Making sense in the city (symposium)
This symposium focuses on the impact of global urbanisation on those cultural, religious and other ways which generally give human beings meaning and direction in their lives. We refer to these as 'sense-making' processes. It is a fact that now over half of the world population lives in urban contexts, varying from historical cities (of the European and Asian type) with heritage character to the new continuously changing urbanised areas with multimillion concentrations of people in the so-called Third World.
By 2030 estimates are that over 70% of the world's population will live in an urban context (Castells, 2002).
Sounds interesting...

Osteopath
You can't imagine the start of my weekend...
Somehow I managed to make a wrong movement, resulting in a strange noise, followed by blocked neck...
After 10 minutes wondering how the heck I would get out of the bed, I finally managed to move, rollover and get out without being broken.
By now I DO understand why turtles cannot get up when lying on their shield.
Anyhow, I tried to get hold of a osteopath. And lucky me, my friend Koen was willing to give me a treatment on a Saturday evening.
So at around 8PM he ordered me in the strangest positions one can imagine, while pulling and pushing me gently in all directions.
Although in Belgium osteopathy is still not accepted as a regular treatment (and thus one does not get refunded) it does seems logical to me our body is a puzzle and sometimes the pieces loosen up a bit.
Osteopathic principles
These are the eight major principles of osteopathy and are widely accepted throughout the osteopathic community.
(1) The body is a unit.
(2) Structure and function are reciprocally inter-related.
(3) The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms.
(4) The body has the inherent capacity to defend and repair itself.
(5) When the normal adaptability is disrupted, or when environmental changes overcome the body’s capacity for self maintenance, disease may ensue.
(6) The movement of body fluids is essential to the maintenance of health.
(7) The nerves play a crucial part in controlling the fluids of the body.
(8) There are somatic components to disease that are not only manifestations of disease, but also are factors that contribute to maintenance of the disease state.
These principles are not held by osteopaths to be empirical laws, nor contradictions to orthodox medical principles; they are thought to be the underpinnings of the osteopathic perspective on health and disease.
The result: after Koen finished the treatment, I was able to move my neck again.
Two days later it still hurts a bit but I can assure you that without the treatment things would feel different.
And yes, it turned out to be a wonderful weekend :)

Diversity: good work has no color
I have a company but only one employee: me.
If I would have a big company the diversity agreement is something I'd integrate immediately.
When working in de past for a major interim company, I was stunned to see how many of our clients weren't willing to accept foreigners/immigrants.
But diversity is more than colour, it is about taste, about age..
Don't you love walking in the streets and seeing all this diversity of people enriching our culture, expanding our views?
Don't hesitate to sign the Diversity Agreement for employers if you are one thinking alike. Because giving a sign, speaking out is the best one can do.
If you are interested in integrating a good diversity management, then check Alain the diversitymanager's site.

Gaza Airport
I got a mail from Block Magazine, a magazine that seems similar to our A Prior.
They heard about my works I took at Gaza Airport some years ago and were interested in seeing them, considering them for print in their next issue on Occasional Cities:
Block 4# Occasional Cities (April 2007) examines contemporary paradigms of temporality in urban areas through local and global projects and texts.
This volume is a part of “Occasional cities. Post-it city and other forms of temporality” an international project that sets out to investigate the different overlapping uses of urban territory, through the perspectives offered by architecture, urban design and the visual arts.
And again I find myself in the Middle East, scrolling through memories:
The background:
I was brought into Gaza Airport by my taxi driver, who found it important to show me around. I landed over there by accident.
It was the second time in my life I saw an empty airport (only 2 years before I had seen Bagdad Airport empty, but no luck in taking pictures over there.)
Here I was allowed to take pictures.
Nothing so surreal as an empty airport.
The silence struck me.
The pictures:

Second Life
Clopin asks me if I want to talk to Flair about Second Life.
I visited Second Life few times and I am not convinced, but again, I am sure youth is.
Now my tip to Flair is: why are you looking to Second Life players through weblogs?
I mean, to me, finding Second Lifers in the blog world is like looking for meat in a bakery... Second Life people are gamers, and chatters, while bloggers are mainly writers. And off course there will be a lot of bloggers testing Second Life (we are early adopters after all.) but I am not convinced Second Life is our 'tool'.
Why don't you make an alter ego in Second Life and take your interviews over there? Because it is that simple: go over, fly to an island, and start talking to people. Write down your own experience, start to talk to other avatars and try to find your way around. That's how we did it.
There wasn't one person that didn't help me over there. So I am sure you'll find them too.
As for other SL's, I refer to Corneel, my real life neighbor, he seems to have spent more time in Second Life.
Me, for now, prefer the delights of my First Life above the virtual one.
It seems more 'touchable' for the moment :)

