Project: creating the KASK.be site

I decided to start writing about my newest project here.
I am setting up a site for the Academy in Ghent, and for that we need to do a whole bunch of stuff.
I mean: gather information, decide on the ground plan of the site, contact all different studies, discuss on the design.

When making a little site for a little company things are pretty convenient, but when working for large projects, things are quite different.

I will try to make reports about it here.

Project KASK.be: how to start a website

Making a website can be very simple or very complicated or anything in between.
But every-time there is this kind of logical system behind it:
you start with building the structure,
you continue with choosing a system,
filling up the content,
and putting a design.
(and when your site is a huge project, there are dozens of extra things you have to take in mind, and that are lingering aside)

Project Kask.be: Choosing a system

The hardest part these days is certainly choosing a worthwhile system.
While these days choosing a blog system is pretty obvious (there are like 3 main competitors, and many will choose for Wordpress, or Movable Type) in CMS things are more complicated.
For many companies that want to use a basic website, and want to maintain it themselves, I would advise working with an adjusted blogsystem.
Why? Because it is so convenient to post and manage your posts.
Or opt for a good company that developed its own system which works. And that can give you back up when you fail to adjust it.

Digital Management

Prodpage Tour Flashimage

For the school I am working, we need a digital manager for all our files.

I am checking out things now: anyone has experience with Portfolio Extensis?
Pros and cons are welcomed!
(Oh we are talking: many many files)

Tx.

CMS found

Solutions Ee Top
While working on a project some years ago, I implemented ExpressionEngine because of its fabulous user-management.

But the usability sucked. I mean, really sucked.

While looking into the perfect blog/CMS system for our school, we checked it again. (I must admit: Harold tested it again, after my comparison post)
And now we both love it: it is the tool he has always been looking for, and by now, the user interface rocks.
Anyone who uses WordPress will recognize it, but it is so much more powerful.

Expressionengine rocks these days.
Now only add an AJAX-visualisation to the entry and I can switch.
(Will start testing soon...)

The future of the web?

As technologically mediated experiences the Internet, games, cinema, television occupy ever more of our time and energy, it becomes increasingly vital that we create alternative spaces and environments for experience within these borderless territories of information and communication. Virtual World of Art invokes, manipulates and transforms the vocabulary and logic of game culture to create artistic engaging spaces which awaken aesthetic, emotional, social and intellectual responses radically different from those engendered by contemporary mass media. The project explores a variety of significant problems that cultural institutions committed to artistic practice within a networked electronic environment continue to face: how to create esthetically compelling and emotional online experiences, how to link physical and data spaces together, and how to effectively enable human communication and exchange in a physical space where local and remote visitors and performers can communicate virtually through technologies and computer interfaces.

Virtual World of Art investigates the artistic possibilities of immersive game technology and proposes new models for experiencing architectural and public spaces, sociability, and cultural production. Grounded in reality but not limited to realism, Virtual World of Art forms a dynamic, socially relevant, independent alternative to the existing art world, enabling artist to emancipate and develop a critical view of the future and meaning of contemporary art.

Virtual World of Art is the title for a series of new media art projects which subvert and reconfigure multi player game technology to create a network of artistic virtual environments. Each of these virtual environments called nodes, containing digital artworks and virtual art installations, is associated both conceptually and thematically with a specific site, arts centre or a public event where the project is presented on a long-term basis. These virtual environments are connected together by the internet forming a new kind of enlarged social and experiential public space for artistic expression and social exchange. VWA will connect at least 3 locations or nodes in order to function as a complete project. Each node explores a different notion of hybrid between physical and virtual public space. Visitors will be able to interact through terminals installed at the nodes or at any public space in the world that has a high-speed internet connection.

The people of Workspace Unlimited will discuss at the Vooruit with Jan De Pauw (philosopher), Jerry Galle (Lector at KASK) and Anouk De Clercq.

It is a coop between Hogent, KASK, Conservatorium. (yehyeh, my school)
May 23, at 8PM.

(I hope I can convince my school to record this for a podcast.)

Cat and Erik, hope you join me :)

Sneak Preview

Kaskweek

We have been busy lately (and we still are, apparently June is gonna be as hectic as May...)
The redo of the Kask.be and Kaskweek.be site is on the hands of Harold, the practical side is on both of us. KaskLab we're called...
Here's a sneak preview of the site, which should launch soon.

In 2 weeks, exhibitions start. The academy is buzzing, and so do we.

KASKweek released

Ok I am low on posting. Thought May was hectic, didn't consider June...
(From the moment I announced I was going fully independent, things became rather busy, I have to say.)

But first things first: June was reserved for school.

Finally we're there: KASKweek is being released.

Kaskweek-Tm

Check it out: KASKweek.be

And although the site wasn't released until today, we already had some reactions to it: pMachine wants to feature it (Yep we use ExpressionEngine as the CMS behind the system)
This is a nice knock on the shoulder of our splendid webdesigner Harold, and he deserves it.
So congrats, Harold! :)

Hope to see you all on the opening of the exhibitions!

Meanwhile @KU Leuven

In between the hectic days and the sunny weekends, I still go to school.

Where before things were pretty technical and the class was filled with guys, today we are talking about web copy-writing.

Guess what: only girls today...

Tomorrow at KASK

Kasklezingen1

Inge Henneman: “Het motto van mijn praktijk als 'beroepskijker' zou dit citaat van Philippe Dubois kunnen zijn: "As for photographs, don't believe everything you see ! Know how to see what is shown (and what hides itself).
Know how to see beyond, through and beside them. Look for the negative in the positive and the latent image at the heart of the negative. Move from the consciousness of the picture to the unconscious of the thought. Retraceonce again the endless path of the psycho-photographic apparatus, from the eye to memory, from traces to the unrepresentable. Cut through layers and strata like an archeologist. A photograph is only a surface, lacking in depth, but burdened with fantastic weight."

SCAD teams with West Elm

1-17-scad1.jpg

News to us. Perusing various sites yesterday for new spring merchandise, we stumbled across framed photographic prints at West Elm. All of the prints are limited reproductions of artwork by Savannah College of Art and Design students. Through a partnership, the school and West Elm offer a series of affordable and original artwork by emerging artists. It's great to see a big-box store support student artists...

Wonderful idea to copy for photography students over here...

Group94

Logo G94
Way back when I just graduated as a photographer and I started extra courses webdesign, I applied for an internship at Pascal Leroy, way back before he got famous.

He never answered me...
He formed a company and named it Group94.
By now Group94 is famously known around the world.
Pascal is teaching at the KASK these days, and giving a lecture next week.
Feel free to join in.
