Remote control your Airport Express with your mobile/PDA

Another one to remember...

Thanks to MW reader Travis Walls for pointing out that the Salling Clicker--a Bluetooth app that turns your mobile/pda into a remote control for your Mac--makes a wonderful remote for the Airport Express. Travis wrote:

I love the APX. I hear everyone complaining about the lack of a remote and I laugh as I search for a song on my iBook from my Nokia 3650. Apple won't usually do things if they know someone else already has a solution and they don't think they can do it better. Using Salling Clicker is like having iTunes on my phone.

I must admit I'd quite forgotten about the Salling Clicker when I hooked up my Airport Express and had quite overlooked that somewhere along the line (I used SC last with my T68i) Jonas Salling added a boat-load of new features including the ability to browse and search your iTunes music visually on your mobile.

Problem solved... within the limits of range.

Mac OS X 10.3.5 update

Mac OS 10.3.5 is just released and has a number of interesting items in it.
What do you think about the built-in Bluetooth Remote Control functionality.  Your mobile becomes your remote control for PowerPoint, KeyNote and iTunes. What about that!

Finally a good reason to buy a Bluetooth phone...

In coop with Salling Clicker.

iPod Cameras

KyoceraOver in Japan, Kyocera has teamed up with Apple to create 5 digital cameras in the iPod Mini colours. The 4-megapixel Finecam SL400R cameras are being sold on the Apple online store and come bundled with QT PRo and iTunes.

It seems that Apple's influence knows no bounds. Soon everything will be available in the 5 Mini colours - cars, washing machines, Gap jumpers - the possibilities are endless.

Apple to announce 4G iPod with color display, report confirms

Apple Computer is set to finally unveil its rumored high-end photo-savvy iPod.

[from AppleInsider]

Finally.....
This iPod with color screen, will support image viewing, and most of all 'connecting to a television screen' to give slideshows.

So I will wait 2 months longer to have a 60gb back up, mp3 player and media-reader...

Apple will/won't

Itunesphone
Some more days to go and we'll know.

Apple will or will not release its iPhone -announced by Motorola-, Apple will/will not release its headless iMac, Apple will/will not release its Flash Based iPod, Apple will/will not release an update of AirTunes, Apple will/will not release...

Why is it so important to us, Apple users?
Because of its fancy design? Because of its easy use -sorry Sony Ericsson but while your design is splendid, usability is 4/10 on your products, 1 times in 2 I hit the wrong button, and then it takes me 10 clicks to get back to the original menu-
It's seamless connectivity?

Oh yes I agree, they make mistakes -take for example the one button mouse. Common guys, you invented the mouse, but MS did the right thing of adding the right mouse click...-

I guess the tension reaches heights because they are always 'before'...
You can bet on what they release or integrate will become standards.
Take for example WiFi, or FireWire...
When others still supported the serial ports, these were already standards in Mac.
Or take the revolution of the iPod, or the 12 inch portable -after everybody wanted bigger-
Or the Airtunes.

Every release shows a little bit of the future.
When (or rather if?) the headless iMac will be introduced, we indeed get the sign that we are getting even more in the future.
Where the media room will have a computer connected to your 'television', and 'radio'.
When the headless iMac gets introduced, I will doubt indeed.
For 500 euro I'll have an extra computer that can become my wireless backup -through my Airtunes-. That can be my savior in need. It will become the place that runs my music, and streams my video on big time screen -Airtunes + Apple Screen 30 inch-.
It will be my local spot, while all my other stuff is designed to be nomad.
And most of all, it will not be a huge ugly grey plastic case, no it will be a beauty that can stand next to your beautiful screen.

Yep, they have an idea, and yep, they state it.
Stubborn, but very future-wise.

iHome 3 iHome 5
Rumors are there to be fed...
But this is likely to be the headless iMac.
And as I forecasted, we are talking about a MediaCentre.
Yep, I am definitely waiting before buying my HD. First want to know how much GB are stored in this machine and if it can be enlarged.

More on Engadget.

Mac Mini / Lacie Ethernet Drive

Features Top072004

In the near past I said I would opt for a Lacie Ethernet Drive instead of a Mac Mini.
I believe I changed my idea last night, when suddenly *ping* an idea came to me.

Apple has a software tool 'Apple Remote Desktop' which allows you to take control over Macs on which you are administrator.
This amazing piece of software suddenly seems my solution:
It means I can erase most of the stuff on my Pbook and keep it stored the Mac Mini, while still be able to access it from the other side of the world.
All my pics would be stored there. (Don't need them all the time...)
A separate back up disk to ensure all the data, that simultaneous copies all the info with 'Deja Vu'

And meanwhile I can actually use my Mac Mini as a Media Center ;)

Why I don't have the Mini yet?
Well, they only started delivering yesterday...
And I want the amazing Tiger -with Spotlight-  included. So some more patience...

Skype In

Skype offers a new service: you can actually achieve a local phonenumber.
So people from an ordianry line can call you on a number. When they do, your Skype will start ringing.
Interesting for people abroad. -Imagine being called at my Skype on a local Belgian number, when I am elsewhere. People would always call local...-
It might be a good solution for Moko, who can get an Chinese number, while she, herself is sitting in Canada. Her parents can call local and pay local rates.
Or Ana can have an American number, while being in Brazil...

Skype wrote some days ago:

Does Skype for Mac OS X support SkypeIn?
Yes, the newly released Beta version (Version: 1.0.0.15) is fully compatible with both Skype Voicemail and SkypeIn. Please click here to download before purchasing a SkypeIn number.

So now, I can use the system as well.
Only waiting until they release a Belgian number...

Camera to iPod

This must be the solution for leaving my Pbook home when shooting pics.
Finally a cheap solution :)
Storing pics perfectly in a 60gb pod. Makes like 17142 pics...:)))
And I can reload 60 times the 1gig card.
Sound splendid to me.

What is it? The iPod Camera Connector

Soft for iPod

Pod2Go

Yep, it arrived. And how... What a beauty.

Macline, my favourite dealer did there best. Ordered in the morning, delivered in the afternoon. With the iTalk.

The iPhoto is worth the investment: the syncro for the pics is fabulous: point out a folder of images, and it will be transferred to the iPod. And if you want, your high res too. It means a small back up on the disk (60gb) Fabulous.

Installing all the little apps now.
Pod2Go is perfect. And MapQuest, well it works in Europe too.
Fabulous -pity though I cannot see a real map.-

You have more fabulous apps?
Please let me know.

Storing voice memo on your iPod

I have a tiny little problem: each time I synchro my iPod all the voice memo's I made disappear...
Does anybody know how to solve it?
I would love to keep those voice memo/interviews ON my HD.

All tips are welcome.

