Notebooks
'I never travel without my notebook. One should always have something sensational to read in the train."
Oscar Wilde
"To lose a passport was the least of one's worries. To lose a notebook was a catastrophe.' Bruce Chatwin 'Sitting on a wine barrel, facing the sea, in the far south, I make notes in an authentic moleskine, a museum piece which Bruce gave me especially for this trip..."
Luis Septilveda
It is two centuries now that Moleskine has been the legendary notebook of European artists and intellectuals, from Van Gogh to Matisse, from the exponents of the historical avant-garde movements to Ernest Hemingway.
This long-standing tradition was continued by writer-traveller Bruce Chatwin who used to buy his moleskines at an old Paris stationery shop: he had always some moleskines in his knapsack, even for his friends, like Luis Sepfilveda.
Many are the sketches and notes, ideas and emotions that have been jofted down and harboured in this trustworthy pocket-size travel companion before being turned into famous pictures or the pages of beloved books.
This silent and discreet keeper of an extraordinary tradition, which has been missing for years, has been reproduced by the Italian company Modo & Modo: in a few years moleskine has met an increasing success, becoming a symbol of contemporary nomadism.
Moleskine is a family of notebooks for different functions, according with a free mindstyle, both basic and emotional.
One to have!!!! [I've bought myself one as a present]

Swatch makes jewellery. And I have to say, I like.
If it wasn't for the fact that I prefer to wear 'self-created' stuff I would be tempted...
I guess others are already.

Protect Your Laptop With Style
Careful, this is not yet another “trendy laptop case”. The Knomo bags are not only elegant and stylish, they do in fact offer something more. Each bag includes a tracking-tag system, the Knomo Tracker, which makes it possible to track your bag online in case it gets lost or worse, stolen. Each bag has a unique owner code and by registering it online you will be able to track your bag and its contents at www.knomobags.com.
You can fit a 14/15 inch laptop inside a quilted, removable document pouch. The bag also comes with a smaller pouch for cables and peripherals … and of course it has inner pockets for PDAs, mobile phones and/or iPods. You can purchase one directly on the site, prices range from £ 150,- to £ 235,-.

Acme Made iPod Cases
More present tips:
More iPod accessories, yay. Acme Made makes really nice, lightweight laptop bags that aren't the usual black and boring, and they've just announced new iPod cases in custom-dyed luxe textiles.
The iPod wallet, available for the Mini and the standard sized iPod, is made of Italian leather with a cashmere and microsuede lining. Both ends are open so you don't have to unplug any cords when you store your iPod. There's a strap for your headphones. Available in pink, blue, or lime. $49 for the Mini size, and $59.99 for the standard size.
The iPod Traveler provides more heavy-duty protection. There's a zipper flap that protects the iPod from scratches when opening and closing the case. The traveler is available in red or black, same prices as the iPod wallet.

Target: Design for All
If you have not yet caught Target's latest TV ad, Design for All, you must go watch it right away. It's a brilliant illustration of what design is. Target's manifesto and promise is that you're going to love living by design. Lots of us already do, but there are so many people out there who don't get it. This spot sums it up perfectly as Target continues to make good design accessible to a larger audience.

Satellite dish.
This view reminds me of a BBQ on a roof in Petrograd, back in January 2002.
Our BBQ was an old satellite dish...
Dirk Wijnants seems to have a similar inspiration source with his Qrater.
Extremis has beautiful design objects which I would love to buy one day.
I prefer the Sticks and the IceCube. Would fit in my fantasy house.
(Though.. I might stick to my satellite dish due to more fit-to-my-wallet prices)

What a wonderful idea: people rent together a place and can come there to write.
A huge loft. In New York.
And a membership for 100 dollars/months, with wireless internet.
Simple, yet perfect.

Thinking exercice: how to save space
In a thinking exercise how to organize space and comfort I came across these pictures, and must say I like the way the space is divided.
Lux11 is a new hotel concept in Berlin.
Conceived more as a boarding house than hotel, the reception desk is only open during business hours and cleaning services occur every few days. Each of the 72 "apartments" include a full kitchen, fax, phone with voicemail, a safe, DVD player, LCD television, queen or king size beds (no twins), Lux's own line of toiletries, Linari room scents, and ceiling-mounted "rain" showerheads. Designed by London architect team Silvestrin/Salmaso, lichen-colored poured concrete forms the basis for pared-down open floorplans offset by eggshell white and wood-accented furniture. Executive and Premiere suites feature bathtubs and two televisions, smaller rooms look onto a rear courtyard while larger ones face the street, and nightly rates start at a modest 115 euros.
Check it out.

Holiday wishlists
Half original, half gimmicky, this t-shirt is a blackboard with a piece of chalk that you can wear. Perhaps you wake up and decide that your Pabst Blue Ribbon Vintage Tee just isn't cool enough for you today. Well now you can mosey on downtown to the local hipster shop and copy all the latest cool phrases onto your shirt. This could also be used to your advantage on picking up women/men by writing a phrase such as "Hey sweetcheeks. Call me at: 555-5555". Absolute genius. This tee goes for $40 but doesn't include creativity. You gotta bring your own.

Thought of going to shop, look for bargains. But as I passed through the city today, I kinda re-thought that idea.

Or other nice stuff somewhere around?

Compari pendant light
This cheeky pendant light by lighting designer Ingo Maurer is made of 10 original Campari bottles, each one detachable. It's not surprising that Campari bottles make a visually striking lamp - the color of Comapri always struck me as lush and beautiful. The lamp is relatively affordable compared to other Maurer lamps and is currently on sale for $289 at Form & Function.
You should check out Maurer's other designs and lighting installations on his website. They are stunning, whimsical and fantastic. One of my favorites is the very fanciful Birdie chandelier.

