Blogging

Have been surfing around lately, to check possibilities of Photoblog.be.
Found interesting stuff.
Stuff that makes me want to change my blog totally.
Will be busy with it, but first finish adding all the older posts into this new one... Another 5 days to go for that... Grin.

Photoblog is a blast!

admin_logo.gif

Some people didn't see me lately. True.
Have been working on the comp for a while. To realize this blog as it is, and to thinktank Photoblog.

After 2 weeks of beta-launch we have already 75 people, most of them are Belgians, but we seems to have an certain attraction in Singapore...
Israel is peeking to, and one to mention: my friend Yasser.

As a Palestinian he is busy with his organisation Karama.
They have a lack of money, so whatever you think of might help.

They started a blog. Today (so if you surf don't expect the big thing already, that will follow for sure)

Enjoy.

Photoblog day today

Well it was yesterday too...
And will be some more days.
But it is FUN!

Today I got the article of FOTO, this magazine will publish the story of Photoblog.be, and it means for us: more bloggers.

They send me the pics they need, and amazingly they want one of my pics on Israel, big size.
Next to this they want some pics of friends/bloggers to show.
I guess these friends will be flattered.
I hope they start updating their blog, so the new visitors can enjoy more of their work. Because I tell you: they ARE good.

This is why Photoblog is furfilling, just like artichoc.be: because we are not selling lies, we are building a qualitive community that is worth watching.

And others have to know. ;)

Check it!

Photoblog: portfolio

In my humble opinion we should add a portfolio feature to Photoblog.
Payable of course (we can't go on being Santa Claus here...)
It is something I remarked in most photoblogsites: they have a blog but next to it a portfolio.(Something I remerk for myself as wel: I want a seperate portfolio to be able to send to musea, galleries and magazines.)
So why not offer a simple solution, where both sites are managed on the same simple way photoblog.be does?
I mean I managed to set up a photoblogsystem for Moable Type now, and still it is very unconveniant to work with.
In Photoblog we already added an extra feature (only for members) which allows multiple uploads, highres pictures and password protected cathegories to protect those highres.
So we have everything.
What else does a photographer needs next to an easy an conveniant system AND a wonderful community?
My answer is a gallery.
And having a gallery in the same database (meaning only ONE upload instead of 10 different) is an advantage in time and design.
I hope my partners think the same... :)

Photobloggers reading this thread: what are you missing now? Please feedback.

Photoblog: booming

Well it is a fact... Photoblog is booming. We have currently more than 2500 users. And this after only 6 months. We have more than 6000 unique visitors a day.

After been busy with it on temporary basis the last months, I guess we all came to the conclusion it was or full speed, or no speed at all.
Our choice will make our bloggers happy I hope...

You don't have a photoblog yet? Hurry up to www.photoblog.be
And the first one that still compares us to Fotolog.net: for sure you didn't try both. Because you'd know.

PhotoBlog gathering @ Sonar Barcelona at June 18 & 19...

PhotoBlog grew in a matter of weeks into a community of more than 2.500 highly creative souls. Many of you have been requesting us to set up a PhotoBlog European gathering. The last weeks we have been scouting various opportunities for a huge European gathering this summer. The people of Lomo, who are organizing a huge Lomo event at Sonar in Barcelona inspired us: we will organize our gathering on the same venue.

Photoblog: what would Barthes say on photoblogs?

The meaning of a photograph can be easily altered, especially by changing captions or adding other text.
Photographs are relatively undefined in meaning, and thus we can not underestimate the value of the captions.
The meaning of a photograph heavily depends on its presentation, and situation.
Roland Barthes defined this as ‘channel of transmission’:
“As for the channel of transmission, this is the newspaper itself, or more precisely, a complex of concurrent messages with the photograph as the center and surrounds constituted by the text, the caption, the lay-out and, in a more abstract but in no less informative way, by the very name of the paper (this name represents a knowledge that can heavily orientate the reading of the message strictly speaking: a photograph can change its meaning as it passes from the very conservative L’Aurore to the communist L’Humanite”

What would Barthes say on the new form of presenting: in the web.
Which meaning is added because presented in photoblogs?