And, oh, glad they made a crack to the built in sound level limit for Europe.
Your European iPod on max level has almost NO sound. -Or I am already deaf off course...-

Update:
humhum. I found the solution... It is even better then I thought:

iTalk Support

How do I get my recordings into my computer?

When you connect your iPod to the computer and sync the iPod, your recordings will automatically be transferred to a Voice Memos playlist in iTunes.

Also, the Voice memos will be transferred back to the iPod, but they will appear in a Voice Memos playlist on the iPod (not under Extras > Voice Memo).

I just LOVE this convenience.

Question for Apple-freaks

Tiger is released, so one needs only one reason to run to the shop and buy that Mac Mini...

But my question is: when I want to connect wireless with my pbook to a harddisk, what is the best/fastest solution?
The MacMini with shared folder, or a HD in the ethernet network?

Don't bother about the space and price, I just want a very workable solution in which I don't have to connect my pbook to a firewire/usb disk.

(Yep, I still didn't figure it out...)

SpringCleanUp

Have been running my SpringCleanUp: erase your total computer and reinstall it.

Wow, the little beauty is running like a charm.
-Have to say I like to test all new software available, and installing all these apps make your computer run veryvery slow. A reinstall deletes all this junk left overs-

New system, new year, new habits.
It is like the promises you make at new year: 'I will always back up my stuff.' 'I will keep it organized'...

Well, these days, it is all running by itself. (Thank you You Software!)

A quick configuration for you Mac-users:

I run Panther -in wait of upgrade of Tiger...-
Main programs to advise:
-Skype (rocks! calling was never so cheap)
-Adium
-iChat -though never used it-
-Mail -use as little Micro$$oft as possible-
-Ecto for blogging (also for PC!)
-NetNewsWire for reading RSS
-Firefox /Safari (waiting for RSS version, seems to be much better and faster + less buggy than firefox)
-Calendar -keeps me organized, I tend to forget things-
-Itunes (rules...)
-PhotoShop CS
-Dreamweaver MX
-Transmit (ftp program)

And then the most useful apps:
-YouSoftware: Tunes (control your itunes in the menubar), Synchronize (to back up your stuff).
-Cocktail to maintain your system
-Pod2Go (for your iPod as back up and many more)
-Romeo (using your mobile ad remote for your computer/itunes)

That's it. (You should have seen how many apps I deleted... Actually almost never used them. So why bother)

A ethernet disk as back up and for storing all the iTunes Music to empty my personal HD.

Don't hesitate to send in more veryvery useful apps for Mac I you have some.

Did you know...?

...a mac(k)intosh is a raincoat?

From The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48:
mac \mac\ n.
Shortened form of mackintosh, a waterproof raincoat made of
rubberized fabric.
Syn: mackintosh,
macintosh, mac, mack.

And Fogg travelled around the world in 80 days with as luggage

'Only a carpetbag,' he had instructed his servant Passepartout, 'in it two woollen shirts and three pairs of stockings . . . my mackintosh and travelling cloak, also stout shoes, although we shall walk but little or not at all.'

Apple's all mighty mouse

The are doing it again: reinventing...

20050802 Mm

Apple introduces Mighty Mouse.

Meet the mouse that reinvented the wheel. The scroll wheel, that is. At $49, Mighty Mouse features the revolutionary Scroll Ball that lets you move anywhere inside a document, without lifting a finger. And with touch-sensitive technology concealed under the seamless top shell, you get the programability of a four-button mouse in a single-button design. Click, roll, squeeze and scroll. This mouse just aced the maze.

Too bad it is not wireless...
But heck, its features look good: you can click it, roll it, scroll it and squeeze it.
Will it peep?

Opensource for Mac

Do you know AbiWord?
Abiword is an alternative for M$ Word.
(Available for Windows too btw)
It was updated days ago to a newer version.

Another player in the field is NeoOffice

And most of all for Israeli Mac Lovers:
NeoOffice enables Hebrew writing!
Guess you like that! -M$ refused to make a Hebrew version of Word for Mac, even though the Israeli Mac Community offered to pay for it-

Best of all: all these programs are totally FREE.

Seriously thinking of switching here, now it is no longer needed to run those apps, there is finally a good alternative...

Skype releases Mac OSX API

It is a big day for the Mac Developer ecosystem. The Skype API is now available. It was announced on the Skype Forum a couple of hours ago here.

Jepjep, can't wait to see those developers getting into it. Jihaa!.
On my wish list:
iskoot
jyve alike
skype to sms
online indicator
skype integration in mac os Browsers and AdressBook
a dashboard widget

That and local numbers in Belgium/Israel would be nice...
And a wifi set that is actually just like a phone and not such a stupid headset that makes you look like you are from Mars.

DTV for Mac

Nice initiative, but I want to mention another program the same makers release: Broadcast Machine.

Broadcast Machine is software you install on your website to easily publish video files. It gives you the option of using torrent technology to reduce or eliminate bandwidth costs, even when you are posting high quality video to thousands of people. Broadcast Machine is free, open source software, and is designed for easy installation. It features an intuitive interface, integrated torrent creation, and flexible channel management. Broadcast Machine also creates a browsable archive of videos on your website. But the real purpose of the software is to be the perfect publishing tool for our video player that will be released in August-- Broadcast Machine creates channels that, when viewed in the player, give people a TV-like viewing experience.

I like the part: create bittorrents!
Yepyep we are getting there!

More:
Since Broadcast Machine is completely content neutral, it does the same for audio files. We haven’t gotten around to testing it with podcasting programs (let us know if you do), but it should be a pretty good way to podcast, especially if you want to use torrents to save bandwidth (again, if you have ideas about how we can make this work better for podcasting, let us know).

Skype and Apple AddressBook

Dialwskype

I asked for this feature a while ago...
And now it is there, nicely hidden: call with Skype in your address book.
And it works perfect.
Jihaa!!!

Update: the callto:// protocol works in Apple -it wasn't like that earlier-, a link in a browser (Safari, Mozilla, Firefox) is accepted and activates the Skype-application. And that's really good news.

Gizmo Project VoIP immediately follows GoogleTalk

SIPphone Inc. has released Gizmo Project 1.0, a new Voice over IP (VoIP) software app for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. They've also announced an agreement to provide Google Talk connectivity in future versions.

I think GoogleTalk is a big fuzz for nothing. _Oh jeah they support Jabber and SIP and it will be significant in the near future towards msn and yahoo stuff- but the strength lies in de SIP protocol. I guess the compatibility with other SIP-clients will mean a breakthrough.
Lik some of you mention: we live in 2005, we want only one accesspoint and not 25 messenger-systems.

Gizmo announced future compatibility. Way to go: I'll be able to call with my gizmo account to all gmail users. Platform crossoing and messenger crossing.
That's the future....
Instead of using the GoogleInterface, go for Adium of Gizmo, I'd say...

