Dreamhost
Few months ago, Dreamhost really blew up their good name, when suddenly their whole system started to crack down.
Although they kept good communications on the matter, their system didn't get any better, and I am sure many of you looked for another account.(Including me.)
I left some of my accounts over there, and transferred quite a few to another host I already had -Oh yes, I am betting on 2 horses all the time.-.
Few days ago, a colleague of mine was looking for a host to put some of his students, test accounts, to have them play around.
I advised him Dreamhost, but told him not to use it for professional reasons, since sometimes there are some problems.
He tested on my account and called me: 'This is blazing fast for no money..'
I checked, and heck, I must be upgraded to a new server, because suddenly my accounts are up to high speed.
I still don't advice it for business reasons, but I do think it is the perfect account for blogs and playing around.
If you are interested: using the promocode matuvu drops your bill with 20$.

Mediatemple started to be slow too and after some complaining they moved my sites to another shared server. I also got two months of free hosting (the yearly bill arrives to months later).
Dreamhost misses that little creative touch which Mediatemple has. But I can't tell which one is the best.
Posted by Bart | October 16, 2006 11:24 AMDreamhost claims to have found the network problem (about a month ago) and after fixing it I haven't had any more problems and speed is back up to normal.
Anyway, you can read about the problem on their blog.
Posted by stijn | October 16, 2006 2:45 PMI have kriskhaira.com on Dreamhost and yes, they must've improved their servers recently because it's a lost faster. It's very obvious to me because I FTP and SSH to my account regularly all the way from Malaysia.
Posted by Kris Khaira | October 16, 2006 3:12 PMThen what would you suggest "for business reasons" (i.e. decent quality for a good price)?
Posted by kpi | October 16, 2006 11:38 PMthat's a good question...
for business reasons one would take an account in the own country to speed up the network.
one would take a 'personal hosting' read a company you can reach all the time.
in the end the client pays.
I checked and I still like webservice.be for the small sites (especially when something goes wrong there is ALWAYS answer within 3-4 hours, but very often immediately) and then there is combell.be which is not so cheap but then again not so expensive. also direct contact. I am sure there are other that might convince me, and they are welcome to write why they are good...