In my -humble- opinion photoblogs are adding a new way of presentation.
The caption available and yet not necessary to fill in.
And the comments to ask for more explanation if needed.

Should we contact Susan Sonntag to have another view? :)

Helpdesk PhotoBlog

Sometimes being HelpDesk is hard.
Why do people not tend to explain what they really need.
'My blog doesn't work anymore, can you help'
Yalla guys, a little bit more might help.
When YOU consider mailing a helpdesk, think of
-FIRST checking the faqs.
-'title' in subject -to disconnect it from spam.
-a detailed report of the problem
-giving the errormessages you receive
-maybe forward that last one
-FILL IN your login and reference -how else do people know what they have to look for.
-And if you reply, don't presume we still know what it is about. Leave the conversation before in your mail.
If everybody would do this, my work would be easier...

If you are reading this and don't have a photoblog yet...

you're probably one of the last not to have... ;)

On an average weekday, we're seeing over 15,000 new weblogs created per day. That means that a new weblog is created somewhere in the world every 5.8 seconds.
Of course, not all weblogs that are created are actively updated. Even though abandonment rates are high - our analyses show that about 45% of the weblogs we track have not had a post in over 3 months we are still tracking a significant population of people who are posting each day. The number of conversations are increasing. We're seeing over 275,000 individual posts every day. That means that on average, more than 3 blogs are updated every second.

So when do you open your PhotoBlog?

Google buys Picasa

Google has acquired a company called Picasa that makes software for organizing and managing digital photos and that runs a peer-to-peer network for sharing digital photos, Google announced on Tuesday.
The proof that imagemanagement is a high-on-priority-list item in computerland.

I think the way PhotoBlog handles image management is amazing. It is so easy to change pictures from one cathegory into another.
It is something that TypePad doesn't got yet.
Sometimes people want to reorganize their stuff.
And they don't want it to take hours...

Now the implementation with off-line sources (because you want your pics organized on your desktop as well...)
And a perfect easy to maintain portfolio...

We are getting there.

Beta-testing RSS Feed.

After the fabulous invention of the 'Image Thumbnailer' to implement your last entries in another blog, we didn't stop...
(Today it will be launched on the site, with 'How to' and everything)

Yesterday already, Frank decided to go full gear, and probably after I -and John- had been nagging too much about the importance of an RSS-feed, he simply made it... (He never told me if the script of Flump I sent him, actually helped)
So within days, this feature will be added as well (now we have to find a way to make a little xml-button on each PhotoBlog-page)

I implemented already on my site under the links. (www.photoblog.net/ine) but a little button will be nicer.

Our developments don't stop for the moment, since the blogging-rage is running fast.
We keep short on the ball.

Needs of a photographer on the web.

What I'll want soon after some of my albums go up is a way to flag certain images to send to an online ordering system so people can buy prints. I'm sure I won't be the only one with this wish, and I'm hoping there will be user-contributed scripts to enable shopping cart capability or maybe TypePad itself will offer this in a Super-Pro version. I'd be shocked if there hasn't been some thinking in the TypePad team of approaching Kodak or Snapfish to integrate print ordering and fulfillment with TypePad photo albums. Checking around the web, I see that the photofinishing industry's standards and infrastructure partners have only recently been announced.

These are the voices to listen to.
Albums, sell prints/licences to pictures/printservice.
Keywords to follow up...

I consider jumping trains from Paris -dropping 2 beautiful girls on a plane- to Perpignan.
Somebody wants to join?
Visa Pour L'Image, from Aug. 28 to Sept. 12 in Perpignan, France

-Apple's presence might be an interesting lecture next to dozens of good photography...-

Fyi, in Perpignan, you can present your work to other newsagencies, magazines and others, in order to get yourself published. Superb idea. During the week, other lectures are given on drm, photojournalism, etc.
All located in the hot South of France.
Get you portfolio ready and jump in the car/on the train.

Extract out of paper

I believe that in the future these -blogging- newssources will gain more importance, the journalist will not longer be an unknown person, but turns into a person.
This personalisation is important, because it will be the main hold on to the truth.
Whereas we get lost in a web of information, not knowing what is true and what not, or what the sources are, this hold on to a person, from which you seem to know something, will become your reference.

