How-To: Podcasting (aka How to get Podcasts and also make your own)

how to podcast

This week’s How-To is a three part special complete with our
first Engadget “Podcast” MP3. The first
part is how to get “Podcasts” on your iPod. So what’s a Podcast? To put it simply, a Podcast is an audio file, a MP3,
most likely, in talk show format, along with a way to subscribe to the show and have it automatically delivered to your
iPod when you plug in to iTunes. The show isn’t live, so you can listen to it whenever you want.

Futurephone-To-Podcast:

On videopodding:

Warren Ellis says:

If you've got a podcast grabber like iPodder, aim it at this link. And you should grab a .3gp video, shot with the Nokia 7610 cameraphone, that I shot in North Beach, San Francisco a couple of weeks ago while waiting for Laurenn McCubbin to pick me up in her little chariot. .3gp is viewable in a current version of Quicktime -- older versions will probably call out for the .3gp plugin. Obviously, this isn't going to be much use if you have the iPodder-iTunes-iPod direct filling set up. But it illustrates how easily you can shoot video, dump it into a file and broadcast it.

PodGuide through your city

Index 02

Today I found a launch of a great -again Belgian- initiative.
PodGuides. A kind of city guide you can download on your iPod -or other mp3-device-
Could work greatly together with Doppler I guess.
PodGuides is seeking guides, and wants you to be part of it.
Make an interactive city guide, record it on your ipod and post it. Many will be grateful.

I am already dreaming of a very mysterious walk in Ghent. Be prepared...
So Anitas, Moko and others: you'll prepare your city guide for me?

Podcasting and the future

I have read Smetty's Weblog on PodCasting. In the end of the article, she mentions the problem of the future: bandwidth.
Bandwidth will be the issue on every internet activity in the near future.
I believe torrents could mean something in the future for podcasts and video, since they are p2p and thus don't use as much bandwidth.
But torrents are not user friendly at this very moment.

Looking for a solution in the near future I had this idea. It should be technical possible:
Use a free gmail account as HD and provide the RSS feed (You can view Gmail messages in your aggregator by subscribing to a new channel. Enter https://gmail.google.com/gmail/feed/atom in the ‘URL’ field, then submit your Gmail address and password.

Please keep in mind that Gmail messages won’t appear in your aggregator unless there are unread messages in your inbox, so you might post podcasts to an that certain Gmail but NOT check that account.)

Somebody checks it out? -Didn't find a mactool to use Gmail as HD-

Remark: The problem might be that the podcasts are not included in the RSS feed that Gmail offers. For that problem, I refer to the MailFeed solution
Other problem is the need for a good aggregator: by testing the rss-feed of Gmail, NetNewsWire didn't do the job...

(*Update: after upgrading NetNewsWire to the latest beta, it did do the job. The podcast was not included as expected, so one should go and work with MailFeed indeed...)

Podcasting on typepad?

Just testing something for a sec: if I upload an mp3 through Ecto into my typepad, do RSS readers fetch it as a podcast...
Or not?

To people wondering where this music came from: It is from compil blogotheque, part of pointdecoute, a series of free downloads on the web, I wrote about longtime ago.
On the legal part:

Nous voulons seulement montrer qu’il y a d’autres voies, qu’il est aujourd’hui possible de découvrir de nouvelles musiques en toute légalité, sur Internet. Et que le web est devenu, grâce aux webzines, aux blogs, aux communautés, le meilleur moyen de ressusciter un mode de relation à la musique, de propagation de la musique qui a tendance à disparaître : la transmission, l’inspiration, le conseil d’ami...

Update: seems the mp3 doesn't appear in NetnewsWire.
A player does appear in the browser...

Update2: it does work with the FeedBurner SmartCast and I managed to disable the autoplay, which I hate...

How long before video podcasts appear?

