Happy 2007
My first sms received in this new year came from the Palestinian Territories: Yasser wishing me a good 2007.
I am wishing you the same I wished him: all what you want and much more.
Happy 2007!
(Dad and littl' bro, presents and new year's letters...)

MacWorld...
While everyone is rushing to the stores for bargains, in the States the countdown started again...
Will there be an iPhone, will there be an iTV?
And if the first 30 years were just the beginning, what is going to happen next... (lol)
(No I am giving any predictions, the only thing that can follow is disappointment.)

Work for the taxes
According to this research, in Belgium we work 3 days for the taxes. (tx Eskimokaka)
For independents, without kids and partner, the taxes are the highest.
As if I didn't know this... I am currently giving 60% away of my income. Thanks very much.
Would I switch jobs? No sir!
Do I think things have to change? Yes certainly. I cannot understand we are the only country in the world giving unemployment fees without an ending limit. (in other words, you can be unemployed and get a fee until you die...)
The fact is, there are way to many people abusing this.
Actually I don't mind to pay taxes, although I prefer to pay as less as possible.
Taxes should be used to send kids to school, give them scholarships, to repair the roads, to give us stuff like cheap public transport and so on.
Actually most of this is being done.
The only thing that drives me mad is the fact that the people who pay the most get least.
Because my parents were independent and 'earned too much' we never got a scholarship. When they divorced, we still didn't get a scholarship, although times were really difficult, and my sis and I had to work to pay off our school. Because we worked, we almost lost our 'child money'...
After that things got better. I started working and studying again, and I got some scholarships to go abroad.
One day I want to give my kids the same possibilities, I hope they grab them...
But I better start saving for their school money as I probably be in the same range as my parents 'earning too much' (while actually in the end I don't earn more than most of you...)

Online invoicing.
I am working currently on a job for a tax office.
A presentation for a fair.
But their product is great: online invoicing, linked to the tax office.
Check the demo.
The advantages are clear:
-access everywhere.
-the invoices are straight at your tax accountants office, he can guide you if there are mistakes.
-all your invoices are straight at your tax accountant: no need to fill in those gaps at the end of the quarter.
-integration with their software is optimal.
Belgian tax ruling is pretty complicated and most invoicing programs are not sufficient. Most software is pretty expensive.
For a small business this is really great.
I guess my current tax accountant is not going to like my next question...

Zwei: Bags For Mobile People
Zwei is one bag, with many possibilities. The German bag designer created a unique system allowing the user to swap from a shoulder/messenger bag style to a shopping-bag tore handle, and then back to a shoulder strap thanks to a magnetic buckle, which also can be disconnected and re-used as a waist strap where necessary (running, etc). You can also add what they call a Klick Fix system to secure any of the three bag designs to the front of a bicycle.
Exactly what I am looking for... No retail in Belgium though...

Electricity
A while ago I wrote about the fact that we decided to have green energy in this new apartment.
So we choose CityPower instead of the traditional Electrabel (we have a free energy market in Belgium these days, not that it changes the prices so much...)
Anyhow, CityPower didn't do so well, it seems, as they become Nuon or rather Luminus, who is changing the name to ESPE or something like that (free markets you know...)
We were stunned to see our goodbye bill: 3 months for the price of 600 euro!
600 euro... You have to know, we didn't put our heating until December this year (global warming you know.) And it is not like we are cooking a lot in this apartment. So the only thing that consumes electricity is our washing machine, and the shower. And, OK, our portables.
But 600 euro for that?
So I called them, asking to check everything.
Apparently they made a mistake in noting down our counter ID: we are paying someone else's bill... Can you imagine?