Funny story
So apparently Flair is not the only one sending out journalists to cover Second Life...
Humo did the same.
And apparently they do get to this site, while googling or being referred. And immediately go to Corneel (because I believe after reading my post, not willing to contact me anymore ;) ).
But who is Corneel??No contact info on the site. grin.
My real time neighbour was interviewed by Humo on SecondLife.
The journalist mentioned 'I found something on Monuments and this Corneel, but I couldn't figure out who Corneel is...'
He grinned: 'He is sitting next to you.'
She didn't understand it.
'He's me!'
'But you are P*'
'Yes, but I do have an alter-ego: Corneel'
Ok... ROTFL...
Btw to journalists doing research: surf to a DNS site, and fill in the fields. Press enter. Get the info you were looking for...
Or just leave a comment on Corneel's blog. You might be surprised someone answers...
(C'mon guys. Sorry to say, but how hard can it be?:
Maybe check the meaning of Journalistiek / Journalism:
Journalism is a discipline of collecting, analyzing, verifying, and presenting. Why do I have the feeling lately the last word became so much more important than the first ones?)

The perfect home system
I am busy with it for a a while: the perfect home system set up.
I do believe we are busy integrating computers in the living room (saw a lot of those hybrid systems in hotel rooms around, with a keyboard next to the tv, enabling you to surf on the huge flatscreen)
I don't watch tv very often. Actually I watch it mainly to see series. And when I want to see them. So video on demand is a great invention...
So I tried to figure out the best set up:
My living room would contain wireless internet. There would be no cable available, but DTT is flying in the air, and I hate an ugly TV in a living room since it 'fills' the space and 'cries for attention'. In most living rooms I go into, the space is centered around the big box.
'Me don't like at all.'
I do like a nicely designed audio system. WIth very good sound if possible. And I do like the effect of Dolby Surround.
And a tv that is hidden, or doesn't feel like taking up the space. Or by preference, a projector.
Building such an living room used to be very expensive, but these days, prices dropped a lot.
As I see it, I would put a MacMini in my living room, connected to or a computer full HD screen, or a HD flatscreen, or a by preference this projector, using HDMI (computercable, flatscreenconnections). For audio there would be an optical connection with my surround system that allows me crystal clear sound. My iPod would be connected using a dock, towards the surround system.
For sure there would be wireless internet, and a keyboard.
My mac would have EyeTV for seeing DTT (that is Een and Canvas)
The Airport Expresses allow me to stream the audio from my different macs wirelessly toward the audio system while using shared music in iTunes to enable all available audio.
Plugin some extra Airport Expresses around the house would save me an expensive B&O system that I cannot (yet) afford :P
Streaming video wirelessly is still hard, but I would not need it because the files would be stored on the extra harddrive, connected to the MacMini using firewire, the fastest connection available.
The upcoming iTV from Mac might solve a lot of these riddles, but as one sees, my current setup is carefully chosen and can be extended. The MacMini is in the first place a home computer and upon arrival of the iTV, will become a home computer again.
As I am checking what I still need:
-The Cinema System
-The projector/TV (though I can manage with the 23 inch screen for the moment)
-The iPod Dock and some cables.
And someone who is willing to come and sit on the couch to enjoy the movie (and has to bring popcorn)
Mmmm, running to the nearest audio shop nearby...

If I found the right Hifi already?
.. someone asked.
I think I actually did last week.
I looked at Bose and was amazed by the sound. But there are no digital connections like DVI yet, and the system starts at 1600 euro. And it is soooo ugly. I think I want to buy that set in 5 years or so (and only if there design gets better, or goes back 5 years in time when it looked so much more beautiful)
I looked at 2.1 systems, and was no convinced. So I wanted 5.1.
The Samsung XT100 got an EISA Award, and it maintains the most important connections I was longing for:
an optical-in (for audio connection with my Mac Mini. -Eat that mister Fnac who was convinced that he was right when saying that combo plugs weren't possible-), a 2 kinch for my iPod, and a HDMI for my connection with or my MacMini or my future flatscreen/projector.
Those should do for the moment.
The set has no DVD recorder, but my mac mini IS a HD recorder, and has a TV card, so why bother.
It has a DVDplayer, thus a CD player, it can be connected to my computer, thus iTunes and internet. It has FM, and can play DIVX.
It has no traditional connections (like scart and s-video) but who needs them?
There is a USB connection, that enables connecting your camera/mp3player or HD to the system to show images/video/music.
Apparently one can by the rear speakers wireless, so that is a real saver for cables in the house.
The only thing I need to hear is the sound... :)
Update:
I heard the sound and was a little disappointed.
But the guy in the store had an alternative, featuring the same connections (actually 2 times USB, optical in and HDMI)
but a different sound: Harman Kardon.
Anyone knows that these speakers are in general pretty good.
And the design...
The design is better according to me. :)