For a project, I am checking video-upload.
TypePad in combination with Ecto works fine, for both video and audio.
Integration of the podcast tags just happened one post ago.
Now I am actually checking whether these apps also allow 'video podcast'
I checked with Smetty of Doppler and she confirmed my thoughts: Doppler already supports all of this. Now it is just a matter of time before people will start to use it I guess.

iTunes 4.9 ahead of schedule, podcast gets popular

Apple is trying to leverage the growing Podcasting phenomenon with the next version of its iTunes software -mac + pc-.
There will be hard times coming to developers of podcasting software.
Their goal will certainly be: get more specialized, and make themselves preferred above the iTunes software, which will be, given its popularity, a hard task.
Apple is planning to reorganize the whole concept of Podcasting in order to get it more structured.

Smetty: keep up the good work!

Podcasting Itunes

Well, I did a quick review.
It sucks.
Not so many Belgian podcasts, and a computervoice on BBC??

But honestly: a revelation: Het PaleisPodCasts.
Pretty funny.
Should exist more like this, technical pretty good.

So I have to admit: iTunes might open PodCasting to the world.

Screencast screencast screencast

Yep I am sure.
I mentioned it in a talk with Peter yesterday, but the big buzz will be screencasting.

I referred to it as videocasting. -He smiled. 'Screencasting it is'-
I already implemented it in the new version of SnowBlog some months ago, and I see amazing possibilities: teachers can upload little lessons, and children can exchange messages over little video's.

But the big problem is the standard, Peter replied.
And the necessity of good software.
I am not sure about that...
.mov  and.swf seem to do well. -Apple has some very nice features in their paying quicktime version btw.-
And good software to tape? Try ScreenRecord. 20 dollar only.
Tape, export and you have a perfect .mov. ready to upload.
Intro's can be made in iMovie, but are no necessity whatsoever. Video is visual and thus works perfectly without..
Use iChat in combination with a webcam to show yourself online if you want.

I am certainly not the only one with this opinion, it seems.

Update: good software + explanation can be found here (scroll down)

PodCasts

Podcastingbe3

I met Eug irl last week, and as said before, he has some interesting remarks on blogging sites in general.

He got me really interested in podcasting -I kind of think it has a lot of potential, but I hate the fact that there is so much junk inbetween, a preview before one downloads would be nice.-
Yet, I discovered his website: Podcasting.be and was stunned about good quality podcast links. Check it out.
And our Flemish national radio is busy with it too, launching a series of programs in podcast as beta. Easy to use... Much easier than their online listener that still is bullshit for Mac...

Apple posts video podcast tutorial

Apple posts video podcast tutorial:

ipodquicktimeMuch like the podcast tutorial we saw a couple of months ago, Apple has posted a "Creating Video Podcasts on Mac OS X" tutorial to its website. They suggest you use an iSight camera (of course) and Quicktime Pro 7.0.3 to create your video. Once you've finished recording, select the new "Movie to iPod (320x240)" option from the "Export" menu to ensure iPod compatibility.

The tutorial results in an .m4v file containing H.264 video and AAC audio. The webpage goes on to explain that the iPod can play the following file formats specifically:

  • H.264 video - File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio
  • MPEG-4 video - File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio

Told you: videocasting is going to rock now...

iPod for Podcasting?

Does the iPod finally support CD-quality audio recording?

Indeed it does. In the past, the iPod’s operating system limited audio recording to 8KHz, 16-bit mono via an external device such as Griffin’s iTalk. According to Apple’s published specifications, the new iPod supports two audio recording modes: a “low-quality” mono mode at 22.05KHz, and a CD-quality 44.1 KHz stereo mode.

What’s as yet unclear is if you can simply attach a microphone to the iPod and begin voice recording or if you’ll need a yet-to-be-released third-party audio-input accessory.

PodCasting beyond junk

Studiopodcast590
Podcasting has certainly passed its first diseases and is growing into a healthy kid.

Studio Brussel released Studio Podcast: one hour of the best music.

I wonder what this means for the artists included in the podcast.
Is it podcast free music?
In the Netherlands they are working on a podcast licence. (tx Eug)
but in Belgium things seem more complex.
Is StuBru breaking the law or not?