Can't compare apple to pears. Or can we?

Sony Powerbook

When we dare to think about it...
Apple didn't only manage to get a smooth running system the last 3 years, and release Tiger some months ago -while, we have to say, Microsoft is still trying to launch its last release.

No, next to that Apple is preparing to switch to Intel.
And there system is pretty ready.
According to some sources switching your pc to Mac OsX is peanuts, and many developers already said that changing their apps to work with PC was very easy.

You have to take your hat off for that.
They built a platform for Mac and a second one for PC. All at the same time. And they took us by surprise. Never really really late with their last builds, but even far ahead this new build...

So are they planning to take over the PC world?
Are they slowly slipping into your room, through your ipod, and your neighbors ipod. Slowly slowly convincing you about their convenience?
So if you can try their platform, you'll try it.
And maybe be convinced.

And then probably they'll sell more of those beautiful computers.

Me, I kind of don't support the idea. I think the less people using the system, the less viruses will develop. -I really love to have a virus free computer that doesn't give blue screens-
And heck, many Apple freaks will have to kick off of being not the only Apple Geek anymore...

Time to buy Apple Shares... ;)

Apple 'big' press release?

Ipodnanohand20050907
Well, what a bummer...

No wonder the shares dropped...

Heck, the iPod Nano is a beauty -but I have an iPod Photo 60gb so I am not teased by the Nano-

The Rokr sucks: no synchro with iCal or Mail. A little videocam and no word-worthy camera. 100 songs inside of my mobile? Nice but doesn't convince me.
Wifi would have convinced me. (Bluetooth always convinces me, especially with Apple)

My perfect phone:
-Wifi -with Skype-
-Bluetooth -for stereo headset that can be used on my comp-
-Nice integration of iCal, Mail, and AddressBook (last thing works with bluetooth enabled mobiles)
-A cam that can be used as web cam
-A photocam that has min. 4milj pixels. (Or no photocam at all...)
-Oh and maybe, maybe 100 songs, if you insist.

The iTunes 5 version, is according to me, a reason to settle with the microsoft patent fight. It has some nice features which I'll never use. ;)

But tell me, what would be your perfect mobile?

Apple Silence

Tomorrow is the big event, but no new rumors are coming in.
The only guess people have is the videoiPod, which Jobs always denied, a Madonna labeled iPod, and updates of the existing g5 series.

Nobody knows?

Why would Jobs released a campaign based upon a sentence like 'One More Thing' which he always uses when something big is going to be announced?
Would they set up an event ONLY for a Madonna iPod?

Can't believe: after the disappointment of the Rokr, the scratched Nano, and the Paris Expo which didn't reveal anything new, Jobs cannot announce a Madonna iPod.
It has to be something else.
Right?

Apple Announces iTunes 6 With 2,000 Music Videos, Pixar Short Films & Hit TV Shows

I don't care about the Apple Video Pod... I really don't, but this...:

SAN JOSE, California—October 12, 2005—Apple® today announced iTunes® 6, the next generation of the world’s most popular music jukebox and online music store. iTunes 6 lets fans purchase and download over 2,000 music videos and six short films from Academy-Award winning Pixar Animation Studios for just $1.99 each. Also, in a landmark deal with Disney, iTunes is now offering current and past episodes from two of the most popular shows on television, “Desperate Housewives” and “Lost,” as well as the new drama series “Night Stalker” and the two most popular shows from Disney Channel, “That’s So Raven” and “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” for just $1.99 per episode. Customers can now purchase and download their favorite television shows from iTunes the day after they air on TV, watch them on their Mac® or PC, and Auto-Sync them onto the new iPod® for viewing anywhere.

“We’re doing for video what we’ve done for music—we’re making it easy and affordable to purchase and download, play on your computer, and take with you on your iPod,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Right out of the gate we’re offering 2,000 music videos, Pixar’s short films and hit primetime TV shows like ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Lost’.”

This hits.
Peter, I forecasted it. I really did.
The video store is there, they needed to take the market before someone else did it.
Official downloads of Lost... I gladly pay the 2 dollars.

Yesterday I was talking about it with Britt.
She said: they can't offer something cheaper than 75 euro.
Well dear, they do: 2 dollar/episode of Lost! (what, 12 episodes = 24 green papers?) I am certainly buying official now.

Not only do they sell TV shows, no, they released the wonderful remote, read: Front Row, the Media Center of Apple.... only included in iMac- and thus limited to 20 inch-
I want....

Frontrowtop20051011

(I am sure D7tC will watch her L Word episodes on her iPod. I won't.
So I'll stick to my nice little machine.
-Though while watching... It's appealing...Damn, why can't they disappoint so you are not teased to buy...- I can imagine: go babysitting and taking your movie collection along..-

Watch the keynote of Steve Jobs now. Enjoy it like I did.
-I experience an overload on the Mac site now...-

Request: Skype for Mac

Plazes
An Skype API for Mac was released a month ago. Funny enough nothing has been done since then.

Am I mistaken, or are only few doing something with it?

I would love to have a Skype solution for Mac that gets rid of the huge window and gets Skype in my menubar, like Plazes does.
That way, I can see who's online anytime, and initiate/close calls in the without the hassle of finding my window back.

Choosing between 12 inch or 15

It is a funny remark for today, but yesterday I had to work on a 15inch pBook, and I just hated it...
I turned back to my little cosy 12inch, with a way too small screen, but a nice keybord.

(I am writing this for the day I need to buy a new one, to remind me to take a 12inch with an external screen and not be tempted by a larger format..)

TiVo to iPod-friendly video while you sleep

TiVo to iPod-friendly video while you sleep:

tvharmony.jpgThe new version of Autopilot software just released by TVHarmony.com promises to convert TiVo recorded shows to iPod video-compatible format. The software automatically transfers, converts, and stores shows recorded by TiVo. The best part is that you can program the entire process to happen while you're sleeping, so your favorite programs are ready for your iPod bright and early the next morning.

Does this really mean people will watch video on their video pod?

Free B-Movies for IPod

For iPod Video owners:

More than 500 public-domain flicks -- including classics like Night of the Living Dead -- are just a click away. Plus: Video art lights up iPods.

This is only one of the ways iPodMovie will be used.

I think marketeers can not underestimate the power of making advertising/little movies available as iPodMovies...
Nobody started yet, who'll be the first to offer their movies as an iPod download?

Advertising on Demand...

I see the potential (most of all because it is NOT limited to iPod, or even iTunes.)

Aperture: missed shot?

This morning I attended the lecture on Aperture.
I was frankly speaking stunned.
But I knew that the PowerMacs running there will never be mine (G5 Quads... It is like 8G4's inside. Translated into normal language: it took 3! seconds to process 6 RAW files of 20Mb each into a PDF...)