As I am writing this, the first bloggers are allowed to offically be part of the election-convention hold in USA. Many journalists are surprised, but slowly the blogging world with its implications is becoming another standard in the internet and media world.
What is today a still no more than a strange word, will be common knowledge in short time.
A database of information is being written on personal blogs and as much pictures are being posted on as many blogs.
Some of them truthfully, others totally fiction.
Knowledge on subjects is no longer based upon what the news tells, but also on what google can give you on the subject, very often referring to blogs.
Other linkages, made into the blogging or found through searchengines gives us more info on the matter, widening our view.

Recent numbers and researches tell us that people look on the web for news.
This knowledge might change the perception of news and images totally.

Picture what matters

Yahoo's "Picture what matters" contest has you upload pictures about socially conscious issues.

Does the environment matter to you? Show us a picture of your local parks or landfills.
Do your friends matter to you? Take a picture of your best friends.
Do video games matter most to you? Why not show off your collection?

It's often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Yahoo!'s Picture What Matters contest is putting that phrase to the test by giving people across the country a chance to share photos of what matters to them with the world.

The winner gets to donate $10G's to the charity of their choice.

Editor's note (rael): I know I'm late in posting this. The competition runs only until August 11th, so get your entries in now!

RSS feeds of keyword-tagged photos

Flickr "tags" are user-created keywords that describe their photos. If two or more users hit on (or agree upon) the same tags, all photos with a common tag are grouped together. That's pretty cool -- a kind of Wiki-style serindipitous metadata thing. What's cooler is that every tag automatically gets an RSS feed, so that you can watch all the photos tagged with "cuba" or "outdoor" or "red" in your RSS reader, getting alerts every time a new one comes along. Here's the 100 most popular tags in Flickr -- click each for a link to its RSS feeds (bigger words in the list represent more-popular tags).

Link
Update: Joshua notes, "the tagging system in flickr was inherited from del.icio.us"

Tagging in pictures WILL become important.

Revenues.

PhotoBlog is booming,, big time booming.
By now, we are considering how we can something back from those 'non paying' bloggers.
Bannering used to be the thing done, but these days first of all it doesn't give big money anymore, neither very appealing on a site.
For that reason we are fully integration Google Ads soon.
Paying members will of course doesn't get such a burden.

Another thing to consider is the affiliate programs of Amazon an the newly established iTines Program.
Showing one's favorite music/books. It is something we were considering already, but now more easy to integrate.
Checking it out.

IM and Skype featured on PhotoBlog

Many PhotoBloggers get in touch with new soulmates on PhotoBlog; pictures speak louder than words. The stories of PhotoBloggers taking a plane to meet their 'inspiring other half' are numerous.
For all those PhotoBloggers meeting new inspiring people, we decided to launch a new feature: integrated Instant Messaging and Skype.
From now on you will see icons featured on many PhotoBlogs, allowing you to see if your friends are online and talk (Skype) or Chat (Instant Messaging) with them through a single click.

This new service is available for all new Member and XL Members. A donation of 5€/US$ (upgrade Membership) and 19€/US$ (upgrade to XL Membersip) for a period of six months (less than 1€/US$ or 4€/US$ per month), helps us pay the bandwidth and keep PhotoBlog growing. Upgrading is an easy 3-step process when logged in.

Plazes on PhotoBlog: the world is yours

Maarten did it... again. With the help of Felix and Stefan of Plazes.
Stowe Boyd, President of Corante, calls Plazes: "the first social software technology that I believe that I will actually use...".
Plazes is seamlessly integrated via XML/RPC into PhotoBlog (Member and XL Member accounts only). You can simply check if and where I'm only by going with your mouse over the Plazes icon.
Neat.
Mark the map, currently no users in Brazil (oh yes, one in Sao Paulo), Chile or Central America (wait, I see Alf in San Jose) or Portugal. Check again in two weeks...

Stefan, co-founder of Plazes might be over in Belgium on November 5th. I'll confirm by the end of this week.

the Israeli model?

Marc has this entry that describes the return of the "Israeli" model in start-up development:

"For years, the israeli start-ups have perfected the model of local (Hertzlia based...) R&D with US based headquarter. The model is now applied more and more to European (here a French example) start-ups. Meiosys whose software is designed to make a virtual version of a computer application and keep it running while it is transferred to another server just relocated from France To California and announced a new D round of funding of $7.5M."