This article (in Dutch) is interesting to see what is possible in Belgium and what not.
But seeing the recent developments, I guess Marcel is biting dust.

(Belgian users: fill in this interesting questionnaire)

Well, according to their feed, 'in our crazy world we all need some silence... Download collections of digitally clear silence encoded in high quality AAC.'

I downloaded one of their podcasts, and their first vodcast, and I must say the silence is stunning.

SABAM

So why are they nagging about podcasting???
(And I guess the 15,54 percent is a mistake, how come they make more profit and the artist get less money?)

PodCastingTools

As announced before we are podcasting these days.
I don't really like my voice so some other people are doing the talking in the mic - I keep on talking off-line ;) -

I dare to say that I am pretty proud of the result so far. -We had a false start in the beginning, but now things are quite fun, and I can promise more and better is to come, so keep an 'ear' on it-

I just wanted to write down some of our experiences so far:
Before starting podcasting, we checked some references on how to do and what to buy. -Thanks Eug and many others on this matter-
We rented some material and were stunned about good and bad quality.
And on this matter some things have to be said...

A good set up is essential and frankly speaking this set up might seem good, the sound sucks.
We ended up buying a 300 $ mic and work with a MiniDisc recorder. The results are OK -not perfect, we would need a mixette for that ;)-
Yet, the professional voice is recorded in a professional studio.
These perfect conditions make a qualitative podcast.
I know some amongst you opt for less when buying simple recorders in the media market, but to me those podcasts fail.
The noise in the recording bothers me, and distracts.
When testing them, a very annoying zooming keeps on appearing.
I checked the iRiver and the internal mic fails due to the noise of the hard disc. You need to buy a mic to take distance of HD, and it needs to be an expensive one -I tried a 75$ Sony one, which is quite OK, but there is still an annoying noise-
I checked the Edirol R1 -which is already quite professional, but again the internal mic fails-
I checked a MiniDisc with Sony microphone and again the noise was there.
I checked a simple Olympus device, and the sound quality was 8kHz instead of the wanted 44kHz.
Worst of all was my beautiful iPod, which has the same 8kHz problem. Very annoying.
-The iPod video should solve that problem with 44kHz and wav recording, but no recording devices are yet known. I truly hope they make a simple adaptor so any mini-jack enabled mic can be used... That one together with our beautiful expensive mic should make a perfect match...-

But more important is the subject.
When looking into the podcast directory and listening to a bunch of podcasts, only few appeal. Most of the podcasts are boring, too long and too unprofessional in my humble opinion.
So we tried to switch around, make short podcasts -only 3 minutes- and use a professional voice and something funny to make the podcast something you want to listen to.
I hope it works and you like what we do.
I hope it inspires you to make your own inspiring podcast :)

A short note on music and intro's
We made a deal for our intro with the amazingly good Smoothouse, so we can use our tune unlimited.
I am just telling you you should be careful when using music material and tunes.
Check the podsafe music network for safe music and know that the RIAA and in Belgium SABAM are still arguing about what is allowed and what not. You might want to follow it up before you get a bill in your mail...

Podcasting

''The fundamental mistake that media companies, large and small, make is that they adopt the model but not the philosophy,'' Jacob said. ''They look at things as the adjunct to the core product that they're providing, and not as a fundamental shift in the way that they are creating media itself.... What listeners tell us is that mainstream programming converted to MP3 files and redistributed and called a podcast is interesting to a point, but it's not what they are really compelled by. What they are compelled by is unique independent niche programming that appeals to them and allows them to develop a relationship that they can't forge with mainstream programming.''

Think short. Think focused. Think compelling. And rethink everything about the structure and balance of your conversation with your audience.

I got quite some critics on my first remarks. but I said pretty much the same.

VodCasting Tools

Moviepod-Splash

I firmly believe that there are 2 major personal video players on the market: PSP and iPodVideo.

Thus offering your vodcasts in that format wouldn't be bad.

I did some research for Software for Apple that does the deal:
NullRiver released MoviePod and has a special podcast compression. Nice (nice lay out too).