Bought a Rony-mobile
Yep, it happened to me again... I lost my mobile.
Must be number 10 or so...
After a profound design survey (with her) and the practical side (I want only mobiles with Bluetooth and Mac-compatibility.) I bought the z520i.
(The fact that it closes makes sure I cannot make phone calls without knowing. ILI)
Now, when arriving home, I discovered that in fact it is a Rony-mobile...
It has lights all over, and when some one calls me, it seems like a juke-box going off...
Wallah!
Took me a while before finding the solution to that problem (and dimming the lights).
By now, it turned into a nice normal phone, and I like it.
Tip for the Apple-users: the z520i does synchronize with iSync in Panther, but you need to set up the bluetooth from the phone and not through the Apple Bluetooth set up. (This will save you needless annoyance.)

Floating desk
In a former life, I was a carpenter during 8 months.
I just loved it: by now I know how to design, and cut wood into furniture.
My first self made* design was my desk.
Unfortunately due to the lack of (capable) men in my life, I never managed to install my desk like I imagined it.
That was until suddenly yesterday Kris came and took my desk, and returned it today, installing it with chemical junctions into my wall.
So finally my floating desk is actually floating (nothing beneath it!!!), and so to say: I love the result...
Tx Kris!
*From drawing, to cutting wood, til the final result.

Batibouw is worth a visit! Certainly the palace of kitchens ;) and of bathrooms.
For the bathrooms I do advise;

For kitchens:
-Obumex
-Siematic
And there was an amazing one which name I forgot.

Dark at Sfinx
Tested the caipirinha in Sfinx tonight and it got labeled : 'incomparable' to the one of last night...
What is also incomparable in the good sense of the word is the design...
The little beautiful lights are from 'dark' (what's in a name...)

Perfect Photo/PC Bag
The zipper of my wonderful photo/pc bag broke down.
So these days I'll be looking for a new bag.
PJ pointed me out to this one:
Might opt for this Little Pimp of Crumpler.
But if one of you can recommend me others or better: links are always welcome.
(I am looking for the 'perfect' bag: the one that doesn't show it hides expensive material, is easy to wear and to work with, and is flashy/design enough to be seen with -though people call me a geek, I don't want to look like one..-)
A good link for people looking for something similar is this one to ShinyShiny Bags

Looking for a living space.
It is no secret, I am slowly seeking for a decent place to live.
Well designed.
One thing that makes the search more difficult is the fact that prices are leveling the sky at this moment (that is: for a single woman like me...)
But the main reason (as always): I just don't find my taste.
How come we are living (finally) in the 21th century, with all kind of new materials, new working conditions and new needs, and still architects are building like we're in the last century??
An example:
I sincerely believe we need to settle with less space to live in.
I don't have a problem with that: there are many single people (much more than in the last century I believe..) and it is a fact: we don't need large houses, it just means more cleaning...
On top of that all our devices get multifunctional: a tv will be able to show internet, we have portables to work on, which makes us move around and several places will merge into one.
One thing to consider: working at home will be a concept appearing more and more in the future, thus something that needs to be foreseen in the living spaces. Yet, it will mean portables rather than desktop computers.
I think we live in an era of bigger windows to catch more light.
One might oppose, but we have all the right materials to minimize the loss of energy caused by large windows.
Actually we have a lot of new technology to implement in new houses.
Architecture should be something that pushes the borders and takes advantage of green energy (because facing reality: oil will finish...)
Ok, so what does Ghent give of new buildings:
Not to mention the prices of these horrible projects...
You look at them and know that within years these buildings are so dated. The concept is in no way different from the concepts of 20 years ago. Yet our needs and ways of living have significantly changed.
The only interesting project found was this one:
A combination of workspace and living units with loft-a-like capacities.
Ghent has few of those sites, and it intrigues me: buzzing workspaces in the week, but in the evening peace and quiet for those who live there.
That's an interesting approach to me.
Big windows with almost no insight, enlarging the rather small housing units by pulling the outside inside.
Loads of green space that is shared, but not that much since indeed work and living gather on different time-spots.
It seems somehow modern living concepts haven't been integrated in Ghent as much as I would like to see it. Maybe the city should consider it more, in order to make it a city of the future, with a good combination of working and living.

Ok, so I have been whining about ugly new architecture in Ghent.
And yes I have been watching for houses/studio's around.
Last week I saw a 36 sqm studio for 84000 euro. It felt like an aquarium inside.
And then I see these prefab stuff popping up all around the world.
Zenkaya for example is based in South Africa. They deliver beautiful prefab houses, with all one needs to live in.
This unit is rather small: 22 sqm, but they go up to 66 sqm (check the technical specifications)
And their delivery time is within 12 weeks!
When will we see this appear in Belgium?
I am spotting empty rooftops now. ;)

Discoveries of today
My favorite paper shop didn't sell the 'Moleskine Cityguides' yet...
Instead I arrived home with 2 Plain Reporter Books...
in which I reported my 'found today's':
-Tasty in Hoogpoort: reminds me of the taste of Syria and Tel Aviv, by selling fruity juices. I like the banana-apple-orange mix (which isn't on their list...)
-Cream sells David and Goliath tees, but finding my way in their collection is much easier online..
-And Fnac is holding some kind of Gay highlight, presenting DVD's, books, comics etc.
I loved 'The devil's playground' of Nan Goldin. But I didn't buy it.
Already lost my heart on the comics by then:
Leo, the man of Aldebaran and Betelgeuze, apparently has another series: Kenia. Had to have... Luckily De Poort had them.
That's it? Yep, the money's gone...

At 33.000 $ this is a very affordable home I'd say.