MacWorld thoughts
Ok, my longings for MacWorld (Actually it is funny, but I look more forward to MacWorld than to Christmas.)
One of my clients has paid, and although I want to save for that fabulous trip, I am certainly setting something aside for the new releases.
Actually I have all I need
And these days I am saving for furniture and wall coverings (see former posts)
So the main thing I am longing for on this MacWorld is not so much the iTV (though it would be nice when the desk finally arrives to have the Mac Mini back for working instead as TV)
but an update of FrontRow with a Wii-alike UI and that great remote!! I mean, face it, that stupid small remote of Apple is nice but doesn't work to well. It should point and allow you to click and drag.
And looking for an artist in your iTunes takes ages.
(If they don't release such a thing, I am buying a wii-remote and connect it using DarwiinRemote )
Next to that I want a 12 inch again.
Nothing as useful as a tiny pbook.
And a good tv-screen. My 23 inch rocks in my living room, but I want it back as computerscreen. And I want a 30something that hasn't the price of Apple's 30inch... and can be connected to the MacMini (goes only up til 23inch)
Do I want an iPod with bigger videoscreen? Nope, I won't watch it anyway.
Do I want the iPhone? I am not sure if this so hyped phone will meet our expectations. I have a good running n80 and I love it. It allows me to keep my agenda updated and next to that I can check my emails if i need to (while I rather don't do so)
It should do a lot.
In my wildest dreams there would be a wireless ipod that is the combination of the ipod, wii-remote and sonos.
That would make sense: take the ipod around, with your ear buds, arrive home, dock it to synchro, take it as remote and select your music, choose the source whereto (one of your airports) and hear it in your living room, or your bathroom, or wherever.
A movie? Stream it to your television, and use the ipod as remote to change the volume, or to advance in the movie etc. (the iTV would be the intermediate for the connections)
Strange thought? Don't think so. Apple has all the needed connections. The already existing hardware and software (Airport -needs an update though-, iTunes+Store, announced iTV.)
The problem: keeping things compact.
Although Apple has released a lot of new products (intel series and new ipods etc) the are no real 'hot things' since long. So such a thing would make sense, since it doesn't exist, isn't taking any existing (which Apple generally refuses to do)
If there iTv is only what they presented in September, there will be a lot of disappointment, since EyeTV offers practically the same.
Key features are UI, remote, and things moving into the living room.
Internet is moving 2 directions: on your phone and in your livingroom. And those are the 2 places they want to go.

These Days is looking for Flash gods. Checkout the ad a little longer to see the flashing boobs :).
I think the joke in the ad represents the company pretty well: Always in for a joke.

So better check it out, when you are that flash God(ess).

iLife
The only leak for Macworld, is the release of iLife 07. Something we all expected, since Apple releases an update each year.
In the beginning, I wasn't such a huge fan of iLife: iPhoto sucked big time, because of double saving the files, and it wasn't too professional. iMovie was very simple, but I wasn't a moviemaker, and on top of that the themes present were kind of childish. iWeb is another stupid thing: no webstandards, just blinking beautiful templates.
But as I kept on buying Apple computers, I ended up with the latest versions of iLife, and in certain circumstances iLife turned out to be a nice extra: burning a dvd for a client, easy and fast, or as a fast tool to sharpen up some images. And I noticed the tools got better, more professional. Garageband is capable of integrating movies for podcasts, and iMovie turned out to be an easy way to make stop-motion with pictures, while you can control each element.
Sometimes it crashes (and thus I recommend to save inbetween steps) but I can't imagine another program and tend to understand within 3 hours, and make stunning results.
And as video turns out to be pretty common these days, I recommend iMovie: with its transitions, subtitles, image and sound import, you can make that little movie you filmed to be a great home movie.
Today I wonder what Apple will have added to their iLife 07. Hopefully some bug fixes.
But really, I try to see other useful features, without complicating the UI. iMovie already has HD, Garageband pod/vodcasting, and iWeb blogging, iPhoto has RAWsupport, and iDVD imports all stuff above.
So help me out. What can be added except for more themes?
(Webstandards... please give us webstandards :) The ability to add custom CSS :) )

Wild Charge Hands-On: Really Does Charge Wirelessly
We've heard tell of the Wild Charge system that replenishes power in cellphones, PSPs, notebooks and iPods, and now we can confirm: It really works.
We played with the system for a while tonight, putting the special cases on cellphones and attachments on iPods, and then suddenly those devices begin charging as soon as you place them on the metallic strip.
How the heck does this thing work?
It uses non-inductive technology to pass the current from strip to device without all that falderal you usually have to go through to charge it.
The company says we'll be seeing the first charging strips for sale in March, and the larger laptop-sized charger will be shipping in June.
50$, that's damn cheap for a universal recharger...