Anyhoo... The software was intriguing because of the visual way it is working: it is all copied from the old manual way and feels familiar because of that.
Keywords as drag and drop, workflows with floating utensils and a beautiful magnifier which frankly speaking I miss very much in other apps now.

But it surely misses some key features when going deeper into it.
I mean, the idea is perfect, the technical workout probably could have been better.
Forget about running the soft on a portable G4...
And more stuff to think about in this review: read here

iTunes/iPod Movie Content in Europe?

Giftcard Music

Whenever we wonder why there aren't any Lost-episodes available on the European iTunes-store, the answer is here:

Europe sucks in maintaining unified laws on the matter.

I was talking to the Apple Europe guys last week and they told me: to get the license we need to have more than 30! approvements in 18 countries.

We certainly can wait a little bit longer, taking Sabam matters and opposition into account.
I guess Kafka could come in handy here ;)

I will try a trick next month: buy gift certificates in Soho Apple Store, then buy online in the US iTunes, and hope I the longed-for episodes.
If it works I am buying loads of gift certificates to bring to Europe...
(You think they'll offer L-word Season 3 on iTunes?? :)) )

Belkin representatives hinted that they are close to unveiling a microphone attachment for 5G iPods that take advatage of that iPod’s higher recording resolution. The adapter will include both a built-in microphone and a microphone port for connecting an external mic.

Finally!!!

I guess I'll wait a little longer and buy that iPod Video for professional reasons ;)

Finally: Record 16-bit digital audio with your iPod

Record 16-bit digital audio with your iPod:

Here's a great podcasting tool. The MicroMemo by XtremeMac is a mic that plugs into your iPod's dock connector port and produces 22 KHz/16-bit, high quality recordings. The mic is on a flexible neck for easy positioning, and there's a built in speaker for instant playback (no need to put on the headphones). The MicroMemo is powered by the iPod (we're not sure how much of a strain that's going to put on the iPod's battery) and the mic can be detached. Plus it just looks cool.

XtremeMac is currently taking pre-orders at $79.95US.

iTunes U, Coming Soon

itunesu.jpg
Listen up, you studious students. iTunes will be releasing a new service to help further your studying, and by studying, I mean skipping class and not worrying about it. iTunes U will be teaming up with universities and other education establishments to offer a free hosting service for educators. With this service instructors can upload videotaped or audio recorded lectures to iTunes and students can download them to their iPods or watch it at their computers. Hooray for not going to class and making it up later!

Bought a Rony-mobile

Cws31Afw 13052High 1022 0 4000
Yep, it happened to me again... I lost my mobile.

Must be number 10 or so...

After a profound design survey (with her) and the practical side (I want only mobiles with Bluetooth and Mac-compatibility.) I bought the z520i.
(The fact that it closes makes sure I cannot make phone calls without knowing. ILI)

Cws31Afw 13119High 1022 0 4000
Now, when arriving home, I discovered that in fact it is a Rony-mobile...

It has lights all over, and when some one calls me, it seems like a juke-box going off...
Wallah!

Took me a while before finding the solution to that problem (and dimming the lights).
By now, it turned into a nice normal phone, and I like it.

Tip for the Apple-users: the z520i does synchronize with iSync in Panther, but you need to set up the bluetooth from the phone and not through the Apple Bluetooth set up. (This will save you needless annoyance.)

iPod Video?

"In view of Apple’s increasingly cozy relationship with Disney, we would not be surprised to see ESPN’s Sport Center show up at the store in the near future," the analyst wrote. "In our opinion, the rapid increase in the iTMS’s video offerings is a strong signal that an iPod with a much larger screen is on the way."

Mjammie...
U might wait a little bit longer before buying that iPod Video...

Peter and I were already talking about it yesterday, while in the car:
The way we will perceive media will be very very different in the near future, and it seems Apple will take an important lead.
The rise of sales of DVD proves already that most people want to watch video on demand, on top of that, one has to admit: what does tele offer these days?
Series on animals. how to dress, how to change your house, how to raise your children and how to dance I, II and III...
We want different things, and we want it now.

The main question will be: will be be able to pay per download and watch or will it be streaming.
Skynet + Telenet give us a worrying evolution: a pay for what you see model, and then on top of that a pay for what you record model (I wonder when they'll start a pay for how many times you see it model...lol)
The version of iTunes is very clear for that matter: you pay and you get it.
Ok you can only see it on 5 machines, but at least you don't pay 5 times...

Are we going back in times here in Belgium?
I mean: Telenet and Belgacom TV charge much more for their digital content, plus you'll need to pay to record.
I stick to my old tv and my old vcr: doesn't cost me that much and does things as good...

Apple and global warranty

Keyboard-Broken
Apple now offers global warranty on all computer systems:

Apple Computer this week expanded its global warranty coverage to its entire computer system matrix.

This is truly amazing news, because it means that you can buy screens and Mac Mini's abroad for much cheaper prices and still have a world wide warranty (which allows you to have it repaired in Belgium for example, instead of sending it back.)
Jihaa.

Rumored...

Apple I Phone 1

These are just rumors...:

Amphetameme.org reads the tea leaves and carefully reasons why Apple is about to release an iPod "phone" which goes far beyond the everyday cellphone and takes mobile media to the next level. The site reviews a few key facts, such as the fact that Apple registered to sell mobile phones and mobile service, and is now officially a phone reseller. Plus, Apple has filed for a trademark for the phrase “Mobile Me.”

Need advise, urgently

Ok, here's the problem.
I get a new computer from work. (Apple thank you very much)
But I have to choose which one.

It is very easy, I would opt for the 12inch MacBook.
Except, it doesn't exist....
So, do I choose the 12inch pBook, with loads of extra's, or do I opt for a bare MacBook?
Knowing that: I love 12inch, it is soooo convenient to take with me.
All pBooks will dissapear eventually.
The new MacBook doesn't run heavy programs well (Adobe and Macromedia suck on it) and it will take long before they have native software.
The 12inch is extremely small screened.
The MacBook has FrontRow, a built-in camera and a cute remote...

Aaargh, such luxurious problems...

Universal Binaries

In the research on 'switch or not switch' to Mac Intel, I am checking my apps.
Are they already converted to universal binaries or not?

Universal Binaries:
Mail
Adium
iTunes
Quicktime
Sound Studio
Garageband
PictureSync
Airfoil
Podcastmaker (or Podcaster)
Keynote
iCal
Adressbook

Not yet:
Ecto (MarsEdit is a good alternative) (planned for fall 2006)
NetNewsWire (veryvery soon)
Skype
Firefox (Safari and Camino are universal)
Adobe
Macromedia Dreamweaver (BBEdit seems to work)
VLC
Romeo (Salling Clicker does)
Studiometry
MacBusiness
iView Media Pro (Apple's Aperture should do, + iPhoto6 should be running smoother with more options)

So it seems that my most used apps are running universal, or there are alternatives.
Except for Skype, Adobe and Macromedia.