If I'm allowed to make a prediction here - I think there is a good chance this will become a European model too. The 90s have shown it is very difficult to succeed n technology or internet markets if you sell primarily in your how countries. Most (or all) European nation states are equipped with a small (comparatively) home market, an overall less innovative buyer demographics (mobile phones are very different) and difficult access to venture capital. Northern European companies and Israeli companies had realized this in the end of the 80s mostly and followed a "two-roots" model. now some great companies from Europe will come along the same lines.

Pretty interesting analysis. Worth considering for PhotoBlog. ;)

Audio-blogging

The word is out anyway, I can as well start writing on it.
PhotoBlog Audio will be released soon.

We have been thinking long of further enhancing the narrative power of PhotoBlog. e decided to offer people the ability to add voice to the picture; like the guide on your walkman you rented in a museum: enhanced context.

People can upload any MP3, and add ID3 in their PhotoBlog admin. The mp3 is automatically enclosed in the RSS stream, allowing people to launch their own podcast through PhotoBlog, using Dopplerradio as a client.

The official bèta starts Thursday for all XL members. Be quick, we might close upgrades for a while, since people are queuing to test. We'd love to have you in on the bèta test and read your input/comments.

Bandwidth and BANDWIDTH

PhotoBlog currently pays 140 €/Mbps, totaling to 2.100 € per month for the current 15Mbps, not including servers and colocation. Yesterday I met a good friend of mine who is managing one of Paris most popular online radio stations. They offer 256k outgoing streams. We talked a lot on our joint business models. I felt ultimetaley frustrated when he revealed his infrastructure costs. Tomorrow I'm taking the Thallys to Paris and visit the datacenter. This is not a telco with on-net advantages. The prices I'm mentioning are standard list prices: 10 Mbps comes at 150 € a month and 25 Mbps at 350 € a month.

A bi-Xeon 2x2,8 Ghz server with daily tape backup, 24/7 support line (real rolling support teams), dual 70 Go RAID discs, 4 gig RAM and 50Mbps bandwidth (SLA and burstable) comes at 1190 € per month, all in.

They host major European online gaming and radio platforms and currently have 2Gbps fiber in Paris 11 and 4Gpbs in Paris 19, totaling to 6Gbps on their Global switch.

Last week Michael informed me on the prices he is paying for the last.fmcolocation at Silt; the bandwidth prices are more or less comparable to the above mentioned prices. And people who are tuned into last.fm know that the uptime is beyond 99,9%

While talking to many people yesterday it struck me few have a clue on the costing model of bandwidth. Cindy has bene writing a lot on theproblems of broadband pricing in Belgium, but the serverside pricing model is even less transparant.

As I said, when adding up the numbers of the last 12 months I feel frustrated. Where is the Test Aankoop for bandwidth pricing? More next week.

PhotoBlog XL Member

XL Members tended to ask what was the difference between XL and member.
Well space in the first place...

But the good news is that we have added some extra stuff:
-Last.FM Radio is being introduced, making you able to let people hear your personal taste.
In coop with Last FM.
-And Creative Commons Copyright Notice.
So you can let all your visitors know that your images are tagged.

Hope you enjoy.
And for the others: time to upgrade we would say...

PhotoBlog is slowly changing into MediaBlog, since soon the 'podcastings' will be introduced in which you can broadcast your personal information.

And yes we are working on the rest...

PodCasting

PodCasting for PhotoBlog is a fact.
It is sublime. I have to say.
When John and I were talking about it, it wasn't very clear to me what was the best way to implement it.
Surely Maarten did it in the most convincing way.
PodCasting is preserved for XL-Members only because of the high bandwidth and serverspace.
While he was busy, Maarten also refreshed our RSS feed, resulting in a much more convincing feed.
From now on, you'll see personal names appear, and when integrated in iPodder, the MP3 files download themselves to your harddisk.

Not necessary to say what an invention PodCasting is.
Since it supports MP3 and MP4, surely in the future videoblogging can be a fact.

I can think of some interesting implementations for schools etc.