No more lurking! It’s De-Lurking time again :)
I know that you are there so don't try to deny it. I've seen you hiding all this time but no more :) It's De-Lurking time again, that time of the year to leave that safe place and come say hi to all of us.
What exactly is De-Lurking?
The term is used for people that read blogs or join chat rooms or newsgroups and don't participate in commenting. The readers that just look around because they don't have anything to add to the discussion or because it's already been said. Does this sounds like someone you know? It's something that got orginally started by Sheryl from Papernapkin.
You can do it...
Just leave that comment, tell me who you are :)
To say it in Veerle's words:
So don't be shy and hit that keyboard NOW!

Keep your ads for yourself...
A few weeks ago, a newtvchannel.be was looking for employees.
Today you can see what they will be presenting in our nearest future: yoBuz: Shopping channels in during your lunch break.
I am pretty happy I don't have a regular office with a mess.
I cannot imagine being bothered with ads during lunch.
When I was a kid there was one golden rule: no tele during breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Things have changed a lot, and I do eat while watching tv, or vice versa, but only when alone, or when having 'magic french fries friday'.
It is like people being on the cellphone all the time while being with friends. It just makes us more impersonal than we already were.
The mess should be the place where people talk during lunch, about kids, life, movies.
yoBuz is like saying: ads on tele don't work anymore, let's trick you people and put a tv during your lunch, that only shows ads.
I don't like at all...
And I cannot imagine this 'pushing to see ads' without being able to choose/rewind/fastforward will become a success.

iMovie adepts in the neighbourhood?
Any one of you is good with iMovie?
I have a little tiny (HUUUGE) problem:
when importing color images in iMovie, in order to make a slideshow (Burms effect) and exporting the result I get pixelated images. Really pixelated. I tried everything by now (even praying to G*d), but no answer is coming.
Anyone of you ever had this problem?
(Oh, google didn't come up with a good solution either)
Tried: removing the Ken Burms effect, using smaller jpg's, adjusting the images in Aperture in order to change something. Result: in BW pictures I don't have this problem.. But I need the color...

Apple iPhone: WTF?
I take back me saying I don't want the iPhone.
I DO WANT IT.
So damn beautiful...
And what a UI!!
iPhone combines three products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone.
But:
This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.
Snif...
Checking the features:
-wifi + bluetooth
-quad band
Now tell me whatever you want, but this IS the device I was talking about last time I mentioned what I was longing for: an ipod as a remote to send music to my stereo.
Since it runs Mac OS X native, it means that it will not take ages to have sallingclicker working this device, making it a remote for your computer.
And since it has wifi, it can (hopefully) stream music through airport express.
Telling you Apple is better than Santa Claus!
Remark: Apple teamed up with google and yahoo.
Believe it or not...