Architecture I like
Told her I like forties, fifties and sixties modern architecture.
What I mean:
Frank Lloyd Wright
Le Corbusier
Alvar Aalto
Mies Van Der Rohe
Eero Saarinen
Mainly the International Style... an evolution from Bauhaus
(I happened to live 2 years in the Walhalla/White City of Bauhaus)
The main features of modern architecture:The most commonly used materials are glass for the facade, steel for exterior support, and concrete for the floors and interior supports; floor plans were functional and logical.

Belgian design...
Serpentine: plug and spray garden shower
We are happy to present our brand new Serpentine garden shower. This product designed by Tom De Vrieze is a valuable addition to the extremis range.
Place the Serpentine wherever you want. Plug your regular garden hose to the end of the stainless steel tube and your shower is ready for use.
Serpentine is a garden shower with an attractive and practical design. The added value comes from the light construction which provides very easy mobility in the garden.
A major advantage is the plug and spray feature. No longer any problems with pressure pumps or permanent constructions, just plug in the hose, open the tap and have a shower. Because the hose is exposed to the sun, the water inside the hose and the Serpentine heats up and has a nice temperature.
The design is from Tom De Vrieze, who won some prizes with it.
For 360 euro it would fit on my dream house with huge roof terrace ;)
A pity we haven't so much sun over here...

Antwerp
I wanted to go to Antwerp, to a little design fair near Winkelhaak.
Winkelhaak is a beautiful building housing young designers in a nice concept: by paying their monthly rent, all costs are covered and they get a beautiful infrastructure included.
It was built in the former prostitute neighborhood and by building it, the area got a new input. (Quite some effort was done in this neighborhood: they also built the Permeke Library.)
The fair wasn't such a big deal, though I am sure some amongst you would have found something stuff they'd want...
We managed to sneak in the guided tour of the Winkelhaak.
As all of you know by now, I love nice architecture, and hearing the motivation behind some of these concepts is just interesting.
The weather was beautiful, and we decided to pretend as if it was vacation. So we headed for the beach after the tour.
Strantwerpen enlarged their beaches and now they have one near the Vlaamse/Waalse Kaai.
It felt like Tel Aviv. It really did.
I found out Antwerpen can feel like vacation, and really, I can imagine spending a weekend discovering the city.
Today I'll have vacation in Gent again...
PS: Tip: never ask a guy from De Lijn how to get to the beach...
Just ask people in the street. And remember Antwerpen has a metro, which in some cases is faster than the tram.

Design in Antwerp
Remember my complaint about the lack of well designed apartments in Ghent.
Antwerp has many of what I long for.
And I figured out my main concern is: large windows, and a terrace.
If they can build this in Antwerp, why not in Ghent??
(OK, they don't seem to be the cheapest apartments, I know, but pic number 1,2 and 3 show you the limitations and how they still integrated good design to make it more compelling.)

Nike + iPod
I am not much of a runner, but I know some who are really into their training schedule.
And who also love their iPod...
Today I checked the Apple+iPod thingy (because I am a geek, that's why ;P).
It is fabulous.
It would almost want me to love running. (Almost that is, don't presume I'll start running now. I have a beautiful motorcycle and I love it, and I have a bike and I love it too.)
The thing that intrigues me, is not the shoe, nor the ipod, nor the technique. But the program analysing it afterwards...
It is soooo f* beautifully designed... showing your progress (well in my case, i am not sure if there would be such a thing as progress...)
Manmanman...
I think I know someone who'd love to get this for a birthday or so...

The new mouse? Tactapad
Well, let's see the new mouse..
Tactapad uses some new techniques and looks very promising...:
Many tasks are most naturally done with both hands working together. Why should working on a computer be any different? Rotate a shape with two touches in a drawing application. Or move two pictures at once to get your page layout just right
Check the demo's to see what's possible.
Unfortunately, this design is not yet in production, and the estimated price of 1000 euro isn't what I'd call cheap.

Plug and play office
Design company Bosch & Fjord, a collaboration between the visual artists Rosan Bosch and Rune Fjord Jensen have created a furniture system, for Innovation Lab’s new space at the Copenhagen’s IT University, on the premise of ‘innovation’, that is the ‘plug and play’ answer to furniture design. It enables an organization to refurnish, move to another site or grow and shrink without difficulty.
Premised on the condition of moving, the system considers possibilities for rearranging rooms and combining elements and is intended for an innovative organizational structure in constant change. It consists of big shipping crates that work as modules with different things on the inside, e.g. a workstation, part of a conference room or a kitchen. The crates are designed to fit into any standard building. When the crates are brought into the building from the truck, they are placed in a room and opened. Each function has its own crate with its own explicit identity and design.
The crates include three different kinds of workstations, enabling individual Lab Agents to choose their own place according to character, need or mood. There is a small, intimate meeting room with a green lounge sofa and a video-conference room built as a light green ‘blue-screen film studio’, enabling choices between backgrounds for video conferences. There is also a pink kitchen box, as well as a big biomorphic worktable with a palm tree in the centre. The crates can be combined into rooms with closed doors or left open.

Studio 804
Frankly speaking, if I'd start another study, and my maths would be better, it would be the one at Studio 804:
I copy paste:
Studio 804 is a design/build program at the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Design that provides a broad range of architectural services, typically resulting in a new residence. This studio is the final experience for 3rd year graduate students seeking a professional masters degree, although on occasion it does include graduating bachelors of Architecture students. During this final exercise, the students collaborate to bring a housing design to fruition that provides architectural solutions with an emphasis on affordable homes.
and
With the exception of the licensed trades (electric, plumbing and heating/air conditioning), every aspect of design and construction is carried out by the students.
Great: learning how to draw a house, but also building it yourself.
What a wonderful idea. And the results... Stunning.

