leaving tomorrow

Ok, later on today I'll be checking al material and if all is ok, but tomorrow night we're leaving for India.

It is the first time of all these trips all is ready, and I don't need to do anything until arrival.
Really weird. I feel a little uncomfortable in not having anything to do but to get my trousers from dry cleaning.. lol

Reports will follow tomorrow. Bringing my N93 along :)

Media Temple's new system...

The Next Generation of Redundant Hosting
In the past, your site (along with hundreds of other sites) was stored on one server making it vulnerable to resource limits and inevitable hardware failure. Beyond simple load balancing, the Grid uses an ever-expanding "cluster of clusters" all working together to serve your site with blazing fast response times. Resource limits, hardware failures and everything else you hate about shared hosting is history! The Grid was designed and built with numerous layers of redundant hardware, software, network and power systems. Downtime caused by device failures will be a distant memory once you switch to The Grid.

100GB storage and 1TB bandwidth for 20$ a month.
You want a reference? Group94 is hosting there too. (Belgians indeed).

Web-based or computer-based

I already said long time ago I don't believe in web-based apps nor in web-based data.
Don't trust it a sec...
I need to have a computer and a backup, and then another backup...
Nothing esoteric floating in the air...

I do believe in access on a distance.
Like Mc Nucle.

Access your Mc Nucle from anywhere around the world. As long as you have internet access, your data will be reachable.
The Mc Nucle is a multi-player server. Many different sorts of players can access the Mc Nucle directly: media centers, dvd recorders, PDAs, iTunes, explorers on Windows and Mac, the Nucle Browser.
Any Universal Plug & Play enabled media player is supported by the Mc Nucle. Most new networked media centers, dvd players, dvd recorders and stereo systems will support UPnP. You can then use your remote control to browse your Mc Nucle Server and fetch that latest home movie you dropped in.

29 euro and Belgian...
No more need to convince me.

Which bank and why?

Since few days I am a very good customer of Fortis.
Not because I like them so much, but because they granted me a loan...
And thus, most of my activities are located over there, because they kindly requested such thing before granting the loan.

To be truthful, nothing changed much from the situation before. I am already a customer of Fortis since I was 12, getting my first card back then. -which was already early-adopted... thanks to my parents who decided their children should know the value of money by being responsible for their own savings.-

I have an account at Dexia too. At 16 I decided relying on only one bank was horrible especially when one day my card wasn't working anymore and I couldn't get any money.- Dexia had the best conditions in those days.

13 years later a lot has changed: internet banks are available, and we can access all bank offices to withdraw money with a card from a different bank. The reasons why I decided to rely on Fortis or Dexia are not valuable anymore.
I'll have to stick to Fortis for the next 25 years, but I am seriously thinking of changing my Dexia account to somewhere else.

Rabobank for example has much higher interest rates and the account is for free -but it has no bank or creditcards available-

My needs?
I want a Mastercard Gold -it has a travel insurance included in the price, thus making it very cheap for me-
I want a savings account with high interest.
I want internet banking.
And a card off course, allowing to withdraw money out of a wall.

What would you advice me, and why?