PodCasting, check the test on my PhotoBlog

NetNewsWire

NetNewsWire took an important decision.
It left its tool to post to a blog out of is update and instead offers a link that opens your preferred program.

Why is it clever? Because from now on, they don't have to spend any time in upgrading this tool, and they can focus on other implements -like integrating podcasting-
Back to basics, it is called. And using the tools of others.

It is something that we at PhotoBlog also prefer.
Why start to integrate another chatting tool, when the best one are already out there?
Why not work together with people that know things the best.

The oly thing which is a necessity is to integrate it in the best possible way.
So your users don't end up into something they don't understand.
And to give a proper manual.

Writing one right now for PodCasting through PhotoBlog, withing days on our helpdesk . ;)

PhotoBlog is getting big

PhotoBlog started out as a little project, ambitious in ideas, but small in resources.
One year later the basic idea of photoblogging became a huge community.
The platform has extended with audio and communication features.

We need to compare ourselves to other platforms and make an evaluation.

Truly I believe in our format. It fits perfect.
Minuses are easy to find: multiple upload, open API, and more extensive tags and info.
But I think PhotoBlog is becoming adult now...
Printing and video implementation together with that API should make a serious client...

And than a next thing.
And a next, and another... ;)

PhotoBlog bought by Pixagogo

Congrats Pixagogo! Enjoy the app.

If you want to know the past of PhotoBlog, I advice you to read the article in Menzo.
PhotoBlog grew into something big, and I all hope you enjoyed the app. so far. I remember our enthusiasm to make it running and the excitement of seeing our user database growing into a huge amount of photo freaks.

Me myself, I felt the need to leave the team because of personal projects and the fact that it became too time consuming.
Leaving it, felt like letting down.
But there was no other choice.

Heck, Pixagogo will do a good thing with it. I am sure.
And Ana is still there to be your light in the dark ;)
Enjoy.

Your PhotoBlog Mapped

Googlemap

I am still figuring out what'/s so good about Flickr...

It must be the community, because to me, their admin panel sucks.
Each time I open PhotoBlog, I am so delighted about Maarten's baby and the way it was designed: clear and simple.
We almost never got questions on the interface. And we know why.

Some weeks ago, PhotoBlog was acquired by Pixagogo and it is good news to see the guys working on it.
They implemented Google Maps and the results are there: the PhotoBlog Member Map. Just for the fun of it.

Out of a good source I know they are hard working on other features.
So be aware :)

Kodak and Skype bring VOIP on a next level

Today Skype and Kodak anounced the launch of a joint partnership. Kodak launches the first Skype certified online photo sharing, experience, helping people talk live to friends, family and colleagues around the world while viewing a shared photo album. Now that's a great idea. To be honest, i didn't quite get the real added value of VOIP, beyond tha free aspect of it. I always read that the real added value will be on a next level, namely VOIP integrated within applications.

That's why the Skype/eBay deal should make sense: teaming up with your friends in a real time bidding proces, could make it a very entertaining and rewarding experience. And it's on this same level on which the Skype/Kodak deal makes sence: voice + storytelling while showing pictures is a relevant service.

Excuse me?? This is what PhotoBlog did already more than 2 years ago.
I remember talking to Skype about an integration, and I remember urging Maarten to do so.
We were the first, in a first adaptor strategy... And we can assure you: people DO talk about their pictures, and it seems about a lot more.
We have marvelous stories about photobloggers around the globe visiting each other.

PhotoBlog: 3 years.

3 years ago, begin October 2003, PhotoBlog.be launched. 30 users, friends and family, we had back then.

3 years later it is still nice to see what happened with PhotoBlog, when seeing on several blogs links to people's pictures.
Not to speak about the series of friends I made during those 3 years.

I still believe PhotoBlog was launched in a country way when blogging was a word not in libraries yet, and with features that are only today popular to the mass (We implemented Skype in September 2004, and podcasting in December 2004.)

Happy 3rd birthday, and keep on shooting!

Nice link to add: Genthology was formed by a bunch of Gentish PhotoBloggers,

(Disclaimer: I was one of the co-founders of PhotoBlog, PhotoBlog was sold to Pixagogo and later to Telenet.)