Pictures and music with iLife
As I am busy with turning pictures together with an interview into a little movie, I'll describe what I did. (Mostly as a reminder to myself... :) )
At first I thought to do everything with iMovie, but I seem to have some problems with the resolution, and since my client gave the info on the very last moment, I don't have time to look things up.
If you are interested in making a little movie with pictures, I recommend these 'how to's': adding images in imovie, animated slideshow.
Know that adding sound in iMovie works perfect, but for perfect control, you'll need Garageband. I had problems with pixelation when using color images, no problem when inserting black and white. This probably has to do with resolution, and a pro-editor told me you need after effects to be without any problems.
Now since this is only a small project and little time, I am not getting into AfterEffects...
An easier way to integrate pictures into a slideshow, when not needing any titles or subtitles is iPhoto: make an album and export it as a movie in the format/size you want. (probably an .mov file)
Unmark the 'add selected music' since it will only add music from iTunes and no edited track.
Then open Garageband, choose 'new movie score'.
Drag your movie into the timeline.
Ad the music you want and start adjusting it, by adjusting the levels and so on (don't hesitate to try, and to open help for some 'help' on the matter)
The cool thing about Garageband is that they made it into a podcasting tool thus allowing you to record straight from your microphone. You can actually mix your own voice into your movie, and adjust it the way you want.
You can also add beats and make your own mix. But I leave this up to the profesionals...
When finished, you need to export your final result.
Choose share. You'll see 'podcast to' which result in a small webmovie, but we want the original export. So choose 'export movie to disk'.
Now it will choose a standard exportformat, you'll need to change this setting.
Go to Garageband preferences, export, and choose your export settings (You probably want 'Full quality')
Go back to 'export movie to disk', save it, and there you have, a slideshow, as a .mov, with music :)
Send it around.

Bush declares war on Iran and Syria??
Succeeding in Iraq also requires defending its territorial integrity and stabilizing the region in the face of extremist challenges. This begins with addressing Iran and Syria. These two regimes are allowing terrorists and insurgents to use their territory to move in and out of Iraq. Iran is providing material support for attacks on American troops. We will disrupt the attacks on our forces. We’ll interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria. And we will seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq.

Why Ghent...
...someone asked.
Why this tiny little town in Belgium when there is a world full of exciting places to explore.
Because when I walk in the streets, and I watch the people, when I go shopping and the woman at the counter answers me with a Spanish accent, the Turkish people in the tram smile at me, when I see the old men speaking with an explicit Ghentish dialect, when I feel the towers surrounding me, and the history whispering in my ears, I feel happy, and most all, I feel home.

At the job
I am busy with recording some vodcasts these days and somehow in this job you do learn a lot of interesting stuff such as:
-Johnson&Johnson is testing a patch-painkiller you have to push when you start feeling the pain. Only then the patch starts to spread the painkiller.
-They also developed a kind of drug that is 'smart', it releases the medicine on different time spots, thus enabling a 'one-time injection' being enough to provide your body with medicines for the whole month.
-IMEC is working on nano-technology, developed a series of informative movies on how nano-technology is inserted in our lives.
Really interesting, but only available in their off line exhibit room (though I am trying to convince them to put them online...)
How did those huge computers became so small? How did a radio ended up an iPodNano?
Really interesting stories. I do love my job.

Sony's VAIO VGX-TP1DT media PC stack: streams and records HDTV over your home network
You know by now I am an Apple addict, and as long as I find no better system, I won't change.
Though...
When seeing this living room PC lineup I started to doubt: VAIO "Television Side PC" and digital tuner stack.
(Collectively known as the VGX-TP1DT, it consists VGX-TP1 PC and a new VGX-DT1 (bottom cylinder) digital tuner. The TP1 PC loads Vista Home Premium and packs a 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB (up to 2GB max) memory, 160GB (up to 500GB) disk, super multi-drive DVD, and terrestrial tuner at its core with HDMI, analog RGB and optical digital outputs, 4x USB and 1x Firewire, memory stick and SD slot, 802.11b/g WiFi, and wireless keyboard. The DT1 digital tuner features the ability to stream hi-def, broadcast television over Ethernet or WiFi for viewing or recording on the TP1 or any up-to-spec PC on your home network. 1080i video is recorded at either 1920x1080 pixels / 24Mbps or 1440x1080 pixels / 10Mbps for half the storage requirements. )
Sounds better than the MacMini.
At a pricing of $1,661 it doesn't though...
But it really looks ok ;)