New apartment
Tuesday I'll decide if I 'll be moving to a new apartment.
But I can say: what I saw is amazing... Ghent has few places that have my main concerns: light + terrace.
But apparently we found one...
I noticed it few days ago when going for lunch with a good friend, and already some days later, we were visiting the place to see if it fits our needs.
Big windows indeed! :))
And enough space to do a BBQ.
Great.
Fingers crossed...

(And that's an answer for all those people who comment by saying: all these ready made houses are no good in Belgium, because of the rain... Well, if they can survive in London, I can tell ya: they'll fit in Belgium too.)

Eames
Some weeks ago I saw these amazing beautiful chairs. Yesterday I saw them again.
I really really like them, so I looked them up: Charles&Ray Eames chairs from Vitra: DSR side chair, designed back in 1948... So damn beautiful.
If anyone has 4 of them in white and wants to get rid of them for a nice price, you know who to contact...
Hmm after some googling I found this interesting spot

Podliving
Jade Design makes little apartments for NYC.
They integrated some kind of pod in to implement the bathroom/kitchen.
Interesting approach. Not what I'd do, but nevertheless interesting.
JADE is a residential NYC real estate project with Starck cie Yoo just off of Union Square in Chelsea. It’s also Jade Jagger, who lends her name and signature style to the project. Although the collaboration isn’t new, the design elements for this project are; Spanish and Moroccan influences for the rooftop terraces and minimalist service cubes called Pods for the apartments. It’s the pods that got our attention, set in the center of each apartment, they house a kitchen, bathroom and wardrobe, all behind doors that can conceal when required.

Divider
While wondering how I could 'divide' a room I stumbled upon this solution out of Cologne:
Nola Star.
The right room divider can transform a sprawling open space by creating intimacy and adding dimension. Nola Star takes the concept a couple steps further with customizable patterns that also let in light. Available in two different patterns and in transluscent candy colors, the round-edged plastic squares measure approximately 8x8 inches and have holes on all four sides that connect with metal rings. The flexibility means Nola Star can be configured to nearly any space—whether mid-room, as a wall covering, in a window, or simply as an accent element—and it can fold out of the way if needed.
Nice...

More Google Sketchup
The nice thing about Google Sketchup you ask?
Well that's simple: the enormous library that is being built up by everybody.
You need a chair to fill in your space, google it and import it into the program.
If I was marketing manager at Ikea International, I'd put a series of students and have them make the whole collection in 3d, free available online.
If anyone feels like designing my Eames chairs in Sketchup, let me know. Didn't find them yet...

Basic Knives
Anything but simple, the Basic Knives collection is a design by Caroline Noordijk that brings tons of functionality and increased productivity into the kitchen. Utilizing the flat, empty surface of the blade, Caroline incorporates other kitchen tools into the knife. This eliminates having to switch tools and saves time. Having a peeler, grater, zester, or a measuring spoon in my hand at the same time as the knife would do wonders for speeding up my dinner prep time.
Nice...since my roommates like to cook... ;)

The most beautiful prefab ever...
One of the most beautiful, flexible, and complex prefab systems we’ve covered in the last year is the Ray Kappe designed Living Home. For better and worse, it was covered this week in the LA Times by writer Christopher Hawthorne in the article “Such a deal?” Although he addressed several shortcomings that bother us about the current prefab industry, we can’t help but feel he cast a harsh light on prefabs in general based upon this high end model.
“…the last thing the fledgling prefab movement needs at this point is aggressive marketing or more hype. What it needs is a reality check.” –Christopher Hawthorne, LA Times
Yes, the Living Home is expensive. Look at it! I can’t believe it’s under $2 million; this is the Cadillac of current prefab designs. Don’t knock it on approachability and affordability, because that’s definitely not the target market which Kappe was designing for.
This “product” offers a beautiful, spacious, and quick move-in design for those with sophisticated modern tastes- and relatively deep pockets. There are many other prefab models in production that do provide a more affordable housing option. Tiny ones like the Weehouse, several designs by Michelle Kaufman, and the sub-$100,000 option by Rocio Romero are all good examples.
Certainly my cup of tea, except for the price tag...

Leonardo Table and Chairs
We all know that beautiful furniture can be sexy in a shiny, sleek and sinuous sort of way, but two young French designers Bertrand Clerc and Olivier Gregoire have made their furniture sexy in a physical and psychological way with their Leonardo table and chairs.
What really makes furniture attractive is not just how it looks, but how we interact with it; the way a table or chair or table is designed can totally dictate our behaviour, posture and attitude. An uncomfortable chair makes us fidgety, while soft sofa relaxes us. It is not often, however, that we leave our feelings behind us when we get up and walk away. Maybe the scattered cushions or rumpled bedclothes hint at what went on, but they are only subtle clues.
Leonardo, which is still at prototype stage, not only clearly evokes a moment of human behaviour through form but also encourages future occupants to do the same. Imagine sitting at this table and not feeling just a little bit flirty. How can you resist? Bertrand Clerc tells us, “Leonardo finds itself between art and function…it is humanized by the fact that the material has received a human imprint. The object fossilizes a moment of intimacy, it submits itself to the imperceptible then the impalpable becomes tangible. And so form doesn't follow function, it follows the feelings. Leonardo is an ode to love.”

