Carl De Keyzer @ Fotomuseum

Bike Week Daytona Beach Usa 1991 Tcm7-35229
Today, I skipped a day, and decided to get inspiration at the FotoMuseum.

Carl De Keyzer, one of the few Magnum Photographers, graduated at the same academy I graduated. And today, the same school decided to visit his retrospective.
And Carl was going to give a lecture.

It turned out very interesting.

The highlights to remember:
Magnum mainly gets its money out of cultural and or commercial jobs. About 80%, against only 20% editorials.
That's the opposite of 10 years ago, when 80% of the jobs were editorial.
The prices for editorial jobs have dropped significantly the last years.
(It all started since the coming of Corbis who bought most agencies and even tried to buy Magnum)
Carl cannot live from these editorial jobs only or even from his books. To make a living he does the commercial work. (I think this is a stunning evolution...I don't mind the commercial work, but the fact a famous and good photographer cannot live from editorial work anymore...)

Most of his jobs come through his (splendid) website.

And yep, it gave me the feeling again 'Take the camera and go for it.'

I saw his photographs too at the Fotomuseum and they were absolutely beautiful. He really captured the essence of the people he shot...