B&O
I bought myself a B&O yesterday, and connected it to my iTunes.
I have to admit: I am hearing stuff I never heard before. As if I have a total new music collection...
The set, a 1900-2 is my sister's age. And it is as stunning today as 27 years ago...
It was designed by Jacob Jensen and is part of the permanent MOMA design collection, since the beginning of the eighties.
I totally freak out on the special push buttons... :)
For the tech freaks: The tuner is connected to 2 second hand Bose 201 (version IV) speakers I found on the web.
When buying B&O, be aware you'll need special speaker connections, you can order online at Conrad.be (738328 - 89) and the tape-output is 5-pin din, going into mini-jack to connect to my airport/itunes. (It even allows me to stream my music wireless to the speakers, which is actually pretty cool.)
Here in Ghent, the B&O shop helped me out really nicely, and fast. And I now have the new collection magazine allowing me to drool on, while thinking 'I'll buy this when I am a real grown-up' (or rather: when I can afford a 15.000 euro set up...)
(Btw, the set up above was a lot cheaper ;) )
Ha! I did a bargain :) I didn't pay 180 euro...

Why I like some stuff better than other.
Last night I was wondering why I like some stuff better than other.
Why did I get touched by that 20 years old B&O more than a recent hifi set? Why do I prefer Apple above PC? Why am I stunned by the iPhone?
It is more than only the design. It is even more than the usability. Or the combination of those.
And then I figured it out: 'I totally freak out on the special push buttons... ' I wrote yesterday.
Both Apple and B&O oblige us to touch their peripherals in a soft and tender way.
You gently put your finger on the touch sensitive button.
You gently move over the mouse pad.
They make us touch a cold and material utensil the way we touch someone we love. Tenderly.
They turn an 'it' into a 'she'.
I truly believe that's their strength.
I totally lost it when I saw how the iPhone obliges you to activate it:
by gently touching it from one side to the other. Slowly... And then taking the finger back.
Compare it to what you want, but actually I think it is pretty sexy...
The whole UI continues in the same manner: scrolling through your phonebook or your iTunes collection is done by striking the screen.
And in the end, disconnect your finger from the touch screen.
This striking or touching (with gentle and subtile moves) returns in all their products: from the touch pad, to the light buttons of your Apple screen. The way the buttons feel, til the way your mac mini eats your cd's. Slowly. Even the little scroll ball of the mighty mouse has it, because it is so small.
Each B&O has the same story: touch sensitive buttons, sliding windows, soft touches.
I think that's the part other manufacturers can learn something from:
make your device as personal as you can, actually try to turn it into a person. And let your users connect through their senses...

Het Volk
I live in this amazing great building (the best thing I did in 2006 was moving into this new apartment -the second best thing was buying another one-)
Het Volk used to host the presses of the Flemish newspaper, was dismantled and a living complex got here instead. Resulting in 145 new apartments, with loads of light.
Today there was a 'new years drink' for the inhabitants. Apparently there will be some activities in 2007, starting with a cello concert in the underground car park in March, and continued in May with a party for the neighbors (and a projection of a porn movie from the 20's :) )
We'll keep you up to date, because you are welcome too :)

Minority Report Touch Interface for Real
Jeff Han, a research scientist at NYU's Courant Institute, has come up with an future UI interface , which responds not only to touch and gestures, but to varying degrees of pressure. He flips photos across the screen, zooms in, throws them away, and calls up new ones, among a variety of other cool uses of the interface. It looks startlingly responsive and natural, far more so than a standard PC setup. It's hard to describe here how intense and possibly revolutionary the setup is, so you really need to check out the video and article for yourself.
The future is today... And I truly believe touch screens will become more important, resulting in revolutionary UI.
You already see it in the iPhone, but also the Wii is already showing that UI is changing a lot from a kind of static disconnected tool the mouse used to be.
Move your mouse on the table to have your mouse pointer move on your screen, towards point to the screen with the mouse until 'you are the mouse'

The search for pants
I am in search for a pair of cool pants. It is full horror. Found myself something I really think is cool: Gypsy and Loïc.
Withdraw: men's wear, and only in San Francisco...
So I continue my search...
Gypsy and Loïc, a fashion design duo based near San Francisco, produces an appealing line of casual menswear made from equally-appealing materials. Their clothing is full of original details that set them apart without overwhelming their designs. The company also gets high marks for their sustainability efforts. About 50% of the line is organic cotton, hemp and bamboo. Their dyes are non synthetic and environmentally safe, and all of the clothes are manufactured in the US and/or fair trade factories.