Lee West
I am looking for nice lamps. I checked Ikea, and they have nothing.
(Actually my mom called me yesterday saying 'The new Ikea book, well... It is such a disappointment There is NOTHING inside of it. Nothing...' I can assure you, my mom sounded disappointed. And I also can tell you she's got taste -I guess that's where mine was born...-)
So not too much Ikea stuff for this new move.
Maybe the internet has something to offer (Maybe? Hehe, the internet has ALWAYS something)
I liked the lamp on the right (the one on the left is a copy cat of something...)
But if you know profound ideas of light, don't hesitate to send them in!
Lee West is a young English designer who has been working in Paris since 2000. He's quickly made a name for himself "Create(ing) useful objects with maximum material quality" for Ligne Roset, Cinna, Arc international, Paco Rabanne perfumes and Seiko. We like his sensibility for organic forms and mirrored surfaces.
Here are a few of his works (more after the jump):
His Boss table lamp in double cased white and transparent cut glass for Cinna, above right, and his Supernova floor lamp in triplex glass from Cinna, above left

AIW-5 In-Wall Speakers
Looking for good quality sound without the ugly speakers? The Amina Tech AIW-5 speakers go inside the wall itself, behind the plaster. They use NXT flat speaker technology to set up vibrations in a composite panel, which are transmitted through the plaster of the wall.
The company claims the sound is good enough to be used as part of a home theater setup, with each speaker generating a decent 80 watts of power.
Nice to have music n a good design. Sorry: in no design.

Designersweekend Brussels
Years ago, I must have been like 12 or so, I was introduced to DesignersWeekend by my dad.
It was for 'profs only' back then, if I remember well, and I went along with my dad.
We were fed by design those days. (My dad used to manage a huge design shop in Avenue Louise)
17 years later I am still in love with beautiful stuff, and I am pretty sure the origin dates from back then, playing around between B&B Italia and DeSede, and many others. (At 14 I almost bought my first designers chair.)
Now piece by piece I try to gather the stuff I liked back then already.
Not this weekend but the next: DesignersWeekend in Brussels.
Anyone joining in?
Check the program here.

Bic Carpets
Today I had to record a VODcast at the Deloitte offices in Brussels.
And they had this beautiful corner with nice Barcelona chairs; but what struck both Kris and me more was the beautiful carpet accompanying it.
So soon I was taking a picture, and stting on my knees checking the brand of this beauty.
Bic it said...
So here I am, googling, and apparently, these beauties are produced in Belgium!:
For almost fifty years now B.I.C. (Belgian International Carpets) has been a leader in the market for high-quality woven floor covering. Our collections of broadloom and rugs in pure wool are appreciated for their creativity, originality and flexibility. These woven design carpets add a unique, personal and comfortable element to every particular interior. Architects and interior designers use them frequently for larger projects such as offices, shops, hotels ... and even aeroplanes.
Investments in our plants in Kortrijk and Wevelgem are always aimed at quality rather than quantity. Revolutionary and flexible production systems , an eye for trends, a sense of beauty and a strong service orientation ensure the future of our high-end design rugs.
And guess where they'll be presented (Yep, Brussels DesignWeekend, next week :) )
Mmmmm wouldn't they like to have a new website maybe? In return for a beautiful carpet?

Le Klint
Le Klint is a lighting system that can be changed according to your taste.
Perfect when you tend to change your taste once in a while, or perfect to change according to different occasions: christmas design lamps are suddenly no problem anymore, a romantic night, or a useful working light, all becomes possible with their Undercover lamp.

Designer's Weekend
In my memories Designers Weekend was something special: there were little busses driving people around, starting at a place offering a little apero, continuing to the next place where you were welcomed with a little appetizer, followed by a small lunch at the next place and so on.
(I remember the food VERY well, so no one will convince me I dreamt it... Years ago, DWE was something special WITH food.)
Yesterday I was a little disappointed: the cars were not so well organized and there was no such thing as something special. So our fine little group switched from design weekend to fancy bars, and a park.
Regarding the weather it was even better than seeing design (the bars were actually pretty design too).
As for DWE, I think it just became too popular during the years.
And I guess I grew up and what was new and spectacular design back then is something I know these days. (Actually the designers just stayed the same. Still like them.)

Yessss! Nooooo!
Apple announces today:
Yessss!
-TV shows are now encoded at 640x480 (h264), up from 320x240 Told you so. Love it since I really buy series online and when I burn them I prefer dvd quality...(I think I will try to download everything I bought once again for better quality...)
-Movies!
From today onwards: films from Walt Disney, Pixar, Touchstone, Miramax. 75 films online now, more every week and month, most titles will be 9.99. Near DVD quality. Same encoding as TV shows at 640x480. If you have a 5mb/s broadband connection, it will take approximately 30 minutes to download a movie. Dolby surround audio in videos
(Hehe we have 15mBps here...)
U.S. now, International in 2007. (Yeah sure.. I know where to download my stuff today.)
That's 8 euro for a movie. Still a lot.
Video Palace offers similar prices, and one can rent a dvd there for quite a while.
Nooooo!
-New iPods.. Brighter video screens? That's it??? C'mon. They must be joking...
Yeeeeesssssss!
-You can take content to computer or iPod, but now... TV
1/2 size of Mac Mini, built-in power supply, USB, Ethernet, 802.11 "wireless component video", optical audio and HDMI ports, plus old RCA stereo audio ports. Works with Apple Remote.
I know what to save for :)
Nope no mobile. Dream on...

Hang that bike
Designer Andrew Lang has come out with an innovative new bicycle storage device, called the Cycloc, which allows you to hang and lock your bike to a wall. Not only does it free up your hallway space (who wants to try to trip through a bunch of bikes in the middle of the night), but its also extremely secure and stylish to boot.

T-post
The world's first international news magazine on cotton, T-post is a subscription t-shirt service based in Sweden. Silkscreened onto American Apparel tees, subscribers get a new "issue" every six weeks with a design about a current news item on the outside and a short article on the topic printed inside. Many of the stories covered by T-post are outside the radar of the traditional news media like conversations overheard on the subway or microchips implanted in butterflies but that is precisely why the editors at T-Post think they're important. Available worldwide, each edition costs €26 including shipping and back issues are not for sale "you can't go trying to buy one like 'you was with it way back when."