Forty-TwoDVD-VXPlus converts DVD's to iPodVideo. Very nice for moviemakers that want to show part of their work to an audience through podcasting.
Video2Pod, Podner, MoviesForMyPod do the same as MoviePod and you'll have to check out which one is better.
It has a lot to do with the original files: is there codec supported or not?

PodCaster from Kudlian should be perfect to put those things online
And I am sure PodCastMaker from Potion Factory will do something similar soon.

(Peter, will you sum up the PC-tools?)

Good compression settings for iPod videos

I've been tinkering with compression settings on videos, trying to find the best balance of size, quality, compression settings and compatibility for my video-capable iPod ever since the beginning of November. H.264 is very nice and cool, but it takes forever and a day to compress using QuickTime Pro's export to iPod option. Since I'm not really interested in projecting my videos in large on the wall via an HD-capable projector, there's no need to pick it over MPEG-4. Also, I want to make sure that my videos, especially ones like the video podcasts we do, are viewable by as many people as possible.

Scoop: Samsung Launches "AnyFilms.net" ! - Next Generation Film & Web Entertainment

Netanal Jacobsson just sent me this information!

"Samsung mobile will be launching a new cool web initiative called "AnyFilms.net" www.anyfilms.net on Saturday, Dec. 24. However, an agency I work with tells me that the site will be up and running already today. The aim of the the initiative is apparently to challenge the way 'film' is both produced and consumed. I have had a look at it and it is quite amazing. Anyfilms.net features "Ubiquitous Films",...

Some really cool short films produced by young Hollywood filmmakers that can be downloaded on some Samsung mobiles, and "Interactive Films" an amazing interactive experience, through which the user can manipulate films to change the stories and solve puzzles - there is actually supposed to be 11,000 different ways to view the content.. Pretty cool, isn't it?

The films have been assembled by Jon Kilik, known for such productions as Broken Flowers (Jim Jarmusch, director, Bill Murray, lead role) and Alexander (Oliver Stone, director, Anthony Hopkins, lead role). He has brought along Hollywood filmmakers Mark Dippe & Alex Merklin (Adrian Grenier is starring in his film) to create these films.

It seems like Samsung really believes that movies on cell phones is going to
become very big in the near future."

More information can be found on the
weblog of Netanal.

As every citizen can report a podcast to the VCM, of which he suspects it might not have been registered,- Verstrepen urges on his weblog today to file complaints against all podcasts of politicians and government institutions to flood the VCM.

Belkin representatives hinted that they are close to unveiling a microphone attachment for 5G iPods that take advatage of that iPod’s higher recording resolution. The adapter will include both a built-in microphone and a microphone port for connecting an external mic.

Finally!!!

I guess I'll wait a little longer and buy that iPod Video for professional reasons ;)

Flying abroad next week

Just got back from Brussels, picked up a brand new Apple 17 inch, a 15 inch and 4 iPod Videos.
Playtime!
I mean, we'll be flying 8 hours to Washington. Have to fill those machines with some awesome content.
Guess the ministers will be seeing some good vodcasts. And listen to some nice podcasts.
Peter, I'll use this list for sure.

If anyone has any tips: always welcome to send in.

Finally: Record 16-bit digital audio with your iPod

Record 16-bit digital audio with your iPod:

Here's a great podcasting tool. The MicroMemo by XtremeMac is a mic that plugs into your iPod's dock connector port and produces 22 KHz/16-bit, high quality recordings. The mic is on a flexible neck for easy positioning, and there's a built in speaker for instant playback (no need to put on the headphones). The MicroMemo is powered by the iPod (we're not sure how much of a strain that's going to put on the iPod's battery) and the mic can be detached. Plus it just looks cool.

XtremeMac is currently taking pre-orders at $79.95US.

iTunes U, Coming Soon

itunesu.jpg
Listen up, you studious students. iTunes will be releasing a new service to help further your studying, and by studying, I mean skipping class and not worrying about it. iTunes U will be teaming up with universities and other education establishments to offer a free hosting service for educators. With this service instructors can upload videotaped or audio recorded lectures to iTunes and students can download them to their iPods or watch it at their computers. Hooray for not going to class and making it up later!