Flanders invoked independence.
Haha, best joke ever. I wonder how well they prepared it and if it was the purpose of making such a hype out of it. Best marketing action ever :)
Well well well. Who ever thought this could be happening.
RTBF is on the map again... And now we can start wondering who'll be the one being kicked out. Journalists, directors or politicians.
Update: Actually I don't have a problem with this action. As promethée says: the Walloons would be faced with the fact their economy and their Marshall plan isn't working too well.
It is indeed a good exercise for the mind for what could happen.
When we look to the broader circle: nor BBC or CNN are making any reports on the frontpage of their websites. SO ladies and gentlemen: this news ain't news ;)
Update: Watch the docu online (in French).
Update 2: We made it into Time magazine.
I was having lunch with some people in politics, and they said 'Belgium is in a bad light due to this. We are doing all this trouble to get investors in Belgium and now this story..'
Of course they have a point...

Discovery: Pro tips for Mac
Tip of the Week
Instant Slide Shows Wherever You Are
Let’s say you open a window and there are 20 photos in that window. Want to see a quick slide show of those photos? Just press Command-A to select all the photos, then Control-click on any photo and from the contextual menu that appears, choose slideshow. A full-screen slide show of those photos (complete with a nice smooth dissolve transition) will appear onscreen.
If you want to see only some of the photos in a slide show, instead of selecting all the images, just Command-click on the photos you want in your slide show before Control-clicking on one and choosing slideshow. To quit the slide show in progress, just press the escape key on your keyboard.

Photoshop CS3
I thought you'd all like to know that Adobe just released a beta version of Photoshop CS3 for general download. The installer is unlimited as long as you have a valid PS CS2 or Creative Suite 2 serial number else it's a 30 day trial.
From my initial exploration there doesn't seem to be a lot of new stuff in this version, apart from a nice new interface and a new variables framework which I have no idea how to use yet.
Obviously one of the big things for Intel Mac users is that it's a Universal Binary. Finally!

War of the Worlds
While Belgium is getting over their 'War of the worlds', the original War of the Worlds is quite a shocking radio emission, dating 1938.
Via Corneel: surely read his post, which is really interesting:
This hoax reminded me of the alien invasion broadcast in 1938 that caused a widespread reaction among the millions of listeners. The radio-adaptation was extremely detailed, just like the RTBF hoax this week.
Many people have heard of this incident but only a few have actually listened to the 55 minute play. Being a sci-fi fanatic I think the radio adaptation of War of the Worlds is a masterpiece. Here is a link to a downloadable mp3 (via). Take a bottle of wine, dim the lights and listen to it.
While you listen try to keep in mind that the people in those days were genuinely frightened. They were living in a time where tension and anxiety were building up (it was just before WW2). The strange thing is that they would believe anything (an alien invasion???).
We are also living in a time of anxiety. Beware of what you believe!
And the question in the end is certainly:
'How reliable is the “official news”? Can we trust them? Are they too powerful? How will we get our reliable news in the future?'
And how will be teach our children the message 'be aware.'