News to us. Perusing various sites yesterday for new spring merchandise, we stumbled across framed photographic prints at West Elm. All of the prints are limited reproductions of artwork by Savannah College of Art and Design students. Through a partnership, the school and West Elm offer a series of affordable and original artwork by emerging artists. It's great to see a big-box store support student artists...

Sharpness of a lens
Since quite a few days I was wondering if my sigma was still as sharp as before.
I still have the feeling when photographing digital, there is so much more to take care for, than taking analogue pictures.
Anyhow, I did a little test.
Imported it in the amazing Aperture.
And the verdict is simple: my Sigma 18-50, F 2.8 is blazing sharp.
No regrets for buying that lens whatsoever.

Let there be light
I guess the Swarovzki's inside the light make it so expensive (3.950 $)
The supernova is beautiful though...
"The Murano glass diffusers of Barber Osgerby’s “Supernova” test the ability of even the best glass-blowers; it is very difficult to produce a hand-blown piece of glass in this diameter with uniform color and thickness.
Each module is filled with clear Swarovski crystals to form a refracting layer. With a light source inserted above the layer of crystals, the chandelier produces soft up-light through the glass and refracted down-light through the convex crystal base."
Another one for 'when I am a grown up' or 'when I get rich'...lol

iPhone, really a miracle?
I admit, when having the first look at the iPhone, I was fond of it. I loved it. I still do.
The iPhone sells me dreams: it makes me long for the most beautiful mobile out there, featuring new ways to navigate communication.
But then there is the drawback...
The same drawback when figuring out how to make a Media Center out of the Mac Mini: the set up is working *almost* perfect over here.
Almost that is like: it isn't without some disadvantages.
I wonder about the disadvantages of the iPhone.
The first disadvantage I saw, when visiting the site was this sentence:
'This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.'
All we saw, was a dream.
-Running Mac Os x: yeah right... As if you could run all programs on this little device. It is a reduced version of Mac Os X...
-Widgets: nice, but only Apple produces widgets. So what about my Salling Clicker?? And the rest I certainly would love to have...
-Break through internet device? The UI is revolution, but not the features. My Nokia n80 can do it all. And it even has a similar browser.
-Touch screen: I am not so convinced. I mean it really really has to work really good. Otherwise touch screens are annoying.
-Bluetooth: Rumor is the iPhone doesn't sync using bluetooth... Now c'mon, I'll hope they fix it...
En plus, the iPhone does *NOT* have:
-iChat
-RSS reader
-a blogclient
-Word (not that i used it before)
-Skype
The funny thing is: my Nokia N80 features all above (except for Skype). And pretty well.
I don't love the UI much, and I admit having installed a skin that makes it look like Mac Os X, to make it easier for me to work with (which it really does. I think Nokia should look into their UI, and their icons to make things more clear)
In fact, actually my Nokia features all the stuff I like: I sync using bluetooth, I have a Salling Clicker remote, a blogclient -I rarely use-, and a MSN chat (but no video chat, otherwise it would be used all the time).
It has an MP3 player with a removable SD card (which I like better than the fixed format of the iPhone)
It has wireless internet, which rocks.
And it even has widsets! Plus tons of software you can install.
(I am still waiting for the Skype release for Symbian.)
I admit, the phone I have is the best one I had until now (and I did have a few already...)
So why would I still buy the iPhone?
Because of the UI. Only because of the UI.
The MP3 player on the Nokia isn't easy to work with. It cannot sync my iTunes. I didn't figure out how to change the front panel until someone showed it to me. And somehow I always manage to get a 'are you really willing to delete this person'-warning while I never intended to.
Nokia, use your advantage and grab you chances: look into your UI.
Because I will hesitate to buy a 800 euro device, if I have one that does what it needs to do, and it does it good.
But it can do better.
(With the release of the N95, featuring a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss..., a GPS!, a video with DV quality. Wifi and even USB 2.0, at the same size of my n80, I have to admit it feels like they have a worthy competitor to the iPhone. Especially when seeing the price tag...)