So I guess I will go for it...

iTunes offering full length movies?

Now that Apple is offering Music Videos, Short Films and TV shows for download on their iTunes Music Store, the transition to selling full length movies is not a technical issue, but more of a marketing / licensing issue.

It appears Apple is now offering the first full-length movie for sale on the iTunes Music Store.

Boosting

Ars noted this afternoon that Apple has quietly enhanced the specifications of its high-end 30" HD Cinema Display.
The display's brightness, which was previously 270 cd/m2, is now listed at 400 cd/2. Meanwhile, its contrast ratio also appears to have been bumped from 400:1 to 700:1.
Pricing remains unchanged at $2500.

So when do the 23inches get a boost?

While away, I thought I might have missed the launch of a new Apple (April 1 was the 30th anniversary of Apple, a big event was forecasted)
But in reality, nothing was launched.
Except maybe... BootCamp, which turns your Mac into a PC in secs, officially from Apple...

I know this certain girl, who'll run to her dad now and present the facts: she can have a beautiful Apple AND officially run Windows on it. Two computers at once...

Nope, it ain't me ;) (But I am as happy, since it means I don't need an ugly PC to test my websites...)

Mac Intel

Ok I am sold... I just did an import from a 100 files in iViewMedia Pro Beta for MacIntel.
That took my Mini something like 2 minutes.
On my pBook that would take like 10 minutes?
Importing now 12754 pics. Wonder how long that will take. (Started at 8.35 PM... It is now 9PM 1362 done so-far...)

And my screen. Oh my god! My screen is huge... And perfect to watch tv series and large pictures.
(I know someone who'll be browsing my image collection to search for the perfect picture for her wall. ;) )

(Still love the size of my pBook though...)

Apple Repair

I received my 23inch screen (Heaven.) but apparently something is wrong with it...
I noticed the box was damaged, but the screen did well.
Until I watched a movie and I saw the right-upper-side of the screen looked much brighter than the rest of the screen. :(

No can do (for such an expensive screen...)

So I called the Apple Service Center.
I don't know who's complaining about Apple Services, I can't:
I ordered a screen on Tuesday. Wednesday it arrived...
It appears broken, I call today (Friday) and they already ordered 1. a new one + 2. a pick up for the broken one.

This is what I call smooth.

Update: and this is what I call smoother: instead of arriving on Tuesday (as promised), the new screen arrived on Monday.
I still have the old (bad) one. Unfortunately my desk is just too small, otherwise I could enjoy widescreen for a day...

Mac Mini: the remarks

I love my Mac Mini (intel). It goes blazing fast, is silent, the remote is splendid, and watching movies (or Lost) on it is great.
As my mom said: you don't need a television when having this (and then her eyes turned a little bit dreamy and I am sure she was seeing a similar set up in her living room, like others ;) )

Trailers for your iPod

I am stunned each time I open my MacMini and FrontRow and fluently see recent movie trailers on a full screen.
Seeing movie trailers is cool.

Today I noticed something else: On the www.aple.com/quicktime you now can download movie trailers straight away for your iPod.

Watching trailers: a nice alternative to the screaming kids on the train!

No word on podcasting yet though. (which would be even more convenient: no manual downloads but an automatic way to fill your iPod. I wonder why...)

Nike + iPod

Promonikeipod20060523
I am not much of a runner, but I know some who are really into their training schedule.

And who also love their iPod...

Today I checked the Apple+iPod thingy (because I am a geek, that's why ;P).
It is fabulous.
It would almost want me to love running. (Almost that is, don't presume I'll start running now. I have a beautiful motorcycle and I love it, and I have a bike and I love it too.)

The thing that intrigues me, is not the shoe, nor the ipod, nor the technique. But the program analysing it afterwards...

Synchero20060523

It is soooo f* beautifully designed... showing your progress (well in my case, i am not sure if there would be such a thing as progress...)

Manmanman...
I think I know someone who'd love to get this for a birthday or so...

The new mouse? Tactapad

Art03 Visu 01 Well, let's see the new mouse..
Tactapad uses some new techniques and looks very promising...:

Many tasks are most naturally done with both hands working together. Why should working on a computer be any different? Rotate a shape with two touches in a drawing application. Or move two pictures at once to get your page layout just right

Check the demo's to see what's possible.
Unfortunately, this design is not yet in production, and the estimated price of 1000 euro isn't what I'd call cheap.

Turn your mac into a TV

Elgatodtt

Looks like a cigarette litter...
Except for: it doesn't lit.
Or maybe it does: it lits your screen and shows digital tv...

The nice part?
It uses your Apple Remote (which in my case is more than enough with the 2! channels Belgium supports in DTT...)

Elgato did it.
Let's hope the antenna shows television over here (many people complain about bad waves)

So how long did we have to wait, you said?

Apple to rent DVD's online?

WWDC surprise: Apple to announce iTunes movie rentals

July 18, 2006 - With three weeks until Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, Think Secret has learned exclusively that CEO Steve Jobs will use his keynote address to announce the debut of movie rentals through the iTunes Music Store. While the announcement will undoubtedly be billed as a further extension of iTunes' dominance in digital media downloads, it represents a coup for the movie industry, which will have succeeded in standing its ground against Apple's pressures to offer consumers the option of owning movie downloads.

Skype Video for Mac...

Skypevideo

Skype, today, released two treats for us Mac users: Skype Beta 1.5 and Skype Video preview. Both are basically the same program with the exception that that the Video preview supports video chatting, though it is in it very early stages so it will crash (the Beta is more stable).

New in Skype Beta 1.5 is a totally new (and Macified) UI, detachable call window, the ability to import contacts from Address Book and Entourage, and a bunch more. Check out the changelog for the full dope.

MacBookPro

I finally received my MacBookPro and in fact I am pretty pissed.
It took 6! months to get the damn thing, on top of that it is NOT querty which means a big adaptation to me, since I am so used to querty (and it is so much more logic to do coding. Who the hell invented azerty and why do Belgians need it??)

Next to that, when it was ordered, back in Feb. the MacBookPro was still 1.83 Ghz. You'd think they'd do a free upgrade to the model as announced after the release of the MacBook, and for sure after getting such a large order from my school (Atleast 20 macs arrived today...) But no, ITPro apparently took it as an advantage to get rid of the old models...
So I got a 1.83 Ghz model.

Whining included.

I tell you. I could cope with all the rest: the 15inch, which is HUGE, the azerty keyboard, even the 1.83 Ghz.
But the whining???