The workshops

The workshops are finished, and I guess some of you are going home with a headache, receiving too much information at once.
The audience was very diverse: some were really acquainted with the new media, while others never heard of iTunes.
I guess I couldn't make every one happy.
One ends up with a lot of new buzz words that sound unfamiliar.

But I am sure though that some of the things will make sense, later on, as you will see them appear more and more.

And maybe when reading the slides (these are slides with more info than on the presentation) you might 'get' some more things.
Enjoy.

New Sony MiniDisc to support Macs

Sony has unveiled its new MiniDisc MZ-RH1, which the company calls a mobile recording studio. The unit will record audio with several different modes, depending on location, and can play inearPCM, ATRAC (ATRAC, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus) or MP3 format. In addition, the MZ-RH1 will be Mac-compatible, which Sony says brings "greater choice in digital audio devices to Mac users." The Mac software is expected to be available this summer.

So if that mic for the Apple iPod doesn't get released soon, we'll have MiniDisc supporting MP3 finally. And their quality is more than average..

iLounge gets details on the iTalkPro

OK, now I want a new iPod next generation definitely...

It's is the one accessory I've been waiting for: A voice recorder for the fifth generation iPod. iLounge was lucky enough to get some exclusive details and photos of the iTalkPro, the upcoming iPod audio recorder from Griffin Technology. It sounds terrific.

According to iLounge, the iTalkPro can manage three and a half hours of CD-quality, stereo recording on a fully charged 60GB 5G iPod. An on-screen gain control will let you do a little fine-tuning via the iPod itself.

No pricing or shipping information has been announced, but I want one already. Check out the full article here.

Video podcasting: technical side

I am doing some research on video podcasting and the technical conversion. (standards etc)
I wrote some information on the PodHive Wiki, but if any of you has interesting side notes, please, feel free to add.

I'll add one more question: anyone of you has a PSP and a Mac: how do you do your conversion to make video's available for your PSP?

Cool podcasts

After installing all cool stuff on my new computer, I started scrolling for some neat podcasts in iTunes (conveniant for downloading them on my iPod..)
Here's what I found.
Apparently a lot of museums took the opportunity to offer museum walks:
The MOMA podcasts
The Met
Tate

I wonder when the SMAK gets that idea...

Why video podcasting will have a bright future

Yesterday while driving back and forth to Microsoft, we were talking about podcasting and its future. How it will stay 'niche' as it is now.

Me on my side, I am not so sure if it will stay 'niche'.

It is true, I am still not really convinced about watching movies on an ipod (but maybe I should get one before saying so)
Yet podcasting doesn't need an ipod or any other player.

You have enough with your computer.

Some days ago I was impressed: my downloaded podcasts on iTunes also appeared on my FrontRow MediaCenter.
And there they were: full screen on a 23 inch screen. Videopodcasts...

Now tell me: if you can watch a cast on a tiny little screen or on a blast of a television, what would you prefer as user experience?
I have my idea made up.
I also see some possible implementations.

Peter: what about videopodcasts teaching how to dance tango?
Or cooking classes? Or a tour in the Moma?
Pretty sure, they'll offer paying podcasts one day.

Is the Frontrow experience far away?
Don't think so.
Yesterday Microsoft presented us their new Vista.
Their MediaCenter, connected to a nice huge flatscreen...
Works too I guess.
(I forgot to ask how they implement the music, and podcasts, and what they do when users prefer iTunes: does the media also appears in MediaCenter? Kris? Tom?
I'll have to check it out: they gave us some DVD's with the beta products. -Have to figure out how to install it on my Intel Mac though-)

Podcast: questions

Do you prefer long or short podcasts?

What is the average time you spend listening to a podcast?

What bothers you?

What do you like?

What is according to you the perfect length of a podcast?
And of a vodcast?