Why 6.30? Because we had to get in Brussels at 9(!!)
It sounds crazy to foresee 1.5 hours for 50 km.
But things got worse:we left at 7.20 and arrived at 9.50.
Yep, 2.5 hours for 50 km.
I have a huge 'bad-morning mood' when waking up too early, and one can not expect a decent conversation before 9AM. (Just in case you meet me that early and my face reads 'thunder': it ain't you!)
I have been working in a carpentry for one year, and work started at 8AM. I almost had forgotten these awful mornings, but today, suddenly it all came back.
I am a so much happier person since I wake up at 8.30/9. I work longer to compensate. I am surely much more productive, and A LOT nicer. :)
Next to that, as a car-free person, I don't get to be stuck in traffic often, and if so, it ain't at 8 in the morning.
So I also forgot how many people drive to work ALONE.
I understand people need a car to get to work, not all jobs are easy accessible by train or bus. But so many cars with one person inside.
My co-driver pointed out right: they should make smaller cars, so we could double the amount of cars onto the roads. Or double the roads.
That's the next point: why do people drive really huge cars, like land rovers and huge jeeps? Alone?
It seems that only women are allowed to drive 'small cars' and men need more status. Or something like that...
I don't get it. We all complain about environment, and the global warming. But are we willing to let the car at home?
I love taking the train (except for when it refuses to close the doors ;) ): it allows me to work. It doesn't get me stressed. And it never took me 2.5 hours to get me somewhere.
As for the car: De Lijn and Cambio are cooperating these days. Check it out.
(PS: Don't get me wrong: I am not against cars. And the text above is not negative whining -except for the first part :) - It just got me wondering.
I am pretty sure one day I'll buy a car. I love sitting in a convertible with heating chairs :) but sometimes I just don't get the advantage of driving into traffic jams.)

5 Things you probably didn't know about me.
So the baton was passed to me by Kristiaan.
There are many things you don't know about me.
Figuring out the top 5 to release is pretty difficult...
1. I stopped wearing skirts or dresses from 5 onwards.
I was very decisive in it, and my mother never got to change the idea.
Until I was about 13, I was a tomboy (my sister will say it lasted much longer) and I was often send to the men's room. I didn't mind the first back then, but I was stunned by the latter.
When 17, I had to wear a skirt, because our French teacher found it a necessity: oral exam French had to be in a dress. I passed the exam, but I never forget the horror.
At Chiro, we had this funny uniform (a kind of funny skirt), which I wore. My girlfriend got horny when seeing me. So I didn't mind :)
I think I don't look like a tomboy anymore, but I still don't wear dresses.
The day I arrive at home in a dress, my mom will laugh until she pees in her pants.
2. I used be a smart ass with many points in elementary school. But when doing our cantonal exams (at 12) I refused to write down the expected answers for theology because I didn't believe what they were saying. (God created Adam and Eve? C'mon) So I didn't turn out to be the 'first of our canton' My school teacher was furious 'because I was stupid stubborn'.
3. I hated losing. Losing whatever. I was a bad loser. (Sometimes I still am.) But when I started competition basket, and losing the whole first season, I learned how to deal with it.
Since then, I still don't like losing, but I can accept and even admit my mistakes.
4. I once had a huge discussion at my very strict catholic college, when arriving with a hat. They told me I had to take it off. I refused (Wearing hats was pretty fashionable back then). It was a ugly hat. I would never wear it again. It was a statement.
(Like I made many useless statements back then)
Wearing sport shoes was prohibited by our school rules. Wearing a hat wasn't. I think they changed that rule the next year.
Later that year we initiated a strike in our school because we weren't allowed to stand still/sit during recreation time. All scholars refused to walk and sat on the ground. We refused to get into the classes again.
Our dean got furious. I was called and shouted at, since I was representative for the scholars.
I swore I would never send my kids to the same school, but I do think it made me the way I am: eager to do things my way.
(This school is still driving kids to strike.)
5. Many people cannot figure out my origins when they hear me talking. As heard in the movie above, the accent in our region is awful. I took extra classes to work the accent away.
I think I can speak pretty flat (without an accent) and sometimes adapt to mislead people.
But sometimes people figure it out. When I say hod instead of god ;)
I am passing the stick to:
-Dykes and the City
-On the face
-Maanzand

Shopping for books
As I am collecting Christmas presents, I ended up in a bookstore.
The thing is: I can find a list of books I want for myself. But it is so hard to find a book for someone else.
Nice books you might want to read:
Gedichten, Herman De Coninck
Icarus achterna, Hans Crijns
In het hart van AlQaeda, Omar Nasrin
Lezende vrouwen, Stefan Bollman

Linklove
I am stunned.
4th week, without any publication or demand on this site to vote for me, no banner on the right side for linklove, and yet you voted me to nr. 40.
I am so honored. Really.
(I never expected to be on this list, knowing that I am not included in other lists ;) )
I guess that's the part I like about this initiative: bloggers are showing appreciation for others (although apparently it is turning into a real contest by now.)