That's why I am pissed and won't stop whining about it myself...
It is like getting an old p4 making an awful lot of noise...
Luckily Apple recognizes the whining problem...

So let's cross fingers Apple releases their iPhone this month, so I can go and get one and forget about this whining MBP...

Question to Mac Intel Owners: Adium keeps on crashing. What do you use instead to run your MSN chats?

MacBookPro, the sequel.

One day later:

All the installing and transferring of files never went sooooo smooth.
Even the general email problem I have (some how the current inboxes never seem to transfer) was solved easily and for sure, not forgotten like last times.

It is soooo fast :)

The light in the night is cool.
Come to think about it: since I just spent a whole lot of my savings, travelling will be down. So taking the computer along isn't such a fuss anymore.
On top of tat, making designs on a 12inch was a pain in the ass, there is just no space on the screen.
More over, in my new apartment, the 23inch will be standing in the living room, so if I watch tv late at night, in my own room, the MacBook 15 makes sure I don't need another screen.
(You can bet I'll make a shelf on perfect hight for that)

The whining is VERY annoying.

I do have Windows XP running on it. BUT, one needs ctrl, alt delete to access. Let there be no delete button on a MacBookPro... Damn.
We tried to put of that feature, but apparently 'disable' at pC doesn't mean 'disabled' in reality. So I have to add a keyboard each time to enter the delete thing.
Kris of Microsoft, isn't there another way, and don't tell me the change-a-key-function thing.
(Not adding a delete button on a keyboard is stupid, I know, but actually, I never used it on pc...)

Update: I went to ITPro and they said that normally they'll change the innerside of the computer... I have to give it in.
And n00.be is right: they changed; they are much more friendly nowadays... Must be the change of scene over there...

Macworld: Yes, the Mac Pro really is cheaper

Despite an earlier (and possibly biased) report proving the Mac Pro's price advantage, both Macworld and The Inquirer have also agreed that the Mac Pro is unquestionably cheaper than a similarly-configured Dell.
Jeez, when was the last time this happened?

Yessss! Nooooo!

Apple announces today:

Yessss!

-TV shows are now encoded at 640x480 (h264), up from 320x240 Told you so. Love it since I really buy series online and when I burn them I prefer dvd quality...(I think I will try to download everything I bought once again for better quality...)
-Movies!
From today onwards: films from Walt Disney, Pixar, Touchstone, Miramax. 75 films online now, more every week and month, most titles will be 9.99. Near DVD quality. Same encoding as TV shows at 640x480. If you have a 5mb/s broadband connection, it will take approximately 30 minutes to download a movie. Dolby surround audio in videos
(Hehe we have 15mBps here...)
U.S. now, International in 2007. (Yeah sure.. I know where to download my stuff today.)
That's 8 euro for a movie. Still a lot.
Video Palace offers similar prices, and one can rent a dvd there for quite a while.

Nooooo!

-New iPods.. Brighter video screens? That's it??? C'mon. They must be joking...

Yeeeeesssssss!

-You can take content to computer or iPod, but now... TV
1/2 size of Mac Mini, built-in power supply, USB, Ethernet, 802.11 "wireless component video", optical audio and HDMI ports, plus old RCA stereo audio ports. Works with Apple Remote.

I know what to save for :)

Nope no mobile. Dream on...

Apple iTunes: first test

Apple1
Now, when Apple announces 'h264' quality for their series/movies I wanted to see.

So I logged in to my account and checked what I wanted to see, Prison Break Second Season Episode 3 appeared to be a good choice.

The new polished menu tells it all:
508 Mb for one episode.
When compared to other former episodes: those used to be around 200Mb.

(I grabbed Flightplan too, just to check, and it already downloaded too. When I started downloading, the new service was freshly released, which might explain the downloading time, still then it went rather fast. -for a 500Mb that is-)

The quality is stunning. I don't have an iPod video, but I am sure it will be plain crisp on those brighter screens.
I do have a 23inch screen and my only interest in seeing Prison Break or any other series, is on that screen.
Quality of former episodes was certainly acceptable on a distance of 4 meter, but the H264 is from a different scaling: it is beautiful.
One can best compare it to the DiVx format.
There is barely no pixilation when sitting on 12 cm from the screen...

Which comes to the next point: 500Mb download for 1 episode is A LOT.
I think of my HD storage, and my bandwidth.
The US might be more advanced than Belgium on this matter, but I might end up paying a lot for these movies: that's an added 0,5 euro for the space on my HD (taking into consideration: 1Gb=1euro) plus the extra bandwidth it might use (only when I pass my limit of 15Gb/month)

One can back up on DVD, but still...
I already referred to Videoshops that offer similar movies for the same price, in real DVD quality.
If you want you can rent your movie over there for only 3 euro.

As for those Belgians interested: run to the nearest Office Centre, they now offer a 250Gb Lacie Porsche drive for 79 euro (without VAT)
That's less than 0.32 euro/GB...

Wireless streaming of video over the network

I am wondering:
Apple announced iTV, and Windows their new Zune.
If I understood well, both claim they will have video streaming over the network. The wifi 802.11g protocol.

It can not be at 54Mbps.
No way.

I have 54Mbps and no way I am streaming video from my shared library to another computer.
A clip of 5Mb works, but a series or a movie of 500Mb: hellish.

So I wonder:
Apple claims their tool will be capable of streaming video over the wireless network.
Or they found a new way/encodation to have a better bits and bytes transfer over the 54Mbps connection.
Or they'll introduce faster Airport Bases.
(And their 300 dollar iTV will need this new Base Station for wireless video streaming making it a 500 dollar media solution..)

And what about this Zune?
Movies wireless??
Anyone an answer?

Nokia N80, N90, N91, N92, N93 Sync tool for Apple Users

The N93 isn't included in the iSync package yet (Apple takes some time to upgrade their iSync tool, so the last mobiles are never included)

Luckily some enthusiast make plugins for those mobiles.

The iSync-plugin for the NSeries of Nokia can be found here.
Works like a charm.
(One needs to understand a bit of German to understand the instructions: which says: Quit iSync, drop the plugin marked in red into the shortcut folder, restart iSync, initiate your bluetooth connection and sync your device.)

(No thanks! ;))

I know some amongst you have a cinema display too.
And I know it rocks -especially when seeing prison break..-

But do you guys have the same problem as me?

I have the same problem all over (it is not only this border disappearing...)

Anyone an explanation?

Update: weirdest thing: I changed the settings of the cinema diplay -like tilting the screen with 90degrees- and then returned it to the former settings and now I do see the grey border...
Really weird...