Power of the net
I don't know if other blogs reported this, but it is kind of funny to read the power of the net.
Back in 1991 (long time ago) a Belgian popular children''s duo, existing out of a man and a dog, sang 'If you had 10 million, I would buy gallons of lemonade and 100 kilo of chocolate. I would hold a big party'
Years later, the duo is rich due to their popularity, and very good marketing, they owe several attraction parks in the country, and have several (television)shows.
So some students thought about the song, they set up a website, asking 'what about the party you promised?'.
It got quite some attention and as a result Gert gave in: a party for 1000 people in one of the attraction parks, with free chocolate and lemonade.
Great story!

Falling
This is funny. The picture above is floating on my desktop for a month now.
I wanted to write something about it, but I didn't remember the name of the artists, and somehow, I didn't find them while googling...
So it is a nice surprise when today I see Jeroen posted about them.
Jep, this is an installation at the Biennale of Venice, few years back.
Apparently the work is from Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger , and I am really ashamed having forgotten their names, especially since I got a lecture of them in Tel Aviv, and we went to drink coffee together. (Sorry guys...)
They are really great and the 'why' of the work is really nice to check, knowing that most of their pieces
I saw this in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Roommate
It was fun as long as it lasted: one of the roommates is leaving due to family reasons (no, not because of us :) )
So we are looking for another roommate (hey, that's a real opportunity for you, since we are great and so is the apartment):
The perfect person is 25-35 years old, open-minded, design-minded and has a job to attend. Is a non smoker and has no animals to bring along.
(And by preference not too many furniture either since, well, space is limited and we like to keep it 'postmodern' ;) )
Since we are really difficult, the perfect person is a girl. (Wasn't perfect something to achieve? :) )
We have a great apartment in the center of Ghent, with huge windows and a nice park swimming pool these days view in the back.
Available from February onwards. We'll be 3: Bjorn, a 29 year old almost doctor in politics, me, Ine, a 29 year old independent photographer/webdesigner who works at home (most of the time, if not traveling). (nope we are not a couple).
And maybe you?

If you are looking for a good bargain, then go to Obius on Monday or Tuesday: -70%
Last time I walked in, I saw this amazing jacket, I really really liked.
That is, until I noticed the price label: 1500 euro.
For a jacket!
I mean, I wouldn't dare to walk in the rain with such an expensive coat...
Anyhooooo, on Monday the same coat would cost you 450 euro.
(Still not really to walk the rain with, but hey, it is almost Spring ;) )

Words
In the framework of 'Day of the Poem' in Belgium today:
Words
by Anne Sexton
Be careful of words,
even the miraculous ones.
For the miraculous ones we do our best,
sometimes they swarm like insects
and leave not a sting but a kiss.
They can be good as fingers.
They can be trusty as the rock
you stick your bottom on.
But they can be both daisies and bruises.
Yet I am in love with words.
They are doves falling out of the ceiling.
They are six holy oranges sitting in my lap.
They are the trees, the legs of summer,
and the sun, its passionate face.
Yet often they fail me.
I have so much I want to say,
so many stories, images, proverbs, etc.
But the words aren't good enough,
the wrong ones kiss me.
Sometimes I fly like an eagle
but with the wings of a wren.
But I try to take care
and be gentle to them.
Words and eggs must be handled with care.
Once broken they are impossible
things to repair.
Tx Sarah, for pointing out this fabulous site

Crusade in Jeans
Wednesday I took my sweetest babysit and Sarah to 'Crusade in Jeans'.
It was the babysit who had chosen the movie and we had to follow.
(I did read the book as a youngster)
I didn't have many expectations of a 'Flemish' movie, but it turned out to be an international production and already in the futuristic openingscene, I had to admit: this could be a good movie.
As I expected Mik, Mac & Mon futuristic (read fake and stupid) costumes, I was surprised to read Kaat Tilley did the clothing.
The photography is amazing, the music dramatic, and the result can be laid next to Harry Potter or Lord of the Ring in every way.
But pretty scary for kids. Be aware of that when you take them.
The good news: this movie is supposed to be a trilogy. All of us seemed very happy about that :)
View the trailer.