The Unseen Video
The Unseen Video is a weather controlled, dynamic music video generator that has the goal of creating new synergies between the music, the video, and the surroundings of the viewer. The site creates a unique flash video that is gauged on the weather and local time from the viewer's position
Because the inputs to the video generator are ever-changing and dynamic, you'll never see the same video twice. Sure, it may look similar from minute to minute, but come April it will be completely different.

Person of the year
Time made 'all of us' person of the year.
When I see such things, I keep on wondering:
is this really what Time thinks, or this is a rather good marketing stunt?
I have the same idea about the Clickx contest.
Maybe it is because I got involved in marketing so much this year, I can't put it out of my mind.
John is right: bloggers point to each other. Nothing wrong with that according to me: it makes the strength of their network, and it is probably the reason why bloggers score so high in Google.
I guess in the beginning first time bloggers didn't figure that out, but by now, everyone knows. And everyone uses it.
It all started with simple blogrolling, but then it became favorite polls (I posted several of those in the past weeks, just to see how fast they get adopted, and I can tell you, they are wide-spread in a very fast way)
And then the batons became popular.
In fact according to me, it isn't about the poll, or the baton, it is about the message inside: if it is good, as in funny or cool or interesting or nice to do, or nice to know, 'linklove' works.
It came to me when reading this post: NYT gave in by adding Digg and other buttons. Why? To create more linklove. Why? To get a higher google rate, to have more page views, to get more clickthroughs. Why? Very simple: To have more money for the ads on their pages.
So if Time makes us 'person of the year', is this because they really think so, or is this to make 'linklove': have the funny message, with the nice 'you on the cover'-marketing being spread on as many pages as possible, thus creating thousands of clickthroughs, with a bunch of revenues as result?
If you ask me if I like the baton or the Time cover, I'll say the baton: it is fun, nice and actually teaches me something about someone else. While the latter ain't nothing more than an easy use, a good marketing stunt. Because, c'mon: are we worth to be the person of the year? What did we do, but fill the web with nonsense ;)

Question to tech savvies
I need to implement a polling for a website.
In general the main concern is cheating of the participants (c'mon, do we really believe 2girls came in so high ;) )
Now there are many ways to try to avoid it:
filtering on IP, putting a cookie.
But can one of the technies amongst you who reads this, tell me which system I should use?
Thanks so much.

ICE number
Imagine: a person is driving a car, and gets involved in an accident. The person is taken to the hospital. One finds his identity card, mobile etc.
A mobile full of numbers.
But who to contact?
A nurse came up with an idea: let's create the ICE number: In Case of Emergency.
Insert a new entry in your mobile: ICE Mom, and add the number.
For every next person you want to be contacted add ICE2, ICE3 and so on.
Doesn't cost you a penny, but can be very useful.

Pas de Calais
Total blog silence for few days.
With reason.
I was here, feeling like a queen in France.
At a 1.5 hour drive from Ghent, it is the perfect refuge.
Alex has internet, but I didn't even touch it for a sec. (The proof I am not an internet addict after all.)
The phone was silent for 3 days, the books were numerous, the walks cold, and the sea-food delicious.
If you ever need that 2 days away from everything, trust me, this is the place :)
*When going in winter, don't forget to take the thermal underwear. -I know someone who'll finally agree on this one.-

What tarot card are you?

You are The High Priestess
Science, Wisdom, Knowledge, Education.
The High Priestess is the card of knowledge, instinctual, supernatural, secret knowledge. She holds scrolls of arcane information that she might, or might not reveal to you. The moon crown on her head as well as the crescent by her foot indicates her willingness to illuminate what you otherwise might not see, reveal the secrets you need to know. The High Priestess is also associated with the moon however and can also indicate change or fluxuation, particularily when it comes to your moods.

"Touch" interactive installation lights up Brussles' Dexia Tower
"Touch" interactive installation lights up Brussles' Dexia Tower:
Apparently the Dexia Building in Brussels is 'LED up' :
You can currently catch the "Touch" interactive art installation by LAb[au] that's bathing the city's Dexia Tower in multi-colored blinkin' lights. More specifically, all 4,200 of the tower's windows has been outfitted with RGB LED bars (besting the M-INT Kobe building's 2,800 blue LEDs), which can be flipped on and off or changed color at will (click though to the live video stream to see it in action). What's more, the entire light show is controllable via a series of touch screens at the base of the tower.
Don't wait too long: the whole thing set to be shut off January 15th.