Discovery: Pro tips for Mac

Tip of the Week
Instant Slide Shows Wherever You Are

Instantslideshow
Let’s say you open a window and there are 20 photos in that window. Want to see a quick slide show of those photos? Just press Command-A to select all the photos, then Control-click on any photo and from the contextual menu that appears, choose slideshow. A full-screen slide show of those photos (complete with a nice smooth dissolve transition) will appear onscreen.

If you want to see only some of the photos in a slide show, instead of selecting all the images, just Command-click on the photos you want in your slide show before Control-clicking on one and choosing slideshow. To quit the slide show in progress, just press the escape key on your keyboard.

More tips on the pro site.

Photoshop CS3

Photoshop CS3:

I thought you'd all like to know that Adobe just released a beta version of Photoshop CS3 for general download. The installer is unlimited as long as you have a valid PS CS2 or Creative Suite 2 serial number else it's a 30 day trial.

From my initial exploration there doesn't seem to be a lot of new stuff in this version, apart from a nice new interface and a new variables framework which I have no idea how to use yet.

Obviously one of the big things for Intel Mac users is that it's a Universal Binary. Finally!

Tease

While everyone is rushing to the stores for bargains, in the States the countdown started again...
Will there be an iPhone, will there be an iTV?
And if the first 30 years were just the beginning, what is going to happen next... (lol)

MacWorld thoughts

Header Logo
Ok, my longings for MacWorld (Actually it is funny, but I look more forward to MacWorld than to Christmas.)

One of my clients has paid, and although I want to save for that fabulous trip, I am certainly setting something aside for the new releases.

Actually I have all I need
And these days I am saving for furniture and wall coverings (see former posts)

So the main thing I am longing for on this MacWorld is not so much the iTV (though it would be nice when the desk finally arrives to have the Mac Mini back for working instead as TV)
but an update of FrontRow with a Wii-alike UI and that great remote!! I mean, face it, that stupid small remote of Apple is nice but doesn't work to well. It should point and allow you to click and drag.
And looking for an artist in your iTunes takes ages.
(If they don't release such a thing, I am buying a wii-remote and connect it using DarwiinRemote )

Next to that I want a 12 inch again.
Nothing as useful as a tiny pbook.

And a good tv-screen. My 23 inch rocks in my living room, but I want it back as computerscreen. And I want a 30something that hasn't the price of Apple's 30inch... and can be connected to the MacMini (goes only up til 23inch)

Do I want an iPod with bigger videoscreen? Nope, I won't watch it anyway.

Do I want the iPhone? I am not sure if this so hyped phone will meet our expectations. I have a good running n80 and I love it. It allows me to keep my agenda updated and next to that I can check my emails if i need to (while I rather don't do so)
It should do a lot.

What Boxhero1

Apple Tablet

In my wildest dreams there would be a wireless ipod that is the combination of the ipod, wii-remote and sonos.

That would make sense: take the ipod around, with your ear buds, arrive home, dock it to synchro, take it as remote and select your music, choose the source whereto (one of your airports) and hear it in your living room, or your bathroom, or wherever.
A movie? Stream it to your television, and use the ipod as remote to change the volume, or to advance in the movie etc. (the iTV would be the intermediate for the connections)

Strange thought? Don't think so. Apple has all the needed connections. The already existing hardware and software (Airport -needs an update though-, iTunes+Store, announced iTV.)
The problem: keeping things compact.

Although Apple has released a lot of new products (intel series and new ipods etc) the are no real 'hot things' since long. So such a thing would make sense, since it doesn't exist, isn't taking any existing (which Apple generally refuses to do)

If there iTv is only what they presented in September, there will be a lot of disappointment, since EyeTV offers practically the same.

Key features are UI, remote, and things moving into the living room.
Internet is moving 2 directions: on your phone and in your livingroom. And those are the 2 places they want to go.

iLife

Images-1
The only leak for Macworld, is the release of iLife 07. Something we all expected, since Apple releases an update each year.

In the beginning, I wasn't such a huge fan of iLife: iPhoto sucked big time, because of double saving the files, and it wasn't too professional. iMovie was very simple, but I wasn't a moviemaker, and on top of that the themes present were kind of childish. iWeb is another stupid thing: no webstandards, just blinking beautiful templates.

But as I kept on buying Apple computers, I ended up with the latest versions of iLife, and in certain circumstances iLife turned out to be a nice extra: burning a dvd for a client, easy and fast, or as a fast tool to sharpen up some images. And I noticed the tools got better, more professional. Garageband is capable of integrating movies for podcasts, and iMovie turned out to be an easy way to make stop-motion with pictures, while you can control each element.

Sometimes it crashes (and thus I recommend to save inbetween steps) but I can't imagine another program and tend to understand within 3 hours, and make stunning results.

And as video turns out to be pretty common these days, I recommend iMovie: with its transitions, subtitles, image and sound import, you can make that little movie you filmed to be a great home movie.

Today I wonder what Apple will have added to their iLife 07. Hopefully some bug fixes.
But really, I try to see other useful features, without complicating the UI. iMovie already has HD, Garageband pod/vodcasting, and iWeb blogging, iPhoto has RAWsupport, and iDVD imports all stuff above.

So help me out. What can be added except for more themes?
(Webstandards... please give us webstandards :) The ability to add custom CSS :) )

iMovie adepts in the neighbourhood?

Any one of you is good with iMovie?
I have a little tiny (HUUUGE) problem:
when importing color images in iMovie, in order to make a slideshow (Burms effect) and exporting the result I get pixelated images. Really pixelated. I tried everything by now (even praying to G*d), but no answer is coming.
Anyone of you ever had this problem?
(Oh, google didn't come up with a good solution either)

Tried: removing the Ken Burms effect, using smaller jpg's, adjusting the images in Aperture in order to change something. Result: in BW pictures I don't have this problem.. But I need the color...

Apple iPhone: WTF?

Iphonelockscreen20070109

I take back me saying I don't want the iPhone.
I DO WANT IT.
So damn beautiful...
And what a UI!!

iPhone combines three products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone.

But:
This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.

Snif...

Checking the features:
-wifi + bluetooth
-quad band

Now tell me whatever you want, but this IS the device I was talking about last time I mentioned what I was longing for: an ipod as a remote to send music to my stereo.
Since it runs Mac OS X native, it means that it will not take ages to have sallingclicker working this device, making it a remote for your computer.
And since it has wifi, it can (hopefully) stream music through airport express.

Telling you Apple is better than Santa Claus!

Remark: Apple teamed up with google and yahoo.
Believe it or not...

These ads really make me smile each time...

Why I like some stuff better than other.

Last night I was wondering why I like some stuff better than other.
Why did I get touched by that 20 years old B&O more than a recent hifi set? Why do I prefer Apple above PC? Why am I stunned by the iPhone?