Design Brussels
The second edition of designbrussels takes place in Hall 7 of Brussels Expo from 18 till 26 November and runs parallel with two other fairs, Cocoon and Smart Living.
For some time now, Cocoon has specialized in more conventional home style, from traditional to modern. Smart Living is a brand new fair, focusing on the latest technological gadgets for homes, from household appliances and home automation systems to swimming pools.
Together with designbrussels, these events now form the home and interior fair, an event unequalled in the Benelux, both in terms of numbers of visitors and size, and offer and completeness.

Design Brussels
I went to Design Brussels yesterday.
A combined fair with Cocoon and Classic.
It could have been something, except for what Cocoon defines as Modern.
Really.
The entrance was not worth the hassle.
But I did take pictures of the highlights (And probably not by accident they were all taken on Design Brussels):

I want... this beautiful LIGHT READING BOOK LAMP
Sam Johnson's
Light Reading is a low-energy compact fluorescent lamp ingeniously disguised as a book. It is meant to nestle in between other books on your bookshelf and remain invisible until illuminated: when turned off it blends right in with your other books, but switched on, it emits a bright white light which reveals its title. Made from a material called Secret sign (by Perspex), the low-energy fluorescent fixture ensures that you won't use much energy and the book lamp won't ever overheat (and damage your other books). We love the way Light Reading puts a clever new spin on the concept of reading lamp.

The perfect home system
I am busy with it for a a while: the perfect home system set up.
I do believe we are busy integrating computers in the living room (saw a lot of those hybrid systems in hotel rooms around, with a keyboard next to the tv, enabling you to surf on the huge flatscreen)
I don't watch tv very often. Actually I watch it mainly to see series. And when I want to see them. So video on demand is a great invention...
So I tried to figure out the best set up:
My living room would contain wireless internet. There would be no cable available, but DTT is flying in the air, and I hate an ugly TV in a living room since it 'fills' the space and 'cries for attention'. In most living rooms I go into, the space is centered around the big box.
'Me don't like at all.'
I do like a nicely designed audio system. WIth very good sound if possible. And I do like the effect of Dolby Surround.
And a tv that is hidden, or doesn't feel like taking up the space. Or by preference, a projector.
Building such an living room used to be very expensive, but these days, prices dropped a lot.
As I see it, I would put a MacMini in my living room, connected to or a computer full HD screen, or a HD flatscreen, or a by preference this projector, using HDMI (computercable, flatscreenconnections). For audio there would be an optical connection with my surround system that allows me crystal clear sound. My iPod would be connected using a dock, towards the surround system.
For sure there would be wireless internet, and a keyboard.
My mac would have EyeTV for seeing DTT (that is Een and Canvas)
The Airport Expresses allow me to stream the audio from my different macs wirelessly toward the audio system while using shared music in iTunes to enable all available audio.
Plugin some extra Airport Expresses around the house would save me an expensive B&O system that I cannot (yet) afford :P
Streaming video wirelessly is still hard, but I would not need it because the files would be stored on the extra harddrive, connected to the MacMini using firewire, the fastest connection available.
The upcoming iTV from Mac might solve a lot of these riddles, but as one sees, my current setup is carefully chosen and can be extended. The MacMini is in the first place a home computer and upon arrival of the iTV, will become a home computer again.
As I am checking what I still need:
-The Cinema System
-The projector/TV (though I can manage with the 23 inch screen for the moment)
-The iPod Dock and some cables.
And someone who is willing to come and sit on the couch to enjoy the movie (and has to bring popcorn)
Mmmm, running to the nearest audio shop nearby...

If I found the right Hifi already?
.. someone asked.
I think I actually did last week.
I looked at Bose and was amazed by the sound. But there are no digital connections like DVI yet, and the system starts at 1600 euro. And it is soooo ugly. I think I want to buy that set in 5 years or so (and only if there design gets better, or goes back 5 years in time when it looked so much more beautiful)
I looked at 2.1 systems, and was no convinced. So I wanted 5.1.
The Samsung XT100 got an EISA Award, and it maintains the most important connections I was longing for:
an optical-in (for audio connection with my Mac Mini. -Eat that mister Fnac who was convinced that he was right when saying that combo plugs weren't possible-), a 2 kinch for my iPod, and a HDMI for my connection with or my MacMini or my future flatscreen/projector.
Those should do for the moment.
The set has no DVD recorder, but my mac mini IS a HD recorder, and has a TV card, so why bother.
It has a DVDplayer, thus a CD player, it can be connected to my computer, thus iTunes and internet. It has FM, and can play DIVX.
It has no traditional connections (like scart and s-video) but who needs them?
There is a USB connection, that enables connecting your camera/mp3player or HD to the system to show images/video/music.
Apparently one can by the rear speakers wireless, so that is a real saver for cables in the house.
The only thing I need to hear is the sound... :)
Update:
I heard the sound and was a little disappointed.
But the guy in the store had an alternative, featuring the same connections (actually 2 times USB, optical in and HDMI)
but a different sound: Harman Kardon.
Anyone knows that these speakers are in general pretty good.
And the design...
The design is better according to me. :)

Zwei: Bags For Mobile People
Zwei is one bag, with many possibilities. The German bag designer created a unique system allowing the user to swap from a shoulder/messenger bag style to a shopping-bag tore handle, and then back to a shoulder strap thanks to a magnetic buckle, which also can be disconnected and re-used as a waist strap where necessary (running, etc). You can also add what they call a Klick Fix system to secure any of the three bag designs to the front of a bicycle.
Exactly what I am looking for... No retail in Belgium though...