Cat flushes
Someone needs to explain this to me:
How can a cat flush the toilet.
I mean you see the cat actually *understands* that he has to flush to get the water running.
So I wonder, is this something a cat is supposed to do? Put a link between one object and another.
Pavlov's reflex is there due to indoctrination. But no way this is Pavlov.
All explanations are welcome...

Honesty touches...
Donald Crowdis, the 93-year-old blogger of Don to Earth, has a brave and bittersweet entry about not wanting to die:
I've floated on the remark "Been there, done that" for some time now, but the notion that the moment is approaching when I can no longer say this bothers me. The truth is, I don't want to go.
There are many reasons. For too long I have behaved as if I could postpone going indefinitely, and thus have so many things that I must do first. I don't want my successors to find out how much I could have done that isn't done, not by a long shot. There are numerous notes and letters I must write. There are places I've wanted to travel, but never had the chance. Actually, each of you can, if you think yourself into my age, fill out the list. At least you can try to understand why I say that I hate to go.
Makes you think about life...

1 minute of silence for the victims of holocaust
Today we remember the victims of the holocaust.
It is a sentence in the news, a short item. We know it because we read it.
Afterwards.
In Israel, this remembrance is more present: at a certain moment of the day, all sirens start to sound. People stop walking. All cars stop. Everyone gets quiet. The world stops turning for one minute.
The first time it happened when I was there, I wasn't aware of the what or the how, and it was really really strange.
As if all freezes, a moment out of a science fiction movie where one pushes the button and you are the only one left moving.
And then I thought it is the most respectful thing we can do: stop the world for a minute and remember.

Superstars and beautiful teeth
I always wonder if I see American/Famous Superstars if their teeth are real or not.
I mean, we know they all get white teeth through bleaching.
But did they all get born with a fabulous beautiful row of teeth or not?
Did they wear braces during childhood? Or do they got fake teeth, just as we see it on all these entertaining programs ' Change your mom into a supermodel'. Women get in with an awful face and get out after 3 days with a white smile.
Hell I don't know, and I sure don't want to know whether the L Word babes wear dentures or not.

Bourgie
My parents and grand-parents used to say I didn't have the tendency to save money.
I guess they never saw how I really saved up every penny, and doubted each buy for months.
But once it was decided, I would definitely go for it.
Same story this month: since months and months I saw this fabulous Bourgie of Kartell.
I did put it on my longing list for Christmas, but nobody noticed it...
I checked them online, and didn't find them less than 180 euro.
So when during sales, I came across this store, and found myself having a 15% discount + a VAT thing, reducing the price to 120 euro, I was tempted. As in 'really really tempted'.
Yet, thinking of what my parents used to say 'You spender' I doubted once again.
I passed the store like 7 times.
Longing...
I even called my mom, telling the whole thing, and she advised me to buy it. Yet I couldn't. I found it an awful lot for a lamp.
3 days she called, wondering if I already bought it, and if I really wanted it, I could better buy it now instead of next month, when the discount was gone.
'And what about saving, mom'.
'What about it? You want it? Buy it.'
So I bought it.
And I was so happy buying it.
I didn't even mind to drag it around the whole city, looking like a stupid happy kiddo.
And you know what, I really love the fact I longed for it. It made the joy so much better...

Which car are you?
I'm a Lamborghini Murcielago!
You're not subtle, but you don't want to be. Fast, loud, and dramatic, you want people to notice you, and then get out of the way. In a world full of sheep, you're a raging bull.

You're all about winning the race and getting the job done. While you have a practical everyday side, you get wild when anyone pushes your pedal. You hate to lose, but you hardly ever do.