It is more than only the design. It is even more than the usability. Or the combination of those.
And then I figured it out: 'I totally freak out on the special push buttons... ' I wrote yesterday.
Both Apple and B&O oblige us to touch their peripherals in a soft and tender way.
You gently put your finger on the touch sensitive button.
You gently move over the mouse pad.
They make us touch a cold and material utensil the way we touch someone we love. Tenderly.
They turn an 'it' into a 'she'.

I truly believe that's their strength.

I totally lost it when I saw how the iPhone obliges you to activate it:
by gently touching it from one side to the other. Slowly... And then taking the finger back.
Compare it to what you want, but actually I think it is pretty sexy...
The whole UI continues in the same manner: scrolling through your phonebook or your iTunes collection is done by striking the screen.
And in the end, disconnect your finger from the touch screen.

This striking or touching (with gentle and subtile moves) returns in all their products: from the touch pad, to the light buttons of your Apple screen. The way the buttons feel, til the way your mac mini eats your cd's. Slowly. Even the little scroll ball of the mighty mouse has it, because it is so small.

Each B&O has the same story: touch sensitive buttons, sliding windows, soft touches.

I think that's the part other manufacturers can learn something from:
make your device as personal as you can, actually try to turn it into a person. And let your users connect through their senses...

iPhone, really a miracle?

I admit, when having the first look at the iPhone, I was fond of it. I loved it. I still do.
The iPhone sells me dreams: it makes me long for the most beautiful mobile out there, featuring new ways to navigate communication.

But then there is the drawback...
The same drawback when figuring out how to make a Media Center out of the Mac Mini: the set up is working *almost* perfect over here.
Almost that is like: it isn't without some disadvantages.

I wonder about the disadvantages of the iPhone.
The first disadvantage I saw, when visiting the site was this sentence:
'This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.'

All we saw, was a dream.
-Running Mac Os x: yeah right... As if you could run all programs on this little device. It is a reduced version of Mac Os X...
-Widgets: nice, but only Apple produces widgets. So what about my Salling Clicker?? And the rest I certainly would love to have...
-Break through internet device? The UI is revolution, but not the features. My Nokia n80 can do it all. And it even has a similar browser.
-Touch screen: I am not so convinced. I mean it really really has to work really good. Otherwise touch screens are annoying.
-Bluetooth: Rumor is the iPhone doesn't sync using bluetooth... Now c'mon, I'll hope they fix it...

En plus, the iPhone does *NOT* have:
-iChat
-RSS reader
-a blogclient
-Word (not that i used it before)
-Skype

The funny thing is: my Nokia N80 features all above (except for Skype). And pretty well.
I don't love the UI much, and I admit having installed a skin that makes it look like Mac Os X, to make it easier for me to work with (which it really does. I think Nokia should look into their UI, and their icons to make things more clear)

In fact, actually my Nokia features all the stuff I like: I sync using bluetooth, I have a Salling Clicker remote, a blogclient -I rarely use-, and a MSN chat (but no video chat, otherwise it would be used all the time).
It has an MP3 player with a removable SD card (which I like better than the fixed format of the iPhone)
It has wireless internet, which rocks.
And it even has widsets! Plus tons of software you can install.
(I am still waiting for the Skype release for Symbian.)

I admit, the phone I have is the best one I had until now (and I did have a few already...)
So why would I still buy the iPhone?
Because of the UI. Only because of the UI.
The MP3 player on the Nokia isn't easy to work with. It cannot sync my iTunes. I didn't figure out how to change the front panel until someone showed it to me. And somehow I always manage to get a 'are you really willing to delete this person'-warning while I never intended to.

Nokia, use your advantage and grab you chances: look into your UI.
Because I will hesitate to buy a 800 euro device, if I have one that does what it needs to do, and it does it good.
But it can do better.

(With the release of the N95, featuring a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss..., a GPS!, a video with DV quality. Wifi and even USB 2.0, at the same size of my n80, I have to admit it feels like they have a worthy competitor to the iPhone. Especially when seeing the price tag...)

FlickrExport for Aperture

Logoaperture20060925
Since I started testing Aperture for Mac, I am totally fond of it.

It enhances my workflow with 300%.
Most of us photographers don't need all the functionality of Photoshop to enhance an image.
Checking the colors, and sharpness is more than enough in most cases.
And a fast overview to delete the bad ones.

It works pretty fast (though sometimes it seems to freeze the system for a while)
The export functions are numerous, but I was very pleased to read there is a FlickrExport for Aperture.
In installed it, and yesterday, after only 2 try-outs, I bought it: it is fabulous: the sharpening is perfect (I did some test in the past with other exporters which turned out to be blurry), it allows you to batch upload, assign keywords in batch, add it to an existing or even a new set.
In fact it allows me to update my Flickr without even entering Flickr.
(Somehow I don't like the admin of Flickr, it is way to much of an effort. (I have this with any blog, btw))

Read: I love it.
Slowly slowly I start to like this new (well working) work-flow.
In the past opening digital images was a hassle: first trying to get an overview, with thumbnails not revealing anything, opening them one by one on in one or another program. Then adjusting them in Photoshop, since iPhoto was not really 'well', thus renaming all the files in 'YAP' (yet another program')

Today, I open in Aperture, adjust, upload to Flickr, export the masters or the derives. Rename them.
Burn them on a DVD.
I can even make a quite simple iDVD.
And it just works...

Who said Microsoft hates Apple (& vice versa)

Check this Microsoft page, scroll down and see how they advertise Garageband and iLife for Making Music.

Microsoft

I have to admit: I didn't install my version of Vista yet. (It a fuzz, I have to reinstall my whole MacMini, since I want to do the Spring clean up at once.)
The fancy bags that joined those boxes on the other hand, well, I might be the only person in town wearing a Microsoft Vista bag containing a MacBookPro ;)

Keep on dreaming

Remember this post:

Now tell me whatever you want, but this IS the device I was talking about last time I mentioned what I was longing for: an ipod as a remote to send music to my stereo.
Since it runs Mac OS X native, it means that it will not take ages to have sallingclicker working this device, making it a remote for your computer.
And since it has wifi, it can (hopefully) stream music through airport express.

My dreams got a little blurred when it was announced that bluetooth didn't do those things.
Yet, recently all these rumors appear..

4-15-07-Iphone Remote Patent

According to a recent filing, Apple engineers explain how a mysterious "mobile phone" could be used to control your Mac (and specific applications like iTunes) via built-in Bluetooth, and the wording even mentions specific software that would be tailored to the Mac and handset in order to make it all happen. More specifically, consumers could "use the directional controls on the mobile phone to change listing volume, skip forward and backward, play / pause, etc.," and while no mention of the forthcoming iPhone is directly made, the allusion here is fairly clear.

So will we, in the end, be able to use the iPhone as the missing remote (coz face it guys, that little tiny remote they deliver is pretty useless.)