B&O
I bought myself a B&O yesterday, and connected it to my iTunes.
I have to admit: I am hearing stuff I never heard before. As if I have a total new music collection...
The set, a 1900-2 is my sister's age. And it is as stunning today as 27 years ago...
It was designed by Jacob Jensen and is part of the permanent MOMA design collection, since the beginning of the eighties.
I totally freak out on the special push buttons... :)
For the tech freaks: The tuner is connected to 2 second hand Bose 201 (version IV) speakers I found on the web.
When buying B&O, be aware you'll need special speaker connections, you can order online at Conrad.be (738328 - 89) and the tape-output is 5-pin din, going into mini-jack to connect to my airport/itunes. (It even allows me to stream my music wireless to the speakers, which is actually pretty cool.)
Here in Ghent, the B&O shop helped me out really nicely, and fast. And I now have the new collection magazine allowing me to drool on, while thinking 'I'll buy this when I am a real grown-up' (or rather: when I can afford a 15.000 euro set up...)
(Btw, the set up above was a lot cheaper ;) )
Ha! I did a bargain :) I didn't pay 180 euro...

Why I like some stuff better than other.
Last night I was wondering why I like some stuff better than other.
Why did I get touched by that 20 years old B&O more than a recent hifi set? Why do I prefer Apple above PC? Why am I stunned by the iPhone?
It is more than only the design. It is even more than the usability. Or the combination of those.
And then I figured it out: 'I totally freak out on the special push buttons... ' I wrote yesterday.
Both Apple and B&O oblige us to touch their peripherals in a soft and tender way.
You gently put your finger on the touch sensitive button.
You gently move over the mouse pad.
They make us touch a cold and material utensil the way we touch someone we love. Tenderly.
They turn an 'it' into a 'she'.
I truly believe that's their strength.
I totally lost it when I saw how the iPhone obliges you to activate it:
by gently touching it from one side to the other. Slowly... And then taking the finger back.
Compare it to what you want, but actually I think it is pretty sexy...
The whole UI continues in the same manner: scrolling through your phonebook or your iTunes collection is done by striking the screen.
And in the end, disconnect your finger from the touch screen.
This striking or touching (with gentle and subtile moves) returns in all their products: from the touch pad, to the light buttons of your Apple screen. The way the buttons feel, til the way your mac mini eats your cd's. Slowly. Even the little scroll ball of the mighty mouse has it, because it is so small.
Each B&O has the same story: touch sensitive buttons, sliding windows, soft touches.
I think that's the part other manufacturers can learn something from:
make your device as personal as you can, actually try to turn it into a person. And let your users connect through their senses...

Let there be light
I guess the Swarovzki's inside the light make it so expensive (3.950 $)
The supernova is beautiful though...
"The Murano glass diffusers of Barber Osgerby’s “Supernova” test the ability of even the best glass-blowers; it is very difficult to produce a hand-blown piece of glass in this diameter with uniform color and thickness.
Each module is filled with clear Swarovski crystals to form a refracting layer. With a light source inserted above the layer of crystals, the chandelier produces soft up-light through the glass and refracted down-light through the convex crystal base."
Another one for 'when I am a grown up' or 'when I get rich'...lol

Bourgie
My parents and grand-parents used to say I didn't have the tendency to save money.
I guess they never saw how I really saved up every penny, and doubted each buy for months.
But once it was decided, I would definitely go for it.
Same story this month: since months and months I saw this fabulous Bourgie of Kartell.
I did put it on my longing list for Christmas, but nobody noticed it...
I checked them online, and didn't find them less than 180 euro.
So when during sales, I came across this store, and found myself having a 15% discount + a VAT thing, reducing the price to 120 euro, I was tempted. As in 'really really tempted'.
Yet, thinking of what my parents used to say 'You spender' I doubted once again.
I passed the store like 7 times.
Longing...
I even called my mom, telling the whole thing, and she advised me to buy it. Yet I couldn't. I found it an awful lot for a lamp.
3 days she called, wondering if I already bought it, and if I really wanted it, I could better buy it now instead of next month, when the discount was gone.
'And what about saving, mom'.
'What about it? You want it? Buy it.'
So I bought it.
And I was so happy buying it.
I didn't even mind to drag it around the whole city, looking like a stupid happy kiddo.
And you know what, I really love the fact I longed for it. It made the joy so much better...

Atomium
The atomium was recently renewed and looks fancy.
Funny to see that most of the real design I owe, is also present there.
Anyway, some spacy shots from inside:

"And if I don't meet you no more in this world..."
Although Cerith Wyn Evans concentrates his efforts on work in film and video, it is his art installations that say a lot with very little. Wyn Evans works well with words that reference history, philosophy and literature (among other areas) and uses media such as neon lights to bring these ideas to life. The harsh light brings out the poetry of the words, giving them the chance to truly stand out. The ideas become etched on our minds. Most of Wyn Evans’ pieces are in English, but In Girum Imus Nocte et Consumimur Igni is a Latin palindrome meaning 'We go round and round in the night and we are consumed by fire' and indeed, the artist has created a piece that takes place in the round.

But the example here is quite nice.

Into T-shirts
I didn't go to the sales in January (I only bought some design stuff for the apartment. So immediately the budget was spent)
But I did find myself some cute Tees online.
Threadless rocks. Though I do advise you to mark the 'send as gift' thing, otherwise you'll need to pay taxes on import (like I did :( )
I bought myself 4, but I could find another dozen I really want.
Too bad they don't accept Paypal...
The quality of the Tee is superb and so is the print.
Really worth buying.
So mum, if you want to surprise me with something I like, try one of these (or all of them...)
(Oh in case you didn't notice, pink is the new black!!! ;) )

Bodum
Many of you know I am fond of design.
Some of you know I fall for glasses.
And one way or another it might even be considered OK that glasses are breakable and thus, once in a while I can finally buy new ones.
(Though a a broken glass still breaks my heart a little bit...)
Yesterday at BarBik, we saw these beautiful ones.
And I couldn't find the name of the brand it reminded me of.
This morning it popped up: Bodum.
After a google, and a search inside their site, I turned out right:
The 'Pavina' is beautiful.
Double layered thus perfect to offer heated drinks (you cannot burn your hands, warn the drinker though, since it can heavily burn one's mouth...)

Vitra + Sfeer
Vitrapoint Gent was supposed to open months ago, and their opening is postponed until after summer.
Nevertheless, they sell, and they sold me 2 beautiful Vitra chairs.
I got them home delivered today.
Nico Wallays handed over some entrance cards for Sfeer 07.
Since I only need 2, I have some others to give away.
Want them?
Write in the comments why you are the one deserving them.
You might get lucky. (I give them away in pairs)
Sfeer happens in Flanders Expo on March 17, 18 & 19 and 23, 24, and 25
Update: and the winners are: I liked 'Because I am cute most', but since I was able to grab some extra tickets (Tx Nico!), I am able to give the first 3 applicants 2 tickets each.

Kartell on the web
A while ago I wanted to buy a not too expensive drawer. I found a 39 euro thing in Ikea, but everybody I know has it. So I decided not to buy it (next to that, they didn't have the color I wanted)
So I started surfing the web and found the Kartell Componibili, for a mere 77 euro (compared to 96 in a shop here..)
I found a cool lamp, at 135 euro it is way cheaper than the Random Light of Mooi..
Ambientedirect has amazing prices compared to the off line shops.
So eagerly waiting now...

Seen today and have to remember
I saw these today, and actually I think they're pretty cute.
Unfortunately they didn't have them in my size.
So I checked the website for online ordering and stumbled upon these:
(Remember I selected this pair already months ago. Now they have them in green, and I like it better than the golden one.)
Dunno, but I like this pair too.
Darn hard to choose...

Design: small apartments
It has been a while since I posted something on design and architecture. I guess I put the project a bit aside (Won't be moving in my own apartment until September 2008, so why bother)
But I keep on tracking small apartments (since mine is only 57m2)
Apartment Therapy NY did a contest on the most beautiful smallest apartment.
The results are nice to see

Underground eco house: Snowden House
Design firm Crawford Partnership is out to prove that modern living doesn't require a large footprint, and that sites once used as a repair and lock-up garages make equally excellent sites for a new home. Snowden House and Snowden House II, the two homes in London, show how creative floor plans can accommodate an incredible amount of day lighting and make excellent use of passive cooling while providing ample private outdoor space. Taking Lessons from the first home, Snowden House II goes further to include make the entire house a passive thermal store to help run the wet underfloor zoned heating system, a green roof, and makes full use of the stable temperature that comes naturally when building underground.

My interior... (aka Een man dat is een gerief in huis...*)
©matuvu.
It took me a while coz of technical delay. So I am thanking Peter the neighbor for hanging some stuff in my room. The walls are from pure concrete here it seems, so I really needed a man this time to fix this stuff. :)
You can check some pics on my Flickr in my Interior Set.
Quite a difference from what it used to be I guess...
(*mental note: the man in the house was only to drill the holes and help to hang the shelves and lamp. The bed, the little bureau, the night table and the shelves were all made by me. Made as in: design, measure, draw, saw the wood, scour, glue, ... So there is hope... :P )

New Flickr Group
Since I like Belgian Design so much, I decided to easily make a Flickr Group featuring Belgian design.
The idea is pretty simple: pictures of Belgian Design are dropped to this group.
I decided to do it invite only or the moment, but I guess I'll soon open it up.
(Just a bit afraid it becomes a group with lousy pics in it, and we don't want that...)
I believe it is fun to see new designers pop up in this group, allowing us to discover new stuff. I restricted it to Belgian design, since, wll, that's a niche I'd say :)
If you want an invite eagerly, just yawp.
Feel free to post your opinion below.

The Peckham house: a sustainable house
This is the story of some urban wasteland rescued by innovation and will power. It wasn't easy and we proved them wrong. Don't be scared, do it too, but take the tips, save some pain and use us as an example.
"...It's full of, it's built of, exciting original ideas. This could have been, you know, one big failed experiment but thanks to the genius of Dr Monty it's not only an engineering success, it's a beautiful house..."

I went to the opening of the new offices of These Days.
And was surprised of part of the design, which is quite funky.
I wouldn't mind working in such an environment (compared to the Belgacom, Dexia and so fort offices in tis world)

The tables are ready
Ha!
Finally after months and months and a bunch of promises, the tables are ready.
The initial plan was dad would make them but due to certain circumstances and loads of work, I had to make them myself.
I designed them, and together with dad cut the wood.
And then the difficult part: assembling them.
Now in general assembling is easy (certainly with ikea furniture), but due to my stubbornness I don't want visible screws, nor simple corners.
Which turns assembling in a stressful and careful event.
But I am certainly proud to say I did it.
And OK, there are minor details I (and probably c.) notice, but all in all I am pretty proud about myself.
It is really awful to say that all the work took only 3 days, and I delayed it with 6 months, afraid I wouldn't be capable of doing it myself (and now, because I had to do it, I noticed that I ain't such a bad carpenter after all :) )
So, if I hurry up, paint them, we're almost ready for that poker night :)))
Pictures you ask??
Here they are.
(There are 2 tables, the computer table has a built in structure to hide cables. The diner table doesn't.)
